"If you know you’ll be eating solo lunch at your desk today, you better find something good to shove into your mouth. That’s where Dune comes in. The tiny Mediterranean cafe in the Fashion District offers a few outdoor tables where you can eat some of LA’s best falafel, but it also functions as a well-oiled takeout operation. Everything from the enormous falafel sandwiches to the hummus plates with lamb, flatbread, and marinated cabbage is excellent, but our go-to is the chermoula-drenched fried chicken shawarma sandwich. "New kid on the Glendale Blvd block, over the counter falafel joint Dune has fast become a neighborhood favorite for lunch and dinner crowds. Take your east coast friends who bemoan LA’s lack of quality falafel, and watch them eat their words along with an incredible falafel sandwich on delicious cooked-to-order pita bread. "Dune might appear to be just another neighborhood falafel joint, but crowds form outside this tiny Atwater restaurant for a reason—there’s not one miss on the menu. That includes their top-tier falafel, silky sides of hummus, grilled lamb plates, and their pièce de résistance: the fried chicken “shawarma” sandwich, which is easily one of the best in LA. "Dune is an order-at-the-counter Mediterranean spot with locations in Atwater Village and Downtown. While you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, your first order of business should be the green herb falafel sandwich, which involves perfectly crisp falafel on house flatbread topped with hummus, marinated onions, tahini sauce, and shoestring potatoes. "Dune has the falafel sandwich down to a science, with each component syncing harmoniously like an overly enthusiastic show choir troupe. For starters, the falafel here is very big and very green with tons of herbs like cilantro and parsley bringing a natural freshness to the fried patties. It’s also pleasantly garlicky, which pairs super well with the sandwich’s nutty hummus and tangy pickled turnips. Served on the house flatbread, this sandwich has a lot going on with its crispy shoestring potatoes and fresh herbs as well, but the falafel still shines as the brightest soloist of the group." - sylvio martins
