This Vintage 1950s Train Is Back for the First Time in a Decade — and You Can Ride It in the Northeast

"A historic train experience is making a comeback in Pennsylvania. The East Broad Top Railroad (EBT), located within the rolling hills and farmlands of central Pennsylvania, will turn on its engines once again on May 6. The 150-year-old railroad is the only surviving three-foot gauge common carrier railroad east of the Rocky Mountains and is considered by the Smithsonian to be one of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century American narrow gauge railroads." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We were there for the peanuts express and it was awesome! It was a great 20 minute ride to the pumpkin patch on a beautiful fall day! A great view of the mountains with such beautiful colors! Once on the train they gave a map of the pumpkin patch that showed everything to do! So much more than I imagined it would be. They had mini golf, pumpkin bowling, a hayride, pick your own pumpkin, food trucks, a football kicking contest, a bouncy house for the kids and of course… a picture with Charlie Brown and snoopy!! It was such a fun time I almost missed our train back! I highly recommend them and this excursion! Sooo much fun!

What a fantastic day this was, we did the Great Pumpkin Patch Express and it was such a lovely experience and time. The staff were excellent. The scenery was even more beautiful during the fall. This is a must see and do event check it out.

This place is amazing, a true time capsule with very caring and knowledgeable caretakers. Will definitely be back and looking forward to bringing the whole family, and taking more tours. Greatly looking forward to seeing this place restored to its former glory. It is quite a piece of history that should never be lost. Very enjoyable 10/10 would highly recommend.

We came up on a Tuesday. We watched and heard the train every day. Thursday we did the train ride for our anniversary. We also rode the trolley. I have cerebral palsy so I was very excited to learn they had ADA lifts and an ADA golf cart(this day driven John). John went above and beyond for my husband and I . We will definitely be back. We are addicted 💕

I’ve visited the place in August of 2011, and again in 2023, it’s changed so much. I still remember riding 15, and now 16. Can’t wait to ride the trains and tour the place again in 2025

Google
Amazing place for a fall train ride! Highly recommend trying out the caboose, there's seats up in the top! Also recommend purchasing the combo tickets to do the tour (very knowledgeable, close up), and trolley ride!

Went for the fall peanuts festivities, definitely worth it! Lots of stuff to do and enough time to do it all. The Kids loved it lots of fun!

Google
A cute little experience for train enthusiasts alike. The train ride was pretty short, and although the experience was fascinating, it could have been much better if there was a companion instructor talking about our experience. The cost was high, especially for children.

Yelp
We had a wonderful day full of train and trolley rides and tours. All the volunteers rock! They were so knowledgeable about not only the equipment and history, but the area as well. We'd like to thank Valerie for her wonderful dinner recommendation. We left our lunches in the car and were quite hungry when we left way past closing time. We'd love to return another day and maybe take time to picnic and pick flowers like we saw a young family do. Oh, and the bathrooms were pristine!

Yelp
The EBTRR is a pristine example of the industrial history of America. The hour-long ride through beautiful countryside is just about the right duration for adults and kids. A trolley ride and shop tour complement a ride behind a workingcsteam locomotive is comfortable early 20th Century passenger coaches.

Yelp
Nice day out with the family. You can buy tickets ahead on the website or at the starion. Little train museum and gift shopand there is a small trolley museum and gift shop. It was a nice one hour ride in a closed car. They have open cars and a caboose available as well. Beautiful scenic ride. I believe it will be absolutely gorgeous in the fall when the leaves are turning. Very small town with a few little diners and fast food places to eat. They do have a snack bar outside behind the station. They serve cheeseburgers, hotdogs cheesesteaks, french fries, canned soda and bottled water. Not too expensive. All kinds of things that the kids would like. Will definitely go back as it was a really nice day for the little ones.

Yelp
Back up and running. A must see. Lots to see and riding the steam engine will take you back in time. Christmas is the best time ever. All the decorations make it a wonderful family event!

Yelp
Such a fun place to go with the kids. We did the Christmas train. We also love riding the Rockhill Trolly (especially the fall Trolly).

Yelp
A wonderful narrow gauge railroad. Set aside time to take a tour of the grounds (machine shop and roundhouse) with a docent. As an added incentive, this railroad is on the National Register of Historic Places. Also note that next door is the Rockhill Trolley Museum. Note that the future of the railroad is in question as of the 2011 season.

Yelp
This is a great little place to go on the weekend. it has train rides up and down the aughwick valley for only 12 dollars per person, for adults or 8 dollars per child. we went here on a field trip when i was a little kid and i still go back every year. the Orbisonia train station offers plenty of parking and things to do.

Yelp
This really is a great little piece of history, complete with a roundhouse, steam, coal and diesel trains pretty much in their original state.

Yelp
If you want to go back in time, check out the East Broad Top RR in Orbisonia, PA. I didn't even know about it until our neighbor asked us to go there. It's only about 1 1/2 hours from our house. The place has seem better days and needs some work. I'm sure the fare for the train ride doesn't begin to cover the up-keep of the place. They take donations volunteers to fix up the place... they have lots to do. We rode in the covered train car which dates back to the 1880s and it's in remarkably good shape for its age. Most enjoyable was a "private" tour of the yard, given my a volunteer. We were the only people on the tour and we got to climb up on one of the old engines and ask as many questions as we wanted. Really learned a lot about trains! A GREAT place to take kids (you can ride to the end of the line and picnic and catch the next train back), however, I don't think they do school tours any longer. There is also a living trolley museum to ride!
