I have been doing carry out here since it opened. The food quality is excellent and portions are a good value for the money. The service is really good as my food is always ready for pick up on time.

Google
We had the General Tso's Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein and Szechuan Beef. All except the Lo Mein came with a side of white rice. We had take out but the food was still steaming hot when we got home, which was a nice bonus. Overall the flavor, and heat and portions of the food were on point, except the Szechuan beef for which the portion of beef left us wanting more. Extra bonus that the meat was halal. Wished the takeout had come with utensils.

Google
Great experience! Was looking for a place to eat driving back from DC, did not regret stopping by! General Tsos chicken had good flavor and the low mein was very delicious. We got our food served very quick and the lady taking our order was very nice.

Google
Such an amazing place for halal Chinese food. Their crispy chicken is out of this world. We tried General tso chicken today as well, and it's just awesome. This place serves fresh food, and the serving size is too good to be true! Would definitely recommend this to everyone.

Google
I absolutely love East Ocean Restaurant. They have some of the best halal chinese food I've ever had! Me and my family always go there whenever we're looking to eat chinese food. The owners and staff are so kind and friendly, they always make us crack a giggle. I would reccomend anyone and everyone to go try their food.

Google
Amazing food and service. We order HotnSour soup, Hunan combination from chef special, Shrimp Fried rice and Thai curry Lomein combination. We ask them to make it spicy and its very good. Freshly cooked and also server was very friendly also answer all question regarding menu with smile.👍

Google
Leaving 5 stars because of location and the fact they are zabhia halal. I’m happy more halal businesses are moving into the area. Food is rated 4 star max, there is plenty of room for improvement. My chicken lo mein is on the bland side, it could definitely use some color( see picture), a small portion of veggies would have elevated this. My standard for great halal Chinese is “New Dynasty” on P st in DC, a must try if your have never been.

Google
Went to East Ocean Chinese in Haymarket last week and foods were great. My favorites were crispy chicken and black pepper chicken. I would visit again and foods are 100% halal.

Yelp
Ambiance inside is beautiful. The hand wipes look like red envelopes, the plastic instead of metal utensils are all very sturdy and seem high quality. Almost all of their items have their name printed on it. It definitely gives you an elegant higher end feeling to the restaurant. As a result the costs are slightly higher than what you would typically say. They allow you to walk around their tanks of seafood. Almost all the food was perfect but I have 2 complaints: - 1) the tea cups were made out of material that made it IMPOSSIBLE to hold the cups because it was sooo hot. Not trying to hold fire in my hand while drinking - 2) They messed up one order by bringing rice instead of noodles so had to remake the dish and as a result rushed to get the food out, and as a result the fish was overcooked (though they used higher quality fish than what other restaurants typically provide) However, everything else was great. The crab was tasty, the salt & pepper pork was cooked great, the veggies were awesome. Overall, the food is very tasty and aside from two small errors, I would say they are a great place to eat both dine in and take out. I do think it's worth dining in since the inside is very aesthetically pretty.

Yelp
Went today to pick up a few egg rolls and the place looked nice . As I was leaving I saw a roach crawling on the floor in the dining area . It was before noon and the place was empty. As looked around I saw broccoli and some kind meat under a table. I was disappointed because I thought I would try dining in at sometime . Not anymore

Yelp
Prompt service, delicious. Friendly staff. Order is always ready. Only once did they forget a meal and when I called they promised me a replacement meal on next order. They honored that and haven't had an issue since.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible service. Insanely rude. Tried to continuously upsell drinks and other food we didn't want, messed up our order, and forgot our waters. Would give zero stars if possible.

Yong K.

Yelp
Very average tasting Chinese food. Peking duck was especially disappointing. Szechuan beef and moo shu chicken (they didn't have pork) were pretty average.

Mac D.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Our favorite Chinese food spot. The crispy chicken and crispy beef are straight fire. The service and staff are all so kind and accommodating.

Yelp
I got a hot sour soup which was neither hot or sour, basically was just spicy water Then I got kung pao tofu, which had not the best texture, and the sauce did not hold to the tofu. The sauce was also pretty flavorless Kinda unfortunate. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but they really need to work on practicing these recipies. Maybe try them at other better Chinese restaurants. I hope y'all can do better

Yelp
When entering one of my used to be favorite Chinese spots in Haymarket, I became immediately confused with the " halal" sign hanging up and the baklava at the front counter. I asked another patron if it was still Chinese and they said yes. We sat down, perused the menu and realized there was no pork. What Chinese restaurant doesn't serve pork?!!! Oh yes...one that is now halal because the charming Chinese ex owners were now gone and the restaurant is apparently now run by a middle easter owner. This would be fine if they maintained the integrity of the old owners....which they did not. The one employee that was working front of the house brought over our place settings which were paper plates and plastic utensils. We ordered egg rolls (options were beef, veggies, NO PORK) , chicken on a stick, general tsos and combo lomein. After about 15 mins we got our egg rolls, served in a small plastic to go container, after another 10 mins got our chicken on a stick which was a doll size piece (in my photo those are SMALL skewers not large ones for reference) served in a to go plastic LID. My daughter didn't even finish her egg roll bc she said it tasted strange...the chicken on a stick had a weird curry flavor. After another 15 mins we got our entrees... the rice was served in a Styrofoam bowl and the general tso's and lomein were served in....drum roll please..... black plastic to go containers. The food was lacking flavor, the shrimp in the lomein tasted a little like ammonia and there were a couple random bean sprouts and scallions as the veg in the lomein. My daughter said she felt like we looked like we decided to have our take out as dine in... which we did due to no decision we made....we felt uncomfortable the whole time and with no waitstaff we were basically ignored as the elderly Chinese woman was getting take out orders out the door. We used to love this place.... NEVER coming back..... hey East Ocean.... leave the Chinese food to the Chinese! And thanks for destroying our oceans with the disposable serving dishes...if I'd wanted to have take out, we could have ordered and eaten in the parking lot... Maybe I should have ordered baklava because at least THAT may be authentic.... unlike the mall quality Chinese food we got.

Yelp
This is one of the best foods I have tasted in the area. Not sure about the service as we have never dined in. I always get lomein, hunan chicken and orange chicken. The flavors are rich and the food is overall delicious! Highly recommend!

Yelp
On a cold Sunday evening, my daughter, wife and I stopped in for dinner. The place was mostly empty and stayed that way the entire time we were there. They did do quite a bit of carry out and delivery business but not so much dine in. Service was strange the entire evening with large gaps of neglect and not so helpful menu suggestions. There were folks sleeping in a booth back in the corner (delivery people?) that was a little distracting. For the entire time, we heard every order being called in. Our food was ok but with my wife complaining that it was too salty. The highlight for me was probably the beef on a stick. Perhaps in the future we will follow the lead of others and just order carry out?

Yelp
On a rainy winter night, we walked into East Ocean, wanting to warm up and have some good Chinese food. It was a nice surprise to see how clean everything was, and the fresh cut flowers on the tables. Our hostess Ying came over and offered the menus, wanting for us to enjoy our experience. The combination rice with a generous amount of surf and turf proteins, and extra crispy chicken wings delighted my husband. I thoroughly enjoyed my chicken lo mein When Ying she brought in the chinese sauces carousel of three of duck mustard and hot, I was overjoyed not to have to work with little packets. Definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting good service, great Chinese food and nice ambience. We will definitely be returning.

Nancy S.

Yelp
I went into the restaurant trying to order food I seen pictures on Yelp. They say those pictures don't belong to their restaurant and they don't make those dishes. Not sure if people who posted pictures of their food know that they are posting them to the wrong restaurant.

Yelp
We ordered takeout. The food was delicious and the service was fast. We would order here again.

Yelp
Ate takeout from here recently at the high recommendation from a friend. Was not disappointed at all! Amazing food all around, including Chili Chicken, Spring Rolls, Fried Rice, etc. Was delicious and filling without feeling heavy. You can even order online and pay with a variety of methods like Apple Pay, etc.

Haroon M.

Yelp
Good fresh food. Our order consisted of egg rolls, egg drop soup, Mongolian Beef, Kung Pao chicken with cashew, Shrimp, scallops in vegetables. All items were tasteful and portions were plentiful. Although at $15+ per item charge is pricey when the food is served in paper plates and paper bowls. There is also no ice or water served with the food. I wonder if soon they will stop serving white rice with the entrees too. Service was good and fairly prompt as the only server on duty did her best to keep up.

Yelp
Tacky tacky place...plastic forks, paper plates, styrofoam food containers and plastic soup container for dine in. Didn't have free water. Had to purchase bottled water..tacky ..Had the lamb potstickers, weren't bad, a little costly...then I ordered the Mongolian lamb (over $15), some meat, A LOT of onions...a few grisly pieces...ZERO lamb flavor, when I mentioned the lack of lamb flavor she said, oh well..it frozen....wife somewhat liked her hot and sour soup, thus the two stars...expensive lunch, NOT worth it...will not return!!

Yelp
I recently had my rehearsal dinner at East Ocean Restaurant because I wanted to have a very relaxed atmosphere where everyone could enjoy themselves. The owner and staff here were so incredibly friendly and allowed me to have our private event (around 20 people) on an evening without charging an additional fee. They even asked if it would be ok to still have people stop in for To-Go orders and I said of course - I just wanted to make sure we had the space. The woman, who I believe is the manager, called the week before to go over all the details and ask how I wanted the space set-up. The whole process was easy to coordinate and everyone had a fantastic time that evening!

Yelp
Good prices very large selection food is also pretty damn good. Quantity is fair and this is some place we will come back 2

Yelp
Incredibly poor/rude customer service. With 45 minutes until closing time, we had plenty of time. Still waitress made us feel rushed. We wanted hot tea, and she claimed it was $2.00 fee (never had one before), sounded more like she didn't want to go in the back and boil the water. She wanted us to pick a drink from the fridge. We said 'no' and we'd just drink water. She then claimed to have no ice (ice machine was broken). If we wanted cold water, we'd have to buy one from the fridge. Food was ok for my spouse, but mine was overcooked (or was it just kept warm on the side of the wok from earlier in the evening- and thus a little burnt?). How does a Chinese eatery mess up the Shrimp Fried Rice? The egg rolls were ok, but the wontons were awful (and expensive). Then the strange. Waitress asked us if we would like to take home an order that someone had apparently stiffed on her. She offered it at 50% off. 'No thank you.' At bill time, she offered 10% off if we paid in cash. This place used to be one of our favorites when we lived in Gainesville. We will never return again!

Yelp
East Ocean finally opened this past week. I hit the place up for some Chinese food to go for dinner this evening. As per my usual - trying out a new Chinese place - I ordered my Chinese Trinity: Hot & Sour soup, fried spring rolls (with a side of House Chinese mustard), and Kung Pao Chicken (extra spicy). I called my order in ahead of time - I was told 10 minutes. I arrived a few minutes later and picked up my order. - Hot & Sour soup was spicier than I was expecting - but it was excellent! Some of the best that I've had; - The House Chinese mustard was potent! I was coughing and hacking from the nasal head rush it provided! I've not had Chinese mustard like this in a long time! Here's to hoping they don't ruin it and water it down due to complaints from wimpish individuals! - The spring rolls were average - crispy and cooked perfectly, but nothing to distinguish them from any other spring rolls; - The Kung Pao chicken was excellent! Not loaded down with a bunch of filler vegetables like some places. Chicken, peanuts, and chiles in a spicy brown Kung Pao sauce! Cons: - They left out the crunchy fried noodles for the Hot & Sour soup - While it did not affect the quality of the food - the owners of this business neglected to have someone proof their menus: The Dining in menu has on the front cover - a glaring spelling error: "Dinning Menu" (See attached pic - should read as "Dining menu"). The to go menu has a couple of spelling errors on the front cover: "We accept major credit card" (they accept MC, VISA, Discover, and Amex - it should read as "We accept major credit cards"). "No personal CHECK please" (should read as "No personal checks please") (see attached pic). They do offer delivery - I believe they stated within a 3 mile radius. Overall, food was excellent! I will be frequenting East Ocean again in the future!

Yelp
New ownership, they have another branch in Ashburn. Glad to have them so close in Gainesville/Haymarket area . Halal Chinese food . We ordered sweet and sour , TSO's chicken and orange chicken . Also ordered chicken wraps . Everything tasted delicious. Fresh . Server was nice and service is efficient. Owner came to us , and asked for any suggestions. They are strongly working on get kinks out as they recently took over..

Yelp
Highly Recommend!!! GREAT FOOD! PLEASANT ENVIRONMENT! KIND SERVICE! BIG PORTIONS! REASONABLE PRICES! AND EVERYTHING HALAL! Ordered the general tso's lunch special and asked them to make it extra spicy and it was the perfect level of spice! Management and employees were all very polite and friendly.

Kristy T.

Yelp
We ordered food at 7:45 and were told it would arrive between 8:16-8-42pm . It is 9:40 and still no food. We have been moving all day and we are starved. Huge disappointment since I have ordered from them before. You order for delivery on the website and then call when they don't show up and they say it's not their responsibility

Diana P.

Yelp
Ordered take out and wanted to give this a try (I love Thai). Won't go back. Ordered Pad Thai and Green Curry with Chicken. The Pad Thai appeared to have very little seasoning and was tasteless to me (I love spice). The green curry was worse. The green curry sauce was watery, there was big chunks of onion and carrot, a little bit of eggplant (not baby eggplant) and many string beans. It was more like a chicken vegetable soup.

Drew M.

Yelp
Great food. Humble and accommodating hostess. Tried the fried chicken dumpling, General Tsao's chicken, veg lo mein, Mongolian beef, orange chicken. All tasted fresh and good.
google avatar

Ruth H.

Yelp
We liked their Tsao's, Mu Shu, egg rolls, spring rolls, hot and sour soup, and Lo Mein. All good. I'd go back.
google avatar

Kylie H.

Yelp
I agree with the previous reviewer... I stopped in there Recently to sit down and relax with a glass of wine and one of my favorite rice dishes in the middle of the afternoon on my day off... Only to find a no longer have wine and they took the rice dish off the menu. This definitely isn't owned anymore by the original owners and you can definitely tell. If you're going to be that type of a restaurant, then don't be a Chinese restaurant. Do what's authentic to you.

Majid H.

Yelp
Very rude stuff. This restaurant employees are rude . They short stuff and they will deliver your order very late.

T A.

Yelp
We have been ordering take out from here for the last few years and everything we had has been good. It is not the best I ever had but it does take care of the taste for Chinese food.
google avatar

Glenda W.

Yelp
Very disappointed with the place since under new management. Service was bad. Prices are too high. No ABC license.

George B.

Yelp
Had not been to our favorite Chinese restaurant in Haymarket, VA in a number of years. Clearly changed ownership!!!! Unfriendly server. Noisy uncontrolled children running around. Had to pay for basic water. When she brought out paper plates and plastic utensils, we'd had enough!!!!!! Got up and walked out to another restaurant. WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!!!! Don't know how it is still in business.
google avatar

Todd D.

Yelp
Don't order from here. Since the management change the quality and service have dropped dramatically. 45mins for a pick up order I after being told it would be 15.
google avatar

Jimmy S.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite go to grab and go American Chinese restaurant. Tried it recently while visiting my mom and noticed it different staff/management. The menu was the same so I didn't question it. But the food was not the same. The general tso chicken was too tangy and rice over done. The lo mein was way too salty and over powered with soy sauce. Sad to see a place that I enjoyed totally go 180.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Our first experience grabbing carry out with East Ocean: VERY GOOD! The restaurant was clean and tidy, the kind lady working the cash register and dealing with the phone, orders, explaining the menu was on the ball! She was organized and kept all of us apprised on the status of our orders and then double checked to match the correct food with the proper patron. I drive home to Gainesville, THE FOOD WAS STILL HOT! Crab Rangoon: first time we ever had light, flaky, fluted dough-some of the best Rangoon we have had. Chicken Fried Rice: Yum! Crispy Beef-Awesome Chicken Dumplings: very good We will be back AND tell our Muslim neighbors about this place...IT is HALAL! The Parkers
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
The ambience is much nicer than most Chinese restaurants in Northern Virginia. Since they are a new place-everything is new and clean. We were there only customers around 1130-1230 for lunch Saturday. The service was good though the food was not. For the prices the charge, I expected better. The lo mein had dried up roasted pork and was really blah. The salt and pepper shrimp set us back around 16 dollars and was oily. I bit down and oil spurted out. I think they fried the shrimp before the oil was hot enough. The best dish we had was curry beef. All in all, I suspect that they use a lot of MSG. They gave us fried banana for a complimentary dessert along with too crunchy fortune cookies.
google avatar

Logan M.

Yelp
As the other review stated it looks like new ownership....This is really disappointing as the food was so good before! Nothing is the same and not nearly as good as it was with the old ownership.

T P.

Yelp
Great food at a reasonable price. Egg Foo Young and Generals Toes were very delicious. Love this place.
google avatar

Adila A.

Yelp
I love this place! New management really made a difference. The food is so good and the prices are actually very reasonable. The restaurant is clean as well. They have own another restaurant as well so they know what they are doing for sure. I will def be coming back here iA!

Margus C.

Yelp
So sad to see that the best Chinese in Haymarket is gone. No longer serves pork - so sad. We decided to order anyway, when asked for tea, we were told Hot Tea is a $1.99 a cup - no refills. This is no longer a Chinese Restaurant. Hope the new owners realize that not everyone wants lamb!
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Food was average and over priced after the mgmt change. Before that it was much better.

TJ V.

Yelp
Worst customer service! Called in and ordered 4 chow fun noodles and when we went to pick up our order 25 minutes later the lady tells us sorry the cook told her they ran out of those noodles!! Poor management because they should always know if they run out of something BEFORE taking the order. Very poor communication between kitchen staff and front counter. And it seems the past few times we have ordered food from here it has gotten worse and something always goes wrong. They need to get it together.

Abraar A.

Yelp
They are open for indoor dining. We ordered the crispy beef, which was very good. It was a little sweet, so I would have preferred it to be spicier, but I still liked it. The chicken chow fun was also really good. The chicken fried rice was just okay; it would also have been better if it were spicier. Overall the service and food were both very good. I would just request the food to be made spicy.

J L.

Yelp
Delicious!! Best orange chicken and kung pao chicken we have ever had!!! Spicy and so full of chicken. Will never go anywhere else!!
google avatar

Aidan R.

Yelp
This place sucks. SERVICE IS TERRIBLE!!! When we were ordering we asked about what we were ordering bcuse we didn't know the difference between lo mein and chow mein. She made a sigh of annoyance and yelled at us and was very rude. We got Lo mein and waited another 30 minutes for our food. The food was not great I like lo mein bcuse it has lots of noodles in it but there was barely any noodles it was mostly vegetables. Don't Waste your money here.
google avatar

Gregg K.

Yelp
This restaurant is under new management. The quality of the food has drastically decreased. I would not recommend it at all. This seems to be a new change, as of Jan 2020. Service was good, but what's the point if the food is bad now? Sorry East Ocean. You were my go-to, never again will i spend money at this establishment.

Colin H.

Yelp
Literally the worst service. Twice I have ordered from here by phone where they take down your phone number and order. Both times when I went I pick up the order they say they have no record of the order. This last time the lady at the counter (taking phone calls) accused me of lying about calling even after I showed her my call log on my phone that matched their menus phone number.

Liz W.

Yelp
New ownership is awful. We had been going to East ocean for years and it was our absolute favorite spot for Chinese food. Nothing is the same. The food is no longer as delicious as it was. Phone calls for take out take way longer than they need to. It's a mess. I hate to say it but it's true. I would suggest you find another place.

Mookie D.

Yelp
This place used to be really good. Loved their pork dishes. Then they were bought out. Pork disappeared form the menu. Eventually Lamb as added??? Never heard of any Lamb Chinese dishes before. Was told that Pork was removed from the menu because it was not a popular item. Baklava is not Chinese. If you want real Chinese food please go somewhere else. This place should be called "Middle East Ocean".

Donna M.

Yelp
Excellent! This was our first visit. What a find! Living in Aldie, there is not a good old fashioned Chinese restaurant to dine at. We happened upon East Ocean while on a trip to Kohl's and Walmart. The restaurant is spotless..first thing to check! Needless to say we had a delicious lunch and a yummy Mai Tai cocktail. Cindy, our waitress was fantastic. We will travel here any and every time we are in the mood for Chinese. Thank you East Ocean!
