12 Best St. Patrick’s Day Destinations in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Cozy up to Irish stew and a glass of whiskey by the real fireplace while the Sunset District weather — typically cold and foggy — provides the believably Irish atmosphere outdoors. Durty Nelly’s also qualifies as a dive bar/sports bar, with requisite trivia nights and karaoke." - Paolo Bicchieri

After the dead and co shows every night we went to this pub. We had so much fun. Danced to the best montage of music I may have ever heard at a bar. Place was packed but service was stellar. The female bartender from Ireland was so nice and so cool. I cant remember your name but if you see this I want to tell you how awesome you are! We will be back here every time I come to San Fran! Thanks a million for the awesome fun memories. Long live the Nellie! ❤️❤️❤️❤️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️🤙🏻🤙🏻💪💪💪

Pretty empty at 10pm on a Tuesday but more groups came later. Did didn't take a long time. Fried mushrooms were so juicy and delicious. The Mac and cheese is penne pasta and that tastes great too. The burgers and sandwiches are really big and well made, and come with a ton of fries. Overall great stuff. Definitely could come back to eat more food. Thanks!

Incredible food! And awesome service! We had hamburgers and they were the best hamburgers we had in a very long time. Great atmosphere, very cozy place. Super fast service.

Though 3 miles from my apartment, I consider Durty Nelly's to be my neighborhood bar. Irishman Odhran has owned and run the the pub for many years and has kept all the original charm of the place. It's a friendly hangout. Come on a Wednesday for Trivia Night. Come back on Thursday for Karaoke. You may hear Odhran himself sing - what a treat. The man can sing! BTW, there is plenty of parking out in the avenues.

Google
Durty Nelly's makes a solid burger, and it came with a ton of fries. All for $11 (The Classic). Next time I'm gonna get the fish and chips. If you try them out, be sure to leave a tip even for pick-up. They still have to pack up your order, and they give you a lot of napkins. Edit: Tried the chicken pot pie. Very savory. The crust was incredibly flaky and light. I don't think it's an everyday item though. Also, keep in mind that prices are always subject to change. 3/17/21 edit: Had the corned beef special and it was great!

Google
Great neighborhood bar with friendly bartender/mixologist who made us a very nice Long Island Ice Tea on a hot Sunday afternoon. Definitely a great place to grab a pint of draft beer and some pub-grub !

Best Irish Bar in San Francisco !!!!! Great staff and the owner is world class. Great atmosphere, food and people ...

Google
While out exploring San Francisco we found ourselves thirty and looking for a fun spot to grab a drink and Durty Nelly’s was near by. What a great spot to grab a drink. Loaded with character and friendly staff. The bartender mixed a delicious drink with a great selection of Irish Whiskeys. I was grateful they had some tequila. They have set up a patio and not sure if this is temporary or if they have plan to keep it. We were there on a pretty cold day and they had the fire going which was very nice to enjoy.

Yelp
Durty Nelly's is a fantastic Irish pub near Golden Gate Park. Lots of games on the telly, a solid beer selection, and a menu full of bar fare. The curry chicken chips were great, and the portions are huge.
google avatar

Ingrid P.

Yelp
Food is not to bad for a Irish pub. Chill and great decor. I think they should have more of a alcohol selection, but then again it's hard for me to even choose a drink let alone an Irish one lol.

Yelp
HAHAHAHH funny hahah I decided to eat a fish and slaw filet sandwich fried fish cod fish and it was good and had fries...coke..that was my new visit today on Irving..it's been here a while and Raleigh the English Bulldog appeared and made a new friend hahahaha

Yelp
Quick dinner and drinks with my husband since we were in the Outer Sunset neighborhood, we decided to try their Fish & Chips and Classic Burger with fries and draft beer. Food was alright, nothing too out of the ordinary. I like the fish & chips from another pub better as the batter on this one is a bit soggy. The bartender was nice. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Still the best bar this side of the the park (and let's be honest, the whole City). Always nice when Outside Lands or Hardly Strictly happens (apart from it being a liiiiiittle more difficult to find parking) because you get to live vicariously through all the first timers who are in disbelief as to how they never knew this place existed. Fabulous drinks and prices. Even more fabulous food (best fish and chips south of the north coast of California, pro tip: get curry on the side; lamb burger is off the charts; top notch wings; amazing bangers and mash). post-COVID UPDATE: Happy Hour is back (although we all know that EVERY hour at Durty Nelly's is a happy one) Wednesday trivia makes you miss the way trivia USED to be in this town. Karaoke nights are a blast as well (so long as Odhran isn't singing and making us all look like fools with his sexy dulcet Irish vocals).
google avatar

Annie S.

Yelp
Trivia nights on Wednesdays!! Cozy place, friendly staff, Guinness on tap, and a fireplace in the back. What's not to like?

Jordan M.

Yelp
Top tier craic. Karaoke on a Thursday is one of the best nights in town. Not to mention the best Guinness in town.

David M.

Yelp
As authentic an Irish pub experience as you'll get in the city. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, perfect pints of Guinness. Food is pretty decent pub fare as well. The real fireplace is great for those SF days on this side of town when we're socked in with fog. As others have mentioned, have come by with my dog in tow and was welcomed in.

Yelp
I just stopped at Durty Nellys for a quick drink while waiting for a dinner reservation nearby. I thought it had a cozier vibe than other sports bars/pubs I've been to. They had good beer options, and food options which is a plus!

Yelp
Great little neighborhood Irish bar. When the amazing Asian food offerings Irving Street offers doesn't cut it-- and you want some good ole pub fare, this is your place. The drinks are fairly priced, the bartender is a riot, and the food is excellent. You definitely get the neighborhood vibe here-- which is a refreshing change of pace from many of the bars in the city. In terms of food-- you can't go wrong with the Nellys Burger and soup of the day.

Yelp
This the first time there. Went we sat down we're the condiments like ketchup, vinegar. salt and pepper you see Fruit fry on there! More them five! There was mouse poop we're we sat down. There was no toilet paper in the bathroom. Order a drink and got seven up with cherrys.,no grenadine. The place is dirty

Gary P.

Yelp
Just a great friendly Irish bar with good food and lovely people. The guiness is excellent

Yelp
Good vibe and great place to watch a game. Food is good and service is great too. Nice local pub in the sunset.

Yelp
Good Dj , good song choices. But the rest of the people there are crazy! This bar is trouble and there's hardly any people there.

Yelp
Charming & friendly. Twas the 1st bar my hubby & I stepped into. The bartender was just super nice. We'll be back.

Yelp
We went in and the waitress was so nice and accommodating! We sat through trivia night which was not suited for millennials or Gen z people for sure (born 1994) the food was good but the best for us was the bangers and mash. We had some potatoe balls but they were way too soft like mashed potatoes, might as well get the bangers and mash! Overall they gave us a great Irish pub vibe like I was on Ireland once again! 4/5 stars because it was so damn expensive for a small bar!

Yelp
Durty Nelly's is the quintessential Irish Bar - Irish flag flying, a Dublin timezone, fish and chips, potato and leak soup, Guiness on draft, drunk Irishman at the bar. I wanted to go for a walk at GGP but also grab a drink with a date before hand. Doing the research on the area, Durty Nelly's was suggested and glad it was. This building stands out with it's bright paint job alongside it's far more generic Chinese neighbors. When we arrived we sat at one of the four booths and the bartender, a nice Irish woman, came over to check our vaccination status before asking us what we wanted. While the menu looked (and the food smelled) amazing, we decided to stick with just a couple of Strongbow ciders. Throughout, there was a regular, an Irishman who was VERY inebriated, who was making playful conversations with everyone. Not belligerent at all, but clearly intoxicated, and I felt he added to the ambiance until the bartender playfully pushed him out. If I lived nearby, I would be here frequently for a lot of reasons, and now can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Nice friendly bar with good Guinness (3/5 green stars) Quick review today: Durty Nelly's has perhaps one of the most welcoming storefronts (Barfronts? Facades?) that I've ever seen. Bright yellow and blue with window boxes and a red door. Sounds a bit garish but it works. We had Guinness and a few local beers (Anchor, I think, and an IPA), some garlic fries and a cheese toasty with more fries (!). Friendly barman and good atmosphere (although too many TV screens for my liking). I'm also giving them 3/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * My main problem was that, while Guinness was served in a proper glass, the Anchor and IPA were served in plastic cups (with Bud Light logo). WHY?? Update from owner, Odie: it turns out that they only use plastic on their two busiest weekends (Hardly Strictly and Outside Lands). * The barman was helpful in explaining that the curry sauce was not vegetarian, so we ended up with the cheese toasty and fries, being almost the only veggie things on the menu. There's plenty of vegetarian food in Ireland these days, so why not serve more in an Irish bar? There's no shortage of vegetarians and vegans in SF.

Yelp
Great little mom&pop pub. Cozy fireplace, belly warming comfort food, and affordable drinks. 4 tvs with sports and jukebox. We hit this place up before going to GG Park once a week!

Frederick A.

Yelp
Chicken wings served with rotten, spoiled meat. A roaring five pieces. No Smithwick. WTF?

Captain C.

Yelp
$8.69 for a pint of Guiness in the Outer sunset is ridiculous and its only an average pint...Ill stick with The Shannon Arms were their only $6 and way more creamy, tastier and cold...

Yelp
Really cool pub, bartender was very nice and good service. Unfortunately we missed the kitchen hours because the food looks really good. We'll be back earlier for another drink and some food. Kitchen closes at 9:00 FYI

Yelp
Amazing bartenders - be nice and tip them! There's a lot of demand. People are super friendly. Love the vibes and karaoke thursdays!! KJ kendo is amazing- his karaoke is the main reason I come here.

Yelp
I LOVE Durty Nelly's, especially the Fish & Chips, with malt vinegar and salt only. But you get so FEW chips because of the tartar sauce, ewww, and slaw metal containers served on the plate, precious chip space. Really it looks so sad, like spuds are expensive? Please sir can I have some more? Not enough fries, SERIOUSLY. Should be a bed of chips under each piece of fish. Also, I got a nice black hair at the bottom of my plate recently. Need a break before I can eat there again. Please try to add more chips to the fish & chips. And keep that lovely thick black wavy hair outta of my food! Had to take two stars away because of cheap chip serving on this one dish and the hair. Looking forward to going back in a few weeks or months.

Yelp
Time: 10:06pm Place: Durty Nelly's Date: 12/31/17 This review is LIVE Unlike the Durty Nelly's one would see on a regular day, the Irish bar right now is raging. Instead of old timers playing bar side GM for the Giants, young handsome men in dressy button downs are drunkenly singing along to Mr.Brightside. Pretty ladies are slinging bottles with skirts and dresses short enough for the occasion. There are carry over christmas decorations to keep the holiday feelings alive, and for tonight only, a party of balloons are bobbing joyfully on the ceiling. The alcohol pours graciously from the bar. Big shoutout to the two warriors working behind the counter. Unperturbed from the volume of work and the task of working NYE, their smiles and patience keeps the walkway of Durty Nelly's a makeshift dance floor for the inspired and the spirited. It's 10:16pm and group selfies are evident as brief flashes are scattered here and there. Hugs and shaky hands, sips and mouth-to-ear whispers, outside pizza and outdoor smokes. No one seems to understand each other, but it's an understanding fit for tonight. The ups and downs of 2017 are forgotten in this one last hurrah. It's a heartfelt way to ring in 2018. Foggy memories and a slight hangover are all anyone will take with them. From one degenerate to another, few experiences are more beautiful. It's 10:25, and i'm going to call it a year for Yelp. Thank you for reading and Happy New Years!

Yelp
This spot is open for outdoor dining and takeout. Staff are wearing masks. Quick and friendly service. Yum! The chicken bites with garlic sauce were so tasty! We also got the fish & chips and cottage pie. Perfect comfort food for a foggy night!

Yelp
I'm giving Durty Nelly's five stars because it's our new (to us, since we just moved) neighborhood spot and has something for everyone in the family (specifically beer and veggie burgers for my husband, cheeseburgers and french fries for my son, and fish and chips for me). Yay! On my last visit with my son (which happened to fall on Super Bowl Sunday, which I had forgotten about...!) it was understandably loud and boisterous, still I felt comfortable with my seven-year-old sidekick and we enjoyed our intimate meal in the corner. It was perfect! Adam enjoyed his specially made for him lemonade -- thanks a bunch.

Yelp
Trivia night on Wednesdays are a ton of fun! Durty Nelly's is the craic The bar staff is great and the kitchen makes a good chips & curry.

Yelp
I've been to this place a few times in the past month or so and though everyone tells me all of the food is great, the burger is so excellent I can't seem to get myself to order anything else. And the fries are fantastic too. I like burgers but it's not always the first thing I'll orde. However, this place has become one of my two or three "go-to" burger joints in San Francisco or even Daly City. The burger is amazingly flavorful with a good charcoal grilled, beefy flavor. And the fries, holy smoke! They serve thick-cut fries. While I much prefer shoestring fries (because they're crispier), these seem to be are cooked a little longer so they're crispier and less mealy or mushy. Very, very good. I guess I can't vouch for the other food items because I can't get past the burger and fries, but they're delicious. The bartenders can be inconsistent. A couple of them are friendly and attentive but one can be inattentive. There are a number of regulars who come here and they've all been very friendly and willing to engage (if you want) or will leave you alone if you aren't interested in talking. The beer selection isn't huge and the alcohol prices are a little higher than other places around, but unless you're poor or cheap, that's a minor inconvenience. This is a really, really a good place.

Yelp
In the sea of Asian shops and restaurants on Irving lies Durty Nelly's! I've only been here once by the recommendation of someone else, and it was definitely an awesome and laid back experience. What I liked: -Odie is super nice! -A pretty authentic experience I would say(have zero experience with Irish bars) -The paint job outside. I mean c'mon... -Irish coffee! $9 but good to try!
google avatar

Azucena M.

Yelp
Food was decent, but it took forever to get the bartenders attention despite the bar not being super full. We were happier with the bartender that took over after him. Might try them again if I get the chance. May I also add the way they washed their cups. I'm pretty sure cups need to be washed in very hot water, but the bartender only gave them a quick wash and rinse without gloves which made me believe the water wasn't as hot as it should be to clean them correctly. I've worked in the food industry and this concerns me for health reason.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a necessary dive bar in a mostly Asian commercial Neighborhood. Chess event food in a cozy intimate environment close to beach, so the fireplace helps at night as that breeze blows. If you're in the area, it's perfect - but I wouldn't make it a destination. Service OK.

Yelp
I pick Brendan on my team for whatever...drinking, fighting, even dodge ball...he's one of those cool guys that just gets along with everyone. When I walked in, I felt like I was transplanted to Farrington's Pub in the Temple Bar district of Dublin. I heard lots of "Slainte" and "What's the craic" being tossed around, and that's how I knew it was a traditional Irish pub. Irish music also plays at night, adding to the atmosphere of old Dublin. I hear the burgers are not to be missed, and I'll be hitting that up on my next trip, along with a dozen pints of the black stuff. Irish Pub in the middle of Irving's Chinatown...yeah, it fits, and if you have a problem with it, bring it up to Brendan.
google avatar

Riley D.

Yelp
Great Irish pub in the sunset! The food is consistently great and the beer is always cold! What more could you ask for?
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Needed a place to catch up with a buddy, we decided to skip the typical boba thing that is prevalent on Irving in favor of a cold beer. Knowing of only one place in the area, I walked over to meet my friend in front of Durty Nelly's, a staple dive in the Sunset. I got my regular, a snakebite, which didn't seem that common or popular in this bar as the bartender had to confirm with me that I wanted the Guinness and cider version. I know some like it made with different brews, but this version is definitely my favorite. Luckily they had some cider available and I could kick back with my favorite cold one and do some catching up and talk shop. The bartender was super friendly and it's a fun place to hang out and enjoy a beer during downtimes, but not the quietest place once things pick up. Prices are reasonable though there are certainly better deals. It's a welcoming place at most hours so I'd definitely recommend it for a good time. Stop by for a pint! Food: 7/10 Service: 8/10 Price: $ Atmosphere: 7/10
google avatar

Glenn T.

Yelp
Drink pricing is arbitray. Coors light was $4.00 one night and $5.00 the next. A shot of Jamison was $6.50 then $7.50. If you're tipping the prices shouldn't be changing from night to night.

Yelp
The lady behind the bar was quite rude and made us feel unwelcome. She was obviously upset about something else and taking it out on customers, unless that's just the way she always is. Horrible! *In their response to this review they are trying to say that I was mad that I got carded. Nothing like this ever happened. I'm in my thirties, I'm used to getting carded and I've never made a big deal about it. So I don't know where that comes from, unless they are mistaking me for someone else. The reality is that the lady behind the counter was just plain rude and it came out of the blue, and it had nothing to do with getting carded or anything like that. But it shows the attitude, doesn't it? Rather than apologize and offer to make amends, they accuse me of something that never happened. All the more reason not to go back. **Now the owner won't stop sending harassing messages and calling me names. Boy was it a mistake going in there! I'm surprised they're still in business with that kind of piss-poor customer service.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
When friends asked me to meet them here for brunch, I was all :-\. In all my prior experiences, the food and service were... not good. Despite its proximity, I just didn't bother visiting. When I got there, I was stunned. The menu looked great. The food was great. The service was great. Someone had transformed the place! The owners have created an oasis of comfort food and booze. Very tasty, homemade everything, very good value. They work very hard and care about their customers. Good music and local sports on the tube are a bonus. Durty Nelly's is a gem of a neighborhood bar. So glad they're nearby!

Yelp
Pub food was something my friend couldn't stop talking about so I decided to go with him to an Irish pub since he kept hyping about their fried food! ATMOSPHERE: The pub had a very pub feel to it. We decided to sit on the bar. The place was dimly lit which kind of bothered me at first but got used to it. There were some tables and some booths. What I liked was that there was a fireplace and they lit it during our stay. FOOD: We ordered the curry fries and the durty balls. Durty balls: 4/5 - I thought these were amazing! It's mashed potatoes in a shape of a ball and deep fried. What made it taste better was the sauce that it came with. I failed to identify it, but it had a bit of a spicy taste. Curry fries: 5/5 - Their fries were amazing! With and without the curry. It had so much flavor I highly recommend getting this! I also ordered a Guinness, which was very smooth. It was a bit bitter, but smooth. As someone who prefer sweet drinks, this was totally manageable. It got worse towards the end though so I stopped drinking it. CUSTOMER SERVICE: The service here was average. I was going to rate this place a 3 but the food definitely compensated for it. The guy in the bar just didn't seem like he liked his job and he seemed annoyed that we kept asking for things which totally brought the vibe down. Would I come back here? YAAAS! Would I recommend this to a friend? YAAAS!

Yelp
A nice, neighborhood pub ... some might refer to it as an Irish Pub but the clientele was pretty diverse when I was there. My friend from out of state, an unofficial judge of hamburgers, told my group that theirs was "one of the three best burgers" he's had in the U.S. and he's been around. Ours was an afternoon visit. The food and drinks were all good and the service was very friendly and helpful. I plan to return.
google avatar

Yelp
Interesting and friendly place. But watch what you order, it adds up quick. A couple burgers and beers will set you back about $40, which might be a surprise. Lamb burger was very tasty, as was the regular cheeseburger with bacon. But the outstanding thing here is their fries- just amazing. Hand cut and cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Caitlin N.

Yelp
This place is a true neighborhood gem. Food is great. Beer selection is good. Booths are cozy. It's our favorite place to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a pretty good experience... Aside from the obnoxious 40 something year olds who were congregated by the bar smh. They wanted to be sooooooooo cool so they made sure everyone knew they were there. They were slamming cups and hollering and cursing up a storm -__- The owner/Bartender was nice. He made sure my husband was happy with the tv that was facing us. He played his music loud and sang even louder lol!! The food was delicious. We ordered curry fries as an appetizer. I got the Golden Gate burger and Hubby got the Bacon BBQ burger.. patties were moist and flavorful. The fries were perfect and crispy!! If my husband were writing this review he'd probably give more stars but I wasn't digging being there. (It was Hubby's restaurant pick)

Yelp
"Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name." Especially if your name begins with Amanda. Thanks to Manda B. for introducing this place to the SBC. Our experience was first-rate.... thanks to Brandon. Cherry bombs were exploding (in a fun way) and the curry fries were rockin. I tasted their steak burger also and it looks, I mean tastes like I'm going to have to come back for more! The few times we stepped foot in this cheery bar, I noticed how cozy yet rowdy this place can be. I think we took it to another level when the SBC, EB, and SF collided here just recently. Awesome staff, smooth drinks, good food, and great atmosphere would facilitate my return. Too bad it's a little too far for me to visit more often.

Yelp
It's refreshing to walk into a bar and automatically want to cozy up in their welcoming booth seating, situated right by their charming fire place (which was unlit at the time). Durty Nelly's is a real pub - bursting with character and hospitality. There are no loud garish TVs mounted on the wall here. The place has a rustic feel about it and is decorated accordingly. The place isn't dim or dismal - and instead the lighting is warm and refreshing. The bartender is genuine and personable. You can actually hear yourself speak and while we were too late to try their food menu - their curry chips are lauded as a winning dish. Not too late in the evening - a beaming bachelorette party stumbled in and even offered up slightly obscene cupcakes to us and the bar staff. One of those rare moments - where women by far - out-number men at a Sunset pub. I was on a quest to discover a bar/pub in the area that truly resonated with me - and Durty Nelly's was the true standout. Intimate and unassuming. Pure delight for a mellow Sunday evening. Trust.

Yelp
Craving a burger lunch in a cozy pub, we made our way to Durty Nelly's. Upon entering, we were greeted with a friendly hello by the bartender. She was welcoming and helpful and handed us a couple of menus letting us know that she could come around to us if we wanted to have a seat at one of the booths, or we could order at the bar. We opted to save her the trouble of walking around to us and ordered directly - a couple Guinnesses, a burger and a grilled BBQ chicken sandwich (requested without the bun). I was impressed there were *five* TV's - three were above the bar, one above the back of the pub, and one above the front area - I figure they're gearing up for the Big Game tomorrow. Our food came out in good time - the burger tasted fresh and delicious and came with a decent amount of fries. My grilled BBQ chicken sandwich also came with fries and was crisp, tender and lovely. Good sauce. This pub has a convivial, locals vibe where folks of a broad range of ages (over 21) mix and mingle. When we arrived in the early afternoon, there were a small handful of patrons and a nice crowd gathered shortly after. Durty Nellys - a pub with good food, drinks and merriment!
