Walking east on 9th Street from Washington to Broadway, I noticed the huge glass window with the etched signage E14 Gallery. The door was still open, despite there was an indication that they close at 6:00 PM. It was already 6:45 PM; thus, I peered in and asked a young female employee if I could come in to visit and admire the artwork on exhibit. Yes was the response. The gallery was hosting an event at the time; therefore, they were open later than usual. Curiosity got the best of me, as I enjoy art galleries. Certainly there are plenty of them in town for enjoyment and appreciation. Perhaps a walking tour of all these beautiful art galleries would enhance a person to learn a little more about Oakland and its history. (Visualization of the walk would start with this gallery and conclude with Sanchez Contemporary where one can sit and enjoy as the French would say "une cafe et un croissant, s'il vous plait." LOL.)
For me, it all started with Sanchez Contemporary, then the Joyce Gordon Gallery and Sole Space - galleries that I have visited within a few months of each other. All these galleries are located within walking distance of each other, stretching from Old Oakland to Downtown to Uptown. Two are on the main thoroughfare of Telegraph Avenue; one is on 14th Street; and this one, 9th Street.
The E14 Gallery is spacious and well lit. All the artwork and paintings are done by local artists. (This gallery must have recently opened, as there is one other review on this website.) The front part of the gallery is a gift shop, selling T-shirts, books, unique miniature items, etc. A corridor leading to the back of the gallery has more artwork, paintings, and photos by local artists mounted on the walls.
Finally, I agree with the person who did the FTR (first to review) that this gallery is cool and it has interesting art designs. As the wall mural on the Marriott says, visit Oakland. I say visit the art galleries mentioned above. They are all superb in what is being on display.
