There’s a New Asiatown Destination for Freshly-Made Udon Noodles - Eater Houston

"Step up to the counter at the new Napa Udon House and order dishes like beef curry udon or chicken broth udon, all topped with fresh noodles made in house daily. The fast-casual restaurant just opened at 9889 Bellaire Blvd. Ste 229, inside the Dun Huang Plaza. That’s on the second floor, located in the former home of Stage Lounge & Live Music. Side orders here include chicken yakitori, a soft yolk egg or extra udon noodles (of course). Yelpers are also talking about the veggie tempura and karaage here too. There’s even a salad udon with seasoned deep fried tofu and roasted sesame dressing. In honor of the soft opening, the noodle spot is currently doing a special buy-one-get-one-deal." - Adele Chapin

This was our first time there, kids wanted to play at the claw mania store. They do have alot of shops and restaurants. I would like to go back and spend more time there to try out some of the food.

Dun Huang Plaza is a very popular and high traffic shopping center thanks to the awesome shops within. Every time we are here, it takes a bit of a drive to find a parking spot. However, we have yet to give up! There are so many food spots here that you can come for all 3 meals and also late night bonus rounds. Like others, I sure wished that they had more parking spots!

Google
A fantastic place. Easy to spend the whole day here. Fun and games, great food, & you can take a break for a massage. You can just park inside and walk from shop to shop. Everyone we interacted with was very nice.

Google
This review is regarding the plaza management itself, not the other individual businesses. All these years I still have not seen any improvement except one picnic table at the lawn area. Multiples elevators don’t work and they don’t have sign direction of where elevators are. Second, I know they got money, invest in a nice playground on that lawn bc it’s such a wasted space. Will come back and increase the stars when they improve their establishment.

Google
A very popular area in Chinatown for good reason. Plenty of restaurants, shops, claw machine games, drink shops, and more. It would be easy to spend an entire afternoon out here. Highly recommend!

The area has grown tremendously over the past few years, transforming into a vibrant hub filled with endless possibilities and experiences. With a plethora of shops, restaurants, and professional services to choose from, there is truly something for everyone. Whether you're a food enthusiast, a shopping aficionado, or someone seeking professional services, you will find something to suit your needs and tastes. The local shops offer a wide variety of unique and intriguing products, perfect for those looking to indulge in some retail therapy or find that special gift. Each shop has its own distinct character, providing visitors with a diverse shopping experience that cannot be found in larger chain stores. From quaint boutiques offering handmade crafts to larger retail outlets with the latest trends, every corner of this area holds a new discovery. The dining scene is equally impressive, with restaurants ranging from casual eateries to upscale dining establishments. Whether you crave international cuisine or classic comfort food, the dining options here are sure to satisfy your palate. Many of the restaurants prioritize using fresh, local ingredients, ensuring that each dish is both delicious and sustainable. Given the abundance of attractions and activities available, it's best to allocate the entire weekend to explore this rapidly expanding area. Dive into the culture, taste the flavors, and take advantage of the professional services that cater to every need. There is no shortage of things to see and do, making it the perfect destination for a weekend getaway.

Google
I've visited this shopping center several times now. Im not from Houston, and its one of my must stop places almost every time I visit. Full of Asian stores with a great variety of products and services. Can find just about any type of Asian food here, many times there are are multiple choices for the same type of cuisine. Shopping center is clean and modern.

Google
The plaza is truly overwhelming, but in a good way. Especially at night. Amazing restaurants from ramen and hotpot, to dim sum and Korean BBQ. Would like to explore more and even hit up a bar or one of the gaming shops. Just be careful and drive slowly. Pedestrians everywhere, especially at night, when this area truly comes alive.

Yelp
We are lucky to have Dun Huang Plaza 敦煌廣場 in Houston Chinatown. It sets the center stage for all activities from sunrise to late night (like 2 am). It has over 2 dozen of dessert restaurants, over 3 dozen of dine-in restaurants, and several dozens of other businesses. You can stay here all weekend long to do your shopping, eating and much more. No wonder Houstonians called this as The Chinatown. I have been here over thousands of times to explore opportunities to promote Chinatown. (no I don't check in as it is not my thing on Yelp) Check out the Dun Huang Plaza photos I added at https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dun-huang-plaza-houston?userid=jwPVqdHpVHCBfAe4pZBbgA

Yelp
Parking suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. Glad they kinda opened the parking structure/ garage with many floors. This is the heart of Chinatown in Houston. There are so many options for food and boba. Obviously there is a huge market in the middle of it all and even karaoke. Prepare yourself for lines at the popular restaurants!

Yelp
Epicenter of Chinatown off of BW8. Lots of food and drink options here. While parking is available on surface lots and in the garage, people cannot drive in this area. That's the main complaint, it's pretty dangerous driving in this area with all the teens and awful drivers. Upside is the food options for a weekend date.

I've noticed that you Dun Huang out with me anymore. If you did, you'd make a lot of trips to Dun Huang, because that's where I hang out! I have spent so much time in this Plaza that I think I actually live here. On the night that Hurricane Harvey hit H-town I was actually in this Plaza. So to say it's my home away from home would be an understatement. The reason is that a lot of my favorite places are here, especially for dessert and bubble tea. But also for food. Such as Hunan Bistro - perhaps my fave spot in Houston - where I get the Cumin Lamb (orgasmic), Tofu w/Seafood, and Spicy Diced Chicken. Hunan might be the best Chinese food I've ever had in my life. There's also Strings Noodle - wonderful. With locations of Sharetea, Gong Cha, and Kung Fu Tea as well as the wonderful gelato shops Frozen Cafe and Gelato Cup, the best ribbon ice anywhere at Nu Cafe, a location of the yummy Six Ping Bakery, and so, so much more, this plaza is second to none. It's also second to nuns, because the convent across the street consider themselves more important than Dun Huang Plaza (cough yeah right cough). That's a little un-convent-ional of them isn't it. I would definitely say this is the place to hang out when in Houston. The only problem - and it is a big problem - is that parking here is almost impossible, because so many great places are packed into such a modest plaza. Packt like sardines in a crushd tin box. It's just so insanely busy and packed especially on weekends, but really every afternoon evening and night of the week. Sometimes it gets to the point where it's an absolute zoo and all human decency goes out the window. Parking can be as bad as Manhattan. But the food is better. Anyway I'm Dun Huanging out with you. I'm heading to Dun Huang. I think we may be Dun as friends.

Yelp
To the naysayers of Houston Chinatown who are may complain there are too many Vietnamese influence: Come to Dun Huang Plaza (. It feels about as sprawled as LA and as fobby as Flushing, Queens and yet it's still under construction. This is undeniably one fo the most Chinese centric areas of the city, all in one convenient stack of a shopping plaza. There is plenty of parking throughout the area and even if it appears that every lot is full, one can go into grocery store parking lot where it just goes up a bunch of levels. The plaza is stocked with all sorts of Asian businesses, mainly restaurants, dessert spots, entertainment, massage spots, KTVs, and a few SE Asian establishments as well. I'm usually here for various reasons. It could be a bubble tea run, it could be to eat or get my foot rubbed, some light souvenir shopping for friends / family, people watching, or to see people park badly. And there is a ton of the latter. Watch out for the weekends, the traffic gets pretty messy.
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
A variety of Asian food, boba, karaokes, and some shopping places in this plaza. I don't have a favorite restaurant in this plaza. Some are a hit and miss while others are mediocre. I'm a fan of the karaoke. KTV is usually the our to-go place. Nu cafe is pretty good for shaved ice. They have a Japanese store, Fit, that sells all kinds of cute stuff. This plaza has a parking garage so you can some shade. It goes all the way up to the rooftop so abundant of parking since on weekends, the plaza does get really crowded, so I just go for the garage.

Yelp
I love this plaza! It has some of my favorite places to eat and shop in the city. When we are stumped for dinner, we often head straight over to Dun Huang, knowing we'll find something to our liking. Some of the stand outs are: *East Wall Chinese - some of the friendliest waitstaff and best food around. *Banana Leaf - It isn't my favorite, but everyone I know loves the place. It's Malaysian cuisine. *Gelato Cup - It's another gelato place that serves interesting flavors. Why is this place special? The nature videos they show are amazing. You could sit in there for hours eating gelato and getting lost in a beautiful ocean scene or something from the Planet Earth series. *fit Japanese Store - it's a Japanese dollar store that carries more nick knacks than you need, but it's a ton of fun to go through! *Dun Huang Market - this grocery store is awesome. We went in looking for one thing and came out with lots of snacks. I don't know what the background of most of it is, but I can confirm that they have Japanese products and snacks. They are super cheap as well. Places I haven't been yet but are on my radar: *Kubo's - I see it every time and I just haven't made it in yet. *Shabu House - One of my favorite meals in Tokyo the last time I was there was Shabu style. I keep meaning to try this place out! Growing up in Houston but being 1/2 Japanese, I never really got in touch with the Asian side of my family. When I first came to this plaza, I was like, oh this place makes me nervous because I don't know the social rules that others do. Some of the people in some of the cafes can be a bit brusque (Fu Fu I'm talking about you). But, if you've never ventured outside your comfort zone, you are missing out.

Yelp
Has it really been that long since I last reviewed this place? So much has changed except for the fact that this place is poppin' more than ever! I still love the various boba/tapioca places that you can find here and all the different restaurants. There is just too much to choose that it gets hard to actually pick a place. The great thing about this plaza is the continuous change throughout the years. Every place is in competition with each other so only the best continues to stay in business. Many places have opened up and closed and another establishment would take its place immediately; so we're always left with new and exciting shops and places to eat or drink. Parking has become a hazard zone though with so many people and not enough spots to park, but you'll always find something new here that's for sure.

Yelp
Interesting that they have a link specifically for this center. If in Houston craving Asian cuisine Chinatown in Southwest Houston is the place to go! But be prepared for crowds. Especially on the weekends. Dun Huang is total immersion in the culture though. Full of almost 20 different unique restaurants, tea and boba and dessert shops you can have a very cool evening of great food and sights and sounds if visiting H-town! Even as a local native for many many moons...comfortable in my suburban existence I still like coming out here occasionally to subject myself to fighting for that perfect parking spot or waiting in line for that perfect restaurant experience! Lol! But honestly it's not that bad... And at night it's kinda cool seeing all the colorful signs all lit up that dot this unique Plaza! It's like going to Rice Village but you feel like you're in Asia! Generally my experience with the customer service had been hit and miss at most of the establishments but if you know a little mandarin or other dialects you can get by! Being raised in a mandarin household my ear is great! But conversationally I'm ok. At least I can get by most times ordering. Now if the menu is in Chinese only it would be tough but most places the menus are in English. Now having a spellchecker live or otherwise would be suggested before publishing. In some cases... ; Being an American born Chinese. Born in our nation's Capitol but transplanted to Texas in my childhood years I know H-town like the back of my hand and have seen Southwest Chinatown develop since the early eighties. It has that nice patina now and Dun Huang is its finest representation! Exemplified by busy busy weekend crowds. Mostly Asian....it is a unique experience for anyone who loves Asian cuisine and culture! Check it out!

Yelp
This shopping center is the Yelp List of great places to eat and shop! I started to notice a trend that whenever I ate dinner with my parents that we would end up at this one outdoor mall. Feeling like dumplings/Japanese Hot Pot/Dim Sum/shopping for the kiddoes-- we'd end up, once again, at the very same shopping center. I have to give my folks and their Chinese friends full credit for introducing me to this address. Located just within the Beltway 8 on Bellaire Boulevard, Dun Huang Plaza is one of the newer malls along the Bellaire Chinatown Corridor. Still under construction over the past year, the shopping center has been steadily filling in with a host of stores from restaurants to insurance to groceries to jewelry to karaoke. It started off with some high caliber anchor restaurants and shops that are some of my favorites: Village Cafe Banana Leaf Shabu House Dun Huang Supermarket Star Ice & Teriyaki and FIT And these are just the ones I've tried. You could make a solid half day of wandering around and eating: Hit one of a dozen restaurants for lunch or dinner. Take a break from food at with some shopping at FIT (Japanese 'Dollar' Store) or the small, but immaculate Dun Huang Supermarket. Then grab something sweet on shaved ice at the Star Ice (there are at least three other stores offering desserts). Most of my favorite places are kind of "L"ed off Bellaire, but there are a lot of new storefronts off the main boulevard. Dun Huang is double deckered with a second floor of shops many of which I have yet to even walk by. It gets busy on the weekends, but there's ample parking in two separate parking garages. My Tip: Check the "Chinatown, Sharpstown" with the 9889 Bellaire address listing on Yelp, and you'll find plenty of 4 star+ reviews for some of your old favorites and some new ones.

Yelp
We love coming here!! It has so many different businesses, and most are open pretty late. They have delicious ramen at Tigers Den, tons of teahouses, tons of late night restaurants, ice cream, markets, karaoke, you name it. Their parking lot is pretty big, but it is somehow always PACKED. Lots of culture and great foods here.
google avatar

Justin A.

Yelp
I love the Dun Huang Plaza. I come here very often whether it's to eat good food, hang out at one of the many bubble tea shops, or to get a $20 foot massage. Sure, the parking situation is a disaster, but you can usually find a parking spot in one of the two parking garages. There are some other cool little stores in this plaza where you can buy gifts, get baked goods, or even shop at a Japanese household products store called "Fit" which is like an Asian-style dollar store. At nighttime, you will also find a few bars, a place to play pool, and even sing karaoke. Pros: -Variety of good Asian restaurants (including Mamak, Banana Leaf, and Tiger Den) -Great bubble tea hangouts (including Tea Bar, Kung Fu Tea, and Star Snow Ice) -Multiple places to get a $20 foot massage (including Eastern Food Spa, Sakura Foot Massage, and Oasis Massage Salon) Cons: -The parking lot is always busy

Yelp
Five stars for a variety of shops and restaurants but one star for the parking and traffic. There simply aren't enough parking spots for the number of stores in this center. The management should look into maintaining their parking spaces. I almost bust my tire where there was a loose parking block in one of the spaces.
google avatar

Albert F.

Yelp
This is a nice shopping strip mall in Chinatown . I feel safe when I frequent the restaurants and stores here . Parking is a little hard to come by during weekends but they do have garage parking which is not too bad. Lots of good authentic Chinese restaurants in this place.
google avatar

Weili W.

Yelp
Dun Huang is still the best Asian shipping center in Houston. However, the plaza is starting to show its age. Considering how well the square is doing, the owners or management should really keep up with the maintenance: Fix the non-working escalator or just remove the whole thing and make it regular stairs. Having an escalator that doesn't move makes your customers feel like this shopping center is neglected and is a huge turn off. Make sure all the lights are working. Even though I have never felt this way, I have heard a few friends, mostly female, who told me they feel it's dangerous to go upstairs in Dun Huang at night because some places are so dark. How much could light bulbs possibly cost when you're raking in tens, if not hundreds of thousands a month in rent. It's especially important to have lights working on the rooftop of the parking structures. It's incredibly dark up there without lights and very dangerous, not just from potential criminals but people could trip and sue. Make sure the elevators work. The shopping center is getting busier and I applaud the designer to have the foresight to build parking structures. However, it's very inconvenient to park on the top floor without a working elevator. It may be fine for me but what about handicapped people, old people who can't walk too much stairs, parents with strollers, people holding multiple bags of heavy grocery... etc. Keep the stairwells clean. I like the fact that there are so many stairwells around because I frequently take my young sons to climb the stairs and explore after we eat. However, sometimes it smells like garbage or worse piss. I sincerely hope Dun Huang keeps up with the maintenance or someone else build a new, hot Asian shopping center that will be good for the first five years.

Yelp
If anyone follows my reviews they know I try to stay away from the bellaire area as much as possible. But sometimes it's a must just because there are only so many ITL substitutes for good Asian food. This plaza has become one of those stops where I am willing to deal with the horrible traffic. This plaza houses some of my favorite foods: including Dim Sum to Desserts.
google avatar

Kenya P.

Yelp
This place is PACKED with businesses just like the rest of Bellaire boulevard. It's my favorite plaza to visit since it contains all the popular, good stores such as FIT, NU Cafe, Tiger Den, Six Ping and more. When recommending my friends on where to go this place is a must for me to suggest. So much food to choose from! Parking is VERY tough on weekends in the regular parking lot and drivers are so impatient and almost cause accidents all the time so be VERY careful. Easy parking is in the bigger garage closest to Bellaire boulevard on the third floor and above. Your car will be safe, don't worry. (Hopefully.)

Yelp
I have not seen an Asian shopping center like this anywhere in the USA. I should not even call it a shopping center because about 90% of the center are leased to cafes, restaurants and massage spas. The center is an Asian food and body relaxation mecca. Just about every type of Asian foods are represented here: Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Chinese of every styles, Taiwanese, and Malaysian. After eating at any of the eateries, you can walk two doors down to the left or right, or walk up-stair, or across the parking lot and get yourself a foot message or body massage or combination of both for about $40 per hour. I need to come back and do this food/massage thing. It will be like a one day vacation in one's home town.
google avatar

K N.

Yelp
This is where you need to be for all things Asian in Houston. Three karaoke spots? Check. Two flavored ice dessert spots stacked upon another dessert spot next to it? Check doubled. Delicious smells from the bakery. Mmm, thinking about it makes me happy. Mongolian, Korean, Chinese, Malay... crawfish... all the types of Asian restaurants you can think of. Oh wait, you want to cook? A very well ventilated market for you to get yo Iron Chef on. No stank smell of fish there! Did I mention the Asian version of the dollar store as well? The Fit will have me spend a small fortune in $2 increments. Yes, I need it all! All that walking may give you some issues. Well, get a foot massage at one of the two massage places. Wait, or even sign up to get your three times a week for an hour on with physical therapy. You can easily confuse the Asian writing and no domestic cars in the expansive parking lot with an actual Asian speaking country. Don't. You're just on Bellaire. But this is a nice close second.
google avatar

Sherwin S.

Yelp
Of all the Asian plazas along Bellaire, this one is my favorite. It has the best food, best shopping, and best market. Ever since this plaza opened, I rarely find myself anywhere else while looking for noodles, dumplings, or groceries. With the addition of the new karaoke bars (which I never go to), I can imagine how busy this place will be in the evenings. There is still a lot of empty retail space...which tells me that this plaza is only going to get better!!!
google avatar

Tom N.

Yelp
With all the awesome choices of food in this one plaza, is it any wonder why it's constantly packed? This place is so full of win! Not every restaurant is great, but it does have such a wonderful variety of things to eat and check out! Peking duck? Check. Roti canai? Check. Shaved ice? Check. Shabu-shabu? Check. Macarons? Check. California roll? Check. Bibimbap? Check. Dim sum? Check. Good luck finding all of that at the Galleria! Only thing sucks about this place, parking. I've seen some Lambos and Maseratis park here before, but I would be scared of door dings.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
OMG, where has this place been all my life? We recently discovered this lovely gem and are so glad we did. Why? HOARDS and hoards of wonderful places to eat and explore. Heck, I'd give the place 4 stars on the delicious smells wafting through the parking lot. Really. Hub and I got out of the truck and he looks at me and says "This smells like Asia. I always wanted to take you there, but this smells almost as good." He's traveled Asia in the Navy and has fond memories of his visits and we are now building fond memories together here at Dun Huang. Ok, enough about our relationship, sorry. If you want to feed yourself until you are as full as a tick on a hound dog, go here. A wide variety of Asian cuisines awaits you. Malaysian, Taiwanese, Chines, Vietnamese, Korean, all here. Need a massage? There are at least 3 places to get one at a very reasonable price. Need groceries for your Asian cookup you're doing? You go to the name sake, Dun Huang grocery and get the goods. Do you need some Chinese medicines? Go here. Photography services? Go here. Optical services? Go here. Dance classes? Go here. Flooring? Go here. Mobile phones or accessories? Yep, you got it. Go here. The variety of things here astounds me. The center is very easily gotten to off Beltway 8, or you can cruise down Bellaire from inside the Loop. I highly recommend you swing by and enjoy an afternoon of tourism in your own town or just visiting some of your favorite spots, if you're an old pro.
google avatar

Raquel C.

Yelp
A large plaza on Bellaire Blvd and Corporate. Lots of Asian restaurants to choose from along with Cafe's, massage parlors/spa, health centers, shopping. Popular hotspot. Large parking lot.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
What can you not find here. It's a one-stop plaza. Appetizer at HK Dim Sum, shop at FIT, dinner at Tiger Den (ramen), dessert at Snow Ice. Then party at one of the multiple karaoke bars.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
While it does have everything like Kim C. said, be very wary of bad drivers and lack of parking. There isn't any shame parking in the parking garages on either side of the center. I would give it five stars if not for the narrow lanes, waste of a green grassy field and lack of landscaping and trees.
google avatar

Keagan D.

Yelp
They're a lot of good hang out places at night. I find this area really nice to go skateboarding around the area during the day, A big area to explore. This area has lots of choices of food, yet if you go there often, you might lose interest.
google avatar

B S.

Yelp
Good selection of Asian food in one area. Be careful of drivers. Its a fight for parking on many nights.
google avatar

Wane H.

Yelp
There is a guy in the parking lot buffing cars so you can have him shine your ride while you eat.
google avatar

Brandon A.

Yelp
This is a large shopping center with a variety of restaurants, an Asian supermarket, and karaoke bars. You can easily spend all day here.

Yelp
The most convenient and presentable meeting place in m neighborhood! All the good food are there! Im soooo happy!
