The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Alameda | Eater SF

"East End’s wood-fired oven produces some stellar pizzas, but the pastas also deserve a shoutout, along with seasonal vegetable sides like minty snap peas and poached egg-topped brothy beans with mushrooms. The signature charred escarole salad and creamy garlic dressing is an excellent start to any meal, and the craft cocktails are some of the best you’ll find around town. Check ahead for indoor dining hours, or pick up food for takeout." - Meleyna Nomura

One of the best gourmet pizzas on the island of Alameda. Happy Hour oyster is $12/dozen. Either Olympia or Kumamoto from Oregon. 1 lb wings tossed in Calabrian chile glaze with garlic buttermilk dipping sauce was my favorite. Pappardelle with lamb & pork ragu was a signature dish, the pasta cooked al dente, just like in Italy. Oxtails risotto and wood oven half chicken were outstanding. My service professional Anne well-trained from the old school with attention to detail, very attentive, and courteous. The menu changed often. Kids friendly!

The last time I ate at East End was back in 2014. The Carbonara with vermicelli pasta and whole egg was the best Carbonara I've ever eaten. Last Sunday, I ordered the same dish to go. It's been over 11 years since I've eaten this dish so of course I expected nothing but the best and had high hopes. The Carbonara was nothing like I remembered it being. The pork pancetta was overcooked and lacked flavor. It was really hard and chewy. It didn't taste good at all. The vermicelli noodles were clumped together and plopped out like a solid hard brick when I went to go reheat it. The sauce was spicy and peppery which was different and I don't remember the sauce being that spicy back in the day. It definitely had a kick to it but not in a good way. The pasta was dry. Overall, the Carbonara pasta dish failed in many ways. Maybe the Carbonara would taste better if I ate at the restaurant instead of ordering it to go. I would never order this pasta dish to go and I don't recommend you doing so either. Look at the pictures of the pasta dish and be the judge for yourself. BTW, the Carbonara was close to $30, which was outrageous considering the fact that it was way less than perfect.

We came to East End on a Thursday evening. There was no wait and we were welcomed graciously. The interior is very charming. Hard seating which isn't my favorite but I was able to endure. It's a large open space, high ceilings, and rustic decor. The tables are placed so that they aren't right next to each other and angled so that they aren't side by side. You can see the wood fired oven from your seat but the ventilation is so great you don't smell any smoke at all. The cocktails were so well balanced you can hardly tell there's alcohol. They were very tasty and super smooth. Hats off to the mixologist, she really did a great job. We had the warm herbed olives with honey and they were fabulous! Such a great difference from a cold olive plate. Highly recommended! The honey with the salty is a magical pair. The meatball appetizer was also great. Nice portion for an appetizer, the bread was crunchy and smokey, and the meatballs had great texture and flavor. They weren't packed with bread crumbs to dilute the flavor of the meat. The little gem salad was nice and crisp. The fried capers were a great touch. The dressing needed a little more zing. It was nicely dressed but couldn't taste much. The mushroom ragu pasta was creamy, al dente, and had great delicate mushroom flavor. Nicely done! My friend is from Rome and she definitely approved. The pizza was phenomenal! We ordered the Diablita and it was probably the most simple pizza I've ever tasted but the flavors were crazy! It is definitely spicy and a perfect pizza! So good! We also got Mr. Terranova and added arugula (even though the menu says it isn't allowed). The crispy shallots added a great texture and flavor. It was a tasty pie for sure but the Diablita stole the show. We look forward to trying the other pizzas soon! The staff was wonderful, our main server Anne was the nicest lady. We appreciated her friendly persona and cheery smile. We did not have room to try the dessert but imagine it would be just as great as everything else. We highly recommend dining here. We will be back! ❤️

As part of my Alameda Restaurant Week exploration, I spent time at East End documenting their offerings. They maintain a friendly, changing menu that keeps things interesting. The pizzas feature great toppings, but they also serve interesting and authentic pasta and meat dishes worth trying. Paul, the owner, is an artist with food - you can see his creativity throughout the menu. The non-pizza items are definitely worth checking out. It's upscale, but in a distinctly Alameda way that remains approachable.

Wow, this was the first time in a long time we've really had top notch service! Came on a Friday night with reservations (they'll give you a better table if you get reservations) and really enjoyed the food. Everything pictured was $90 with tax + tip

Local squid was super good. Our server was pleasant and cool. Foods were balanced and not over seasoned at all. Impressed. Cocktails were the same. Balanced taste of liquor and sweetness impressed us. I can’t wait to visit and try other dishes!

Google
So I live across the street from east end had went in once with my family 4 months ago . The service was great and the pizza was just awesome but I had not gone back only because of a busy life so tonight I was feeling a pizza but not the basic out there chain food pizza I wanted something different so I thought I would order and I was not disappointed.the flavors are just so good it’s not a dry crust thick pizza with everything just thrown on top and baked. The toppings are flavorful the crust is thin and it was just the best pizza I have ever had . Place is my new spot for pizza . They have allot of options. I try not to eat pizza allot so it will be hard not to order everyday lol

Google
Fantastic service! Great menu selection too it a nice balance of comfort food with just the right amount of upscale. Happy hour has some nice specials and all the draft beers were local craft.

Yelp
This place is fantastic, and definitely a top place in Alameda! Seasonal drinks are super creative and so are the food options. Fried bread, great pizza options, risotto, carbonara with guanciale, ragu, all fantastic. Super great staff too. And prices don't break the bank. Only complaint is that it's gets a little loud at peak times. Definitely get a reservation too since this place is always packed.

Yelp
Overpriced pizza. Def not good value. Subpar quality and quantity of ingredients Ordered the cheese and added pep and the smokehouse. Ordered through DoorDash and arrived on time. Pizzas looked like it was cooked earlier in the day and left out. It arrived cold and stale. I only live locally so there's no way it could be that cold on arrival. Barely any pep and the smokehouse had no flavor. Also for the price of each one, frozen pizza from the store is probably better.

Yelp
My top 3 restaurant in Alameda! Bianca pizza is the best! Must try their house fries, ox tail risotto and happy hour $1 oyster on weekdays Cocktail selection is great! Classic margarita is so refreshing and not too sweet.

Yelp
Delicious!! The service was so friendly and the staff was welcoming! The restaurant is super cute and I loved being able to see the wood fired oven! Our friend recommended it and we are so glad we listened. This feels like an Alameda staple and I understand why!

Ketzia W.

Yelp
I tried to call to ask a question about how spicy the chilies were but they don't answer the phone. Decided to chance it as I had never eaten there and wanted to try some new pizza on the island. Turns out it's really spicy. I'm sick, hence ordering out but I don't think I can handle this spice level. Sad. $41 in the garbage:( Please state on your menu that this is spicy as you did in other descriptions of pizzas on your menu!

Yelp
Went to East End for the 10th or 11th time (love their happy hour too). Got oysters, which were perfect, pizza, pasta, and beers. We're seated and served quickly, and enjoyed the overall experience and the food is always delicious, everything feels and tastes handmade, with seasonal ingredients, and the pasta was especially memorable. Always love the servers and we got plenty of water refills and weren't rushed to leave. Always love the vibe of their cozy space, which is walking distance from where we live so that is perfect, but there is also ample parking around the restaurant.

Yelp
First time we tried to go here the Hostess who is part owner was a bit rude. We didn't have reservations and she made it apparent we weren't very smart for that. Second time around we made reservations and had Hh oysters and pizza. Both super good. Would comeback but it won't be our local spot as we hoped. It needs a bit of warmth inside, both from aesthetic and personality sides....

Yelp
Great fresh pasta. Amazing cocktails... the pizza is great and the name is East End Pizza, but don't shy away from the fresh made pasta.

Yelp
I had such a great experience at East End! The food was absolutely delicious and the menu itself was surprisingly intricate and creative--there were so many unique options that it took us a while to decide what to order (in the best way!). We came during happy hour (5-6 PM) and got the $12 oysters, which were super fresh and perfectly prepared. Such a steal for the quality! A special shoutout to our server Anne--she was amazing! She was so sweet, attentive, and genuinely helpful with her recommendations. Everything she suggested turned out to be fantastic, and her warm energy really added to the experience. If you're in Alameda and want great food, thoughtful service, and a cool menu, definitely check this place out.

Yelp
I used to enjoy this place before Covid--everything was always wonderful. This time, however, was disappointing. We had a dinner reservation at 5:00 pm and ordered a lot of food, but everything came out slowly and one at a time. Our pizza didn't arrive until 6:15. Then, right after it was finally served, the hostess (with grey hair) came to our table and told us we needed to finish and leave by 7:00 pm because they had another reservation. Considering how late our food came, I felt this was extremely inconsiderate, unprofessional, and rude. Poor service and very inconsiderate! The service felt rushed and very disappointing. Management really needs to address this--especially with the hostess, who should be welcoming and cheerful, not dismissive. I'm sharing this because I hope management takes it seriously and makes improvements.

Yelp
The first restaurant I've been to that hasn't greeted customers with a smile or said hi when we arrived. We were greeted by the host stating the number of people in our family. We ordered 2 pizzas, 3 drinks and an appetizer. No good byes or thanks for coming as we left. We're accustomed to friendlier hospitality.

Yelp
I had an impressive dining experience here! I love the interior and location of this place, it's really nice. The service was amazing, our server was really attentive to us. All of the staff were warm and welcoming. The food was amazing! For cocktails, I had the Kool Time which has gin, lemon juice, and a hint of mint - super refreshing. I also had a chance to try their old fashioned (not pictured), it was also really good. The appetizer, chicken wings, were amazing! The buttermilk sauce added the perfect zing to the sweet sauce on the wings. We asked for hot sauce and the server gave us a homemade chili sauce that the chef made - the spice level was perfect. We ordered the meat combo pizza, and as someone who lived in NYC for a couple of years, this is hands down one of the best pizzas I had in the west coast. We also had the pappardelle - amazing ragu sauce! It has lamb but it doesn't taste gamey. The meat was super tender, very flavorful. The Linguini with Clams was packed with garlic, so good! The wood-oven chicken was super juicy. To end, we had the peach cobbler which was baked to perfection! I super appreciate that they accommodated us as a walk-in. Next time, we will definitely make a reservation.

Yelp
The restaurant was empty but they stayed open to make us a yummy dinner. I enjoy the seasonal offerings which currently include fresh corn on the cob and a refreshing watermelon and tomato salad. This is a good place for vegetarians.

Yelp
There's free parking behind the marketplace that is slightly tricky to find. Spaces are also fairly compact. We saw a number of larger vehicles parked over the lines. There's also plenty of meter parking (free after 6pm). We were greeted and seated immediately upon arrival around 5:30. The place wasn't too busy. The table for two is on the small side, but the bar area looked spacious. Bathroom was a little tricky to find. Our server was awesome. Very knowledgable with recommendations and details, but not pushy. I can't remember his name. The menu was availed via QR code on the table, but the lovely server took our orders. The happy hour specials (5-6pm) on 1/24/24 included 12 oysters for $12, $14 specialty cocktails and $1 off wine and beer. We shared the King Thistle Pizza and Pappardelle w/Lamb & Pork Ragu. The house made pasta had a nice chew to it and a decent sauce. Not too salty or gamey. Pizza had a great dough, but would have liked the crust to be slightly fuller. Pasta portion on the small-medium side. I had a gin cocktail that had peppercorns in it that wasn't very good. Our server picked up on it and offered to replace the drink which was nice. My partner enjoy his first Negroni, but noted the second one didn't taste quite the same. Overall, good dining experience.

Yelp
East End has done it again! Made a reservation for 2 to dine here Saturday night. Upon arrival, we were seated right away due to our reservation. Service and Staff: - I didn't catch our server's name, but she was fantastic! She's one of maybe two or three servers who can take your order without writing anything down and get your entire order correct. This never happens! I made sure to let her know how great she is. Food: - Margarita: always a hit. Nice and citrusy - Oysters: creamy, fresh, tasty - Fries: the fries come with three different sauces. One is a rendition of ketchup (more similar in flavor to tomato paste). One is a rosemary aioli, which was fun and unique. And one was a Calabrian chili aioli, which was my favorite. - Pizza: can't remember the name of the pizza, but ordered it with pepperoni on top (doesn't usually come with it) - Caesar Salad: tasty salad that comes with croutons and Parmesan cheese on top - Yardbird: fried chicken sandwich that was large in size and tasty with the coleslaw. Comes with your choice of fries or a house salad. Chose the house salad that came dressed with a very delicious Dijon champagne dressing. We couldn't get enough of it! Overall, had yet another great experience here and am excited to go back again.

Yelp
Was looking for a mushroom pizza and remembered a pizza place in food court market in Alameda. Sat by the door at the bar, I won't do a Friday night happy hour again. Oysters were cool but my taste buds did a little break dance with the Carbonara. I would propose marriage to this dish.

Yelp
Innovative without being trendy. All the food we've tried has been great, the pizza deserves a special shoutout. Nice selection of beer.

Yelp
Good ol East End, I haven't been here in many years. Lately I've been craving cheese pizza and a martini. Guess what? East End has both. Walked in solo, was greeted at the front by a lovely lady, I sat at the bar. The place was busy at 5pm on a Wednesday. Shawn or Sean (bartender) quickly made me feel welcomed. Sorry if I spelled your name wrong. The decor was very modern, classy but casual. I started off with a kolsch. Ordered a cheese pizza. It's been a few years since I've been here so I forget what the pizza is like. If you want to know if a place has good pizza, you try the cheese. Pizza, nice crust, I had it baked slightly longer so there was a little char at the bottom, just how i like it. The sauce on the pizza was tasty it had a slight tang. I was worried that the pizza would have too much cheese but it had the perfect amount. I want to say it almost had a umami truffle taste to it. Zero flop. Damn it was good. I could've finished the whole pizza if wanted but i didn't. Ordered a dirty martini, Shawn/Sean did not disappoint. I wished they had more of a typical martini glass but it was really good, I would've sipped it out of a cup. I end up ordering another one. There's nothing bad I can say about this place, if you're coming solo, sit at the bar. Friends and family? Make a reservation just in case. Thanks Shawn/Sean for being a great bartender!

Michael S.

Yelp
Overpriced, skimpy on the toppings, and can't seem to manage to put extra red sauce on a pizza, despite numerous requests. I would recommend Marley G's, down the street. Or even Round Table. Both are superior to this place.

Layla O.

Yelp
We were unsure of coming here because the past times we had to use a QR code to order which is really annoying. But this time we were happy with our service. They have removed the QR codes which was a major game-changer. Our waitress was super nice and helpful and was so sweet to us. The food tasted great, we've never had a problem with the food here. I do have to say, though, I got the simple pasta and it wasn't enough food for me or my younger brother. We got seated right away and it looked like everyone else was having a good experience. The interior is great. The bar and table seating were nice and the lighting was not too bright or too dark.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
Staff was friendly and there was no wait. The pizza was personally too oily for me but we still liked it. I would just pat it down with some napkins but I was too lazy lol. The oysters were also good but small. I saw a lot of people get to go orders and they pick it up at the window area which was cool because I did not expect that haha. Would definitely come again and try other dishes or pizzas, and their cocktails!

Yelp
Great cocktails, pizza, pasta, or anything else they serve. Excellent service and a good people watching restaurant.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place! And while the food was delicious...I don't think we'll become regulars. Pros: the food was delicious and well prepared, the cocktail (urban farmboy) I got was great...not too sweet or too strong, they had a kids menu, the vibe is kind of fun, service was decent and they handled my odd severe allergy well by being aware of cross contamination Cons: we found it to be a bit pricey for what we got and portion sizes on the smaller side, they don't seem to allow customizations/ alterations...I can't have most cheeses but can tolerate Parmesan relativity well. They wouldn't allow me have the cheese put onto the pizza be Parmesan, I could only get it with no cheese and a side of Parmesan. So the Parmesan wasn't melted onto the pizza which I really enjoy. And many of their menu items have cheese. So I found that a little bit tricky to order something I would really enjoy and find worth the experience of eating out.... Lastly, when we entered there was no one waiting to be seated. When the hostess came over to seat us there were 2 other groups. When she went to seat people she didn't check to see who was there first, and actually seated the group who had arrived last. Plus didn't check to see if we needed a high chair. So in conclusion, food was delicious but the experience we had didn't match the price we paid. If I'm paying $150 for a dinner...I expect it to be a 5 star experience.

Yelp
Best oyster happy hr around, wish i got a few more rounds, $12/doz. Pizza is stellar, great space, impeccable service, nice to have an elevated restaurant in Alameda

Yelp
My friend and I came to eat oysters here on their happy hour special. The oysters are $12 for a dozen, $1 an oyster. We had to worse food poisoning from it for a week. It was absolutely terrible, constant pain and discomfort for a week. The oysters tasted normal as oysters tasted, but perhaps the preparation for it was not adequate. I personally have lost quite a bit of weight from the food poisoning. The ambiance and service was fine.

Yelp
Tried to come here for dinner tonight. There were 8 of us. They told us they only seat 6. we said that's fine, no worries, we'll sit at two separate tables. They told us no. A restaurant that was completely empty on a Saturday night, turned down 8 hungry people trying to eat. He, one of the owners (has glasses, grey hair, beard, and taller/bigger dude) told us that he didn't want us "disturbing his dining room" - said he was worried if we were at two tables, we'd be talking and disturbing others. Wait what? Are you telling me a restaurant refused our business for no rational reason?! The food is not even that good, but damn, what a weird situation! First time for everything i guess. Tip - don't come here with groups of 7+. Pro tip probably just don't come here.

Yelp
Needed a bite before going to the airport. Strolled in here to a half empty restaurant and was told without a reservation we could sit at the bar. Which we did. Bartender was pleasant and efficient despite our not ordering drinks. Pizza was weird. Honestly, I felt like it was a flour tortilla with sauce. Ordered the meat lovers and while there technically was meat in it - it wasn't enough to "love". Between the diffident attitude of the hostess (who is either the owner or manager) and the crappy pizza we won't be back.

Yelp
EXCELLENT PIZZAS! Service was great! If you're a fan of oysters go during their happy hour 5 to 6 daily! Cocktails are superb!

Yelp
Arrived at 5:30pm and there are at least 10 tables open. A lady said there would be 45 mins wait. That means there is no way you can have HH at this place. Good luck!

Yelp
Even during COVID, the East End experience is still perfection. A couple days ago we decided to splurge on our family dinner. We ordered the grilled escarole, Meat Combo pizza, mushroom risotto, pie-in-a-cup, and two different cocktails. Every item was delicious and the best part was that it was a meal our entire family enjoyed together. We have a 5 year old who is extremely picky and 99% of the time never eats what we eat. He declared that East End is the best pizza he's ever had and even asked if he could have some for breakfast this morning. We've been loyal East End diners from the very beginning and will continue to be as long as they're around!

Yelp
My Dad absolutely loves this pizza, his all time favorite thin crust. In my opinion the pizza is good, but the salad is even better. Very basic, just mixed greens, but I just love their house dressing. Customer service can definitely be lacking, thus the 4 star rating for inconsistency. Otherwise a five star meal for the quality and price.

Lola P.

Yelp
Pizza it's delicious but the lady at the front it's rude when sitting costumers and she is also rude when taking orders over the phone she acts like she doesn't want you to order and or to stay and eat.

Yelp
Strawberry shortcake is delicious here! I tried the food. It was great as well our server I've had him twice now and he is super awesome. They're very accommodating when it comes to me bringing in my car seat for the baby.

Yelp
The pizza is wonderful but so is their amazing menu. My kids favorite and cherished spot! Service is great and the atmosphere is huggable. They never cease to amaze! Definitely highly recommend!!!

Yelp
My friend and I tried to eat here tonight, but apparently, we were invisible. When we walked into the restaurant, we saw a "please wait to be seated sign" with a QR code. We scanned the QR code to view the menu and waited. The lady working at the bar looked at us but did not greet us with a "we'll be right with you". She stared at us and pretended to be busy serving the 2 guests seated at the bar. The server walked past us multiple times and didn't bother looking up. We thought maybe the server was catching up on orders and we would be seated soon. We were wrong. A white lady walked into the restaurant and within seconds, the lady from the bar greeted her and told her that they weren't seating anyone because they didn't have clean dishes. Okay, that's gross. But why did that lady not say anything to us? It's a small restaurant. You can see who is standing at the front. It's pretty lame to be racist and expect people to dine at your restaurant. Don't bother wasting your time or money here. There are much better establishments that aren't racist around Alameda.

Yelp
Delicious food that's great for date night or for a family night out. We enjoyed a nice dinner after playing mini golf across the street

Yelp
I made it a point to find the closest thing to NYC's iconic $1 pizza slice a few years ago and East End did not disappoint. They've become my go-to pizza spot, and even if it is a bit pricey, the quality is what keeps my business and I plow through all of the food anyway, so nothing is ever wasted. My wife and I used to share an order of the garlic knots until we realized pretty quickly that we'll each be needing our own. They always make 'em super crispy. Highly recommend. I had some close friends try it for the first time last year and they, too, have been hooked ever since.

Yelp
Food is wonderful, great pizza, great salad...agree with others that the service and overall attitude is lacking. I didn't think that would matter as much as it did, but it really does affect the quality of the experience. I felt like a bother to the restaurant rather than a guest. Pick up orders also tend to run way behind schedule. Mutual feelings of goodwill between an establishment and customers go a long way and sadly they're lacking here.

Yelp
I'm no expert on pizza, but after trying a number of places over the years, I'd say that East End has some pretty tasty options and combinations that are on the fancier gourmet side. Getting takeout from here was interesting, because their pizzas don't travel well unless uncut and they noted this when ordering online. Their crust was definitely on the thinner and chewier side, so slicing through it wasn't the easiest. I was wondering how the dough would hold up to all of the aromatic toppings and it did really well. The "Bianca" pizza had olive oil, garlic confit, fresh mozzarella and herbs. Added crimini mushrooms for an additional charge. And goodness that garlic confit was STRONG, so strong that heating up a single slice made the entire house smell like garlic lol. I appreciated that they didn't hold back and it was packed with flavor though. The "Cheese Please" pizza came with tomato sauce, house cheese blend (not sure what that consisted of as they weren't listed out online). Added house made Italian sausage and spinach. The cheese on here was definitely earthy, kinda funky, yet it worked with the savory tomato sauce and sweet sausage. It was nice to have this pizza to balance out the Bianca. We've passed by East End a number of times when going to the marketplace, but this was the first time trying their food and I would say that I was surprised by how bold their food and flavors were. I'm interested in trying their pastas and free-range chicken dishes next time. I think it might be an entirely different experience eating the pizza at the restaurant vs. takeout/delivery and one that I'd look forward to.

Yelp
My first time back since the pandemic for an appetizer and a gl. Wonderful new bartender Malesia (sp?) guided me in my wine choice. I had not had chicken wings for at least 15 years and went for it. Delectable wings tossed in a calabrian chile glaze sauce with an aoili dipping sauce. I'm going back for the Happy Hour Oysters next time( 5-6pm ). The bartender made me feel comfortable and welcome.

Yelp
I came here twice. Once I had the risotto and another time I had the pizza. The risotto was rather luck laster. The pizza was really nothing special.

Yelp
These folks make great pizza. And even some good salads. Here is the rub, they are rude. The hostess, is just basically not nice. I arrived 10 minutes early, and she would not allow me to sit at the table, until more of our group was there. It was a Saturday night, and it was not busy. I could sit at the bar and have a cocktail, but not at the table. Then there is the no menu deal. I get it, but using the code on the table requires you to set up an account before you can see the food items. Seriously! I made the mistake of ordering a Diet Coke. I know this may not be good for me, but, I can't have sugar, and it was my one splurge for the week. They don't have Diet Coke. So for me, I will not be returning.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is always on point and always delicious! Service is impeccably efficient when ordering to go or eating in. One of my go to's here in Alameda. Always will be!

Yelp
Been there before to eat in and for take out. Pizzas are fine, not my favorite but others enjoy. I think their cocktails are outstanding. The problem we had recently was service. We booked 7 of us for a birthday. When we arrived they couldn't seat us because they'd written the booking down incorrectly. We had email confirmation of our booking but they still refused to seat us - no effort to accommodate the booking at all, even if we had to wait a bit. And the restaurant wasn't busy at that point. So, upshot is unreliable, unfriendly and unhelpful service.
