10 Best Places for Brunch in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"Breakfast and lunch are all you’ll get at Dutch's, but frankly they’re so good, you won’t want anything else anyway. The fluffy buttermilk biscuits alone are the obsession of many a Portlander, not to mention all the other comfort food, from homemade croissants and pretzel bagels topped with tobiko and smoked salmon to fried confit chicken with bacon, cheddar, romaine, and red-pepper jelly on homemade brioche buns. Owners Lucy and Ian Dutch make nearly everything from scratch, including the hash browns, which justifiably have their own local cult." - Alexandra Hall

Google
Great breakfast spot. It’s unfussy with very friendly counter service. The sandwiches are filling and stick with you all day. The blueberry muffins are “that good” and worth trying. I can’t upload a photo because they never last long enough for me to get a pic.

Google
The matcha macadamia donut was sooo good, hashbrowns in the Portland breakfast too! It’s a bit pricey here, so highly recommend Portland breakfast for the best value. My friend thought her breakfast burrito was a bit bland.

Google
I love coming here. The lady at the counter is amazing, they have square hashbrowns which are delicious, and their breakfast plates and sandwiches are amazing as well. I came here after I saw Maine Public do a series on breakfast sandwiches and I was not disappointed. Personally I love a nice, plain, egg and cheese on an english muffin and every element is fantastic. Their english muffins are to die for.

We ended up at Dutch's the other day for brunch because our other brunch place didn't work out. When I picked it on a map, I didn't realize it was counter service. Counter service is ok, but not always my favorite- personal preference. Waiting on line have me plenty of time to stare at the cinnamon roll though so I had to get one for the table. It was pretty good. I had the ham and cheese delux. It ended up being pretty greasy, but the flavor was decent. My sister said her blueberry pancakes were good. She had a side of the crispy hashbrowns, but they were like little cubes of hasbrowns, more like a tater tot. I'd go back, but I'd have something different. Only remembered to take a pic of the cinnamon roll.

Pumpkin French toast sticks! Another great breakfast at Dutch's! Be prepared to wait in line to order. It'll give you plenty of time to read the menu on the wall and change your mind several times. :) My favorite are the biscuits. They are split and grilled on one side. Perfect to add more butter or jelly. I ordered an extra biscuit this time to feed-the-need. The food flavors are great and you'll leave satisfied.

We had a great brunch here on Sunday. Excellent food, large portions and friendly and prompt counter service. My favorite was the thick slices of homemade sourdough toast with blueberry preserves! I would definitely go back when I’m in Portland again.

Google
I recently had the pleasure of enjoying breakfast at this wonderful restaurant, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. I ordered the Spicy Chicken Biscuit, and it was absolutely amazing. The biscuit was perfectly flaky, and the chicken had just the right amount of spice, making it a delightful combination. My husband opted for Dutch's Cinnamon Roll, which I couldn’t resist trying. It was fresh out of the oven, with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and just the right amount of cinnamon and sweetness. It truly had that homemade, freshly baked flavor that’s hard to come by. Our kids ordered pancakes with eggs, and they devoured their meals in no time, which speaks volumes about how much they enjoyed it. The pancakes were fluffy, and the eggs were cooked to perfection—a definite win for the whole family. The staff was exceptionally friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall positive atmosphere of the place. Their attentiveness and warm service made our visit even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for a place that serves delicious breakfast with a cozy, inviting vibe, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
We LOVE Dutch’s. We eat here every Saturday morning and have not had 1 bad experience. Their bread is made in house and during the summer they bring in fresh produce from around the local area. Their blueberry jam is amazing I get it every time to put on my bagel. Their pastries are also made in house. The blueberry muffin is a staple and they feature 2 donuts every weekend that rotate flavors. I have not had the same donut twice since July. It does get pretty hot in the summer time in there but a lot of places around Portland don’t have A/C. We will be moving soon and we’ll definitely miss this place! Definitely try this place. Also, if you come at 10 or after be prepared for a line out the door. It can sometimes take up to a half hour to get to the front counter where you place your order. Enjoy! Recommend: Crispy hash browns, grilled banana bread with butterscotch sauce!, and any of the pastries but especially the blueberry muffin.

Yelp
Wow. Dutch's is a GEM!! We came here for an early lunch with the kiddos and we're not disappointed. The prices were adorable and the portions were generous. Staff was nice and made some kid friendly options for us. We asked for some chicken from the bang bang chicken sandwich kept on the side so our toddler could eat as "nuggets". We also ordered mac n cheese (5 stars) and butternut squash soup. Every single item we ordered was phenomenal. The butternut squash soup was $8 and came with two giant crusty pieces of bread. The soup was SO good. In one bite, you got notes of nuttiness, spice from the chili flakes maybe, sweetness- simply umami. You have to order the soup. The bang bang chicken sandwich was delicious as well. I was a fan of the broccoli salad on the sandwich. Compliments to the chef- chef's kiss and 5 stars. My ONLY gripe was there were only 2 high chairs in the entire restaurant. Cmon guys...that's not enough. You know it, get more high chair. For the kids!!!

Yelp
Had the pancakes, as well as the banana bread while we were in the restaurant, and it was good but nothing to write home about. With that being said, the cinnamon roll was absolutely a top 5 cinnamon roll that I've ever had. It was very fluffy and had a delicious cream cheese icing.

Yelp
We visit Portland every year around this time to celebrate my wife's birthday for the weekend. We were craving a tuna melt on Saturday around lunchtime and I just googled "tuna melt near me" . Dutch's came up and it was nearby, so we stopped in. Wow, did we strike it big! We ordered a tuna melt, curly fries and their butternut squash soup to share. First off, the tuna melt is the stuff of legends. It's served on thick seemingly homemade crusty bread, and then the perfect amount of tuna, cheese and lettuce. Maybe two types of cheese (I'm working off memory). It was a large sandwich and perfect for sharing. The butternut squash soup was also incredible, so smooth with incredible flavor and mouth feel. It's not your everyday butternut squash recipe. There's definitely some Indian spices in there; that give it a slight curry taste. We LOVED it. Along with the soup you get another big crusty piece of bread for dipping. Hot damn! This place is fun and simple. It's counter service (though they'll come find you when your food is ready) with large comfortable booths to hang out in. Don't miss it!

Yelp
Came in for brunch on Saturday, 10/26/24 around 11am. The line was fairly long and it's my understanding that it usually moves quickly. Not the case this morning. The 2 women working the register were working hard, but my guess is they were understaffed. With all that said the woman that took our order at the counter was friendly and patient while I had to make a new choice because they were out of cheese grits. I was so bummed! I had a Bloody Mary and my friend had the Antioxidant Screwdriver. Both were served in a good sized plastic cup with a lot of ice - which I really appreciated. Who wants a tepid cocktail!? Both drinks were delightful. Much to my surprise and delight - I was given a little bowl of cheese grits!! The woman that delivered them to our table said there wasn't enough for an order and they wanted me to have them! So incredibly kind!! To eat my friend had the special that was an everything bagel with chive, cream cheese, heirloom tomato, a green relish of some sort and bacon. It was so good! She kept saying "there are so many flavors popping in my mouth!" Apparently I JUST missed out on the cheese grits so I went with the loaded hash browns with 2 eggs. Ermergerd. Those hash browns were golden puffs of goodness. I don't know how else To explain them. They have to be made in house. It's as if grated potatoes were cooked to perfection, made into 1" squares and fried. They were topped with cheese sauce, bacon and scallions. I ate every single one of them. I also ordered a brioche cinnamon roll that I ate a couple bites of and was too full to finish. But you better believe I had a to-go box and had it for a snack later The decor is so cute and a lovely representation of Maine. The signs look like the Maine Stare Park signs, the bathroom was wallpapered in pages from the gazetteer. It's so cute. If I lived here, this would be a regular spot. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The breakfast in Portland has been immaculate!! spicy chicken biscuit fr just melted in my mouth. The biscuit was crumbly in the best way possible. I WANT IT AGAIN

Yelp
YES. One of those few places that lives up to the hype/expectation. Exceeds it in so many ways. Dutch's is a Portland staple for breakfast and lunch - counter service, quick turn around, bus-your-own-table kinda joint. But they do everything SO well. Some of my favorites: the Breakfast Burrito - MASSIVE, fully loaded, delicious. Chicken Biscuit - heavenly. Perfectly crispy chicken thigh, well seasoned gravy, sweet and crumbly biscuit (add bacon and an egg, thank me later!) Loaded Hash browns - their hashbrowns are these crispy little cubes of deliciousness, and loading them up with cheese sauce and scallions just brings them to another level. Additionally, the pastries here are exceptional. I just had a rhubarb almond danish that knocked my socks off. But the variety changes every day and the reality is that no matter what you choose, you will be a happy camper. Speaking of camping, that's the theme here - the great Maine wilderness. Little gems of decoration make you almost feel like you are urban camping. Yeah parking kinda sucks but it's downtown Portland so that goes with the territory. Staff is super friendly and the food comes out quicker than you would think. Coffee is delicious - cold brew is the way to go for summer. I can't think of a single thing I don't like about Dutch's.

Yelp
Seeing all the reviews, I was excited to try this place, but found it to be underwhelming. The biscuit was decent and the chicken was okay. Was expecting the chicken to be crisper and for it to have more spiced flavoring. I think it is a good spot for a quick bite and if you want something filling, but nothing to go out of your way for.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
I had much bigger expectations for this place given the reviews. For starters it was very dirty. Floors sticky , bathrooms were gross ,tables and floor had food on it. I am not sure if this is the norm but not acceptable. It's also self-serve dining. You order at register and pay , they bring you the food. Not a fan of this but that's my personal feeling. Your utensils , condiments and clean up is on you. I probably can even get past all that if the food was great, but it was ok. Nothing special. It's a thumbs down for me.

Yelp
Yummy and delicious. The hashbrowns are a must. The lady , I believe the owner, was super nice and explained about what's in the blueberry jam. I asked for their breakfast without meat so they substituted it with avocado for free! Yippy. The place was packed on a Sunday morning. Like the vibes.

Yelp
More breakfasts, more pastries, more excellence. Somehow most of my photos from my first review got deleted, so I'm reposting here with an updated review. Everything I said last time I still think, only more, with one improvement and a couple of additions. Great place. Chocolate Croissant: Just tried theirs again after liking it last year but not thinking of it as elite. This time it was elite: warm, crisp, light, flaky, buttery, and melty of chocolate. This time on the same level as the place to the east that specializes in them. Danish: The Danish that wowed me and continues to do so is a regular thing but with a rotating filling: strawberry, grape, and melon have all impressed, but I'm hoping they do the pineapple again. But the star is the buttery, flaky dough with plenty of crunch and plenty of give. Funky Bun: Basically monkey bread, firmer and denser than the other pastries, with a light cinnamon glaze. Fun to pull apart. I prefer the muffins and danish, but your mileage may vary. Bagel: They only offer two kinds, plain and everything, choosing to keep it simple and execute. Solid, especially the everything bagel. Not the best in a town with good bagels, but right there with them. Their veggie deluxe bagel sandwich is a thing of beauty. Blueberry Muffin: Like a mini pie with compote and richly luxurious dough. Still among the best few I've ever had anywhere, if not the absolute best. The dough is another winner: fluffy, often warm, rich, moist, and just the right amount of heaviness. Avocado Toast: Thick, crusty bread that's crisp outside but still has delightful fluffiness within. A jolt in that avocado, plus the crunch and nuttiness of the seeds and spices. So good. I like this more than the bagel and I can't imagine a better avocado toast. Add the house made hot sauce to really bring out the flavor. Pancakes: Thick, yet still fluffy and light, with browned flavor too. Real maple syrup. Service: Friendly and quick. Only downside is the order-at-the-counter service model, which means you might have to wait in line again for a coffee refill. Bottom line, Dutch's is the most versatile breakfast joint I know. Some things they're the very best at, and the rest they're very close.

Yelp
Came here for Sunday brunch with friends. Line looks longer than it actually is, moves quickly. I got the chicken biscuit with a side of grits.... if you like grits, do not pass on these!! This has the feel of a diner, but the food is incredible. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Nicholas D.

Yelp
Biscuit and gravy was great. Eggs, toast, and coffee were fine. Potatoes were pretty bland but overall decent breakfast spot.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
I was underwhelmed here. Ordering is done at the counter. Prepare to wait a while in line. I decided to go the breakfast route but I think I missed an opportunity to indulge in their pastries. I'm thinking that's what all the rave is about. For what we ordered, I felt the prices steep and nothing was so good that I want to go back for it again. Out of our three dishes, the Finger Licking Hot Maple was the best. The first few bites were pretty darn good, but the longer it sits, the mushier the bottom biscuit becomes. You've really gotta scoff it down to capitalize. I'll be back again to try the homemade treats. They were all huge and looked scrumptious.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Great breakfast/ brunch spot, friendly service and a great casual spot. Parking can be a challenge during summer, so be ready to walk - though it is a city after all
google avatar

Anne J.

Yelp
Good breakfast!! Tasty food, comfortable ambiance and good coffee. Can't go wrong here.

Yelp
Came to Dutch's bright and early around 8am on a Saturday with a couple friends. A line to the door was formed by the time I ordered my food, a testament to the reputation of Dutch's! I love me a biscuit with gravy type of brekkie, so I got the Crispy Chicken Biscuit. The chicken was topped with a sausage gravy, and I got a side of hashbrowns. The way to order this biscuit was a bit confusing, so be very explicit about what you want (wish Dutch's would change the menu in person on how to interpret it). I got a (average) cup of coffee as well where you can self serve milk/sugar at a table. The biscuit was not what I expected -- square dough and not really fluffy. I also did not expect the hashbrowns to be huge cubes of potato that needed more seasoning. They have hot sauce, but it has pineapple in it, so be aware of that if you don't like fruity hot sauces. All in all, I would try something else if I came back.
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
Delicious!! Had the Veggie bagel (add bacon), grilled banana bread, and biscuits and gravy. Will be back!
google avatar

Kendra W.

Yelp
Plenty of street parking. Meters are free on Saturday. There are a few garages nearby as well. Order at counter. Line moves pretty quick. Lots of seating options. National Park and Maine theme on the inside. Pastries looked amazing. Had the Raspberry French Danish flaky and crispy like a yummy croissant. Loved the ham deluxe pimento and red pepper jelly makes anything amazing. The ham was hash like consistency. Hashbrowns were almost like fried mashed potato squares. Super yummy.
google avatar

Kristina N.

Yelp
Long wait on weekend (as expected) but delicious food. Arrived around 10:45am on a Sunday as we were heading back to NY. The line began outside the door but you couldn't gauge how long it would take bc of the line inside. One register w/ one cashier that day. Took about 45 mins before I reached the front. 2 people working the kitchen. One assistant helping the cashier. One bar back clearing and cleaning tables. The cashier had to step away and clear tables as well, this pissed off some of the customers as the line was slow and long but I empathized with her as it would just be different groups of people getting pissed off if there wasn't a clean table to dine in at. I got my order to go, I wish i ordered more! We got a hot chicken sandwich, another breakfast sandwich w ham and pimento cheese, Italian sandwich, pastry with jalapeño sausage, blueberry muffin. Word of advice to get there early if you plan on dining in or taking out (one line) and some items sell out, I snagged the last blueberry muffin but there were plum ones remaining. If I lived local, I would come often!
google avatar

Jocelyn M.

Yelp
The hot sauces were really good. My husband got the burrito (maybe a little too heavy on the beans) and I had biscuits and gravy with hash brown and scrambled eggs. It was perfectly seasoned, definitely no complaints. The wait was a bit long but once we ordered, the food came out quickly. The place has a diner vibe but not overly so.
google avatar

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Dutch's is the best breakfast/lunch in town. Everything is from scratch, which is an incredible achievement considering the range of the menu. Many simple foods made remarkably well, and then some elaborate foods that are also very pleasing. Make sure to take a bakery item to-go, as they are exceptional. This is the place to take guests in from out of town, and to go once a week as a weekend ritual (as we do). Dutch's exemplifies perfectly why Portland is known as a food destination. I recommend it to everyone and all are delighted!
google avatar

Kate S.

Yelp
I've reviewed Dutch's before but today I had the turkey hash and I wanted to write about it, because it was awesome. The eggs were cooked to order, the toast was soft and delightful, and the jelly that came with the toast was I think an underrated gem. But the hash! Incredible. It's always a treat when a diner makes their own hash. Not quite Becky's or Miss Portland level hash, but great in its own right. And as compared with Becky's, it's not offered as a premium against the canned stuff, it's just homemade. I've also talked about the restaurant's aesthetic before, but I had two realizations today. I think the tables are a perfect shade to be the background in food porn - and the cool reggae and smooth electronic music here is ideal for the wake-and-bakers among us. Savvy.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Dutch's is such an amazing Portland restaurant - I have never had a less than stellar meal here. There's a reason people line up early in the morning and wait for this food - it's worth it! Highly, highly recommended the corned turkey hash - one of my top items to order. The spicy chicken biscuit, biscuit and gravy, blueberry pancakes & grilled banana bread are all top notch as well! I've eaten more breakfasts than lunches at Dutch's, but what I have tried has also been stellar. Do not miss the Cuban sandwich! Also make sure to grab a bottle of their hot sauce to take home! Staff are helpful, knowledgeable and kind. It's a no frills atmosphere, almost similar to a school cafeteria vibe, but it WORKS. Don't change a thing Dutch's, you are perfect.
google avatar

Joshua P.

Yelp
Orders the chicken biscuit with sausage gravy. I was a happy camper. Ask for their house hot sauce on the side. It's worth it. Ambiance is blah. You order at the counter when you walk in and then they call your number when it's ready. My brother ordered the lox sandwich and for some reason took exceptionally longer than our other orders. It was odd bc his sandwich was the only one that didn't require any cooking. When we asked about it they just replied, "it's coming" as we see later orders getting their food first. I chalk it up as an odd encounter and hopefully an anomaly, but would have been nice if they just said "sorry we had to remake it" or "sorry (insert honest answer)."
google avatar

Jon T.

Yelp
Loved the decor of the place. Walk up counter to order. Large screens full of tasty images. Easy order/pay. Seats and tables clean. Despite a grey, wet day, inside was bright and warm and cheerful Food was amazing. Hash was crisp on bottom, abundant, and great rich flavors. Eggs spot on. Hash browns were amazingly shaped cubes - crunchy, potatoy & almost a meal unto themselves. For second time in 12 hours was super impressed by the bread accompanying the meal Go. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Beth C.

Yelp
First time into Dutch's and it was memorable. No line. Friendly waitstaff. The menu is eclectic and innovative. I ordered the PORTLAND BREAKFAST. Consisting of, 2 eggs any style & crispy hash browns choice of bacon, sausage, or pulled ham & choice of English muffin, biscuit, bagel or country toast($12.50). This was a behemoth amount of food! The scrambled eggs were moist and fluffy. These are the best hash browns I have ever eaten, big and crispy with a luscious center. The pulled ham was interesting. A whole baked ham, pulled, then griddled. Nice crispy edges but a little salty. The homemade English muffin was also griddled, it was light with a pillowy texture. Dutch's also makes their own cultured butter, jams, and hot sauce. This place is a solid choice for Breakfast and Lunch. Serving up the trifecta of quality, low prices, and epic portions. GET HERE!!
google avatar

Terrie S.

Yelp
This place is great!! It is kinda old school where you walk up and place your order at the counter. Their hash browns are phenomenal! Which is what most people go for. Their breakfast sandwich is pretty good. Their coffee is just okay, but I do realize this is not what they are know for. So, if you want to try the most amazing hash browns, then you 100% have to check them out. Totally amazing.
google avatar

Brandy H.

Yelp
Fun ambiance and amazing breakfasts! Got the Portland breakfast with biscuit and maple sausage. The maple sausage was a little strange and took some getting used to...hints of sweetness, plus rosemary in the sausage patty. My wife got it with bacon and that was great. Their home fries are heaven. Little pillowy cubes of boiled potato that seem like they are cubes and deep fried. And their blueberry pancake, blueberry muffin and pastries are fantastic!
google avatar

Lea L.

Yelp
Tots are simply fire. Get the tots....! Their pastries are made in house. We casually devoured our Almonds croissant while waiting for the rest of our order standing up by the take out area, we had for plan to do a bite each and back in the box but that didn't go as planned. Everything else was delicious as well. I'm already looking forward to more Dutch's tots
google avatar

Jay J.

Yelp
Very good breakfast stop. Quick, easy, consistent, and food is very good. Nice upgraded diner vibe. Basic breakfast is solid, biscuits and gravy very good, and baked goods are excellent. Unique and perfected take on hash browns, house hot sauce is a nice touch. Only negative so far is I would not recommend breakfast burrito unless you delete the hash browns, otherwise is a salty hash brown burrito. Can usually find parking right out front and one of our go to spots.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
So good!! Coffee and food is delicious. We got brewed coffee and a mango croissant. Breakfast sandwich and bagels were so fulfilling
google avatar

Anna O.

Yelp
In the three years I have been going up to Maine I have not great breakfast experience. Dutch's changed this. The pancake was super good. The chicken sandwich was amazing the hash browns that are crispy in every bite.
google avatar

Eric O.

Yelp
Bland and overpriced-the only thing that was decent was the eggs. The hash browns look great -but have hardly any seasoning or salt, staff was nice. Can't justify spending $40 for a breakfast burrito and a simple egg and bacon breakfast. Plenty of other places in Portland I'd be willing to pay $40 for breakfast/brunch but not at Dutch's. -The self serve water cups need to be thrown away/recycled it's gross how worn the edges are on the glasses.
google avatar

Alyssa N.

Yelp
The hype is 1000% real!! We finally made it to Dutch's (literally the minute they opened on a Saturday morning!) And was honestly stunned we were alone on our breakfast adventure! The menu has so much to choose from it can be a bit overwhelming - but everything we tried was spot on. The hash browns and banana bread came highly recommended so we got both and they did not disappoint. That butterscotch sauce on the banana bread is insane. The breakfast burrito was delicious (I have a cilantro aversion so that part wasn't my fave) and my husbands fried chicken biscuit was insanely good. Service was extremely friendly and quick! You order at the register, get a number, and they bring your food. Remember to grab silverware for your meal and also clean up at the appropriate stations when you're done. Next time- I gotta try the blueberry muffin and some of their special baked goods (donuts!!!). I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Dylan K.

Yelp
Had a ton of breakfast here and this place is the best. I considered knocking a star off because I called and asked how long the wait was, they said 45 mins, I went anyways, got there within 5 minutes and literally only 3 people in the whole restaurant. Anyways, the loaded hash browns are incredibly good with that cheese sauce. The best thing on the menu is the griddled banana bread with butterscotch and it's amazing and only $6. 10/10 perfection with the food
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I finally made it to Dutch's. We have heard so many good things seen posts on social media and finally, we made the it! I love the location because I am one who is down for an adventure and window shopping. They do not have location parking, so plan to find a meter and take a stroll unless you are fortunate to find a spot right up close! Once inside it is all about Maine, mountain names and hiking trails. No waitstaff, you go to the counter place your order and they give you a plastic number to place on table after you seat yourself. Someone brings you your order. Food is fantastic! I had three things in mind that I wanted to try, Avocado toast off of their breakfast menu ( which you can add an egg ) or their lunch menu, the Cubano or fried chicken sandwich. All sounded amazing by their descriptions on the menu board. The Avocado toast kept calling my name so that is what I ordered, which is what my husband also ordered. I got an over easy egg and he added two poached to his. They also have this banana bread on their menu that my husband could not pass up. He also had a side of their loaded hash browns. I added a side of pulled ham to my order. The food was so fresh and delicious! That banana bread was to die for! I really look forward to returning to try the other two items that were on my mind!

Mads B.

Yelp
Maybe I got the wrong thing. Order the breakfast Sammy, which was pretty good. I really liked the biscuit, and I'm picky about my biscuits. I should have stopped here. But, alas, I paid extra to make the Sammy a meal with coffee and hash browns. This was my critical error. The coffee was extremely bitter and undrinkable. The hash browns look amazing but inside they are mashed potatoes. So really they're fried mashed potatoes. Could still be good, but they were woefully under seasoned. They make a good BEC breakfast Sammy but so do a lot of places.

Tom W.

Yelp
Everything was deliciously different. Excellent croissants! Biscuits & gravy and broccoli hash with ham was outstanding.
google avatar

CJ J.

Yelp
Amazing potatoes. Good cheddar broccoli hash. A bit pricey for what it is but god damn those potatoes keep me coming back
google avatar

Robin L.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast. It's like a serve yourself dinner. Food was good, especially the hash browns. Friendly service. Bacon cooked perfectly, eggs fluffy. It's a bit confusing when you enter - you're not sure if you sit down, grab a table or order first - but the girl at the counter was helpful. Nice place to stop for breakfast.

Yelp
What can I NOT say, overall diner feel, super clean, and very inviting staff. Food came out quick, hot, and was absolutely delish. My BFF and I shared a Corned Turkey Hash plate, which they gave us an extra plate for, and got the Raspberry Corn Muffin and Savory Croissant! Shared it all, just would have like the Croissant warmed. . . . . We should have asked. Also, grab the Antioxident Screwdriver, very yummy and healthy, a little!!! Get the hashbrow n s, they are hea en in a little cube!!! You do order at the counter, sit, and they bring you the food. Definitely will be back with more friends.. maybe for lunch!!

Yelp
After years of coming to Dutch's and having the best service experiences I've had anywhere (not to mention incredibly good food!), I decided to make a Yelp account *just* so I could write a review for Dutch's. Every time I've come in, from the very beginning, I have been treated with nothing but the utmost respect and kindness from the staff, and the quality of the food is really far above and beyond what they could be charging for it. After the pandemic, they redid their dining area with new booths and decorations, and it's never felt more welcoming and comfortable. Even as someone with lots of anxiety about being in public spaces, I find that I have options for where to sit that keep me safe and insulated with whichever friend I brought along. The specials are consistently amazing, and keep the experience fresh even after years of being a regular customer there. As much as I've come to love the static parts of the menu for their consistently high quality and reliability, I find myself missing the specials every time I try them and watch them be replaced by something else new and exciting. There really is no place I'd rather eat, and the kindness and respect of the staff has made Dutch's the only place I've ever felt truly loyal to. If they were to close within my lifetime, the city of Portland would never be the same. I genuinely hope I can continue being a regular at Dutch's until the day I die.

Yelp
Great sandwich, one of the best BLTs I've ever had! Busy place but not too long of a wait

Yelp
I came here hoping to try their Popover Benedict special, but they've stopped making since COVID due to the volatility of hollandaise sauce. So I got their Portland Breakfast instead with poached eggs, pulled ham, and sour dough bread. The pulled ham was flavorful and tasted great with the poached eggs. However, the sour dough bread was tough and dry. My friend got the MacDutch special with egg, cheddar, bacon on a maple griddle cake. It was a step up from McDonald's breakfast sandwiches, but nothing special. We were most excited for their crispy hashbrowns. They looked amazing from the outside, but when we bit into them, we found that they were under seasoned. Very disappointing! Overall, it was an okay experience. I like that everything is made in house. However, their execution missed the mark.

Yelp
Casual, quick, and super yummy. Try the kale melt. On the pricey side for smaller portions, but would definitely still come back.

Yelp
Ala carte is the way to GO! Everything we ordered was surprisingly delicious! I was apprehensive about Dutch's at first with the fast food type ordering. But the food is definitely well prepared. We had a toasted bagel, avocado mash (fantastic!!), two eggs and a side of cream cheese. So basically a build your own avocado toasted bagel. The avocado was mashed fresh and delicious with, no add ins. Your healthy ordering can go south pretty fast at Duchess. My husband had fried banana bread and our friend had blueberry pancakes, which actually looked really good. So if you can navigate the menu at dutches, you're bound to find something you'll really like.

Yelp
And you may find yourself waiting in a long line And you may find yourself in another part of Portland And you may find yourself behind the counter ready to order And you may find yourself eating the best biscuits and gravy And you may ask yourself, "How did they make these amazing hashbrowns?" Letting the days go by, line is moving quickly Letting the days go by, brandy coffee is the bomb Into the blue again, after the gravy's gone Once in a lifetime, Dutch's grub is just the best And you may ask yourself, "How do I work this?" And you may ask yourself, "Where is that popover benedict?" And you may tell yourself, "This is not my normal breakfast" And you may tell yourself, "This is not my boring breakfast" Letting the days go by, let the pastries hold me down Letting the days go by, fresh squeezed OJ flowing down Into the blue again, after the gravy's gone Once in a lifetime, Dutch's blowing my mind Same as it ever was, same as it ever was Same as it ever was, same as it ever was Same as it ever was, same as it ever was Same as it ever was, same as it ever was Hope the Dutch's team sees this : ) The BEST breakfast spot.

Yelp
Make time for Dutch's if you're in the area. Shop is very spacious with plenty of seating. Unfortunately, I had to take my order to go due to covid precautions. Do yourself a favor and get the crispy chicken biscuit. The most tender piece of chicken covered in sausage gravy in a biscuit. (I'm craving this as I'm writing my review). Grab some tissues on the way out because the biscuit can get a little messy.
