How a Chinese Barbecue Master Has Been Roasting Whole Pigs for 30 Years | Eater

"At this popular Toronto barbecue shop, chef-owner Jack Tsoi has spent 20–30 years perfecting the labor-intensive craft of Chinese-style roast pig, turning out as many as ten whole pigs a day. He and his apprentice Clarence Kwan follow a meticulous process—balancing shoulder and ham when butchering, boiling the meat to shrink the skin, drying and salting it overnight, torching off hairs, hanging the carcass on a retractable beam, then carefully sliding it in and out of the oven during the first half hour to manage bubbling and charring and to poke and brush the skin—before allowing the remainder of the roast to bake uninterrupted. Finishing requires expert chopping, producing a satisfying crunch as the knife slices through crispy skin and juicy meat. The finished product is served to lunch- and dinner-time crowds over rice, in sweet-and-sour sauce, or as char siu, and is prized for its even, crispy skin and juicy interior." - Terri Ciccone

Google
Got 1 soya sauce chicken for $20 and slightly more than 1 lb of cha siu for $13.50, which works out to around $38 when 13% HST is included. Note that it's cash only (though ordering through other online platforms is available). It's a hole in the wall type of take out restaurant specializing in Chinese and Filipino BBQ meat. Nothing fancy. I probably should have asked for thinner slices of pork. Sauce is included.

Google
I always stop here for the combo C when I'm in Toronto. It's the best chinese BBQ you will ever have. I'm very impressed with the food quality and flavour. Highly recommend. I think about this place often.

Google
We saw this place on an Eater video on YouTube, so decided to give it a try. We ordered the following: 1. Sweet and sour pork (Lots of meat, but no crispiness). 2. BBQ pork (Very dry, although we ordered extra sauce, it didn't help much). 3. Tofu (Very salty) 4. Farm chicken Had high hopes for this place, but we were disappointed on the quality, and the taste.

Google
I heard lots of positive reviews about this spot. I asked for a pound which is $14/lbs I ended up with $22 worth of roasted pork 🤦🏻‍♀️ I did read a few reviews with the same occurrence. Super disappointed as the pork is super crispy and delicious but in all transparency living between Markham and Scarborough- I could have had similar if not better and cheaper roasted pork elsewhere. For that- I will not be returning. Kinda cheesed to be honest.

Google
Small place, good for take out only. We ordered pork bbq, crispy pork and fried tofu in garlic sauce. Good servings and affordable compared to other Chinese restaurant. All we got tasted so good! We’re so excited to taste it but the tasting supposedly ended up to eating on our way home. Good thing it’s more than enough for the 3 of us. Our first time here and definitely will come back again soon.

One of Scarborough’s long standing institutions. 🙌🏼 I will always love their bbq pork, crispy pork/roast pork, and roast duck. It’s just sooooo good and it’s exactly what you want when you order it. Plus! Their prices are so affordable. This has obviously been on our “favourites list” since forever. For some reason, I don’t have any photo of their bbq They only accept cash so come prepared. And this is a primarily a take out place. There’s like 2 seats but believe me, you’d rather eat it at home. We also tried their fried chicken and fried rice platter (small). This was also very delicious! Make sure to bring a box tray with you when you pick up platters. They will come in foil trays but they’re really hot so best to bring a box with you.

Google
Got the 3 meat combo and it tasted pretty good but I've had better bbq pork and duck else where. It comes with ginger scallion sauce which I love. The meal was $13 and this place only takes cash.

Google
This is my second time ordering a full pig from here and I was satisfied on all fronts. I paid $280 for a medium pig but I feel like it was on the larger side. The service was phenomenal and incredibly friendly - the owner recognized me from when I ordered the first time two years ago. The flavour was fantastic. The presentation was impressive. I've only ordered a whole pig on one other occasion from a place in Chinatown so I don't have much to compare to in terms of price, but I was thoroughly satisfied with the quality of service and meat. My guests were impressed with both the size and taste of the pig. It was devoured.

Yelp
Some of the best bbq pork I have ever had and I have had my fair share all over the world. Portion was big, price was solid as well. The rice and sauce were great too. I also tried the roast duck and could have been an off day but it was a bit cold and didn't taste great. Probably a lot better if it's fresh. Overall amazing place, I will be back for the bbq pork and will try some other things as well as the crispy pork as it looks amazing and will give the duck another try if it looks fresh.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese BBQ I've had in my life. It's just basically a counter with a selection of classic Chinese BBQs items. No ambiance to speak of but just classic cuts but friendly service and great food. Also the prices are very reasonable Recommended.

Yelp
Having read great reviews of this Scarborough institution, I was looking forward to a pleasant encounter. The parking here is a little tight but be patient and you will find one. Went in for lunch (1:15pm) and saw a small bar stool setup for in restaurant dining which is a big plus. Mike was busy in the back prepping the afternoon/ evening cook and was served by the assistant. I ordered my usual goto of BBQ Pork and duck and was provided for just under $10.00. There was no complimentary soup but that is unimportant as it's the BBQ I am there for. I opened the box to find a very fatty BBQ pork and leftover pieces of duck (neck and butt) combined to fill the box. I gave the benefit of the doubt and gave it a try and gave up after a few bites. I maybe a little biased after frequenting my regular York Region shops....

Yelp
Poor or little choice of BBQ MEATS at 5pm. Leftover of the day. Cash only no credit or debit taken.

Yelp
So fresh, tender char siu. Nicely flavored! Enthusiastic store owners / bbq chefs. The chicken is a bit salty, as is the ginger scallion sauce accompanying the chicken. But it's still worth it! Would totally return.

Yelp
This IS the place for bbq pork, roast pork and duck. The owner Jack Tsoi, has been serving up high quality meats, perfectly roasted, for more than 30 years! We used to visit his former location at Sheppard Avenue East and Glen Watford Drive, before he moved to 4400 Sheppard Avenue East. The hard work and pride that goes into these specialty meats shows - the meats are succulent, salty and perfectly crispy. The skin on the roast pork and duck is absolutely addictive! I normally order lunch boxes, but decided to splurge and get a pound each of bbq pork, roast pork and half a duck. I like to chop it myself at home, and the meats were nicely wrapped. The leftovers are excellent for making fried rice, or adding to homemade noodle soup! Roasted whole pigs/lechón are very popular, and an excellent choice for ceremonies and parties; ranging in size from baby (25-35 lbs) to medium (40-90 lbs). They also serve Filipino dishes, and Sweet & Sour Pork, which is one of my childhood favorite dishes. I don't know why I haven't tried their version yet?! What is interesting and amazing to note is how friendly the staff are. Each time I have called or visited, the interactions have been professional, courteous and appreciative. Chef Jack is always pleasant, and he is never in a rush to chat. He refers to me as his "old" customer, so this is the only time I don't mind being called old ... lol So many reasons to support local owned businesses, like this one! Notes: * Plaza tends to get busy and parking spots are tight * Cash only * Closed on Wednesdays

Yelp
I totally came here because I saw that recent Eater video that came out about this place. It was really neat to see all that goes in to preparing the BBQ that comes here - it gives you a new level of appreciation for the knowledge and practice that goes in to it. Needless to say it was like seeing a celebrity when I saw chef Tsoi in person! I feel like at a lot of restaurants you rarely get to see the head chef doing day to day things but he was there taking orders and chopping up BBQ! You could kind of peek into the kitchen and see the other chefs working with the other product as well. It's a very small shop that is mostly made up of the BBQ and hot food counter. They offer party trays of fried goodies and of course their famous whole roasted pigs. We bought a lot to try that day - a roast duck, some cha siu, a bit of roast pork, and the sweet and sour pork. The roast pork was an easy slam dunk. It's so rare that I can hear other people crunching away on the skin but that's how crisp it was! Somehow the meat under that was insanely tender and juicy as well. Another observation was that I often find that the meat itself lacks flavour but they somehow got the salty taste to permeate from the inside of the pork out. It was incredible. So my favourite BBQ meat is duck. They did an amazing job on this one too. Again the skin and the meat both had a lot of flavour. My favourite pieces are usually the back pieces because they normally have the most skin but I found that even the big meaty ones were able to soak up a lot of flavour. There was a lot of sauce in the bottom of the container it came in, so maybe that helped with it as well. I thought that the sweet and sour pork was balanced really well. It wasn't just sweet - there was a hit of salt in it that accentuated the taste of the meat. I also liked the cha siu but it took a backseat to everything else. All in all a pretty amazing place that I would most definitely order roast pork from again.

Yelp
Walk inside an establishment like East Court and Mike's BBQ and you'll see glistening roasted carcasses hanging from a stainless-steel wall. It's a sobering moment that reminds you of what you're eating. If you're a vegetarian, wait in the car. Chinese barbeque pork or cha shiu ($8.99 per lb) is probably the most widely known form of siu mei and is the dish I loved as a child. The easiest to eat, since there are no bones, it's flavoured with a youth-friendly slightly sweet glaze, it's the dish I must try at every shop. Requesting a "half fat half lean" piece, the cut is a little oily when eaten on its own, but once mixed with hot rice, is oh so delicious as the fat melts into the grains. Plus, the roasted pork is much moister. I enjoyed East Court's thicker cuts - when you place a slice in your mouth, you get a lovely meaty bite that's a bit like steak. Their glaze has a balanced sweetness and was applied generously but not so thick that it tastes like it's dipped in corn syrup. The roasted duck ($11 for half) was cut nicely, each piece roughly the same thickness and so deftly prepared that it easily reforms the animal's shape in the container. This was also nicely marinated, so it didn't require plum sauce, the duck juices enough to satisfy providing a wonderful savoury star anise taste. For a smaller portion of fowl, their barbeque chicken legs ($3 each; two shown in the picture) is a great add on. These are glazed with a thinner version of the cha shiu sauce giving it a little bit of sweetness. Of course, the ginger and green onion oil will completely change the flavours of the dish and is such a great condiment with chicken.

Yelp
We visited this store as a plan B when our usual go to (Lung Tung) had ran out of duck and my daughter had a serious craving. We went based on the Google review and although the owners were lovely and food was disappointing. The roast pork was too dry and the crackling was not crunchy. The duck was also more dry than we were used to but still ok. The accompanying cabbage side was delicious though. The braised garlic tofu was ok as well. Not sure if we would return for their BBQ but maybe I will come back for the tofu and veggies.

Yelp
Cantonese roast pork was pretty good - light crisp skin with moist, tasty meat, though it was a touch salty. Lechon (Filipino roast pork) wasn't that good - the skin was a bit plasticy, though the taste was decent. It was also cut poorly - it was the boniest lechon I'd ever had.

Yelp
During this extended pandemic, many business have struggled but the take out scene has been strong for others. Chinese BBQ fits the latter. East Court BBQ is becoming a well know Scarborough joint that service fantastic traditional Chinese BBQ such as BBQ Pork, Roast Duck,, Soya Sauce Chicken and of course the Roast Pork! I ordered a a double piggy Roast Pork and BBQ Pork and it was as promised. Tender, succulent and of course crispy skin! The side cabbage veggie side was the best veggie side I had at a Chinese BBQ ever! 4/5 for a fantastic Chinese BBQ joint!!

J L.

Yelp
Best Chinese bbq I've ever eaten. I would recommend to anyone in the area. Next trip to Canada I will be returning to East Court.

Yelp
If you're in Scarborough area, gotta try this Chinese & Filipino BBQ place. My go-to order always the roast pork and Bbq pork. The pork skin is so crispy! Bbq pork is perfect and I like the ginger garlic sauce (the more the merrier) And I've been craving for a delicious Sweet & Sour Pork, this place IS THE BEST!!! The next day, my bf already wanted to stop by again to buy the sweet & sour pork If you haven't try, you should!

Yelp
While the owner is super friendly and nice, the duck was less than impressive, even though it was fresh from the oven. There wasn't a whole lot of meat on it and it was rather dry. I prefer BBQ duck from Mr. Congee in Richmond Hill.
google avatar

Yelp
Siu yook was good. Reminds me of Hong Kong. Too bad they gave me more bones and not a lot of "premium" cut. Roast duck was good also. All-in-all, taste buds were happy.

Yelp
I have not been here in several years. My first experience wasn't great, the food was mediocre. I thought I give it a try since I was.in the neighborhood again. The food has not changed much, it's still mediocre. I want to point out the reason I gave it a one star. It's to due to hygiene. The chef asked me what I wanted, I told him I wanted BBQ Pork and Roasted Pig. He had a blue glove on his left hand which is his cutting hand. He had no glove on his right hand which is hiw he hold the meat while he is cutting whatever. After he placed everything in the Styrofoam container, he asked me for the money. He used his right hand to make change and he went on to serve the next customer. After I went to my car, I looked at the container. The meat wasn't properly placed and he put Ginger green onions on top of my meat. This is not even the right sauce to use. I found it disgusting. It felt like a little kid cut my meat. After thinking some more, I decided to throw it out. I don't trust the chef at all. Eventhough it's Covid or not, that is not the way to serve your food. I am not sure they have Food Handling certificate. I will never go back there. Instead I will go to two other places which are very close. One is at Midland and Sheppard, inside the food court and the other one is at Glen Watford and Sheppard, inside the food court as well. They taste much better and o know my food is not contaminated.

Yelp
Conveniently located uptown, Jack Tsoi's bbq meats are addictively delicious. I always get the two or three-combo lunch box, with roast duck, roast pork, and/or bbq pork. The meats are nicely seasoned, with the perfect char. Jack is always welcoming, appreciative, and takes the time to chat. I keep saying I'm going to try the sweet & sour pork, but I always end up getting my favorite meat combos! Next time, next time ... haha! It's always a pleasant experience each time I stop by!

Yelp
Great food and amazing services. The stars here are the roast pork and roast duck. So flavourful and tender! Do note that the flavour profile here is more on the salty and briny side rather than sweet, which i really appreciate. Jack was very sweet and he always asked if you want to top up the vegetable (for free). Super reasonable price for the portion. You can check out the very nice Chinese pastry store next door as well.

Yelp
Mike, I am so Sorry! I don't think it will work out for us and there is not going to be a second date ever! Your BBQ Pork and Roasted Duck with Rice ($5) was one of the worse Chinese BBQ I had! I know, it is just suppose to be a cheap date, I am expecting too much for $5 tax in lunch date that includes a daily soup and you even throw in some tofu.... The rice was not hot... it was not cooked freshly! BBQ Pork was like this orange colour with no taste at all! The gravy on top was like a mushy filmed formed on top of pork and duck! BTW, you are also such a bad dresser in need of a bath! Sticky floors, dirty tables.... I took off in the middle of our date, not because I have an emergency! I just can't do it!! Bye! Please don't text, email or bbm me EVER!

Yelp
i west thereand had the most awesome bbq. I really like using my smoker but, for asian bbq ,It was delicious. even better than the scarborough rib fest, which is so over priced. this will be be my new place for bbg pork ,roast pork and . oh yeah duck is delicious. OMG. keep up the good work Mike, you are awesome!!!!!! gerry scarborough

Yelp
We ordered the roasted pork, duck and bbq pork. All three meats were very dry. I dont know if it was because we ordered an hour before closing, that the meat dried out all day. We gave this place a try as it was closer to home, but we will be going back to our usual Ho Ho BBQ for Chinese bbq next time.

Yelp
This place is definitely a great place to eat. I got a combo with three types of meat. It was delicious and came at a great price with a ton of food. It was cooked great and was delicious. The lady there was nice enough, I would love to go back here again, I liked the food. I highly recommend.

Yelp
I used to drive to Highway 7, Richmond Hill for good Chinese BBQ, but found this place a few months ago (a few doors from former Won Ton Chai - with new name, but won tons great as usual). The owner Mr. Tsoi (pronounced Choy) and Jenny very accommodating and nice. The first time I had their BBQ pork, it was less salty than other places, which I really appreciate. Their BBQ duck, BBQ pig, tofu, steamed free range chicken with ginger and green onion sauce very good as well. Prices for everything in GTA gone up, but their prices are very reasonable, it is now my go to place for Chinese BBQ, i recommend them to friends, and wish them continued success.

Ken W.

Yelp
Don't go at closing time. The meat has been sitting there for a few hours unless it is the weekend when they sell a lot more. Please remember the best cuts are the middle ribs. The butts are just that, butts. very crunchy skills but very dry. I like the char siu also. this is not supermarket BBQ pricing. but still has good value. Remember when you buy the box combos, most places do not offer the same cuts of meat if you buy by the pound.

Yelp
East Court is a real one, very legit authentic Hong Kong / southern China style Chinese BBQ. Owner is super friendly and generous, lunchboxes are a steal at $7-8 bucks a box!

Yelp
I love this spot, incredible food for a very very cheap price, especially for Toronto. Highly recommend checking it out, there's a whole youtube video about the food they make here!

Yelp
I'm a sucker for Asian BBQ. This has got to be one of the best places in all of North America (Canada and United States) for Chinese bbq. I've had the char siu, crispy pig, soy sauce chicken, and even the sweet and sour pork. I make sure to come here every time I come to T-dot. My mouth is watering just thinking about this place. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I was looking for Lechon for my Mom's 60th Bday and BlogTO just posted Places to get Lechon in Toronto. http://www.blogto.com/eat_drink/2012/03/9_places_to_get_filipino-style_lechon_in_toronto/ Having tried most of the places on the list, one caught my eye; Mikes BBQ. For some reason it got poor reviews here but since it was on BlogTO, I thought I'd give it a chance. Jack (owner?) greeted me with a huge warm Hello. He stopped what he was doing, grabbed a chair and sat with me. Even though the kitchen looked busy, he stopped everything to cater to me. Excellent customer service! - to top it off, he gave me a healthy sample of his charshiu(spelling?) which was to my high satisfactions. My Order: Lechon, Chicken Wings, Mixed Vegetables, Lumpia(spring rolls) - All Large orders in trays. Lechon - VERY WELL PRICED!! About $200 for a large Lechon. That's a good 30-40% off the competition. *Deposit may be required* Taste - You can order the standard shiney skin but I went with the BlogTO recommendation and ordered Crispy style(Chicharon-skin). Well cooked, moist, and crispy skin. I couldn't be more satisfied. Chicken Wings - These are CRISPY AF!!(in a good way) Delicious and moist on the inside with a niiiiice crunch on the exterior. This will be my go to place for party wings aswell. Mixed Veggies - No complaints. Standard veggies, delicious. Lumpia - no complaints either. Delicious and crispy, although I think this is ordered in, don't quote me, I'm not 100% sure. Ask for red dipping sauce which he makes on the spot. OVERALL, I'm very satisfied and will be a repeat customer. Be good to Jack. He's a good man, business owner, cook, and only aims to please his customers. Only downside is the tight parking lot. Aim for midday-early evening pickup to avoid parking lot disasters and no parking.

Yelp
Came here for some Chinese BBQ. It was around 7:00pm and I think they were going to close soon. They did not have too much meat left but still good enough for several more customers. Tried their roast pork and BBQ porkwith rice for $7.35 tax in. The portions were really generous. There was almost more meat than rice. Quality is a bit on the lower end though. BBQ pork had lots of fat and was not as lean as I would like. The roast pork was a bit more lean. The skin on the roast pork was a bit stale but it was near closing time so I can't complain. The way they handle the meat was really nasty here. They grab the meat with their bare hands, chop up the meat and place it into your dish. I even witnessed them drop some meat on the counter and put it right into the meal. Nasty! There are two little tables inside but I do not know who in their right mind would eat right there. Everything was just poorly done and even the presentation was terrible. Its like they threw a pile of meat on top of the rice. I'm not expecting much but when compared to Chinese BBQ places like Lung Tung BBQ Food then its a world of a difference in taste, quality and presentation. Plus its the same price too. Don't think I will return.

Azn N.

Yelp
Owner is cheap AF and waaay overpriced. Went in the first time and it was mostly rice and little meat. Just for a char sui or roast pork rice box cost $9. That's $3 dollars over the average in Toronto and it's NOT worth it. This is NOT a high class joint folks. Just an average BBQ on a strip plaza in lower end Scarborough (east Toronto borough). Went in 2nd time figured maybe he was busy first time and running out of stock. NOPE, 2nd time just as bad. I noticed he just got new batch of char sui out of the oven. Exactly the type I was expecting for my order. I asked him if I could have that batch. Ignored me and cut tail ends that are fatty and little meat. 2 bad experiences. Appears you can only get the good cuts if you buy by the pound. Horrid service!! Not going back. Better cut rice boxes at other similar BBQ stalls in Toronto for less cost.

Scott P.

Yelp
Amazing food! Everything is excellent and Jack is a true master of this craft. Every time I go (which is weekly) I am always greeted with a smile and a conversation. No one cooks a pig like Jack from crispy roasted pork, BBQ pork and sweet and sour pork. There is also soy chicken, roasted duck and other delicious entrees to chose from. Dishes come with rice and most plates are under ten bucks! If you are looking for the best bbq in the city just go to Eat Court & Mikes BBQ and let Jack fill your belly! So good!

CHi C.

Yelp
Not sure where to start - quality or value - as both are excellent. This family owned restaurant has the best roast pork I've ever tried. So good in fact that I am contemplating quitting my job to learn how he does it so well (if you're worried about the fat, cut out the fat and just eat the skin and the meat - the skin is to die for). I'm not a big cha siu guy, but theirs is very good as well. The duck is also solid. But that roast pork, man, it's going to be on the menu for my last meal.
