The Best Donuts in NYC | Eater NY

"Dan Dunbar and Christopher Hollowell (their names are incorporated into the brand) founded this shop in a corner of Williamsburg in 2011, after being inspired by a Simpson’s episode. The doughnuts are all vegan, and you won’t notice that dairy products are missing. Chocolate frosted with sprinkles is a favorite." - Eater Staff

I remember going to this place in 2018 on St Marks Pl. Now that I'm back in NY, I'm glad there's still an option open. It's literally right in front of the L subway exit. There are few places to sit, and since we went on a weekday afternoon, it was empty. They have many flavors of donuts, at least 18, and hot and cold drinks. We ate the donuts there and asked for more to bring. The donuts are very light, the dough is very good. The toppings are very tasty, the best donut I've ever had, exactly as I remember from 7 years ago. And the best part is that everything is vegan.

Went there for a snack with the family. The place has a cozy feel to it with nice decor. Their menu is pretty neat and they have a variety of different flavors. I tried the chocolate And the peach and they were good. The sizes of the donuts are good too, I left half in the fridge for the next day and they didn't dry out they were still moist. Very cool experience. I will come back when I have the chance to try their other flavors. My nephew was excited and loved his donut.

Google
No notes. Fantastic vibes inside with animal friendly signs and decor up. The donuts are pillowy and soft with the perfect texture. Would fool a non vegan they are incredible.

Google
Perfect experience. I got donuts, coffee, and a latte and all were excellent. The staff was super friendly and helpful, and the donuts made it worth the long-ish wait. Some of the recent one-star reviews are obviously bogus (and hilarious) and I felt like I had to rate this place. It deserves 5 stars all day

Google
Don't sleep on Vegan donuts!! These things are addicting! #1 fav is the cinnamon sugar, then their maple and glazed. They also make specialty donuts, tried their cereal one very yummy.

Janella V

Google
Love this place! We’re practically here every weekend! Love all the specialty donuts they have. So creative. I think it’s one of the best donuts in New York!

Sophia K

Google
These vegan donuts are insanely delicious! My S/O and I go out of our way to drive all the way here from NJ just for the donuts! They’re honestly better than any non-vegan donuts I’ve had in the past! And I love the fact that there are seasonal flavors it’s always a delight to come back and see what different flavors are in season! Most notable ones are the Strawberry cheesecake (pictured) (SO GOOD I HAVE NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE IT!) and the pistachio!

Google
mmmmm donuts 🤤 We visited last year and visit Everytime we come to Brooklyn. One of my absolute favorite places in all of NYC. Some of the most delectable donuts ever - and all incredibly vegan! Our favorites are the strawberry frosted, plain glazed and blueberry - just wish we didn't have to be masked to enter and there's no inside dining, kind of throws off the vibe, BUT, that won't deter us from visiting when we're next in town!

Yelp
Such a cute donut store in the neighborhood! Dunwell is known for their vegan sweets- always having such eclectic and fun flavors. While being vegan, they're also very careful with the nut products which I appreciate (because I'm allergic!) apparently they focus on a soy base- according to one of the employees. My favorite flavor so far is probably the rose thyme or pumpkin spice. It seems they rotate flavors so it's always great to check out the new inventory. Haven't tried their coffee yet but that looks good too.

Yelp
Love this spot. Best donuts in Brooklyn! Got the classic chocolate glaze which was exceptional and the banana hazelnut which wasn't as good as the other but still delicious. They do not have decaf coffee which is a bummer and they also do not have seating indoors. Still a fantastic spot and I will most definitely be back.

Yelp
Went about 10:30 am on Sunday, and there was a line almost out the door... about 10 customers ahead of me. There is some stool seating in the store and a few benches outside. All the selection is vegan. The donuts are great, and unless someone told you they were vegan, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference. It's worth a revisit to try the other flavors.

Yelp
I've heard NOTHING, but good things about this place...and once I'd learned that it's fully vegan with a purposeful mission towards non-animal ingredients, I HAD TO MAKE A VISIT! I ordered the pistachio and apple cheesecake donut to-go and everything was delicious!!!!! For those that live near this establishment, you guys are lucky because if I did, i'll be visiting just about everyday. FYI, they have a rotating menu, so please check out their instagram daily.

Yelp
I had just finished having lunch with a friend in the area and wanted something sweet as always, lol. I checked Yelp to see what was close by and saw this spot was bookmarked to try. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted and felt welcomed. The place smelled amazing, and I knew great things were happening based on the scent alone. The young man in my pics helped me, and he was a sweetheart. He was very patient as I figured out what I wanted to purchase. Based on the great reviews, I was confident that whatever I chose would be good, and it was. They have a variety of donuts, teas, and cofees, just to name a few. I glanced at some of the donuts that weren't available and asked if they had any more in the back, and they didn't. I'll have to return to try those popular ones that run out quickly. I opted for my favorite, chocolate, and the blueberry. I also had a cup of my favorite tea-jasmine. (thank you). Baby, I ate my chocolate donut with tea on the ride home, and it was heaven. That donut was delicious and hit that sweet spot just right. lol. I enjoyed the blueberry one the next day, and it was good, but my favorite was the chocolate . I definitely plan on returning to check out some other cool flavors and look forward to having the outstanding customer service I received on my first visit. .

Yelp
I came here recently on a Sunday afternoon. There was no line, which was great, and there's a few outdoor tables to sit at, but not too much seating. I got the lavender earl grey donut. The donut itself was quite good. Nice and airy, very fresh, and the dough wasn't too sweet itself. The icing was a bit disappointing though. I really didn't taste any lavender or earl grey; it almost just tasted like a standard glazed donut. Definitely would come by to give it another try because the donut itself was good, but the glaze flavoring was a letdown.

Yelp
Tried the lemon doughnut. Had good textures but found the flavor to be kinda flat. Service was great and shop was nice.
google avatar

Yelp
Really amazing donut shop in Brooklyn! I can't even tell that the donuts are vegan. My favorite donuts were the PB and J and the Almondine donuts. I honestly think you can't go wrong. The worker who helped me pick the donuts was very sweet. The inside of the store is mainly a togo spot, but there is a small table on the outside where you can enjoy your donuts. Highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
I have bookmarked this place many years ago & finally ended up here by accident. We were walking from winson's bakery and ended up here. There were so many different types of vegan donuts to choose from. The raspberry jelly one which we wanted to try was sold out. We tried 2 donuts: 1) pistachio and 2) strawberry caramel cardamom one. Pistachio donut - The donut was very soft and cakey texture, but had a weird artificial almond extract aftertaste. Strawberry caramel cardamom donut - I preferred this donut more than the pistachio one. This one had so much different flavors and the taste was nice. Super soft and I could taste the stawberry, cardamom and caramel. Staff was very friendly. Some indoor & outdoor seating.
google avatar

Ashok J.

Yelp
Vegan donuts at its pinnacle. They have some unique flavors like hibiscus like which I loved. There is one cake that rotates each week and sadly there were sold out when I visited. The donuts were so soft and fresh, it would pass as a regular donut. They have good space and couple of benches and standing rows to devour them right there. Loved every bite.

Yelp
A few years ago, one of my close friends who lives in Ukraine (and once lived in New York) said these are his favourite donuts. I finally tried them yesterday and I see why he's enamoured! I ordered the strawberry cardamom almond cookie, a dirty chai, 2 chocolate cake, and 2 lemon cookie. My favourite was the strawberry whatchamacallit. It was simply splendiferous! The combination was so harmonious that I've thought of so many ways to combine those flavours in the future! Chocolate cake is a perfect chocolate donut. Did I taste tonka bean? Lemon cookie was stunnin'. This one was a bit sweet for me, but I love lemon desserts, so this was worth it. Finally, dirty chai was fun to eat. The texture of the donuts were airy and fluffy and all had nice complex flavours. I was impressed and I will certainly return again! When the war passes and my dear friend is able to travel to Brooklyn again, I will endeavour to treat him to a delicious Dun-Well donut...

Yelp
I ordered half a dozen donuts and they look so pretty to eat! This is my first time trying vegan donuts and they were so good. Very fresh and soft to the bite.
google avatar

Ann S.

Yelp
I have never had vegan donuts before but they were quite interesting. I am a big fan of jelly donuts, but the raspberry jelly one was sold out. I tried the pistachio & strawberry caramel cardamom donut. Both were very cakey and soft. I like the strawberry caramel cardamom donut more, and did not like the pistachio one. The pistachio had a weird after taste. Nonetheless, I was very happy to try them!

Dominic P.

Yelp
This Place is vegan on the sly. There's no cows milk for coffee, which left mine tasting odd. I was duped. No seats either. The donut was pretty good tho.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts I've ever had in my life. I didn't even realize they were vegan until after I ate them and looked it up. I'm not a fan of cake donuts so I love that this place mostly does yeast donuts. The French toast was very good and had a strong flavor. The cookie butter cheesecake was my personal favorite. The perfect amount of sweetness, moistness, etc. will 10000% be coming back
google avatar

Shirley H.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place out because of their good reviews and a girls gathering. However, their donuts were way too sweet; to the point I can't enjoy it. There were a lot of flavors to choose from and I didn't enjoy them. The pistachios and almond donuts had a fake almond flavor. The Snickers and Almond Joy sounds so interesting, but such a let down. I thought my favorite would be PB&J, but it was overly sweet. My favorite was probably blueberry out of the box of 12. It was also $39 which isn't cheap. The service was fine, it was pretty quick. The shop is small and dim.
google avatar

Holly C.

Yelp
First time trying vegan donuts and it wasn't bad at all. These donuts are larger in size than your typical donuts. There are a lot of different variety of flavors to choose from. Texture of each donut is light and fresh, each has it's own flavor from glazed to filled PB&J. I would come back to try other flavors.

J W.

Yelp
I have done only delivery or pick-up (one of each) and haven't eaten at the restaurant, but WOW. I am not vegan and don't usually like doughnuts, but these are creative, beautiful, and delicious. Recommend!
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Tons of creative donut flavors to choose from. More of a dough taste than cake! I got the PB Jelly, Pistachio, Blueberry, and Glazed. Glazed is always classic and was my fave.

Yelp
I use to love this donut place ! The donuts are super amazing and I've been coming here since 2017 when my best friend who's vegan introduced me. Unfortunately today I went and it was closed at 5 pm. I completely understood but somebody was looking at me from the door inside so I asked nicely hey what the hours usually? and he ( a white male with a man bun ) and a black woman were laughing at me. So I said to my wife wow that is so rude and disappointing why are they laughing? As i was walking away. the white man opened the door and chased me outside. He started yelling and saying 'what did you say to me ?' and getting alarmingly close to me. So he started yelling I don't see a man here get a man to defend you. Typical white male privilege and violence to two queer brown girls. He was like bring a man I wanna see a man and basically kept following us until I got scared and yelled at this to shut up and get the F away from us. But like I said the donuts are good, not enough to make up for the violence I experienced but to each his own! Here are some cute pics of all the times I ate donuts here RIP to my favorite place PS I FORGOT I was with my nine year old niece and she was really scared ... poor kid just wanted a donut and she encountered a white males glass fragile masculinity !!
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I had no idea this was a vegan donut shop till I saw the stamp on the box! I DEVOURED it and my husband who is lactose intolerant also got to enjoy some! We got the maple french toast, cinnamon sugar, pistachio, boston cream, lemon poppy and toasted coconut. My favorite was the boston cream and lemon poppy. Not too sweet, great texture, fresh and a nice tang on the lemon flavored one. The rest were also very good. Excited to come back and try more flavors! highly recommend!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
The blueberry and pistachio were my favorite. Definitely can't eat too much cause of the sweetness. But will hit the spot if you got have a sweet tooth.

Yelp
This is an updated review. Honestly I wasn't sure if I had done a review before but you'll see I did and the sentiments are exactly the same! So here's to 2023 dunwell love! If you haven't had dunwell have you truly lived? I don't host a party without Dun-well doughnuts! That is a party of one (just me) or a large group lol these treats are always fresh and the flavors are magical! Some of the most unexpected flavor combos that have you swooning and wishing you grabbed an extra! To be honest I had no clue the donuts were vegan. I had visited about 3 times and it wasn't until my 4th when I asked for creamer in my coffee I learned. I have had some pretty flavorless and unimaginative vegan donuts before so that's why this impressed me so much. The team is so special! They are friendly and patient especially when you get a case of the ummmms looking at all the flavor options. It's hard to decide. Dun-well not only makes incredible donuts and delicious drinks (all vegan btw) but they were my comfort during the pandemic. With so many businesses closed in the area they were my Cheers! where I could go for a delicious mid day snack or morning coffee, great conversation and a warm smile. After a while they came to know my name. They may never know how much that meant to me. There is always a line of delight for dunwell tons of people come to visit and so if you're in the neighborhood or planning a trip please stop by. If you're wondering which flavors are best you can't go wrong with glazey boy or classic strawberry sprinkle which inspires the mural inside. I love the pb&j and I say that as NOT a traditional pb&j fan! Check their IG for daily and seasonal/festive flavors. Love this place so much! I'm confident you will too!
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Went here with two vegan friends to grab a quick snack before breakfast. I got the cinnamon sugar and powdered raspberry donuts and they were DELICIOUS. The only thing about the powdered raspberry donut is that it was super messy because of the white powdered but other than that it was great. Also, there is no indoor seating and some outdoor sitting.
google avatar

Rachael M.

Yelp
The snack attack donut was fantastic - chocolate, pretzels, potato chips, and peanut butter cream. They have lots of other flavors. I love an all vegan shop and can't wait to come back!

Katy M.

Yelp
i've literally never written a yelp review before but i am so grateful for the beautiful box of donuts (LIME HIBISCUS? IT'S SO GOOD TO BE ALIVE) and delicious iced cortado (which i, like an asshole, special requested) that arrived at my home this morning. these guys rock, all love, y'all are 500 candles in the wind
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing!! I felt like a kid in a candy store! I tried the maple, almond & pistachio donuts. The coffee is really good too!
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
One bite. That's all you need, just one bite and you'll be hooked. They have so many flavors that rotate around to satisfy any craving, your mouth will drop as you start reading over the selections, and your stomach will definitely lead the way. I tried to save part of my lavender matcha donut for later, completely impossible, inhaled in 30 seconds. We tried both the raspberry rose matcha, and London berry fog drinks and they were delicious, I can't wait to go back for the maple nut latte! It's a small space just off the L train, but they pack so much heart into this store! The decor is cool but homey, and all the staff is incredibly nice. I'm bringing in everyone I possibly can, people need these donuts in their lives!

Polly B.

Yelp
Honestly, so glad don't live closer in the best way. Every time 'm in the area treat myself and now crave it. 've never thought of myself as a donut person but every single one here has been amazing!! love that along with their regular flavors they always have special limited options. have yet to try the classic pistachio because the special ones are always so tempting and can only pick one! The staff is friendly and easygoing, they never mind my constant request for their opinion of the three flavors can't decide between that day haha A clean cozy space, there are lots of little things to look at while you wait as well as an impressively extensive drink menu of options and flavors. have never personally experienced a long wait in the afternoons but can imagine it might be pretty busy in the mornings. highly recommend a visit and a donut or two if you pass by
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Doughnuts from @dunwelldoughnuts . Everything Bagel, Glazed, Sweet Butter Rosemary, Strawberry Shortcake, Maple French Toast and PB&J... - ALL VEGAN!!! . These were some amazing all vegan doughnuts and I'm not at all much of doughnut fan... I mean, I'm not sure if would get them myself if I knew they were all vegan beforehand... like I would try if someone bought it for me... ‍ . They were not overly sweet, so you are able to taste the doughnut. And every flavor they put on the doughnut tasted exactly what they say it is... like how?? I'm . While we only got to try 6, I wish we were able to try some of their other doughnuts as well, but I'm sure we wanted to be safe and not order too much incase it wasn't... but now that we know, we are definitely gonna get some doughnuts for sure.
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Man I went there yesterday 9/25/23 8mins late didn't know they closed at 6 came from LI 31mins alway so you know they're the best my fault for not checking the time they closed I went to the Jayz exhibition at the Brooklyn library it was great. Dude wouldn't open the door 8min Cha lol
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I grabbed a Dun-Well Doughnut - key lime donut - for my husband when I found myself early for dinner in the neighborhood. I had no idea it was vegan at the time nor would we have while eating it. It was fantastic. Fluffy and full of key-lime goodness. I'd definitely try other flavors in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
On the off chance that I venture out to Williamsburg, I make sure I hit up Dun-Well for vegan treats. Very cozy and cute interior with changing daily flavors (check their Instagram!). They have a nice spread of plant milks to go with the teas and coffees they offer. Do note they remain TO-GO only as of March 2023! I've gotten a few flavors of donuts here, from a simple glazed, to maple (my favorite) and a blood orange. I have yet to try the filled ones, or any of the ones with thicker glazes like chocolate, etc. Because I prefer a yeast donut, I'm in love with the fluffy, light and slightly chewy ones Dun-Well turns out. I absolutely devour every donut I've ever gotten from here. Just the fact that I'm willing to trek an hour one way to get my hands on these vegan donuts tells you enough.
google avatar

Chaitra M.

Yelp
Popped in here for a little treat. Super cute spot and the donuts smelled delicious. I got the pink sprinkle and the pb&j! Both were delicious and hit the spot!
google avatar

Maram A.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. The donuts are bread like so they all the same base and what makes them unique are the frosting on top. This place is popular . I prefer cake donuts but if you like brioche or soft bread with sugar frosted flavor you'll love this spot. They do have cake donuts but I believe they were out when I went.
google avatar

Taylor K.

Yelp
So delicious! We got the lemon cookie and it was soft, flavorful and warm. The service was fast and kind. There isn't any seating inside.
google avatar

Francesca M.

Yelp
So many amazing flavors! The Boston Cream was so rich and delicious. Would highly recommend if you're in the area.
google avatar

M V.

Yelp
This is my go to place for vegan donuts for many years! And always my favorite the apple cider cinnamon cake! Go & support this place as more vegan establishments are closing down
google avatar

Gina L.

Yelp
This is a completely vegan doughnut shop. All of their desserts and coffee are plant based. Not only are they plant based, but they are absolutely delicious! Whenever I am in Brooklyn, I cannot help myself from stopping at Dun-Well and champs. I brought a bunch of these doughnuts back for my family and everyone raved about them. All of the flavors are genuinely amazing. Their coffee is also really good as well and the staff is super friendly.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
Literally one of the best vegan donut places I've ever tried. I walked 1 mile for them, and they did not disappoint. Oh so fluffy and just the right amount of tang, each one had such a unique flavor!! I got blueberry, pistachio, cinnamon sugar, and almond flavors. Although each one was incredible and I couldn't help but savor every nibble, I think pistachio stole the show. Something about the flavor is just even more addicting than normal! Wish there was a bit more seating outside since there is none indoors, but overall I am extremely happy with everything!!
google avatar

Marissa L.

Yelp
Dun-Well makes fantastic doughnuts that just happen to be 100% vegan. My biggest "problem" is that I don't live nearby and often don't get there until the afternoon, meaning the selection is more limited and a lot of the great flavors I saw on Instagram that morning are already gone. Even with more limited choices though, every doughnut I've gotten there has been good. My favorites have probably been the pecan sandies, strawberry sprinkle, and maple French toast so far, but there are so many others I want to try. Looking forward to our next visit, hopefully earlier in the day!
google avatar

James Z.

Yelp
Donuts to rock your world! And vegan! Not that you would know. Have taken many friends without them knowing and after gobbling down their first they always go back and buy more! Variety freshness and flavor rule here! Friendly staff to boot!
google avatar

Adrian S.

Yelp
Dun-Well Doughnuts is absolutely amazing. I became vegan almost 4 years ago and had no idea that they were in Brooklyn. After seeing an Instagram post about them, I visited and bought a dozen vegan donuts. The flavors are on point. The texture is great. The vibe is awesome, and the staff are super sweet. The only thing is still, you cannot eat/drink anything in the store. But all good, you can take it to your car and eat the donuts there! I usually get an iced matcha latte with oat and vanilla, along with 12 donuts like strawberry sprinkle, maple french toast, boston cream, raspberry jelly, and then glazed. Totally recommend Dun-Well. I have got my family and friends hooked on them :)
google avatar

Esther O.

Yelp
I have gone here a few times already because donuts are probably one of my favorite kind of desserts and I am always looking to try plant based sweets. I will say that these do have a different texture and taste from your typical non vegan donut but I still enjoyed the ones I've tried. This will probably not substitute your traditional donut but it definitely has some unique flavors that are worth checking out if you are ever in Williamsburg. I'm looking forward to trying more of their flavors preferably earlier in the day when it is fresh!
google avatar

Sara B.

Yelp
These donuts are so good that it just doesn't make sense. MUST EAT TO BELIEVE!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Marisa S.

Yelp
The doughnuts are to die for!!!! Never had anything close to these beauties!!! If you don't do, you'll be missing one of the best things in life! LOL
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
A must try donut spot. I COULDNT TELL THEY WERE VEGAN DONUTS! So light and fluffy, the flavors are equally balanced. I tried the Almond donut and the PBJ donut. Both were amazing in their own way. And for the filled PBJ donut, wasn't overwhelming for a filled donut. I usually don't like filled donuts but I would come back to get this one.

Yu Z.

Yelp
Very cute spot for donuts. I wish there was an indoor sitting. There's always a great donut collection. I love to stop by when I'm in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Natasha L.

Yelp
Been coming here since they opened and I still love it. Best donuts, hands down. They no longer allow indoor seating and masks are required when in the building. Even when only one person is working, the line moves quickly. The feel of the place has changed since it's opening because of Covid protocols, but the employees are still friendly and the donuts and drinks are still fantastic. Be sure to arrive early because the best flavors run out quickly!
