On the Grid : Dyckman Bakery

"Generally speaking, one should never describe another person as perfect. It lacks understanding of complexities, it's a pedestal nobody can live up to. And yet, what if a person feels this way? Is it correct to say, 'I love you?' If Dyckman Bakery were a person: 'I love you.' This bakery is just so damn good. The coffee is perfect and to die for. The traditional Greek paper cups are perfect. You know, the one you have a ceramic version of. The treats are affordable in a city that is not. The bakery is comfortable and familiar when too many storefronts and approachable faces are disappearing. You need to come here. Not for me, for you. For love. Always for love." - Jeanne Henry

Just picked up my birthday cake and it was delicious and appealing. The baker does an impressive job dressing up these cakes. The staff are so friendly which is why my mom comes here for the apple turnovers and other cream filled pastries. I've always enjoyed Dominican cakes, especially the ones that have fruit fillings.

Google
I rarely leave negative reviews, but this place really missed the mark. The bread was mediocre at best — bland and far from fresh. The donuts were even worse: clearly frozen, poorly defrosted (still cold and doughy inside), and overly sweet without any real flavor. Definitely not what you’d expect from a proper bakery. What really sealed the deal, though, was the rude service. The woman behind the counter was unpleasant and seemed annoyed just by our presence

Google
There sandwiches are the best. I love it here. They so nice and they are very fast. Is usually a couple people so you have to wait sometimes. Is a small bakery. You can sit down and eat. They pan relleno is so good. I always get like 2.

The best oatmeal in town. The service can be faster, they take their sweet time. However, the food is worth the wait.

Went in there to buy my Mother, Father, & two Niece's some nice sweet's. They all enjoyed it very much. Said it was very good. So thank you. I have boughten different things from there, & there all pretty good. One of my absolute favorite's is the Flan that they make. My Parent's like it a lot as well. The employee's who work there are very respectful so that is obviously a plus. If I have the cash on me to I always love to give a tip which they deserve. The photo is of the delicious Flan they make. Yum! 🙂

Coming here since I was a child. Great Dominican cake. Will customize cakes for you. Delish breads and caribbean pastries. The ladies are no joke, but they are good people.

Google
It would have been so much better if they offer fresh Tres Leche instead of freezing it. Especially that it contains milk. You can see through the picture that the milk was sill frozen when I get the piece.

Google
I understand regulars may get preference but I am constantly seeing others get served before me. Today I was refused service and 5 people were allowed to go before me. Will not come back.

Yelp
The must-have item may be the avena drink. While my trip to Inwood Hill Park was a disappointment - sunny when I left, cloudy on arrival - I'm glad I discovered this spot. Beverage, pineapple cake piece and Cuban sandwich were only $9 overall. (The aforementioned weather also meant subpar food pictures, I assure you they look better in person).

Yelp
I enjoyed Dyckman Bakery! We got the Avena drink, pineapple cake slice, guava+cream pastry, and tres leches cake!!! The baked goods and drinks are really delicious here and they have a wide menu. Came here after visiting the Met Cloisters on a winter weekend and having snacks was such a treat. Every sip & bite was just wonderful, the price is right, and I cannot wait to go back again.

Yelp
I really want to highlight this bakery! It's located on Dyckman Street (duh, go figure) in Inwood and a 2 minute walk from the Dyckman St A subway station. I was immediately astonished by the wide offerings of baked goods they have as well as the PRICE of everything! This bakery has to be one of the most generous in the city in terms of quantity, quality, and price. For example, two big donuts are only $1 and most baked goods around between $1-$1.25. When I came to Dyckman with my friend, I was originally planning to buy one item but the food was so good and cheap I couldn't resist buying more! So with what little change my friend and I had left, we managed to get a cubano sandwich, bread pudding, a strawberry puff tart, two quesitos, and a slice of flan. All of this cost maybe $10!!! And everything was so, so tasteful! I saved a quesito and had it the next day microwaved and it was so sweet and soft. Dyckman Bakery is a phenomenal local business and I really it gets the recognition it deserves! Some of the reviews complained about the language barrier and it was noticeable, but insignificant. I was able to order and ask for extra napkins and utensils just fine. I'm planning to make another trip up to Inwood just for Dyckman... with another $10 I think I'll be able to try nearly everything in their bakery selections.

Yelp
I have lived right around the corner from this place for many years, but only recently visited. I'm bummed I didn't get there sooner! The cafe con leche was fantastic, as were the three baked goods that I tried. I also ordered a Cuban sandwich, which was cheap and huge. The service was great. I'm really surprised by the comments about language barriers. I am a native English speaker who knows a few words of Spanish. I went in expecting to speak in Spanish and possibly struggle a little. Instead, the woman behind the counter (correctly) assumed that I spoke English and that is how she greeted me. I continued to try to use my Spanish throughout our transaction and she replied in English. I'm happy I finally got a clue and found this place - I'll be back!

Yelp
I can't judge anything else... but the avena and the butter toast! Hahahahah, you are probably thinking, "Five stars just for that!?" Yesss! Trust me, not everyone can make avena like that! I'm hooked!! Thank you for never letting me down :).

Yelp
Worst bakery ever, I decided to order a few slices of cake, cupcakes among others, and it was just the most awful refrigerated taste.

Yelp
A friend and I came by here around 8:30pm or so on a Friday night. There were people quickly popping in to grab something. We got the tres leches ($3, cash only) and opened it up on the counter to share. Low key made a little bit of a mess since this is wet tres leches. There's not really any seating here and the chairs they do have are ripped so we just stood and DEVOURED this cake. Absolutely phenomenal cake.

Yelp
Didn't expect it but, Dyckman Bakery was really phenomenal. The menu is pretty extensive so will probably be back to try some of the other items. They have a superb menu also. I became great friends with the staff, who are all awesome and super friendly. Very surprised, very impressed.

Yelp
So the owner won't be able to read this because they apparently don't speak English. Even though we ordered here several times when it was empty. Compliments on the food and great coffee, I thought we found a new spot. Suddenly upon return, when there is a crowd the staff couldn't understand us. That is when they acknowledged us, three time in a row they flat out refused service. We are Americans and open to many cultures coming to this country, why do you have a cafe here that refuses to serve us? Very strange how unwelcome we are, I know you hate the feeling of being shut out, so why do it? Show love, why are you in business anyway???? Just to serve a select few? Good luck with that, hate and discrimination is a horrible business model.

Yelp
Perfect place to get dessert after a patacon :) Great customer service. I really appreciate the friendly customer service when there is a bit of a language barrier. Tres leches ($3) was perfection, so moist, icing isn't too rich, and a VERY* generous size. Flan ($2) smaller but still a good portion and worth it. They have a small flan cake that's $6, a little more than 3x the size, so I might go with that next time. They have tons of breakfast options, pastries, doughnuts, and ice cream birthday cakes. Definitely thinking of coming here for the next birthday :)

Yelp
The coffee there is really good. If you like strong coffee I suggest this bakery. You can ask without the cinnamon if you don't like cinnamon in your coffee. I recommend this place for their coffee

Yelp
Delicious flan and pastries. The staff are friendly and very prompt. The prices are very good too. This is my go to bakery when I want a treat. I always think I'm going to by bread there but I get distracted by the pastries. I'll update this review when I try there other products.

Yelp
Some of the best donuts I have ever had in my life. It's just your basic sugared donut but it's incredibly well done. And the price is right. I always stop by this place when I'm in the area.

Yelp
I was here the first time at least 6 years ago when I first lived in this neighborhood. I like their cafe con leche, period. And I take it without sugar. You just have to learn how to order in Spanish (or try to use English, it also works) if ever you find yourself here. A lot of interesting baked goods here that you can try, if you're up to it. The place is not at all fancy.

Yelp
Came here after a trip to the cloisters. Got the flan, it was perfect because it wasn't too sweet but just sweet enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. The women who worked there were super sweet too.

Yelp
Try the coco pina. You will not be disappointed. This place is great and everything is super affordable.

Yelp
Dyckman Bakery is small bakery located near the A train station. It's actually a great place to go to in the morning to grab some breakfast. I usually go for the toast with a lemonade or any juice really. There are plenty of people that go their for their morning coffee, as well. However, more often than not I will pass by this bakery to grab a snack. I love the quesitos, which are only $1. They're these puff pastries filled with something that I can only describe as sort of a sweet cream cheese filling. I would recommend getting one of those if you're unsure of what to try. All the pastries and bread are fresh and recently baked from the look of things. I've never had an issue with customer service at this establishment.

Jose C.

Yelp
This cake was horrible. I am dominican and I know that Dominican cake does not taste bad like the cake I received.

A W.

Yelp
Came in yesterday morning. Solid huge chunk of pineapple cake for $1.25. Many people were ordering up cafe con leche. Saw a assortment of cookies and other cakes priced cheap. I know the neighborhood is rejoicing with sweet glee
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
The best part about this bakery are the prices and atmosphere and service. Big chunks of cake for a buck or buck-fifty, amazing satisfying deals are everywhere, but these are just coffee-dipping appetite-suppressing types of cakes, definitely out of a box, definitely not artisanal, but they're tasty for a buck! So far I've tried Carrot, Corn, Pineapple, Coconut, and Bread Pudding -- all are about the same, always a good value; and the ambience is great.

Lisa S.

Yelp
What a fantastic local business. Most everything is priced under $2 and the 2 items I bought were really good. A really great find for me as I explored Inwood...you should visit them!

Malcolm L.

Yelp
Great coffee for a tiny spot, really hot and strong for a cheap price for a large cup

Yelp
More like DICKman Bakery. There's a difference between a language barrier and being cross-culturally rude. Being genuinely unhelpful is not the same as not understanding what your customer is saying. For some reason, I actually bought items in this universally appalling joint: Coconut cookie con leche & pineapple cake. Both items were heavier than they looked and sat like an anvil in my stomach. Store-imposed culture shock or just an awful experience, none of which was my fault? I can't say for sure.

Deepak S.

Yelp
I called them regarding their menu of baked goods. Nobody speaks English. I spoke to 3 different people and all said "no English". Then they hung up... Very odd to see a business where nobody speaks English.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Great baked goods most of which are $1. Coffee is extreme and undrinkable black so I wouldn't recommend that if you like it dark.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
I'm not sure why the reviewer below had such a problem, I speak maybe 10 words total in Spanish and I am able to order various things just fine on a regular basis and no one gives me an attitude. The doughnuts and avena are very good here and everything seems quite fresh.
google avatar

Albert F.

Yelp
Order a cake from here. LOVE the dominican cake with guava filling. YUM!

Yelp
My dad used to get my birthday cake here. Still great, the coffee is really awesome
