I’ve been coming to this kebab shop for years, back when the older gentleman was behind the counter. He was always warm, smiling, and clearly put his heart into the place. You could tell he cared and the food reflected that. The kebabs were absolutely spectacular. I’m pretty sure they even had a glowing review from Giles Coren on display at one point.
Sadly, my visit last night couldn’t have been more different.
It was honestly the worst chicken kebab I’ve ever had and I’ve had a lot of kebabs. The chicken came as dry little shards of meat, completely bland and lacking any real flavour. I asked for just a little chilli sauce and no garlic sauce. It didn’t arrive drowning in garlic sauce, but there was still a small amount in there and it honestly felt like that’s what they now rely on to give the meat any flavour at all.
The salad was equally disappointing — mostly strips of onion, no cucumber, about two thin slivers of tomato, and oddly, some gherkin thrown in. It just felt careless and thrown together.
I hadn’t been in a while, and I can’t help wondering if things have changed since the older gentleman stopped working there. The two guys serving looked thoroughly miserable. I know it’s not an easy job, but in all the years I visited before, I never once saw the old owner without a smile. He was friendly, kind, and consistently produced amazing food.
This was one of the most disappointing food experiences I’ve had in a long time. I genuinely hope they can turn it around for the sake of the place’s former reputation.
