The 12 Best Restaurants in Homer and Halibut Cove, Alaska | Eater

"If low-key diner fare is what you seek, the Duncan House Diner on the corner of Main Street and Pioneer Drive has the blueberry pancakes and club sandwiches you require. Filled with antiques and knickknacks, the place definitely has a down-home farm-cooking comfort-food vibe. They’re open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch." - Kris Farmen

Google
Absolutely 💯. The Eggs Bennidict was fantastic as well as the croissant sandwich. It was fast and affordable. We needed a good meal and this one was exceptional 👌 thank you

Google
We arrived about 20 minutes before closing, but were encouraged to come in and sit where we'd like. The menu was simple with sandwiches and breakfast items. We had burgers. They were so juicy and flavorful. I had onion rings with the jalapeño burger. The service was awesome. Definitely 5/5 in all regards. We're happy to support local business. This one is a winner!

Google
They were busy and little slow. Could see workers stressed, but they were polite. The food was homemade and excellent, so worth the wait. The chicken fried steak is breaded by them. Hubby's burger was giant and so tasty. Fun little place to look around while you wait. Definitely be back.

We waited an hour to get a table for meh breakfast dishes. Service was friendly & quick after ordering. Pretty pricey.

Google
Man oh man the breakfast was so good this morning! My son is 7 and a picky eater. He loved his food and I loved my omelet. The atmosphere was great and prices and service were great too. I highly recommend this place to eat and it was so good we will be eating here again tomorrow.

Google
Great Breakfast. You get seated, Then you go order & pay before you eat. Fine by us. It means you can leave quicker. Excellent Pancakes, reindeer sausage , & biscuits & gravy. Wife had a very good country fried steak.

Google
The reviews and photos of this place don’t do it justice! Husband and I came in for a late breakfast. We were greeted with a smile and given options for seating. The waiter brought menus right away and took our drink orders which were brought immediately back to us. Hot coffee with lots of cream for use and a delicious iced tea with lemon (didn’t even have to ask for the lemon!). We put in our food orders and the food was out in less than 10 minutes. We ordered the Express with a side of potatoes and the High Tide with a side pancake. Everything was so delicious and simple, it was hard to believe it came out so quickly! The breakfast sandwich was huge, the pancake was massive, the biscuit was really big for one biscuit, and the eggs were probably more like 3 eggs (even though the dish says 2 eggs). Great food, happy friendly staff, and quick service. Definitely recommend breakfast at Duncan House Diner!

Google
Great recent experience. They specialize in breakfast from and also offer lunch. We saw our wait staff 4 times in the first several minutes and received ordered food promptly.

Yelp
An interesting place, and as it opens very early in the morning, it's a great choice for breakfast. It's always been busy when we've been in. The vibe inside is old-fashioned, and features antique ranges, but it's definitely a no-frills type of place. The staff are on the ball, and get you seated quickly, with drinks being served fast, and with a smile. We were there for breakfast on Saturday morning at 8am, but have also been there for lunch (Their onion rings are amazing) i got the eggs benedict with bacon, potatoes on the side, I'm not sure what husbands was called, but it featured biscuits n gravy, 3 scrambled eggs, and choice of bacon or sausage. We both got coffee, and it's a diner, so they come around with the coffee pot constantly offering refills. Benedict was only average today I'm afraid, my egg yolk was jammy, rather than runny. The hollandaise was unusual, and quite salty - not awful, just not the best I've ever had, but equally it wasn't horrible. It would not stop me coming back. The potatoes - i believe they were frozen, and not fresh. Again, not awful, just not the best I've had. The bacon was good, the muffin was good too. I ate most of it, so obviously it was an acceptable meal. Husband ate everything but half a biscuit. I'd probably rate the food we had today at a 3, though i have had better food here, so this is not a rating set in stone, my experience was a 4 star, as the staff are lovely, and service is very good, and i will still come back.

Yelp
Stopped on our way out of Homer for breakfast. Glad we did. Breakfast and place were great. Located in an older diner that looks authentic Alaska. After coffee we all ordered. My wife and I got the pick three breakfast. Others got the oatmeal, and another chicken fried steak with eggs. Everyone's eggs were perfectly over easy. My wife loved her biscuit and gravy. She said one of best biscuits she has eaten. Others loved their oatmeal with nuts and berries. The chicken fried steak with white gravy was good. Our server was good and kept on top of us.

Yelp
What a great place for breakfast in Homer! Super cute. Super easy to find. And super friendly service. We had about a 10 minute wait which gave us time to look over the menu and some of the history on the walls. Once we were seated at a table our server quickly came over with waters and asked if we wanted anything else to drink. A previous review said it's self service for water - we did not experience that. I had an OJ and my husband at tea. The OJ comes in a massive glass, not the standard water cup size. For breakfast I had the burrito which was super good! I was a little hesitant when it said chipotle tortilla - I wasn't sure what that entailed. I'm still not really sure, but I can say the burrito tortilla was a little crispy which helped keep my burrito together when I ate it. The burrito comes cut in half, which makes eating it way more manageable. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy which he also enjoyed. We will definitely be eating here again when we're in Homer.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. I'm not really sure why this place has a 3 1/2 star rating. We got the schooner which my wife absolutely loved. I got the chicken fried steak. I'm used to a cubed steak but here at Duncan you get an actual legit steak smothered in delicious sausage gravy! This is a must stop in Homer

Yelp
One of the few places open for breakfast at 7 am. Yes, there was a sign that said no outside food or drink allowed. However, I have seen that sign countless times at various restaurants, but this is the first time that the staff didn't allow me to bring my organic latte (which they don't have) inside. So I was annoyed. I stood outside finishing my coffee. My sister in law walked up later and a different staff member gave her a mug to pour her outside coffee into so she could bring it inside. Once inside, our server was friendly. The menu was standard diner food. However, I would say that portion size was not abundant as advertised. The yogurt with fruit and granola was $9, and the serving size was half of a cereal bowl size, with maybe 4 blue berries and one strawberry sliced into 4 pieces and 2 table spoons of granola (doubt home made granola). My 12 year old daughter was still hungry, and she is a small eater. The combo plates for $15 are average size for one person. Taste was average, nothing special, nothing seemed home made. I'm from Southern California, where prices are high. This wasn't worth it. The ambiance was rustic with some antiques out front, which is cute.

Yelp
Great service! Great food in good sized portions, for breakfast there is no better place in Homer! Eclectic decor and easy going atmosphere!

Yelp
One of my favorite things to do while traveling is dining at local breakfast joints, not necessarily always the places spoken and written about the most. I walked by this place a few times and the aroma was definitely drawing me in. The parking lot was always pretty packed too. Yet, the overall Yelp rating was a cause for pause. I am so happy that I followed my instincts or my "gut" in this case , as it was a terrific experience - atmosphere, food, service and prices were all top-notch. I had the biscuits and gravy with reindeer sausage and eggs. Having lived in "the south" for about the last 25 years, I have become really fond of biscuits and gravy and this is one of the best I've ever had. The service was attentive, responsive and sweet. Finally, I just really loved the vibe.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Everything was so good. We got biscuits and gravy, bacon and eggs. The biscuits were perfection and gravy was amazing! Not over priced, Good food, friendly, fast service and nice atmosphere.

Jordan R.

Yelp
I got a salad, that is all it was spinach, dressing, and croutons. Over priced, food was not good, it needs a face lift, old and out dated. Staff was not friendly, treated other customers, w more respect and helped me last, or told me to get my own drink.

Karen C.

Yelp
Food was awesome! Someone who knows how to grill bread on a sandwich!! Wagyu beef was delicious, fries and onion rings crisp and hot. Highly recommend!!

Edward P.

Yelp
Great for breakfast , huge portions. Friendly staff . Plenty of parking fast service. Clean

Yelp
It's AK, it's the Last Frontier, you're in Homer, at the end of the freaken road -- we can probably agree to cut Duncan House a little slack and that's something I rarely if ever do but really this isn't some culinary capital of the world. I wasn't here expecting the most insane delish brekke I've ever consumed, it's a freaken diner people! No outside drinks allowed in, stopped me in my tracks. I tend to like to get coffee from a coffee shop and if I'm eating a sit down brekke, I'll bring it along. Not in this part of town, the sign is posted on the door but I missed it so we sipped our lattes out front until we were finished and ready to head indoors. I suppose with the way this trip was going, during this shoulder season with everything closed - I could have had a cup full of something way stronger than an oat latte from next door. I had the biscuit with gravy and eggs and bacon. Finished every last bite. My friend had the reindeer sausage plate, I tried a bite and left it in my napkin. I'll leave reindeer to decor around my house during the month of December. We were the only ones in there first thing in the morning, then a couple came in later. We were sat immediately and service was great. You'll be hard pressed to find open places to dine in this time of year, so if brekke or lunch is what you're looking for in a sit down environment this is a solid choice.

Yelp
No table service. Get your own drinks . Food passable. Not how I want to eat when going to restaurant. They still expect tips when only service provided is bring food to table. Prices same as full service competitors.

Yelp
Excellent food; wonderful menu options; professional staff; our 'go to' local restaurant in Homer, Alaska

David P.

Yelp
Wow we had the best breakfast had to wait 25 minutes but I would have waited 45 to eat here! Great service and neat atmosphere- my wife and I split a breakfast burrito and the garden scramble! Yummy!

Gtdrydfhdytg N.

Yelp
Price gouging at its finest. the smallest portions I've ever seen and you will still leave hungry. And it's not very good food at all. Only in business to rip off tourists. Service is horrible. someone said that even locals avoid it apparently. Eat at your own risk.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while. Was very disappointed. Chicken fried steak was just hohum. The not sausage gravy was blah, toast and bacon over done and dry.

Rebecca N.

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for a good place to have breakfast together on our last morning in Homer. The food was delicious and ALL the staff was incredible. They made sure our coffee was always topped off and made us feel welcomed. There was a sweet, young gentleman (not sure his name, but had a ponytail) working hard and really did a great job. He made sure we had everything we needed and went out of his way to check to see if they had any cinnamon rolls, that I'd been craving. It was delicious! My husband had the chicken fried steak and he said it's the best he's ever had (that's a bold statement)! Thank you Duncan House Dinner!

Jill R.

Yelp
We stopped by for a quick breakfast as I had an hour before needing to be at the airport. We waited for quite some time before politely asking the waitress if we could order, explainingour timeconstraint. Next thing I know, the manager is at our table accusing me of harassing his staff. I told him he was being presumptuous to which he responded by pointing to the camera. I wanted to suggest he review the video and LISTEN to what was said. Instead, I simply said thank you and left. Incredibly rude and disrespectful. Absolutely will never return and certainly would not recommend.

Yelp
Loud. Very loud. But very clean, nice staff, clean parking lot. Plenty of parking. Service is a bit slow. But over all impressed

Yelp
This was our first meal when we got to Homer. We had a very early flight from Fairbanks to get here and didn't get a chance to have breakfast so we were famished and needed to eat. First thing I found in yelp was Duncan House Diner and I am glad we gave it a try. First, for all the keto peeps, they have a High Protein breakfast which is what I ate. I love it when restaurants offer carb free options without having to go a la carte. The dish consisted of eggs with cheese, ham and reindeer sausage. I did get a side of hollandaise so it felt like eating Eggs Benedict without the English muffin. My dad had a biscuit and gravy dish and it looked good. Our meal was good and they kept the coffee flowing. The service was good. Our waitress was friendly and the let us sit and relax while eating and didn't make us feel rushed. Decor was like and old country diner feel. Very nice start to a great vacation.

Yelp
Excellent breakfast spot in Homer! Currently only offering to-go, via window order/pickup. But the food was fresh, hot, and delicious! Highly recommend the reindeer breakfast sausage. The breakfast burrito was great!

Haley S.

Yelp
Food was very good, it felt warm and cozy. The service was friendly and timely will definitely be eating there again!

Teresa K.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Food never arrived and we asked the server several times where our order was we got a very unconvincing answer of "a few minutes". Tables all around the restaurant that were seated later than us were done with their meals and the servers never noticed we had not gotten any food. We finally got someone to check and were told that our meals had to be refired (most likely because they delivered our food to another table.) When we asked when our meals would be done, the answer was at least another 15 minutes and not much concern or offer to make things right considering we'd already waited 45 mins so we left. Very disappointing.

Camille M.

Yelp
No more waitresses. Have to order from the counter. Ordered the 3 pick half biscuit, 1 egg and Reindeer sausage. The sausage was 1.5 inches long. I inquired if this was a whole half of sausage. The cook-said it was a new brand if sausage. The cook yelled at us. When I apologized he said I was not forgiven. He walked away. He came back then I apologized again. Then he slammed the money we paid on the table in front of us. He told me to shut up several times. He said it was my fault the customers were waiting for their food now. He said he is the owner now. He stood over us yelling at us. So we had to leave and did not finish our breakfast. Last time we ever go to Duncan House.

Yelp
We found this gem the other day visiting Homer. What a wonderful diner to eat at. Breakfast was spot on. Staff was very attentive atmosphere was the best. Love the decor they have a truly hidden gem here. A must go to when in Homer!

Yelp
Friendly and tasty local diner packed with people from Homer. We ordered a light breakfast and enjoyed it. Good people watching. The service is unique and not fast-paced so don't come if you are pressed for time, which we thankfully were not. Would visit again.

Yelp
I searched online to find somewhere in homer that had country fried steak and eggs and came across Duncan's Diner. I ordered online and was give a 25 minute pick up for window, I got there in 15 and my food was waiting and ready to go despite that fact that they were busy. My food was warm and soo good. My husband got the eggs Benedict and side of French toast and he raves about it. It was very well priced and delicious I definitely will be going back the next time I stop on homer. Thank you for the wonderful service and great food.

Eric V.

Yelp
VRBO owner recommended this place. We were a group of 6. We waited twenty minutes while we could see a party of one at a huge table finished with her meal. Ok, maybe not restaurants fault but should party of one be seated at that table? Ok about the service. Amazingly slow. Food, four were ok, chili was literally cold. No, not warm, it was cold. Egg sandwich, "the high tide" was a soggy gross nearly meatless POS served with about 6 cubes of potatoes. The chicken fried steak looked good. Group of 6 was $156 dollars. Go to McDonald would be better use if time and money. VRBO review will be weak too.

Yelp
We were on our way out of town and didn't want to hit any of the spots on the Spit. This place popped up and well worth the stop. Was craving a burger that clearly did not disappoint. The character of this place is really cool and sat next to a fellow Texan, Randy, who was cruising Alaska on his motorcycle. The cup of chili was delicious too. Don't miss this spot.

Yelp
Very nice staff! Helpful and quick even being short staffed- super yummy food! Great coffee!

Yelp
We loved this Diner! the portions were huge! We split a breakfast and still couldn't finish it. Loved the service and the décor. And of course the food was awesome!

Yelp
Not one to post bad reviews, but this was not acceptable. My girlfriend, who is a military veteran, and I stopped in to eat, with her small service dog(in her box), after getting a recommendation from a local shop owner, saying they had recently re-opened. After we were seated, a man(who we found out later, was the owner), came to the table, and asked about the animal. We both said she had a service dog; he responded that he couldn't see a vest. He continued berating us, demanding information, to prove what we stated. I responded that federal ADA rules state clearly that he can only ask if it was performing its duty. He interrupted, saying that we needed to show proof, because DEC "provides his license". We again stated that it was a service animal. He then responded with a snotty "now that was easy, wasn't it", with no follow up apology. When I confronted him again, finding out that he was the owner, he stated he also had a disability, couldn't hear us telling him that it was a service dog, and he stated, again with a sarcastic tone "so, not all disabilities are visible, right?". I tried to explain calmly, that his attitude was unprofessional and he was out of line, and an apology was in order. He continued giving excuses about his actions, refusing to apologize. He was rude throughout. We left. We lost our appetite and he should be reported for harassing a disabled veteran. If you are a veteran, AVOID THIS ESTABLISHMENT.

Yelp
Good comfort food for a good price. If you come to Homer in the winter, on a weekend, this will likely be one of the only places you can get breakfast! It's a diner which means the toast is buttered and you pay at the front. Staff here is ridiculously kind and friendly. I got the breakfast burrito, with some modifications. It came out as TWO mini burritos, rather than one, large, unwieldy burrito you have to eat with fork & knife. I much preferred this setup, who wants a burrito you can't eat with your hands?!
google avatar

Ashley L.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast! Huge portions and good prices. Pancakes were GIANT. Chicken fried steak was hand breaded & super tender, came with a generous portion of eggs and potatoes.
google avatar

Amber K.

Yelp
We stopped for an early breakfast this morning- no wait which was nice and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Nice sized menu with a full breakfast side and then a lunch side. We had coffees and tea and two omelette and a corned beef hash. The omelets were a great size and stuffed with right in the middle with a ton of the toppings (we did a ham and cheese with had large cubes of ham and the bacon/cheese/onion- lots of bacon and sautéed onions)- the cheese melted on top which just the right amount. The home fries were a bit undercooked and lacked seasoning, but not bad. A bit of added salt and we dipped some in a side of the sausage gravy. The gravy was flavorful but very thick so a little goes along way! Our friend had the hash and home fries smothered in gravy and said it was excellent. The rye toast was great and not over or under buttered, service was paced well and prices are great. Nice atmosphere, decent parking lot and the restrooms were clean. The food options are fairly simple but they are varied, done well and priced right- and the great service made it better. Well done! We will be back!

Adam M.

Yelp
Big portions, very tasty. Good quick service, nice atmosphere. Excellent rye bread, was a nice relief from several poor dining experiences during our vacation. Would definitely visit again.
google avatar

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
I had the sausage gravy and biscuit, it was just OK. Big portions, priced in line with all other Alaska fare. Nothing uniquely "Alaskan" about it, just a nice little diner.

Roy W.

Yelp
We were told a 35 to 45 minute wait when we arrived. It ended up being well over an hour before we were seated. Then we were told they were busy and it would be at least another 30 minutes from ordering before we could hope to get our food. There were at least three empty tables at that point. Not worth waiting for. Lots of inefficiency in operating, at least today. Table busing was not happening with any sense of urgency. No clear indication of who was (not) running things.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
This place had the worst service ever. It took forever for them to give us our drinks and then we had to flag them down to take our meal order because they were too busy taking phone orders and putting in phone orders before the orders of the people the people that were actually in the restaurant. One server had their family come in and we witnessed them give them excellent service while they gave us the bare minimum service that we had to assist with by flagging them down every time we needed help. Food was generic cafeteria equivalent fare.
google avatar

Anthony J.

Yelp
Don't come here horrible service staff wanted us to sit in the corner table while I asked for them to clean a booth further down the way. Wait staff that the other table wasn't available. I asked her to clean it and then we sat down. We had to ask for water and wait for someone for a while to get drinks. We flagged down someone to order our food waited around for our waiting for at least 10 minutes. We finally ordered and got our food. Breakfast doesn't even come with toast. ordered toast and it came out ten minutes later not even toasted. I will never come back and I don't suggest you either. There's was people who were behind us in line left waiting 15 minutes to order.
google avatar

Ellie H.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot! The service was very friendly but also very slow even though the restaurant was not busy. However, the quality and tastiness of the food made up for the slow service. Typical diner atmosphere inside the restaurant.
google avatar

Al F.

Yelp
A friend told me to check them out for breakfast. Right off the bat I noticed the cool antique decor everywhere. The mugs they brought us were from different places like Hawaii. The salt and pepper shakers were from Busch Gardens in Florida. Interesting. I ordered the express and the biscuit and gravy was delicious. Portions are plenty. Overall a cool place to get a decent breakfast without breaking the bank. Their hours are not all day so double check before you head out. It isn't on the spit, but located in the business district. Oh and if you drink coffee, they are quick with refills.

Larry M.

Yelp
The best place in Homer for breakfast, I am sure other meals are excellent also, we only ate breakfast. Fast, friendly service reasonable prices and delicious food. Will go here again when in Homer.
google avatar

Polly R.

Yelp
Great food, great service and very cozy old Homer/ Alaska atmosphere! Highly recommend! You feel like a welcome local:)

Amanda S.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast spot in Homer. Cozy diner decor, friendly service (I've never had an empty cup in this restaurant!), and classic, consistent, delicious breakfast! Decent (for Alaska) prices too, the $9 "Full Sail" is my favorite plate - 4 slices of bacon and 2 slices of french toast... the only reason my review is missing a star is for DHD's lack of breakfast potato options, their home fries are good but I'm partial to hash browns and those aren't on the menu.

Jennifer B.

Yelp
We went to lunch on 8/2/2020 . I understandable it's tough for places. I will not go back again! Covid or not! They said we would have to wait 15 mins. It took 45. Then we ordered, our food was served on paper plates, plastic fork and spoon. I ordered a coke - which I knew cam in a can. No , glass with ice- our waters were in plastic cups. If I wanted to eat at a take out place I would have gone somewhere else. I spent enough money to have everything served on paper plates! Disappointed and disgusting. If my friends who come to visit, I will make sure we will not go there!
google avatar

Trudi K.

Yelp
Tastefully tasty Came for breakfast early morning and were greeted with friendly smiling faces and great service. Try the Bud#2 breakfast burrito.a hearty delicious way to begin your day! My husband had the protein and now wants to come back for lunch as they serve breakfast all day. Atmosphere is comfortable and cozy with an ol time country diner feel. Lots of memorabilia from the 50's and 60's to look at adorn the walls even the front grill of a Chevy truck! If in Homer you must make this one of your stops. Just know it will most likely turn into a regular thing. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Me and my husband stopped here for breakfast and Had an awful experience. A very nice bus girl seated us and we recognized her from the seafood house from the evening before. She went to go get our beverages and ask a question of the kitchen, for us, about an item in the menu. Then we were approached by a"waiter", and we think it was the owners son in law. We created small talk by saying nice things about the girl and that she bussed our table the night before. He said "she does not work anywhere else" and talked down about her in a rude derogatory way. It felt "creepy" and very uncomfortable. As we placed our orders, we felt queazy about his behavior. Then we see our bus girl exit out of the back of the restaurant on her bike. I grabbed another waitress and asked where she was going and she said, she got fired "on the spot" for having two food related jobs! We were in total SHOCK! We since have been told that most locals have to have multiple jobs in order to make ends meet and support their families. Many of which work at multiple food jobs. WE IMMEDIATELY WALKED OUT - NEVER TO RETURN or RECOMMEND this diner!
