Best Places to Eat and Drink in Northern Michigan for Viewing Fall Leaves | Eater Detroit

"I like to linger at Dune Bird’s modern, Scandinavian-style tasting room in Leelanau County — it’s a relaxed place to while away an afternoon, and there’s even an espresso machine for the designated driver." - Stacey Brugeman

We had a lovely afternoon visit with friends. We tasted six different wines and liked them all. We enjoyed the whitefish dip and spinach artichoke snacks, also the very interesting and tasty olives! The Indian runner duck round up was fun to see, and Ron the cat was very polite. The setting is beautiful and peaceful. We hated to leave our idyllic spot by the pond. The highlight, though, was the staff. Every person we encountered was fun, friendly and knowledgeable.

Just lovely! The wine was great, the staff was sweet and knowledgeable, and the location was unbeatable. I went solo and ended up chatting with a ton of people. Great vibe and you can’t beat these views; plus the wood fired pizza was delightful. Highly recommend! The outdoors is dog friendly. It was also kid friendly and there is a little play structure on the property for them as well.

We loved everything about our visit to Dune Bird! A huge shoutout to Jackson—such a kind and cool guy—and to Emily, who went above and beyond in coordinating our visit. The setting and tasting room are absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed our tasting outside with our son and puppy. Our son played on the swing set, we walked around the vineyard while hunting for four-leaf clovers and soaked up the sunshine. The charcuterie board was fabulous, and the wine—exceptional. Dune Bird does wine very well. I especially loved the sparkling and both reds. The reds were both dry and refined. We can’t wait to come back again!

Amazing stop on a trip around the Leelenau peninsula. Wine options were good. The coffee was excellent (we got a shot of espresso poured over custard). I had a sangria which was one of 4 “spritzer” options. Great stop!! Delightful staff.

This was a super cool spot that I had never been to. I have gone to TC and Leelenau several times, but I assume this place is newer based on the decor and the fact that I had never heard of it. So, I had to make a stop for at least one. The decor was awesome - I honestly am not sure why they had an airplane theme throughout the building, but it looked very cool. I couldnt help myself but to check out every room/seating area because I wanted to see all of the decor. There was a ton of seating - indoors, outdoors, in separate rooms, by a fireplace, near a pond, at the bar, in comfy seating, or at tables. The lady pouring the wine was super friendly, told us all about the place, about the wine. They even have a small espresso menu!! I only tasted two wines, a red and a rosé, and they were both good! Sadly, there were only a few couples there, and that was it. It was such a cool place, that I am hoping they are busier at some point!

Google
Our starting point on our Leelanau wine tour, and our most favorite also. Michigan wines tend to be on the sweeter side and we prefer a medium dry wine. GHV had a nice blend of both. The building is decorated beautifully and the seating area put by the water is adorable. Def recommend a stop here on your tour!

We LOVED this place. It was beautiful with great views, a huge duck flock and free range chickens who looked plump and healthy. The tasting room was clean and modern with Napa Vibes. Finally, the wine was good. It was not terribly sweet and a great selection of dry options. We will definitely come back.

My Husband and I were here yesterday and absolutely loved it! Might be my new favorite. Great wine selection and the coffee bar is a great addition for coffee lovers like my Hubby. The staff is amazing and so friendly. I loved the welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Charming Winery with a beautiful setting...gorgeous landscaping around the pond. Loved the wine and the hard cider. Looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
The best winery we visited in Traverse!!! Our friends had biked here when they visited a few months back and we were elated to try a winery none of us had experienced! It's exactly what you want in a cozy small business winery! Walking into the location, there's a pond w outdoor tables and Adirondack chairs. We had the best service w Sharlene- who poured our flights, Flora, Emily and Lily were very attentive and friendly, assisting w our questions and education of the property... the Manitou was soooo good and wish I could've purchased bottles but they were on reserve since they were low on their inventory. Tear. I also want to mention that we watched the ducks come out to eat! It put a happy face on everyone outside!

Yelp
We never been here before. We get stuck in our ways and go to the same places over and over. I'm glad we came here to try some wines and eat some snacks and enjoy the view. All the wines we tried were great. We liked the white sparkling wine and the late harvest Riesling. We got the white fish pate from fishtown, always yummy. The outdoor patio was beautiful, and they have an indoor area to sit if weather wasn't good. 16 bucks for a wine flight with good pours. I also loved that they had an espresso bar. I needed caffeine and got a iced maple latte that was yummy.

Yelp
A little hidden gem. Nestled in the rolling hillside, among their grape vineyards and fruit trees in Leelanau Peninsula wine country. Great ambiance sitting next to their little pond. Ideal on a sunny day sipping wine and enjoying small plates. We had the whitefish dip, with toasted pita points and celery. The whitefish dip was very fresh and had excellent flavor. Definitely worth checking out! The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
We loved our little afternoon pit stop to sit with our little dog outside and try a flight of wine with coffee for my hubby. Our service was amazing from describing the wines to making our choices. Such a BEAUTIFUL place and left with a couple bottles of wine for home.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite wine bar and coffee houses in the leelanau peninsula! They had live music playing and is a great spot to catch up with friends, take care of some work while using their WiFi, or just take in the views. All of the staff were very friendly and you simply cannot go wrong with either their coffee or wine!

Yelp
My experience at Dune Bird, from the chic aesthetic, to the delicious wine, to the incredibly welcoming staff, exceeded my expectations, and I'm so glad we stopped here. The vibe was friendly and relaxed, and, being a boutique winery, it felt like they really cared about your individual enjoyment of the establishment. I wish I could've spent more time here. And I also love that they give some proceeds of sales of a certain bottle to saving the dune birds.

Yelp
Dune Bird hasn't been around all that long, but it has quickly risen to the top of the list of our favorite wineries in Michigan. No trip to the Leelanau Peninsula is complete without stopping at DB. Whether we go early to enjoy a delicious coffee or stop by for some wine, we love sitting outside in the beautiful space they've created for their guests. We recently joined their wine club as I can't get enough of their wonderful wines. My favorites are the AV8 and Unoaked Chardonnay.

Yelp
Wine and coffee? I'll take it! This is a must stop if you're in the Leelanau area. My husband did a tasting and I opted for the affogato. The espresso was amazing, it was smooth and paired perfect in my affogato. The wine was pretty good too. The staff were all very friendly and the inside had a couple different rooms you could sit in. My favorite was the outdoor space it is very large, and I loved the view of the pond. It was a chilly, cool day when we came, but they also have patio blankets you can use so you can still enjoy the outdoors.

Yelp
They may be closed for the season but when they reopen, you gotta get here! Because, wow! What a wonderful space. My family and I were staying near by and one day, driving around, we passed this place and I made a mental note because it looked really cute as far as I could tell. The next day we drove by again and noticed that in addition to the winery they also had a coffee bar. That's all we needed to know so we pulled off to go get our afternoon pick me up. I was so pleasantly overwhelmed by what we found. The seating area outside is just absolutely picturesque with the vineyards, small pond, tree, lovely blankets and chairs for gathering both on the grass and the patio, and beautiful gardens. On a sunny day it was a vision to behold! The building itself was really cool inside, with a minimalist rustic vibe of sorts? They had the aforementioned coffee counter along with a bar that included not just their wine options but mocktails made with some locally made spirits. They also had a light menu of food like spring rolls and bruschetta. Perfect for a little snack with a nice glass of wine or an espresso. Ultimately we were just rolling through so we didn't stay long but I absolutely cannot wait to go back. It's definitely a new destination for us in when we're out there for vacation.

Yelp
Great addition to Leelanlau wineries! We went twice during our trip to the area as we enjoyed it so much. It is a bit further out from the other wineries, but worth the trip. The interior is modern, with a bar that includes a coffee bar. The other side of the bar has an outdoor window. The weather was beautiful during our visit trip, and we took advantage of the outdoor space. They have a good amount of seating area, with a view of their pond, as well as some yard games. A small play set and the open area made this child, as well as dog, friendly. The wine list is small, this may because they are new, but better good wines than a giant list of mediocre wines. They also have some small plates, we really liked the spring rolls. Lovely winery, can not wait to return.

Yelp
First of all this winery is one of the most beautiful in northern Michigan. The aesthetic inside is upscale, clean, modern, and fun. The outside has lots of space to spread out on the patios or lawn. They have a small food menu that's more like tapas/appetizers but we made a lunch of it. The charcuterie is generous and better than others we've had at other wineries in Traverse City. We enjoyed our flights so much that we shipped some home to WA and my local mom joined the wine club. The staff there are attentive, friendly and helpful. They also have coffee and a few cookie options available. I really appreciate that it's kid friendly. They have a bunch of toys and games to borrow, a play set and yard games. We relaxed and enjoyed a few hours here.

Yelp
Awesome spot for wine tasting. We brought our 4 year old and he had a blast playing with the toys they had out for kiddos. Highly recommend if you're looking for a beautiful outdoor location and want to keep your kids entertained :)

Yelp
Great wine, great service, lovely live music! Love Dune Bird Winery!!! The snack options are nice and they have a wonderful gourmet coffee machine!

Yelp
Dune Bird Winery is in a beautiful location with a great outdoor space and atmosphere. I always make sure to stop by when I am visiting this part of Michigan. The wine, food, and coffee are all spectacular. My only complaint about Dune Bird is every time I order coffee the staff literally roll their eyes and get visibly annoyed. This experience with staff has happened back to back years now and I have no idea why. If coffee is that annoying maybe it shouldn't be a staple menu item. I will still continue to visit this winery with family and friends but this detail about the staff must be called out as it has now happened more than once. One note of importance though is that most of the staff are great, it's only the people who make coffee that treat customers differently.

Miriam H.

Yelp
Great service. Awesome vibe. Good music and yummy food & wine! We'll be back again! Thanks Dune Bird for an awesome day :)

Yelp
Since I've been working in the Leelanau wine industry myself, I love checking out all the great wineries that customers recommend! Recently, everyone has been raving about Dunebird so I figured I would check it out myself. One flight of wine later, and I'm obsessed!! This winery has a great setting, perfect location, cool atmosphere, friendly and amazing staff, delish wines, and great food. I will surely be recommending this winery to other people and I will also be coming back in the future!

Gloria D.

Yelp
Amazing winery. Wine is fabulous as is the service. 5 stars! Would highly recommend.

Yelp
Great addition. The tasting room is stylish and serene. In addition to wine, they serve espresso beverages. Their Unoaked Chardonnay and Rose are great! Very pleasant surprise on our fist visit.

Yelp
Great views, excellent service. I had a cider that was superb. Food was very tasty. Highly recommended for anyone who wants the best of Leelanau County. The owners have a history of not only supporting our community, but international commitment as well. As a local resident for a half century, this is a must visit!

Yelp
Located in the former "Gill's Pier" facility, the new owners have totally renovated this winery. Most importantly, the wine is GREAT!!! I think they have the best Riesling up here, my husband loves their Pinot Gris. The food is great!! Try the spring rolls and fish dip plates. I also LOVE that they have a coffee bar as well! As I am often the designated driver for our family, I love to get their vanilla latte with oat milk....SO GOOD!!! The new owners are so pleasant and they have really upgraded this facility and keep adding more.....if you haven't been here yet, give it a try. It is one of our favorites to just sit and relax. They sometimes have entertainment as well

Yelp
This is our favorite winery near Leland. Located between beaches in Northport and Leland, a great place to checkout. Highly reccomend the sparkling and rose. Service is great. Owners are hands on and interactive. Plenty of fun stuff for the kids. Can't wait to head back!

Yelp
Great vibe, great service, and good leelanau wine. Sunday hours are the best since you can hang a little longer and stretch the weekend

Yelp
What a fun addition for coffee drinks or wine north of Leland! We stopped by with a group of 10 and had a lovely time out back by the pond enjoying tasting flights, individual pours and tasty treats (olives, humus plate, spring rolls, artichoke dip) followed up by delicious coffee drinks. Thanks Sarah for taking great care of us. See you again soon Dune Birds.
