Good News: Bananas Have Been Solved

"I noticed the Korean grocery-store chain E-Mart has started selling the “haru hana banana” — the “one-a-day banana” — a pack of five bananas arranged by ripeness so you can eat one each day: the banana on the far left is ready to eat the day of purchase and the one on the far right will be good in a few days. This clever idea was pointed out by Twitter user and blogger @AskAKorean via Daum, and I think it’s genius at work; nothing will ever be the same." - Nikita Richardson

Google
I heard about this place and how they sell a variety of African/international food produce and I had to go there. Indeed I was glad I visited and plan to shop there going forward. They sell almost everything you can think of; from fresh seafood to fishies and meat of different kinds, fresh vegetables, spices, etc. It’s a great place to shop based on great selection of everything.

Google
E Mart is an enormous Korean-style hypermarket, offering a vast array of goods from fresh groceries and live seafood to clothing and electronics. It’s a fantastic one-stop-shop for both local and imported products, including hard-to-find Korean items. The sheer size and variety make it a great place to explore and stock up, especially for unique Asian snacks and quality produce.

Lowee C.

Google
I have been fortunate a friend told me about E-Mart in Newport News. This store has plenty of fresh produce and seafood and hard to find international food items.

Google
Got a grip load of snacks for a movie night here. So worth it!!! The store is well maintained and fully stocked with everyday grocery needs to snacks. Employees were very nice too. Highly recommended dropping in. There's also a great little bakery next door as well.

Google
They do not properly store their seafood, they leave it out overnight on ice…& cover it with a sign…I can tell it’s not being stored right because I purchased my shrimp from them on a Tuesday night & by Wednesday night they had this really foul smell that made my whole fridge stink!! Shrimp don’t usually do that! I asked can I get a replacement for my shrimp & the lady who works at the store told me no!! They used to put everything away! I don’t know how they decided to start leaving the seafood out overnight & calling it fresh! Even some of the food in the deep freezer isn’t covered!! Food borne illness everywhere! Beware and don’t eat smelly shrimp. Money down the drain I am really upset.

Google
This place has good products like seafood, veggies and nice cuts of beef and chicken. Just be careful with some shoppers. This store is constantly monitored by police due to shoplifting.

Google
This place is where to get fresh seafood!! It has many kinds of food variety and the prices are good. Also found Aunt Carol’s sauce on the seafood case. You want to pick up a bottle. It’s a sauce you’re going to keep in your kitchen.

Yelp
Sophia and I recently shopped here for some international products. E Mart has been our go-to for years every time we planned to cook her egg rolls. You can't beat going to a place where you can buy products for a good price. Let's see how the shopping went. We were good with finding products for food to cook. For Sophia's egg rolls, we purchased bean sprouts and spring roll wraps along with ramen noodles and seaweed. I also bought t-bone steaks for a good price for air frying. The best thing about E Mart is they have a lot of stuff you wouldn't find in regular grocery stores. Hopefully, I can find some things to try for meals. You'll never know what you can discover here. Well, there you have it. Great service from staff, a whole lot of items to pick for yourself (and others too) and an environment where it's comfortable and not giving you a rush vibe. We'll continue to be life-long customers :)

Yelp
Great place to get fresh fish. Excellent place to get seafood. They also offers a variety of all types of grocery products to include vegetables, meats, and milk products.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food mart. One of the only places that offers REAL KEY LIMES. Friendly staff and ambiance. You're guaranteed to find what you're looking for.

Yelp
I really have to pick and choose what I purchase from this market. I've bought shrimp several times and they used to taste good but for the last year they don't taste fresh and smell fishy. Scallops dont taste like Scallops and mussels were horrible. I've bought salmon that had so many bones in it I couldn't eat it as well as the flounder even after I had them clean and debone it. I just stick to the fresh herbs, peppers, and the already peeled garlic which I buy a lot. Oxtails are pretty good too.
google avatar

Virginia P.

Yelp
I always find what I need for the Japanese dishes I make. The produce is fresh and the prices are reasonable. When they did not have some rice crackers I needed, the store buyer showed me photos from a catalog to make sure he was going to order the right item.
google avatar

Marvin L.

Yelp
A decent size store with international foods and fresh fish....heads lol! The shelves are well stocked with fresh produce, frozen items, and can goods from a blend of Asian and Hispanic foods. This store is similar to farm fresh but at a smaller scale. Great place to get Mexican spices and I picked up a couple of Asian utensils for Korea spicy noddles. Additionally, they have Mexican breads and goods. The Asian breads and pastries are supplied by Bread Garden located right next door. I will definitely return to this location for some needed supplies. Highly recommend this store to fellow yelpers!
google avatar

Samantha F.

Yelp
A well stock non-American grocery store. Heavily supplied in Asian (including Indian), African, Hispanic and Caribbean staple items needed for traditional minority foods. While this store may not have as many items outside of Hispanic and Asain items there are usually various type of what your looking for under different names.

Richard A.

Yelp
Asian noodles are a plus. They're far left when you enter store. Fresh seafood and various Oriental products.
google avatar

Juanne D.

Yelp
I would definitely come back again. They have a great array of Hispanic and Asian foods. Everything you could want, they have. They also have fresh ingredients. I do all my grocery shopping here when I'm in the area and you can't get a lot of the things here anywhere else.
google avatar

Lamont S.

Yelp
E Mart is a great place to come to get Asian, Indian, Latin, etc grocery items that you can't find in your average neighborhood grocery store. Their selection of vegetables, meats, rice, seafood, etc is astounding. You don't smell fish in the seafood section as I have in Grand Mart in Virgnia Beach. Great place to come and do some grocery shopping and also buy some items you may need in your kitchen.
google avatar

P D.

Yelp
Good variety of international food items. Found everything I was looking for and other things that I was not planning on buying.

Yelp
E-mart may have quantity, but it doesn't usually have quality or even price. Want meat? Uncle's Farm, just down the road, has better quality, hands down. The fish market is pretty decent, though Trans' Seafood isn't far away and is a good alternative. Want veggies? Try Uncle's Farm again, Jung Ha, or Farm Fresh near Home Depot. Farm Fresh is now an Asian mart and the produce there is pretty decent. Need medicinal herbs? Emart doesn't have them, try Sun World. For cooking herbs try Farm Fresh, World Market, or the small asian Mart down behind Taco Bell on Warwick. For dry goods or side dishes try Jung Ha. E-mart really doesn't check sell by dates as often as they should. Jung Ha is also cheaper and better quality on fresh stuff. The before mentioned Asian grocer behind Taco Bell is also good. Never buy frozen things from Emart unless you are 100% sure it's not frozen together or freezerburned. Go to Jung Ha, Farm Fresh or Uncle's Farm instead. I'd only use Emart if you can't find it elsewhere.

Yelp
I finally made a trip to the E Mart after hearing good things about it from a coworker. The inside is a little unorganized with prices not matching some products and very dated but don't let that deter you. This place has products from all over the world to include Korea, Japan,Thailand, Mexico, and the Middle East. The aisles are labeled by product origin so that makes it easier to find what you are looking for. When I stopped in I didn't look at the produce although there looked to be a large selection. I was super impressed with the variety of meat and fresh fish available at good prices. The fish looked super fresh so I will be back soon to pick some up. This time around I bought noodles, seaweed snacks, cookies, candy, and a big bag of jasmine rice. I had fun looking at all the snacks and various sweets and I thought the prices were fair for imported products. At checkout I noticed there was a lady at a table selling some small homegoods and making fresh mung bean pancakes for sale. As someone who enjoys cooking food from all over the world I will certainly be back to pick up my ingredients.

Yelp
My little Asian heart is BURSTING with joy!!! I am so happy I found my lumpia wrapper here first of all. The variety of fruits and vegetables is so great! You can definitely can't find of this stuff at a Food Lion. There's a healthy mix of everything Asian in this store and also Mexican goodies from what I saw. There are also household goods and kitchen appliances as well. DEFINITELY going to make this a frequent stop for groceries.
google avatar

Nataly M.

Yelp
Very nice and clean. Fast & friendly checkout. Was glad i could get every thing i needed during these times (pandemic). The oranges in the bag are really goooood! Always sells out tho! Def recommend for produce, veggies and fruits

H L.

Yelp
The place is a bit smelly. The Asian food choices are limited. A lot Spanish foods though. The fruits and vegetables are not very fresh. We have to throw away some later. The parking area security is in great doubt when someone unknown try to talk to us.
google avatar

Gnee R.

Yelp
Lots of variety here! Seafood selection is decent, and there's a good mix of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Mexican foods available. We visit often.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Wonderful assortment of nationalities represented in this store. The staff are helpful and curtious, and the store is kept pretty clean. I haven't tried the iced seafood section yet, but it looks well kept! Come check it out it there is something for everyone!
google avatar

Eduardo S.

Yelp
This place is really hit or miss especially the produce. Seems as though the bulk of the produce is either super fresh or half rotten. That may have to do with their delivery truck though. They do have a large fresh seafood section in the back of the store. I either go away really happy that I came or wishing that I'd never come back. One thing that really irritates me though is the lack of the command of English by some of the employees. Who, when asked a question in English cop an attitude because they don't understand you and can't answer you. Really??? Don't get mad at me for YOUR inability to communicate!
google avatar

Izell T.

Yelp
Let's talk about the EMart, if you like to cook everything besides American foods. This store may have what ur looking for from Korean to African, Indian, and Philippino etc. I consider myself a self taught Chef. so when I'm in the mood to cook something ethnic I head to this store, the clerks are friendly and knowledgeable and the produce is always on point and the meats are to. Lastly some have complained about the language not being clear English, I dont have a problem with this, 1st of all its international as the name implies and every person can't speak clear english if their new immigrants, no need for rudeness, how about some empathy and kindness I'm sure it will be returned. Back to the review,So if your in the vicinity check them out!

Yelp
This store is selling the Face Masks you normally find in your local Doctors office. The cheap paper ones with rubber bands that go on your ears. They seem to be GOUGING people who are fearful of the Wuhan Covid - 19 Virus that's currently going around They list a price for 50 of those masks at 110 dollars. Thinking of how they would be taking advantage in this was why I decided to look around their store at other things. Garlic is usually 99 cents for fresh, yet now it's 3.79 for an item I purchased from them about a Month ago. I checked the price of a Bag of Rice that was 25 dollars two weeks ago and now it's 41 dollars for the exact same item. I walked the isles and found other items I has recently purchased and in some cases the price of which was up 50 to 100% while some others were only about 10%. Normally I like this store, in spite of the horrific smells and the dirty floors and that their meats are always miss-marked , but given that they are GOUGING during this pandemic I think I won't be shopping there any more. Hung-Ha and the Farm Fresh Asian store for me from now on. They just dropped to one star from three in my book because there isn't a zero star rating available.
google avatar

Melody G.

Yelp
A guy that worked there grabbed a item out my moms hand while she was looking at something, didn't like that at all. The seafood and meat areas smells really bad. Poor customer service but the prices are great though especially for produce.

Yelp
E-Mart is my go to whenever I'm in need of ingredients for Filipino food or just craving some random yummy Asian snack. They do offer a variety of things for Asian (Philippines, Korea, Japan), Hispanic, and I'm sure other cultures as well that I'm not knowledgeable of. I do enjoy their selection of seafood. They are fresh and definitely a lot more affordable at some other stores I've been to. Their meat selection is small, but they offer broader cuts of meat (pork belly, pork neck bones for example) which is great when I'm cooking dishes from my home country. Their produce section is also very large, although they are hit or miss. Some day I go and there's barely anything and I have to make do with over-handled veggies/fruits, and others they're restocking and everything is so fresh I could cry. Their snack section (my favorite section in ANY market) is very limited also. They do have a decent selection but not enough like I'm used to. There are chips from the Philippines that you will find in any other Filipino store (since they're the most popular) and you wouldn't find it here. E-Mart is still one of my favorite stores to go out (and it is the closest one to me) but they could improve on their selections!

Yelp
I've been here several times now, mostly for specialty produce and some of the Korean banchan they have. The quality of the produce is very hit and miss, and sometimes certain items will be out of stock for upwards of a week. Prices are reasonable, at least. The store isn't the absolute cleanest I've been to, but it's certainly not the worst. There is definitely a language barrier with some of the employees, but I haven't found it to be too much of a problem with my limited Spanish. This store is definitely not in the best area, so if safety is a concern I'd recommend only going in the morning or early afternoon. I have had guys hanging around the front of the store ask for my number (does this actually work?) but my RBF and wedding ring usually keep this to a minimum. Occasionally there is a Newport News police officer standing in front of the store, and today's experience probably sealed the deal on my last trip here. I'm fairly sure he was following me around the store, as I kept seeing him pop up in every aisle I went to. I know I'm kinda brown and wearing a hoodie in 80-85 degree weather, but if he'd just asked I'd gladly have taken it off to show him the scars from a past dermatological condition that I'm trying to keep out of the sun. This store is okay for convenience's sake, but I will probably just take my business over to Norfolk/VB from now on.

Yelp
I moved out to VA from Seattle, where you couldn't throw a coffee cup without hitting an Asian Grocery store (not that you would ever throw a coffee cup, you recycle that thing). Moving to the Peninsula had me worried that I would not be able to find so many of the things that I got used to finding at my local grocers back in Seattle. I can now sleep easier at night. This store has an amazing selection of produce, specialty produce, meats, seafood, and international products, all at prices that will make you feel ALMOST guilty at the deal you're getting. I walked out with four full bags of groceries and had spent less than I expected... If you need anything from an Asian Pear to a Zucchini, they've got you covered.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Moved from California to Virginia and was worried I wouldn't have access to Mexican brands/food items. This place is cheap and has almost all of what I am looking for! The area is kinda sketchy though. I normally go during the day to avoid the shady looking people loitering near the shops next door. Produce section is awesome, they have tomatillos! They also got some good asian items. Haven't tried their meats though. Anyways, it's cheap and has a lot of different stuff. Come on by and don't forget to bring your pepper spray.
google avatar

Olivia R.

Yelp
FYI, this store is also called "Evergreen Mart" on Yelp. I wrote a pretty detailed review under that name. I didn't want to cut and paste that review in here because I think there's some policy against doing that. Bottom line, this store has a WIDE selection of Latin American, pan-Asian, and Near/Middle Eastern foods. I used to think of it as a Korean store, but it really carries a far more expansive and international inventory than that. The prices are also super reasonable...much less expensive for comparable ethnic items than the big name and trendier stores.
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
I wanted to make Pancit Bihon and lumpia because I missed my Filipino friends. I figured that this was the only place on the Peninsula to find Pancit noodles (Food Lion and Walmart do not carry them), so I went and E-Mart had four kinds. And they had the oyster sauce I needed, and the lumpia wrappers. I already had fish sauce, and I was surprised that there was an entire aisle of different kinds of soy sauce. When I checked out, it was much less expensive than I expected it to be. I got the products home, made the recipes that I found in advance online, and I was back in pancit heaven. While I admit that my first experience there was kinda sketch, giving them another shot was absolutely worth it and I will come back.
google avatar

Sally M.

Yelp
If you are looking for delicious frozen Korean treats, go here! This place had exactly what I was looking for: the Korean ice cream fish and the Korean melon ice cream bars. Both were pretty pricey (almost $6!), but that's slightly understandable because I believe the products are imported. The store had a bunch of other Asian foods that is hard to find in non-Asian stores, the cashier was friendly, and the place was clean. Fresh looking seafood!
google avatar

Touty B.

Yelp
I used to love this grocery store when it first opened up but now I'm can't stand it. All there items are overpriced and make sure you check the dates before you buy the can goods, they still sell them even after they expire. The frozen meat section is the worst. Stay away if you can.
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
This Harris Teeter is amazing! The guy who bagged my groceries forgot to put my sushi and eggs back in my basket. I drive out of my way to go to Harris Teeter because of their customer service and good sushi. When I called to let them know and to express how it's hard for me to drive all the way back down there because of my newborn they quickly told me that they would be happy to deliver it to me. Not only did they bring me my groceries right away but they upgraded my sushi and even packed a box of baby cookies for my little man:) Thank you for being so awesome guys:)
google avatar

Terry K.

Yelp
Also referred to as "E-Mart". Not pretty inside, but has just about anything you'd need that your "normal" grocery store DOESN'T have. Huge selection of produce, much of which I can not identify and/or pronounce. Suffice it to say all types of ethnic foods can be found here from Asian to Hispanic and more! Also fresh fish and good selections of beef and chicken. Loads of frozen selections too. I love stopping by albeit not in a great section of town..
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
E Mart is an awesome international market. We just moved to the area from Seoul, Korea and are used to having a broad choice of asian food. The Korean version of E Mart is like a super Walmart combined with a giant grocery store. I knew that this E Mart wouldn't likely be that good, but it was still an awesome place to shop. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Tavi M.

Yelp
Emart used to be great but now its a hit or miss. The produce is constantly changing in quaility. The prices as slowly rising and you can never find the same items. I use to love this store but now I avoid it if I can.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
Love fresh produce that is reasonably priced and the great cuts of fresh meat too. I'm also a fan of the big candy items that can be given as a gift too. I liked the big bag of rice in the Spanish section too. I like the brown and yellow sugar candy too. We have recommended to my family too.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
I have shopped at E-MART for several years, mainly for Latin produce. It is the only place in my area I can find an herb called culantro, also called recao. They have all the spices & Latin products I need to make all my favorite meals. I can always buy green bananas, green & ripe plantains, and other vegetables by the box when I have to make big batches of my favorite Puerto Rican dish, pasteles.
google avatar

Honeygirl R.

Yelp
I've lived in the area since 2000 and have been a regular. This store used to be called the Kim Milling Company. It is not in the best neighborhood so I tend to shop during the day, but no place is 100% safe. The store has gotten bigger, with more selection, and helpful staff. Pros: - good selection of produce and ethnic foods - prices are reasonable - multilingual staff - next door to Bread Garden (Korean bakery) - yum! - Be sure to sign up for their card and present it at each transaction because after you accumulate a certain amount of points (dep. on the amount of money you spend), you get a discount on your next purchase. Cons - some produce spoil easily, but they refrigerate them a lot more now - cost of their bagged rices are high, but the selection is great I giggled at the comment about unwanted attention. It's true. :) Overall, it's not an H Mart, but it will do. EDIT: EMart no longer offers a card membership program due to new ownership. That is unfortunate.
google avatar

christina g.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to shop, it has more Asian and Latino products than any other store I've ever been to. The workers are nice and they have an awesome selection of fresh fish. If I need fresh fish, I go to Emart. They have a person behind the counter who will scale your fish for you if you like or cut and clean it any way you like. (He accepts tips...not sure if he works for tips only but there's a huge tip jar there)

Mick D.

Yelp
Insulting signage outside store. The entire outward facing window is covered with ridiculous notices. Some gems include: 1. No taking of photographs inside due to concerns about competition from other businesses. 2. No outside packages or back packs may be brought inside. 3. Children under the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult. I could continue with this list. This is a grocery store. management needs a reality check. I made a comment about the signage to an employee who just laughed at me
google avatar

Chanelle G.

Yelp
A decent store. Produce is hit-or-miss. The mangos are always perfect. Great freezer section. Love the frozen tamales. Seafood in the back corner. They had fresh (live!) blue crabs in a lidded basket. You were somehow supposed to use the provided salad tongs to fish them out and put them in a plastic baggie... really??? Great selection of fresh shrimp and squid. Lots of selections of dried seaweed, spices, and teas. Good service, plentiful parking. Facility a bit run-down.
google avatar

Marianne S.

Yelp
Another supermarket review! E-Mart is a supermarket with a whole bunch of different ethnic food which sounds awesome but at the same time the reality of the situation is that this place needs a lot of work. It's located in not the best of areas sometimes if you go there its like watching an episode of Cops; NNPD edition. After a certain time I just don't go there by myself because the parking lot and surrounding stores attract some shady people with nothing better to do then roam around hitting on chicks or you'll find some drunk people in the parking lot just loitering playing music. Also, a couple of the stores here have been robbed at gunpoint, like the pizza place and the dollar place all the way at the ed of the strip. So yea, go during daylight hours-unless you're packing and want to take that risk. The inside of the store smells like fish and mixture of other spices which isn't horrible, at least you know they have a diverse set of things. It is somewhat organized according to cultural foods. They have a small house ware section of cheap exported things. Sometimes there is a Korean lady who makes goodies near the register, I've tried a couple of the things, not the biggest fan but it sells so someone is. Just not my taste. The seafood department is a hit or miss, prices are pretty cheap and they got a couple of variety of seafood. Sometimes not the freshest so make sure you know what you are buying. The guys at the seafood department will prepare the fish, de-bone it and fillet for you if you ask. There might be a language barrier but it is not something I have a problem with since I speak Spanish. I go here at least twice a month for a couple items that I won't find elsewhere, like breadfruit and other exotic produce mostly. The produce department is a hit or miss too. Be careful with what you buy and make sure you know how to tell if something is spoiled. Commonplace produce like apples, pears and greens are more often then not horrible bruised and rotting. And the avocados are just blackened on the inside... Every now and then I'll indulge in some noodles and overly processed frozen buns. They can be expensive but then again they are imported items from their perspective country so this is usual. Which by the way they should really check the temperatures of their frozen foods sometimes I open a product and its like exposing a mini iceberg collage of food. WTH. Overall, if you want everything in one place as far as ethnic cuisines then go to E-Mart just be sure it is during the daylight hours, be prepared to be a davy shopper throughly inspecting your produce, checking your expiration date and doing your research on meat items like seafood. OH! And ladies if you are somewhat attract be prepared to be annoyed with thirsty lingering eyes of some of the guys that work there...unless you like that kind of attention. :p
google avatar

ayanna K.

Yelp
Excellent produce section! I purchased spinach, lettuce, a pomegranate , 3 ears of corn, 2 bushels of cilantro, 2 cucumbers all for under 10 bucks! They also had specialty produce like dragon fruit ! Would definitely be back!
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
E-Mart is one of my favorite places to shop at for some hard to find items that I like to cook with along with some great selection of fresh seafood as well
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
I found E-Mart by accident, but it was a pleasant surprise. The prices are competitive (at least to NY). They have all sorts of asian foods. I'm not so sure about the shelf life of some products, some dates were pretty close to expiration dates. A lot of product was dusty. I tried to buy some ramen and it didn't ring up at the register. They called someone over and was told that the noodles I picked were sold by the box only, not individually. I tried to explain, it was on a shelf with a price but they argued with me. They said a customer opened the box and stacked it on the shelf... uh ok. Overall, good experience.
google avatar

Jesica R.

Yelp
I have been shopping there for 10 years until recently when i moved 40 miles away (tear) Hands down the largest asian grocer i've been too. The selection is emense...the fresh seafood section is STINKY like in most asian gorcery stores but this store is awesome!
google avatar

Cassie P.

Yelp
This store is great for anyone who enjoys cooking Asian food! It's the largest international food market that I've seen in the Hampton Roads area and has every Japanese item that I've been looking for.
google avatar

Levinia T.

Yelp
Probably the best place in Hampton Roads to get your Asian-inspired groceries! They have a great selection of produce, as well as fish and poultry. They have all of the ingredients you cannot find at a regular grocery store and you really can't beat the price! There is also a wide variety of Mexican ingredients and cheap spices to choose from at E-Mart. Definitely suggest it for everyday grocery shopping!
google avatar

Leo F.

Yelp
We visited this grocery store the other day because these types of markets are hard to find in the suburbs. The general area of the market looked a bit run down as was the inside of the market itself. However, on closer inspection, I found that there was a very good diversity of ethnic products (east Asian, Mexican, Indian) and at reasonable prices. There were even vegetables and dry goods that we haven't seen before. Definitely a place to visit to find something unique.
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
Reminds me of the grocery stores or shops in Southeast Asia, or at least as close as you're gonna get in Newport News. Probably best to steer clear of the produce at times but they carry a lot of food/gift items you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
