"When it comes to high praise people tend to use unfamiliar terms to describe a good experience. A holiday was ‘out of this world’. A bowl of pasta, ‘unreal’. But although these descriptions are passionate, they’re also useless. Tell someone your trip was ‘similar to The Beach, but more chill’ and the spag bol was ‘like school dinners, only with flavour’, and they’ll get you. That’s because sometimes bringing things back to reality can be a good thing, and Earth Kitchen proves that. This all-day Dalston restaurant - attached to Hackney’s latest arts venue - serves familiar British food in a familiar feeling space, and is all the better for it. The bar area - all strip lighting, sofas, and droopy ferns - feels a bit like The Conran Shop, but with decks, and a kitchen serving up fresh soup and pasta throughout the day. It’s really quite nice. If you come here to work in the morning (it opens at 10am), or at lunchtime, you’ll likely still find yourself in one of their booths come late-afternoon. Whether or not you have a rarebit and bacon toastie for company is your choice. But if you don’t, well, that sucks for you. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Ideally you want to go to Earth Kitchen for dinner. The menu is bigger and the atmosphere is better. The food is from the St. John school of cookery: familiar, tasty, and unapologetically hearty. Dishes like braised squid with fennel and aioli, or ginger pudding with butterscotch sauce, are probably like things you’ve had before. They’re also probably better. Food-wise, nothing here is trying to be all-singing, all-dancing, because that’s what Earth’s arts space is for. Just remember that if your wild garlic soup starts rippling from the reverberation next door, that you’re still only in Dalston, not Jurassic Park. If you really want to, you can use this place to be peak #freelancer and nurse a coffee and some avocado on toast over a six hour period. Or, you can do it like us: stay throughout every meal - like an unwanted (and increasingly relaxed) plus one at a friend of a friend’s wedding - segwaying from croissant to lentils with goat’s curd to lemon sorbet, before being politely asked to leave. We’re not sure we recommend doing this. Though there is something comforting about a restaurant you can spend the whole day in. The most unfamiliar thing about Earth Kitchen is that it’s part of a venue, and that doesn’t tend to spell great-place-to-eat. But don’t let that, the shabby-ish exterior, or the queue of tinnies and smoke snaking around it put you off. Earth Kitchen is somewhere you want to get familiar with day and night. Food Rundown Wild Garlic Soup Ask us what our favourite season is and we’d be extremely tempted to go with wild garlic. This soup is very tasty. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Bacon and Rarebit Toastie Nothing quite says I’m ill and/or procrastinating with Bargain Hunt like a toastie and soup combo. This bacon and rarebit one is lovely on its own, and even better when dunked. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Braised Squid, Fennel, Aioli This reads simple, but we suspect it would end in us sobbing into a tea towel if we tried to recreate it at home. It’s some of the best cooked squid we’ve had in recent memory. Smoked Mackerel, Beetroot, Horseradish A whole smoked mackerel is a lovely thing and this one is no different. Brown Shrimp With Kohlrabi And Cucumber We love us a bit of shrimp, but these ones get a little lost in a jungle of kohlrabi. It’s still nice and fresh tasting though. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Pork Chop If you scan down a menu and see ‘pork chop’ you generally think: pork chop. Your heart doesn’t flutter and your mouth doesn’t uncontrollably salivate. But it should with this one. Earth Kitchen are pros at cooking chops, and meat in general. Braised Lamb And Chickpeas This lamb is more soft and tender than an emotionally volatile teenager listening to Bon Iver on the way home from ‘having a chat’ with the current love of their life. Basically, it’s really really good. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Lentils And Goat’s Curd The kind of dish that you might think of as strictly for the non-meat and fish eaters. No, no, no. If this was on an album, your annoying friend who’s into music would call it ‘a lowkey banger’. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Ginger Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce Feed us this for breakfast. Feed us this for lunch. Feed us this for dinner. Please, just continue to feed us this." - Jake Missing

A great venue, sound and sightlines are very good. Friendly staff and drinks not too bad, certainly not Academy prices. I don't get the negative reviews. Also some great bars and food close by.

Saw Dhani Harrison here (AMAZING). Was a little apprehensive having read reviews on accessibility- true, the venue does struggle due to the nature of building (beautifully semi derelict old cinema) but the staff were incredible. Very responsive and helpful, and gave me somewhere safe to store my scooter during the gig. 10/10 for warmth and flexibility in a tricky venue.

The worst concert venue we have ever experienced. The parts of the venue we visited were dingy, dark and dirty. The darkness helped to hide the awful state of paintwork in the theatre - masses of peeling paintwork to the walls and ceiling. The theatre was cold - we kept our coats, gloves and scarves on. There were only a small number of cushioned seats (we fortunately were able to grab a bench as we were amongst the first into the hall) in addition to a few rows of chairs near the stage. Most of the audience therefore had to sit/perch on wide wooden steps/platforms. Unbelievably, they could enhance their seating experience by HIRING cushions. Surely the most uncomfortable experience for the 2 hours or so of a concert. With the exception of a helpful doorman after the concert (Neil Cowley Trio) the staff seemed bored, disinterested and unwelcoming. In conclusion: the place needs to be cleaned, redecorated, properly heated and some staff training and supervision needs to be done.

The sound is great, generally there's always a reasonable place to sit and get a good viewpoint as the stage is high and no seats really suffer from restrictedviews. I have always found the staff super friendly. The seats are hard wood and this can be tough on the Butt, but there is a loan cushion vending machine. I must have seen 10+ gigs here and don't have any negatives except the theatre bars service is a bit slow due to only one person in each.

A disappointing experience. Accessibility was made to feel like an after thought. We couldn’t see anything the whole show. Security rudely spoke to us and moved us with no explanation to an even worse position. One security had concern that accessibility couldn’t see but he was outnumbered and security loudly argued throughout the openers. Really disappointing that this venue cannot appropriately accommodate accessibility we spent the whole concert feeling like we shouldn’t be there. The main woman dealing with accessibility really needs to work on her people skills. I was incredibly uncomfortable the entire night and wanted to leave but couldn’t as she’d backed me right into a corner with no easy way out. I’ve visited many similar venues across the uk and America never have I been made to feel as horrible as I did at this venue. Disabled individuals were made to feel like burdens. They had put absolutely no thought whatsoever into their accessible area. I wish I’d never gone. Sound was also terrible I could barely hear the artist I’d paid to see. That may well be due to the fact their “accessible” area was a corner behind speakers

Habibi Funk night seeing Roger Fakhr & The Scorpions, yesterday. Amazing sound. Really nice staff. Not too expensive. Great view of the acts. Lovely old theatre. Will be back.

So disappointing venue. There is an entrance fee which indicates that you will find real treasures. When you get there you realise it is just a overhyped venue . So dark inside you can’t see anything! Crawling with people and real claustrophobic. Soo expensive as well. You better get there early coz the queue is like 1,5 hours just to get in.

Fantastic place to enjoy music, with a stage the size of France! Lots of good vibes but best of all are the staff; whoever recruits deserves a pay rise as there’s always a brilliantly friendly welcome, especially at the bar🤩
