East Detroit Bakery & Deli

I’m embarrassed I’ve lived here over a year now and I’ve never stopped in. I had to change that. I was pleasantly surprised to see the selection of goods. They offer Kowalski products on sandwiches, they have a large assortment of baked goods, desserts & breads. I have been eating their bread for almost a year now as they bake it fresh for Salvatore’s on Gratiot. So delicious. The desserts are priced well, we snagged a few things, I think it was 4 dollars an item. I just stuck my toes in the water but we will definitely be back. Thank you EDB&D.

Absolutely love this bakery! They have great selections. Huge selections of many type of treats, fresh made donuts and breads. And did I mention that they also have Italian subs for a really good price? Customer service is great greeted with a smile every time. Always willing to help . Reasonable prices must stop by and check them out.

This is an old-school bakery, where everything is made from scratch. They have a huge variety of baked goods. They also have a deli counter with meats and cheeses. You can also pick up milk and cream in the dairy case. I’ve been going there over 30 years and I have never been disappointed.

This bakery is such a delight. I enjoyed the strawberry iced doughnut and I saw so many items I must go back and try. Thank you for the awesome service.

Had a paczki for the first time, specifically 1 Strawberry Shortcake & 1 Cassata—impressed is an understatement. The pastry case selection is vast and everything looks delicious. Looking forward to coming back and trying the other desserts!

One of the last places you can still get a loaf of Buttermilk Rye bread with the original style black seeds on the bread. Everything else is wonderful too. They've been in business over 40 years and have stayed true to quality. Some things are a little more expensive but worth it. I would rate it better than Hamtramck. When we lived in East Detroit we would always go there, then we moved far away and stopped. I was recently down there and stopped back in and was sure glad I did. Have been going back about every two weeks. Well worth the drive.

⸻ I recently went to a local bakery, and it was amazing! The place smelled so good the second I walked in, and everything looked fresh and homemade. I tried their cupcakes and cookies, and they were soft, sweet, and full of flavor. The workers were really friendly and helped me pick out what to try. The bakery was clean, cozy, and had a warm feeling that made me want to stay longer. I could tell they really care about what they make. I would definitely go back again and recommend this place to anyone who loves fresh, delicious baked goods.❤️❤️❤️❤️

It was really strange because when I went in there.They were spraying with windex the glass windows? Where the food was in I was so upset about that cause I felt that if they're closed, and that's okay. The problem I had I wanted to go to the Deli. First I watched a lady that had 2 blue gloves on. She didn't take them off. Wash your hands thoroughly and then put a new set of gloves on. Instead, She only put one clear glove on over the other one. Easy for pathogens to go into my food. I told her I didn't want the Deli. She goes, why not I stated; I'm good there. And she goes no, no, I'll get it. But I again said no no, I'm good their. When I realized after I got the Cupcakes, I'm like, do I even really want to eat them? The only way you want to do good business. Is don't be doing things Half ass if you do, people are going to see it. And although you're a very good bakery, you do a lot of business. But if word gets around, and they see you're doing what i'm saying; People are gonna think twice because they don't want stuff in their food. Or to ensure if you're doing that well, what are you doing behind closed doors with the food? Other people that don't care, they'll keep coming back. I Was quite concerned, and others disappointed that that's how they followed unfortunate protocol, because that's not the protocol you follow the proper thing would have been take them gloves off say, I'll be with you in a second. Wash your hands and then put a new set of gloves on. That's what you should have done.

For every single birthday in my family we get a cake from here. My personal favorite is the bumpy cake but it's all so tasty. The best way I can describe it is that it is the best cake I have ever eaten, with moist cake, fluffy frosting and surprisingly not even overwhelmingly sweet. The worker always help us find what we need quickly. There is also other stuff in the store that I personally have not tried but people rave about it. The cakes are so beautiful and are decorated great. Love this place!

This bakery is just a local treasure that I love to visit for the best freshly baked Italian bread and their huge selection of cheesecake by the slice. Personally I'd highly recommend the baked cheesecake and the key lime cheesecake. Call before going for a loaf of their Italian bread, because they can't keep it on the shelves.

A friend of mine suggested this place for their bake goods. This place is fantastic. They have everything you can imagine from breads, cakes, donuts and also has a great deli. You have to check it out, you won't be disappointed.

First of all, the customer service skills that the employee showed were absolutely amazing. I asked questions about what products they had an she patiently and knowledgeably answered every question. Overall, this bakery overloads your senses with delicious looking choices. There are beautiful cakes and pastries in the display cases in addition to a full case of deli meats and cheeses to choose from. We walked in to buy a couple of donuts and walked out with a dozen. Great donuts and incredible service. My only regret? Not knowing the name of the fantastic employee who helped us. I guess we'll have to take another trip!

It makes me sad to say this because this place has been where my family has gone for decades but I'm over it. Every birthday, event and Paczki day we have gone here. The cakes are amazing in taste and display every-time, the other food and desert options are also great and the place is clean BUT none of this excuses the utter rudeness that they display to their customers. I kept shrugging it off due to the quality of their products but no one wants to be repeatedly treated so rudely just for a desert. If you are happy to be treated like an actual bother with snappy remarks, eye-rolls and being hung up on then go here, if not I suggest to try elsewhere.

My husband grew up in the area. This is his favorite bakery for freshly baked items and subs.

A great hometown bakery. It is clean and always has a lot of options available. If there is a downfall to this bakery it is the fact that they run out of white bread that can be cut thick. When they have a few loaves left they slice them thin.

We are already fans of EDB but my husband wanted to get fresh subs for the game tonight and called to see if they had them. We ordered 3 and my Goodness they were amazing! Fresh, delicious, affordable and the bread-can't wait to try them again -highly recommended!

I haven't tried any of the desserts but the only reason why I went to East Detroit Bakery was for its cheese bread. The Jalapeño Cheddar Bread is amazing. I will have to return to try all the different varieties of cheese bread that this bakery offers. The bakery offers cheese bread only on the weekend. I visited on Saturday morning and the bread was freshly baked and still warm. I dug in immediately and there are jalapeño and cheddar throughout the entire loaf. So good and flavorful, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The loaf is huge and costs $4.50, cheaper and tastier than what you will find at most supermarket bakeries. Service was orderly (pick a ticket when you enter) and friendly. My bread was placed in a box and I was given a bag and twist tie for leftovers. Yes, yes, yes, I will be back for some of the best bread I've had in a long while.

It could be because I am so hungry, but I was so craving some baked food items this afternoon. Their Angel wings and their cinnamon bread looks so good. Will be good for a dessert after a proper meal, of course. There's a dispenser to the right when you enter to grab a ticket number for ordering any items behind the counter. They have a small deli section to the far right. They have large baked pastries goods, cheesecake, cakes, all sorts of arrears and varieties of pastries in the displays. They have the angel wings and little walnut and pecan cookies. Of course I have a large assortment of Christmas cookies for the holidays. They have donuts behind the counter on the back shelf as well as some baked bread. They even have a section of refrigerated milk and dairy products on the left wall, in case you want to have any treats immediately and some beverage to go. The service here is pretty quick and efficient. And pick up your order and then check out to the far left of the counter. All the staff here are wearing masks. Some are less friendly than others, but it looks like it's a place. My three items that I bought today attitude about $11. I bought a loaf of the cinnamon bread with the glaze on top, a packet of the angel wings as well as a apple fritter. The Apple fritter had a nice outside crunch to it and slight sweetness from the glaze. There's little bits of apples here and there, sparse, but still overall taste is good. Do I even dare to try the angel wings in the car and have a nice dusting and powdering of white confectionery sugar all over my car? Why not. I feel the need and pull to at least try a bite. The angel wing dough is light and airy, it's quite nice. I grabbed a batch that had a nice confectionery covering all over every piece. It's quite good. I think I understand why this place is so popular and crowded now.

Can't even count all of the dessert options they offer. Never disappointed and they have been my go to place for specialty cakes for years. Great staff and you feel like you're walking into dessert heaven.

I love this place but it seems like the prices have gone up and a few of the customers are ghetto and loud (no one wants to hear your conversation when you talking step to the side)

They have the best baked goods you should go there and try there baked goods. There cheesecake slices are to die for.

I have been a frequent customer of the east Detroit bakery for years,that being said, I do not frequent this establishment any longer!!! The cannolis are refrigerated and then soggy when I buy them (main reason I go) but the truth is they are just alright and then add on the rude staff and service now why bother going I'd rather make the trip down to Greektown and go to Astoria!!!

Picked up a German Chocolate cake today for a work birthday party. It was great. Everyone loved it, especially the birthday guy! The "cake lady" made it first thing this morning and it was incredibly fresh and tasty.

Well Covid has not stopped this generational family run bakery since 1948. What are you waiting for America ? Have a donut or a loaf of bread ! Does not get better. All the freshest Deli meats and pasta salads as well.

Options, options, options the choices you have at this place is wonderful. Me & My Daughter love coming here, we was in the area today, I was surprised she didn't say anything, well I guess we have tomorrow tho.

This is a fabulous bakery with a large selection and personable staff. I love their nutty donuts with a fresh cup of coffee, which they also have. Their deli section is just as nicely displayed and convenient for the Sunday shopper like me.

Every time my mom and I step in this Bakery there's always 4 or 5 female employees working with their aprons on. They are always happy to see my Mom and they can always answer her many lunchmeat or bakery questions. Today "Alex" was happy and cheerful to explain the different mini danish or turnovers to my mom for her to try instead of a big coffee cake. My Mom bought one apple and one Cherry. Then she decided on a Walnut and raisin "bear claw" which is like a mini coffee cake. ( forgot to take photos sorry), and a almond mini "bear claw". The floors are very clean upon walking in and around the bakery and the glass counters are spotless. No need to pick a number and wait in line. The 4 or 5 ladies working, take turns to box up or bag up one's bakery choices quickly. When I asked Alex she told me there's 3 Bakers in the back and they start baking at 4 a.m. and work throughout the day with fresh hot bakery items or pre-orders. The doors open at 6 a.m. and close at 8pm. A good Bakery is very hard to find in my Mom's neighborhood, whether Saint Clair Shores, Roseville, Grosse Pointe so East Detroit is #1.. I highly recommend this Bakery. MAKE the effort, Make the drive for your sugar craving, special party or special occasion. You'll be happy you did to stop in and try A Slice of Cheesecake, 1 cupcake, A Piece of Cake they will sell it that way.. then you will want more. It's nice to see my mom get excited and smile like a little girl in a candy store but instead it's a bakery. This bakery helps to bring back her old memories of Hamtramck. To walk in and try to decide what she wants new or different ? It is awesome to observe as her daughter. Even if she wants the same donut, danish, her favorite buttermilk Rye, Pumpernickel or egg twist bread or her favorite Kowalski polish ham lunch meat. I hope this business stays around for another 10 years or ? Husby asked for cheesecake on my way home last night so of course I immediately thought of my local East Detroit Bakery. They had 13 flavors of cheesecake available (husby chose red velvet) and I chose a chocolate chip pound cake for myself. East Detroit Bakery also offers lunchmeats and cheeses in addition to baked goods.

If your looking for a good filled Jelly or custard donut this is not what you will get here. The filled donuts are only 5 % filled nothing like it used to be here. Very disappointed seeing this and I did buy twice. Will not buy filled donuts here anymore.

Decent bakery but over priced in their case location is everything. On the good side how many people can boast of a bakery within walking distance of their home

Love the blueberry muffins, tiramisu, and the raspberry filled brownies. A great destination during Covid and even now. Friendly staff, great service, hubby always stops in a surprise dessert.

Im black i went in to ask for a special order of onion roll sub buns they tell me know but they just made some for my friends family which is white and im on the phone with him and he hears this i hang up cause I didn't want to pull him in it before i pull off he pulls up on goes in and places the same order with no problem the cashier tried to argue with me about it and say the owe is the baker ok thanks so the owner doesn't like blacks

Fabulous and friendly. The Bumpy cake is the best anywhere. The deli section has anything you need. Don't forget to get donuts; fresh daily. And they carry Great Lakes potato chips.

Delicious! I hope when I get to heaven these folks run the bakery there. From their donuts, cookies, cakes and any other thing that they choose to produce the food is always excellent.

This was my first time here and I can't wait to go back! Visited on a Saturday morning and it was fairly busy. Took a number but didn't have to wait very long before it was called. Husband and I chose a selection of pastry items. All were excellent. The display cases are full of delightful sweet treats. There are also some day old bargains on the counter. Next time, I'm going to try their homemade bread loaves and a couple of donuts. This cheesecake was amazing! Smooth and crunchy on the top and bottom.

Always a line out the door! The ladies here are super sweet and very helpful! I never feel rushed!! They go out of the way for you! The desserts and donuts here are mouthwatering! So much to choose from! And affordable! They will continue to have my business!

Okay I'm back and forth with these reviews I've decided all comes down to what lady you get that takes care of you. This is East Detroit Bakery it's been in business for years and it's all about what lady is taking your order sometimes it's Hit or Miss I don't want to knock a local business so I'm going to give them four stars despite all my ups and downs with them

I grew up in ED, and my parents always made sure we stopped in here for some fresh breads and donuts on a regular basis! When it was time for my wedding, I wanted something different and very very yummy, and not being in the poor house trying to pay for a cake! 5 years later I STILL get people telling me how great the cake was at my wedding! The staff was very helpful when it was time to order. They even delivered and set up on a SUNDAY! (That was very hard to find!) The cake was moist, mouse filling was great!, butter creme was perfect! I still go back every year on out anniversary to get a small version of our top layer made! I don't know how their breads are now a days, but when I make my trip down here it is always busy, and smells amazing!

A friend of mine used to own an art gallery/store right next to this spot. I never thought to stop in, i dunno why. One day my wife and I picked up some food across the street at the wing place. While leaving we saw the bright lights inside the bakery and said "let's try it." The women working inside were beyond friendly, I started looking around and saw a bunch of good looking stuff. I'm pretty sure I picked two types of cheese cake (orange pop or orange creamsicle was one I wanna say) and a chocolate peanut butter brownie. When we rang up the price was so low we both were like "uh, did you ring that up right??" We've been back now 3 or 4 more times and it's always the same, super friendly, great sweets, and super cheap. Y'all ladies rule!

Started coming here in junior high school back in the 60's. Every time I come back into town I stop and pick up a few boxes of great pastries for family and friends. That's over 50yrs and I wouldn't trade them for anyone. They even delivered an order to my mother who was unable to leave her house. Thank you East Detroit Bakery for all you do. Very good desserts, especially cheesecake. My family and I have been going here for quite some time and every time we walk in they always have what we want.

East Detroit bakery has been a staple for my family my whole life . Growing up with a very polish mother from the east side, I can remember going straight from church to the bakery to get bread and lunch meat for the week. not a holiday went by without 2 lbs of krakowska and 3 loaves of buttermilk rye. Bringing in chrusciki to every class party in elementary school left me with a feeling of pride about my ethnic background. Everything there is delicious and the staff is very friendly.

I needed to get a birthday cake and was across the street at Detroit Wing Co and saw this bakery so I thought I would give them a try. OMG!!! We LOVED the cake! It was so good. A double layer chocolate cake was moist and the frosting was GREAT! For me, frosting is everything. I think I have found me a new bakery to go to.

Best bakery in town HOWEVER i do not understand why there are no prices on anything! I guess the cashier charges you whatever she feels like charging you that day. No prices on milk, cream or anything. That should not be legal. Also they don't have a place or sign for fresh Italian bread and when you ask for it they act like it's contraband and go in the back room to get it where the oompa loompas make it or something. Strange shady place but excellent food and service none the less.

I just visited this bakery for the first time to try their German Chocolate cake and it really was good. The cake was very mosit as ot should be and they used real coconut on the icing. I will definitely be back. I hope the other cakes are just as good. I saw alot of people order the Cheesecakes so they must be good also. I dont care for cheesecake.

I wish I could give them zero stars. Sunday morning just spent $48 on donuts and cheesecake slices and cupcakes . Old nasty garbage dried out refrigerator tasting shit. If it wasn't snowing I would love to go back present this garbage to them that they put in the box and ask for my money back.

It's hard to say anything bad about a place that specializes in sweets! They have an excellent variety and always fresh. You hardly wait longer than 1-2 minutes before being helped and the staff here is very nice and helpful. A few years back, we had a cake made for my mother-in-law, it came out amazing- I wish I had a picture! From cookies to cakes, it is a very friendly and delicious place to get your baked goods!
