“The World’s Greatest Hot Sandwich”? Not Even Close. We travel a lot and love trying new food spots — especially sandwich shops — so when we saw Earl of Sandwich at the Chesapeake House rest area, we decided to give it a shot. Big mistake. We ordered two of their “top” sandwiches, expecting something warm and delicious. Instead, we got one of the worst food experiences we’ve ever had. While waiting, I watched one of the kitchen staff drop what looked like a lime on the floor, pick it up, and keep using it. That should’ve been the sign to leave. When we finally got our order, the sandwiches had one slice of roast beef that was so tough it was literally unchewable. We ended up pulling the meat off and just eating the bread with condiments — and that was the best part of the meal. With a name like Earl of Sandwich and a slogan claiming to be “The World’s Greatest Hot Sandwich,” you’d expect some quality and pride in what they serve. Sadly, that was not the case. I later learned they even have a location in Disney World, which honestly shocked me. If this is the standard, something’s gone very wrong. This felt like a tourist trap, not a restaurant. Careless prep, low quality, and disappointing food from start to finish. Definitely not worth the stop — especially when there are so many great local sandwich shops elsewhere that actually care about what they serve.

Google
Came in as a truck stop and left really impressed. I ordered the roast beef, cheddar, and horseradish, with a tomato soup side. It was all very delicious. As i was waiting the gentleman working there let me know they slice all their own meat, home make their croutons and desserts - cookies and brownies. Well he sold me on a brownie and I didn’t regret it, it was amazing. Soup and sandwich was great too.

Google
This was my first time here , and it passed my standards:) Sandwich as good as it can get , clean store , service was also quite fast but I was the o oh customer in the whole center so don’t take this part of the feedback fair :) Presentation of the food is better then the food it self :)) saying that no complains at all , hey I just gave a 4 starts :) 6.99 for water is insane and yes I know it’s ebook water , same thing for the nestle purified water 3.99 is over priced In the other hand they ask for $5.99 for fountain drink and chips …. Again overpriced so I did not buy any drinks from here

Google
The store looked generally clean. The food was cooked immediately upon ordering and both the taste and packaging were good. However, the service was disappointing. Despite it being lunchtime, they had run out of the main ingredient, beef, but there was no indication of this, and when I finally placed my order, they informed me bluntly. It felt as though they were reluctantly taking orders, not really wanting to do business. Had I not been eager to try the food from this store for the first time, I probably would have given up on ordering.

Google
Stopped here to charge Tesla .. and came for a quick bite . Crowded as always . Slow service . Got a quick crack - Mac cheese and it was ok. Not the best but ok for a quick snack on our way . Service was slow … average experience

Google
They didn't have any roast beef and they only had honey mustard. At a sandwich shop. When I got my turkey bacon club it had ONE piece of turkey on it and like 8 bacon bits. It would have been a really tasty sandwich if it actually had enough ingredients on it. The bread was really soft and yummy but it was over $10 for a nothing sandwich. 0/10 will never recommend.

Google
Stopped at Chesapeake earl- very specific about my sandwich and not wanting the tuna hot. I order this all the time at other earls.,, paid for lettuce tomato- man said he had to heat bread for safety. Literally cooked entire thing no lettuce or tomato. Knew he was messing with me . He said yeah the did whatever he wanted. If he wasn’t going to make my sandwich that way he should have been honest and I would have not paid $16 for a disgusting sandwich. Disputing the charge

Arguing Amateurs G.

Google
Stood at the counter for about 4 minutes while the associates stood in the back on their phones just looking at us. Eventually our order was taken and then while waiting to receive order I watched what potentially looked like a female manager grope the male cook inappropriately. Quick but inappropriate. Choose this place out of the few restraunts in the rest plaza because it was the only one without a line. Now I know why.

Yelp
Sure. It's edible. Big plus at a roadside plaza place. But there's not much else to say. Service was slow and unfriendly. The sandwich wasn't particularly appetizing. Just meh. Definitely not the best sandwich in the world.
google avatar

Yelp
Only one person working . She was very quick and pleasant. I ordered the number 1 The full Montagu. Has great flavor but to me the roast beef is alittle to raw for me very chewy and pink

Michael O.

Yelp
If I could give it a zero, I would. We both ordered the roast beef and cheddar (the original) and the roast beef was barely edible. Some pieces we pulled out of the sandwich and couldn't tear them apart. Never coming back.
google avatar

Yelp
They were spray painting over the food prep station. Smelled very strong in the area.

Yelp
I was next to a Wendy's and kept thinking it would have been half the price and so much faster bc that's what my son ordered. After I ordered they forgot they didn't have Mac and cheese or soup because it seemed tooo much trouble they offered me another sandwich instead of doing the return. The food wasn't that good it was ok sorry not a fan.

Yelp
We stopped here after a while of driving and wife asked woman if the bread had seed and she said no . Sandwich came out and had seeds on the bread. Seven tho she brought us back and got a refund . Not sure why the woman does t know what bread comes with and without seeds. Food was great just that my wife has health issues and can't eat seeds.

Yelp
Omg !!!! At first I thought this place would be a bad experience...but no!!!!!! Great sandwiches and salads and competitive prices ... Front service is a little unfriendly but could be a tired or bad day!!!! Nevertheless the good food makes up for it!!!!

Yelp
Believe me, I have no illusions concerning rest stop dining but The Earl of Sandwich takes that culinary tradition to a new low. After ordering an "Earl's Club" I felt like Clara Peller screaming "Where's the beef?" Fourteen bucks for a pale tomato, wilted lettuce and a meat like substance that made me long for a bracing shot of veg-a-mite. Complete rip-off. On a happy note, my dog loved it. He gave it five paws.

Yelp
I think Earl of Sandwich is the best meal option when considering all the choices at both Chesapeake House and Maryland House. But, only stop by if you're okay with a wait. Their sandwiches always seem to take extra time to prepare, but, to be fair, they also involve more than just sticking some sad meat and cheese between bread. They can be intricate little creations. I've had a few sandwiches for both lunch and, more recently, breakfast, and they've all been tasty. I especially liked the ham and cheese. Basic, but so good! I would say maybe pass on their coffee. Mine tasted a bit burnt and their cups are small. Not worth it. I'll continue to stop at Earl of Sandwich when commuting on I-95. It's certainly convenient!

Yelp
Bottom Line: Serving fresh and warm sandwiches, Earl of Sandwich is the best dining Choice at the Chesapeake House Travel Plaza. BF has fond memories of eating Earl of Sandwich in a past life so for our recent Sunday Funday we made the trek up I-95 to check out this location within the fancy Chesapeake House Travel Plaza. Despite a long drive with some pricey tolls along the way I tried to keep my expectations in check and remain objective. We got two sandwiches, a bag of chips, two fountain sodas and a cookie. For sandwiches, he had the club while I had the roast beef. I'll admit, the sandwich was very delicious and I'm confident that Earl is serving more delicious chow than his neighbors - the Colonel, Wendy and Aunt Annie. Earl of Sandwich serves its own brand of chips which are kettle cooked, crispy and surprisingly addicting. The cookie was ok. All eateries in the travel plaza sell Coca-Cola products and the fountains are centrally located within the food court. I liked that they had my precious diet coke and it was easy to get a refill before heading back on the road.

Yelp
Ok here's the deal: the sandwich was 5 stars...just as good as Disney Marketplace. It's my fault I decided my husband and I would go on a "Sandwich Adventure" from Alexandria to the edge of Maryland. Almost two hours one way. We got there and just got one Ham and Swiss that we split, and we asked three employees how long they would be open and they gave multiple answers and they closed way earlier than any of them estimated so we couldn't get more sandwiches before we left to go home. Almost four hours round trip with 1/3 tank of gas and $16 in tolls to split a sandwich. No Regrets.

Yelp
I've been to Earl of Sandwich on numerous occasions (whenever we drive up I-95N) and it's always consistently AMAZING! I usually order the "Original 1762," but recently I've been branching out and ordering the delicious cup of tomato soup. Most recently, we stopped there and I ordered the "Full Montagu" sandwich, which consisted of roasted beef, turkey, Swiss, cheddar, lettuce, Roma tomato, and mustard sauce. Very delicious! My fiancé ordered something new as well - a seasonal Holiday Turkey sandwich, which came with turkey, cornbread stuffing, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce, and mayonnaise. He loved this and we were both delighted that Earl of Sandwich mixes it up for the holidays. I LOVE this place and it'll continue to be our go-to spot along I-95!

Yelp
On our way back to New York from DC, we opted for Earl of Sandwich sandwiches instead of the unhealthy alternatives available at Chesapeake House. We were two of us, each ordering our own sandwich, separately. We waited for someone else to order a sandwich, and then my companion placed and paid for her order. It was at this point that the two (or maybe three) employees behind the counter took on the job of making the first person's sandwich as well as my friend's whilst chatting between them. No one came to take my order, and we had to clear our throats and throw around some "excuse me"s before they realized there was still a line. Normally, that would make me dock many stars, but when I finally had my sandwich I had to admit that it was a good sandwich. The bread was crispy and soft in all the right places, the ingredients were surprisingly fresh for a rest area restaurant, and it was just delicious. I had the Full Montagu, full of cheddar, swiss, turkey, and a few other things. It was great. It hit the spot. It wasn't 40000 calories of grease and HFCS. In short, the service was slow and weird but the sandwich was damn good.

Yelp
A must stop for lunch while on 95. Great sandwiches that are warm and filling and a great staff. Kevin, who was working the register and making sandwiches, was a gem!

Yelp
I was skeptical. There was no one in the line and everyone else was lined up for Wendy's and KFC. I ordered the Original 1762 (roast beef; cheese, horseradish) and it was SO GOOD. This place is great. I don't understand how they did it. I don't care. It's the best roadside restaurant.

Yelp
Eh. This is an Earl's of Sandwich location inside of a rest stop along Interstate 95 so my expectations were low. I got the veggie sandwich without the feta nor the dressing. For $7.49, the sandwich was a bit small, but of course, remember that we are in price gouging land. Next time you go on a road trip, bring your own PB&J sandwiches with your own fresh-baked bread. I can tell the bread here is frozen, but of course, remember that they have to feed the masses. I like how America emphasizes health and nutrition, yet inside of this rest stop, I spot a Wendy's, Pizza Hut, Roy Rogers, Cinnabon, and KFC. The world is not vegan-friendly. The world does not provide enough healthy options. I couldn't purchase a banana anywhere, but I could purchase lots of foods made with cheese, cream, and bacon. No wonder why all of us are so fucking fat.

Yelp
Earl of Sandwich in Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Nevada. Used this sandwich shop 3 times for breakfast. The third time Earl showed his true colors Black and Blue because the staff likes to fight the customers in a brawl. I showed up bought two coffees and went to make them and found both big urns empty at 700am. I informed the staff and they told me it would be 8 minutes until coffee could be brewed. I was waiting and did not complain. Some assistant manager came out and I said you had an epic fail this morning as staff let both urns empty out. Keep in mind these urns probably hold 10 pots of coffee each and not check them every 15 minutes is a cardinal sin. She immediately busted my balls and threatened me to go somewhere else and she would call security on me. No oh so sorry or anything like that. I was at my Casino so I said no more. Shame because they serve $5.95 breakfast sandwiches and are a great value and taste great, but if you can't provide the coffee you should shutter the shop and go home. I will never eat at Earl of Sandwich again!

Yelp
Not bad for a rest stop restaurant, but overpriced. I had the bbq chicken sandwich. As far as I could see, they were the only restaurant making hot, fresh food on the spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Chesapeake House, new rest stop with lounge music, is almost too comfortable to leave. That will not be good for my trip, isn't it? Take the exit on the left to get in. There are Earl of Sandwich, countess Wendy, duke of Kentucky (fried chicken), lord of pizza (hut), and last but not least princess (auntie) Anne. The best of all, Peet's Coffee and Tea is here. Finally, they serve good coffee. They should have had free wifi and phone charging station and advertise as such on the billboard sign. I bet people will stop by like crazy and spend their money while waiting for the phone to be charged.

Yelp
Tasty roast beef sandwich and c hips. Also ,the vegetable sandwich was actually pretty good. Would totally return.

Leigh N.

Yelp
I was the only person in line on oct 27 around 1140am, the person behind the counter making the sandwiches said "I'll be back" to the cashier and left. They left the cashier by herself. Not really a problem except I got my sandwich 16 minutes later after she returned and started making sandwiches . I was the only person in line, so 16 minutes it ridiculous. In another note, my sandwich was delicious once I got it

Yelp
(4) ~ overall very good food & service...We recommend just the sandwiches, as the other side items were just ok -to- good. OUR MENU: ** Original 1762 Sandwich = (4) very good...love the crusty, but chewy Bread ** Turkey Holiday Sandwich = (4) very good...limited time option * Tomato Soup = (3.5) good * Potato Chips = (3.5) good * Chocolate Chip Cookie = (3.5) good * Triple Chocolate Brownie = (3.5) good...but too decadent * Coffee = (2.5) poor:(

Yelp
We stopped here off of I-95 on our way to New York. Nothing special about this location since it's at a rest stop but I'm giving it 5 stars since my sandwich was hot and fresh. The service was good, and everything seemed to be well maintained behind the counter. Wasn't crowded and so my sandwich was ready after about 7 mins which is not long to wait considering it needed to be prepared. I had the Earl's Club on wheat bread which consists of turkey, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and Earl's sauce. The sauce is like a thin sweet tomato mayo. I paid just under $8 for the roughly 6" sandwich alone, not bad at all, and they were generous with the meat. We're all satisfied with the choices here. I'd definitely eat here again.

Yelp
I really loved this place. I found their food to be really great. The breakfast sandwiches are awesome. Staff's friendly and proactive too. Thanks for making my day.

Yelp
Tried this place on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the Original 1762 light on the sauce. Wait time for my order was pushing 10 mins but it was worth the wait. The roast beef was thinly sliced and very tender. Bread was warm and fresh and held the contents perfectly. I requested a dab of horseradish it was creamy and didn't overpower the beef. Prices are slightly higher that it's neighboring fast food joints but it's worth it for the quality.

Yelp
Quick service, really good sandwich. Glad I passed on KFC & Wendys, very good call. Line was much shorter, that was a sign.

Yelp
Absolutely great sandwiches!!! Ordering may be confusing, but food is delicious!! Bread is tasty and well worth the money!!!

Yelp
Best rest stop food I've had. Excellent sandwich. Way, way better than Panera or Potbelly. I had the hot ham and cheese on whole wheat. Toasted. Cheesy. Yummy. Stopping back again on our way back from NY now. Yum.

Sridhar R.

Yelp
Get the Caribbean jerk chicken sandwich on whole wheat. Delicious! It is not on the menu

Yelp
Never saw so many employees doing so little or looking quite so unengaged. We waited a long time, but only needed to pay for fully prepared food, so I can't chalk the wait up to waiting for hot, fresh food. What we did get plenty of was attitude, though--I made the mistake of asking for croutons for my tomato soup (the only kind they sell, which is featured in overhead photos WITH croutons and was first told, "oh, we've been busy and didn't make them." When I pointed out that the photos all showed croutons atop the soup, one employee responded, "It doesn't come that way." Well, why the ---- does the photograph show croutons then? Skip Earl of Sandwich and try any one of the other fast food chains in the same site at Chesapeake House.
