Where to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Eve in Boston | Eater

"This old-school dive set along the aforementioned route is named after a legendary Irish woman whose homemade whiskey, called poteen, was said to cure all ills. The bar’s answer to poteen seems to be its list of house shots, like the Irish Breakfast whiskey shot chased with OJ and bacon, or the Dublin Donkey with whiskey, butterscotch schnapps, whipped vodka, and coffee. It’s the perfect stopover on the crawl when you’re ready to try something different." - Molly McDonough

Google
This was our first stop after checking into our hotel. We had a couple Cold Snaps on tap and enjoyed some conversation with the bartender. Pretty neat collection of police & fire department patches around the bar. Bartender referred us to Pauli's for lunch and it was a great place to eat.

Google
We tried this place while in town. This is a dive bar for sure and they claim nothing more. We sat at the bar and were greeted right away by Conner who got our drink orders. Very much like a local dive bar and had a few locals in there. Lot of tourist also show up. Very loud in such a small area, but very nice and cannot wait to return. Enjoyed the patches from all over the country and the world. Very nice collection.

Google
We stopped in for one beer to check it out, and the bartender was the best bartender we have had in Boston yet! We had great conversation and he gave us some other Irish pub recommendations to continue on our walk. Great atmosphere, very cute place!

Christol Schultz

Google
Friendly service, good drinks. We vote yes 😊

Ryan Gerlich

Google
A small dive bar, popular with fire fighters across the country, very Boston. A live Irish guitar player was very fun, and loud. Loved it, hope to be back.

Google
Went in with a group of friends from various states. Mine and a friend's Illinois ID's were called sketchy and denied. Reading other reviews, they definitely seem to just either not know shit or care to learn out of state IDs. Not for tourists, go to Bell and Hand.

Ryan Kuhl

Google
Great little dive bar worth visiting. Only complaint was the heat inside the bar, however, the weather recently has been abnormally hot. About what you’d expect from a dive bar but with a better selection of beer and liquor

Google
Just had beer but got to hang with the locals so it was a fun time.

Yelp
Proper pint. Served in a Guinness glass. Hard to believe you have to say that, but I've had bubbly topped Guinness in an unbranded short pint glass before. Close to Canopy if you're staying there. Loved the windows that opened up too. Just a good dive bar. Good for drinking. Their well Chardonnay was LaCrema too. That's a nice score for my gal.

Yelp
I've been to Durty Nelly's a few times, day and night, and love it every time I go. No frills, but a solid spot that's relatively tourist free. I've found the bartenders to be efficient and fun to be around and the place to have a great atmosphere with AWESOME music playing. No food here, but a great spot for pre or post dinner drinks - and the Guinness was PERFECT, one of the best pours I've ever had. A place I'll continue to go whenever I'm in Boston/the North End.

Yelp
What a welcome sight for tourists who tend to be annoyed by other tourists. It was a relief to find a cool dark place to escape the heat while waiting for a dinner rez at the 200 year old Union Oyster House. At the small bar there were 3 other guys besides us who, to set the scene, I've decided were retired homicide detectives. All over the bar, police patches from literally everywhere. A couple TVs, I think. The bartender, per my imagination and right out of central casting, was a former outlaw biker who decided to leave the life and take a day job. I really don't know because he didn't say much, but he was there when our glasses were empty. 5 stars for doing what other people are complaining about.

Leigh M.

Yelp
Disgusting Guinness. I don't think they clean the pipes. True hole in the wall, not in a good way. Dirty, bugs everywhere. Rude staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Local police bar/dive bar. Not recommended for tourists. Staff probably won't be nice to ya unless you're a familiar face. I've been a few times and still don't get the red carpet haha Only been in a few times for a quick blast, not the spot to hang all night. Go find a different bar to watch your non-NE sports at. Had a nice bartender last time I was in. Keep your convos brief and drink orders simple and you'll be alright, if you insist on going in. If you're LE or FD or military, you'll like this spot. If you're a tourist from california, this might not be the bar for you.

Yelp
For the best Green tea shots go see Owen. We spent 5 days in Boston and wanted to find a dive bar where locals would go. This is by far the best. Good people, good drinks & just a down to earth atmosphere. Thank you Owen for taking care of us.

Kevin G.

Yelp
Great ambience, drinks, food and service. Fun place to go on a trip to Boston. Right on the waterfront.

Yelp
Nice little dive bar near a lot of different places to shop and eat. Stop in for a drink and head to another spot. Bartender was right over and small enough for you n out to be forgotten! Would stop by again.

Yelp
I went to this establishment last night with a few friends, a friend we were with had gone here before when he visited Boston before and like it so much he also got merch. So he suggested we go here for our first night in Boston being we're from Connecticut and came for the weekend. We came here twice last night, the first time we came In was a nice experience we decided to leave and explore around Boston. We came back a bout 2 hours later and that was terrible experience. My friends went in to get drinks i stood out side with my boyfriend and sat down cause we had been walking majority the day. My friend told us to come in cause they got the drinks, the security guy was very rude he told me I wasn't allowed in due to the fact I was to intoxicated, which I wasn't I told him I'm not and i wasn't going to be partaking in drinking anyways and explained that I been walking all day. So I was tired he still refused as other people that were belligerent he allowed in while trying to arguing with me when I'm speaking to him calmly. My friends explain the same thing to the security that I was he than proceeded to push up and get in my boyfriends face. My friends explain that's they don't feel comfortable leaving me outside alone in a city I don't know, I'm a petite 4'11 woman. He said he didn't care I was a liability walking in there. He starts getting loud and very rude with my friends just trying to explain what's going on as the have already got there drinks and the bartender a heavier set man starts to cuss at the am and the them telling them to get the fuck out. The service was horrific. There were other costumers confused on the incident agreeing with me being fine and talking calmly while he was the person that began to get loud and angry. Either way terrible experience and service wouldn't come here again or ever recommend it.

Yelp
My favorite place in Boston! Great hometown pub where they actually know you. They play great music also. The bartender great guy and he knows how to pull a beer and mix a drink. Definitely a local bar so if your from out of town don't show it here by asking the bartender to change a Boston Bruins game to some random Wisconsin game. Yes that actually happened. Props to the bartender who handled it well.

Yelp
In Boston for a couple days and wanted to grab drinks somewhere laid back rather than fancy. Found this place on Yelp and got confirmation from a buddy going to school out here that this was a good spot. It's small.. but had an Irishman playing guitar and singing (boom). But it was the owner who made the night for us. I'm not even going to try to spell her name but she was great! Had a group of women with me and she made sure the male patrons were all respectful at all times while still being the life of the party. What was supposed to be a drink to end the night turned into several drinks and a memorable evening. We'll be back the next time in Boston for sure.

Yelp
Back alley bar with lots of local characters and cheap drinks. No food here fyi. I will be back every trip.

Yelp
We needed a place to watch the rest of the Pats game and have a couple beers and Durty Nelly's was there for us. I wouldn't necessarily recomend watching games here because the TVs are tiny by no means plentiful... which is fine. It was what we needed in a pinch. Makes sense too because the place is pretty tiny inside. We came in from cold and took the area in the back. Only a few other patrons in there and seemed like a go to spot for locals. Drinks were cheap and service efficient. I hear they pack it out in the summertime with outdoor space too.

Yelp
Friendly, welcoming and I love how they honor the first responders. Thank you!! America needs more establishments like here. Tom is an awesome bartenders.

Megan M.

Yelp
Service was terrible. Bartender seemed to hate people and his job. Not sure why he even still works there. Very rude to my aunt who wanted to go in there for a drink after a long day. Felt very unsafe and unwanted in an establishment where I was spending my hard earned money.
google avatar

Har F.

Yelp
A fun place for sure. Great place to just hang out, relax, have a drink, good conversation and watch some Seinfeld.
google avatar

Nerissa C.

Yelp
Cute, little bar that's basic and good. We hit it off very well with the bartender who is super friendly and attentive. I wanted a hot toddy but they didn't serve warm drinks. So I opted for a Diet Pepsi while my husband got a Guinness on tap. Overall, this is a place that you could get very comfortable with and frequent all the time.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Clearly a local police bar. What you see is what you get. I'd recommended going in for a drink and moving on else where. Staff is okay. Space is small. Plenty of other bars to go to!

Lynn G.

Yelp
Dive bar. Go at your your own peril. First guy told us to bring our drinks to the back patio - where we sat and watched rats scurry down the alley. We survived. Then they told us the back patio was closed. So we sat at bar. All we had were Irish whiskeys with soda. Bartender Seamus was scary and mean. Tried to be nice. Asked him about his day. He just threw nasty looks and attended to young girls. So Go only for a drink and no atmosphere.

Aaron A.

Yelp
Great pub great atmosphere awesome service super friendly staff and great drinks it's right in the middle of Boston action very fun pub
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a few drinks after a bruins game last weekend. Place is awesome and the bar tender on shift was great. Great little bar with an old time "southie bar" feel. Will definitely be back!

Matt H.

Yelp
So we walked in. This bartender called my fiancé drunk. After that he said that my friend smoked a vape and that he would not serve us. My friend then said "I apologize" then he said " I'm not serving you" we come to Boston for a great weekend because we love it. Bars, beers, great place to hang out. This place couldn't have been more in inviting... I would never recommend this place. Bartender was a complete asshole.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
There are dive bars, and there are douche bars... This predatory spot is the latter, poorly managed, cold, and understaffed. The staff constantly complained and frankly didn't care about service at all. Sadly, this spot has deteriorated to a must avoid. They blame the new construction, ownership, et al. Avoid this place with your GF, or ladies out with your friends especially. Dangerous spot, dark alley, drunks and poor management

Yelp
More like Shitty Nelly's. We came in just after 1pm and there 2 bartenders. It was quiet so I strolled I'm with a loud "hello!" No one responded. So I said the person that walked over to help us. What happen it's too early? Should we come back? He responded, I've been here since 9am, where have you been. I laughed and thought we "broke the ice." We ordered and the person fetching our beer went back to his group conversation and the other end of the bar. I then asked about the police department patches on the wall. I was given no explanation, not even a good story to tell my yelpers. The other bartender answered, "those are the places we got arrested in" and that was the end of the story. He went back to his conversation at the other end of the bar. That was my que to ask for the check and leave. A bar with no personality is not for me. Should of went to Dicks Last Resort. Still left a 18 percent tip. I know it won't buy class or customer service, but can't put a price on my piece of mind.

Yelp
TLDR: homely little bar Two floors each with its own bar. Not much space but the people are nice. Heard some live music on floor 2 with one guy singing and playing acoustic guitar. Very divey and a place you go to talk and hang with friends over some drinks. Love it.

Preston H.

Yelp
Really cool place, downstairs is more a party vibe but upstairs is a chill vibe Oka

Kevin S.

Yelp
Do NOT go to this place. The bartender came over, unsolicited and plugged our phone into his and said he wanted to give us a charge. Ever since, we've been getting been getting charged for purchases through apps on the phone, weird texts from businesses we didn't contact and the phone is slow. When I called the place to discuss with the owner, another bartended answered. I started to explain what happened and the person hung up immediately without even hearing me out. They are scammers.

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Most fun I had in Boston and I had a shit ton of fun while I was in town! The bartender and patrons were all good vibes (and holy shit my friend was a handful and they were unbothered). The old school country music was unexpected but awesome.
google avatar

Yelp
It's a great Irish dive bar that I visited on my trip to Boston. The place wasn't crowded initially but once the Bruins game ended, the place was packed. The bartender was really friendly and helpful. I got the old fashioned and it was perfectly made. My friend tried one of the beers, you can't go wrong with that. It was recommended by the bartender and was a great suggestion. The prices of the drinks were pretty reasonable. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a place to hang out and have a great night.

Yelp
Ok look, I could get flashy with wordplay and leave you bedazzled with a salacious savvy for an alluring lexicon. But I won't. Nick at Durty Nelly's poured me $6 vodkas and fried up a pound of whatever was on hand, the $10 culinary delight they call the Boom Boom Combo. Two kinds of chicken and mozzarella cheese sticks on a bed of fries with five sauces. The Boom Boom obviously referring to what you make in your pants after devouring 10,000 calories in ten buzzed minutes. Reed "Damien calls me Dean" Waddle cranked the jams in the Jack Johnson/Iron & Wine stylings only a Tuesday night solo dive bar musician could. He also played 311 on request, which gave me a musical chub. My dirty little secret. Good luck finding it, unless you're after half a goat from the Halal market next door. Oh, and they open at 9am during the week. For breakfast. -baffled-

Yelp
Honestly just wanted a shot and this place delivered. 10/10 super friendly people and other customers. So glad we found this place.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped here before going to an improv show later that evening. We were looking for a little bit of a dive to kill some time at and get a drink. This place turned out to work just fine for our needs and wasn't too expensive. We just ordered the special that night which included a shot and a beer for $10. It was a bit noisy and crowded inside but that is too be expected on a Friday night. The crowd inside looked a little rough and two people sitting next to us at the bar (who didn't know each other prior to coming out) were getting touchy enough that the bartender asked them to leave. Other than the inside being a little dirty and loud, the bar was not a bad stop. Rather than paying an arm and a leg for a drink on a Friday night, this seems like it could be a cheaper option if you don't mind the crowd. The bartender was entertaining and the atmosphere was rather interesting.

Yelp
This is an institution at the North End. Full of both tourists and locals. Still have ended up here more than I'd ever like to admit feeling good and then ending up with headache the next morning. Great service, strong drinks, and always interesting conversation. I'd recommend getting some good Italian food in your belly before hitting this bar. Your head will thank you for this later. Always have a fun time in this bar.....not to miss for locals or tourists.

Yelp
Stopped here with Jonathan on the Freedom Trail. Its a small old bar in a great location. How much can i write about a bar? I had a Sam Adam's Boston Larger and Jonathan had a Harpoon Boston IPA.

Megha J.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting Boston and had our Real ID's immediately turned down by the bartender. We are both 23 years old and this could have been easily verified, but the bartender was rude and refused to check to be sure. Incredibly disappointed by our experience.
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
This was a great little hole in the wall, the playlist was on point, bar tender was singing rocket man along with the entire bar. This place looks and feels like Boston through and through. Bunch of beers on tap, I had a few Del's Shandys and some massive shots of tequila.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
I came in at a dead time, just me and one other guy. I had a magners and enjoyed the old school music playing on Spotify while the bartender handled a bit of business. He wasn't overly chatty but I had no expectations and he wasn't at all rude. I asked about the patches and he said it was just kind of a thing that started, people bringing them in when they came from vacations. He said they never set out to be a patch bar, but now they are. So I guess this is a thing? I've never seen it before but it was cool to see how far some of the patches were from.

Yelp
Favorite dive bar in Boston. Not your typical high end bar, expext a bar full of Patriots and Red Sox memorabilia, lots of Sam Adams and delicious cocktails along with good conversation. This spot is located in downtown Boston next to little Italy. A must visit for out of towners!

Kate K.

Yelp
Dirty tap lines, beer tastes awful. Rude bartender as well. There was a dog that came in and that was nice though. Was just a little disappointed

Zod C.

Yelp
If I could give this place a negative 5 I would. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemies. We came in to order some drinks, waited politely at the bar to get serviced, but were told to leave because they "had no space" (there was an empty table in the corner). Then he (possibly doorman) followed/stalked us to start an argument/fight while we were leaving. That is the last time I will ever step foot in this place. The standards of customer service of this embarrassment of a bar are just laughable. I can't even imagine how disgusting their kitchen must be if the staff are allowed to interact with customers in that way. Incidences like these raise red flags for any bar/restaurant for potential health code violations, and 9 times out of 10 you won't be surprised. It's very common that if the front of the house is poorly run, back of the house will be as well. It signals that either the owner is clueless, or just gave up. If you ask me, this joke of a bar is due for a random inspection. Keep in mind that their bathroom is tiny and filthy. Do not waste your money here until they get their act together.
google avatar

Evan K.

Yelp
Try the Shiner Holiday beer.. delicious and not overly Christmas Spicey like the others.. (not sure that that is the best explanation but you get it) other than that this place was about as expected during the day. Cozy, somewhat old school, yet decorated in Xmas decorations. I'm sure they were quiet due to the construction going on
google avatar

Matthew F.

Yelp
Greatest bar on earth, next to the original in Ireland. I miss my friends. To the folks from out of town-who gave it less than five stars, you're doing it wrong.
google avatar

Frederick N.

Yelp
Had a great time in the A/C upstairs portion during the Bernie 2016 Meeting. They took great care of us and the bar tender was hella cool. Nicholas took care of us all! Super fun, friendly atmosphere with an old world feel. Enjoyed the Whiskey talk! Will definitely return to meet back up with the amazing staff and clientele. Worth visiting in the Haymarket area for a quick drink or hanging till last call.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
The bartender here was one of the gruffest individuals I've ever encountered working behind a bar. I felt like maybe if I had "Semper Fi" tattooed up and down both arms I would have received friendlier service, but I don't, and so I didn't. This was definitely a man of few words. I was the only person in the place until another couple came in and sat at the end of the bar. The woman ordered a Guinness, and then had the gall to ask the bartender if he could draw a clover in the foam. Based on his reaction, you would've thought she asked him if he was wearing ladies panties. They do have a pretty good selection of local-ish craft beers here, which was nice. Tip: they only take cash here.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
This was a pretty cool spot. I wish I had more time to kill here, but I basically bought a rushed beer and was in and out. Bartender was friendly, and accommodating in my travels to use the rest room so decided to grab a pint. Being from New York, I'm used to it - but the prices on beer seemed a bit steep. Definitely not somewhere I'd spend hours at, but a nice friendly pub.
google avatar

Ruben N.

Yelp
Unfriendly bartender. Tried to converse and ask about the area. He said we would like the cook better. He never shuts up. Rude and truly a below average experience. Don't come here. Many other bars around here. Stay away. I repeat. Stay away.
google avatar

Jeremy N.

Yelp
Yet another great dive bar in downtown Boston! With a heavy Irish theme here (music, drinks, etc.), it's quite a place to go to if you are in the mood for a conversation setting. For the duration that my group was here, the bartender was incredibly friendly as well as the customers that were in the bar. Everyone wanted to talk and share a few stories. I would definitely return to this bar next time I am in town!
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Wow, we were coming from NY and we walk far to get tot his bar, to then end up getting kicked out because my friends told him he should learn his math before he turns her around for being under age and being in 1992, he was so embarrassed and kick us out.
google avatar

Quandra T.

Yelp
Randomly searched for a bar to hit up while in Boston, and Yelp never fails! This place is super accessible by Fanueil Hall and me and my crew immediately walked into good vibes. One of the patrons, a young girl, indicated that she was drinking a fruity, undistilled cider and we should all try it and the bartender was nice enough to offer me a sample before I ordered one! I usually dislike cider but this one was on point. Bartender Nick is AWESOME. Nick, as we found out after an elaborate name guessing game which we all lost. A personable bartender is like half of a good bar experience. His claim to fame was Long Islands, which I declined, but he did make me a mean Jolly Rancher and Hurricane and was friendly and sociable. Drinks were $6-7 apiece; a bargain by NY standards. I was amazed by how friendly all the patrons were! Conversation with strangers was seamless. There is also an upstairs part of the bar where I miserably failed at the dart-board. What was the bathroom like? I used it at least 4 times, and...I dunno. It was a bathroom. It had a toilet. And I was buzzed. The back-alley behind the bar is also sweet to hang out in. I would most definitely come back here again when I'm back in Boston. :D Only thing that could make this better was if they had a kitchen? I don't remember food being an option.
