"Taiwan has a storied tradition of xiao chi, a variety of “little eats” doled out from street stalls and hole-in-the-wall restaurants all across the island. This particular dessert specialist, located on the food-laden Alley 216 in the city’s East District, has garnered a loyal following for its fen yuan, sweet treats made by mixing mashed taro or yam with sweet potato flour. This provides the coveted chewy Q texture beloved in Taiwanese desserts. A base of shaved ice supports your choice of toppings, anything from green and red bean, stewed peanuts and taro, gingko, aiyu (a refreshing jelly made from fig seeds), and of course, the crowd-favorite fen yuan. Nothing more comforting to have a quick hot grass jelly + favorite toppings after a cold day long walk. Order, pay, eat at next door is fast and easy. Place is clean and bright, staff is friendly and polite. Love this place.

I visited on 12/15/23 at around 7:30pm. The staff member who took our order had a seriously bad attitude. Maybe it’s because this is a popular spot, but he acted without any fear of repercussions. Not only did he mess up our order, but he also got visibly upset, raised his voice, and caused a scene. It was unbelievably disrespectful. I wouldn't recommend this place; their dessert isn't worth the terrible treatment. I've had better elsewhere.

Google
Walking down the street notice catchy taiwanese dessert store. Choose your base, then add on 3 sides at your choice. Choices from classic taro ball, sweet potato balls, glass jelly etc. They give those sides generously, lots of taro and sweet potato balls. Really love the dessert and their service, very friendly yet approachable. If you're nearby must drop by this dessert store. 😍😍

Google
PROs: - seating inside and restroom (toilet) available - clean, tidy, and great service No frills, traditional Taiwanese shaved ice where you get to select 4 toppings. All of the toppings are delicious! They also make grass jelly soup (hot / cold).

Google
Most excellent place to come on a hot day. Great atmosphere quick to be served. And the selection is very big. I choose pineapple passion fruit and jelly. Soo good. It’s a must to come here with friends and family on a hot day

Google
Real authentic old school iced desserts. Order 1 base and 3 toppings for 70 TWD - there are English signs (on the wall opposite the stand) and an older gentleman staff who speaks English. This is different from the “modern” shaved ice which is more fine, so keep that in mind. However for a cold dessert on a hot day, this was a great stop! If your ice melts midway, feel free to DIY top up ice/sugar syrup found at the front corner of the sitting area. Everyone clears their own bowl after finishing, very efficient system. Service was really friendly I’d give a 5 star, only comment is that know what to order as we felt our combination was a bit random, but refreshing nonetheless (the red bean was soft and sweet)! Recommended.

Google
Traditional desserts in the middle of bustling Taipei city. This place is very busy and has one side just for those dining in. Those seats get taken up quickly. They go light on the ice and syrup by default because you can add more yourself. The ice and syrup are in a corner in the seating area. My favourite are the balls/cubes made with sweet potato or taro! They are chewy and delightfully flavoured.

Google
We came during a very hot day and this place definitely a rescue to cool down our heat. They have unlimited sugar and ice too!

Yelp
I finally see why this place is so popular. My parents and grandparents are here growing up - quote amazing. Sure service is that typical rushed, less friendly, old school service but I really did like the desserts! There is pretty much always a line, even on a sprinkle day in winter but it moves super quickly. 1) Choose cold or hot 2) Pick 4 ingredients and pay for more if you'd like. Their specialty is peanut, tofu, taro... screw it hinestly try them all! At $65NT or so just get a few and split with friends. I felt iced tasted better and loved the fresh tofu and taro chunks.

Yelp
東區粉圓 has been around for many decades. For 60 NTD ($2 USD), you can pick 4 toppings to go with your fairly large size shaved ice or hot dessert soup (you can choose the base of the dessert soup). As a foreigner/tourist, this place is fun to visit and try. A nice treat to enjoy on blistering hot days or in the cold winter. Limited seating but people come and go quickly. They are known for their Boba topping but the Taro Rice Balls are good too! There's also a bucket of crushed ice and tub of sugar water for customers to refill their bowl.

Yelp
Never thought that I would love a dessert place so much! We heard about this place through a cab driver in Taipei. It was so good that we ended up going back before the last day of our trip. They serve dessert soup here where you can choose your sweet soup base and toppings. The best topping at this place in my opinion is the sweet potato dumping, it is basically tiny dough mixed with sweet potato, it is doughy , chewy and rich in sweet potato flavor. First time I went with my friends, we chose an herbal sweet soup in which the straight Chinese translation would mean burning grass (Sao Xin Chao). The second time we went, we chose the red bean sweet soup. The serving portion is huge, you could share a bowl with 2 people, and it's inexpensive. They separate the ordering area from the dining area, you could place your order and then walk over to the dining area next door where they have plenty of tables and chairs. I would definitely recommend this place to people visiting Taipei who are looking to try traditional Taiwanese dessert.

Yelp
Great prices and decent desserts. Hot and cold from shaved ice, tofu, and grass jelly (herbal jelly). Quite a few ingredients as toppings that you can choose from. Quite a few seats but usually get pretty packed too. Go for to go as well. Not the best but a nice feel of Taiwan desserts.

Yelp
Amazing store for shaved ice, grass jelly and tofu pudding! Unlike some of the trendier stores, this is a place frequented by mostly Taiwanese locals. Prices are super cheap! I came here for the hot tofu pudding and was very satisfied. You order at the cart first then take your bowl to the room next door for the seating area. At first all I saw was a full Chinese menu but there's actual one with English on the wall next to the entrance. They have hot and cold options for the grass jelly and tofu pudding base. You then select 3 toppings of your choice from the cart. The portion size here is pretty decent and shareable between 2. Everything on the menu is $60 NT ($2 USD), super affordable and way cheaper than Meet Fresh you get outside of Taiwan! If you're looking for grass jelly and tofu pudding in Taiwan I would definitely recommend coming here! Bonus Tip: this place has a bathroom!

Peggy C.

Yelp
This was my first trip to Eastern Ice Store, and it's my new favorite dessert spot. They have an extensive menu of sweet soups, shaved ice, and tofu puddings bases and then you can add 3 toppings like boba, red bean, taro, barley, peanuts, mochi, etc. Most items are about 60NTD (~$2USD). You order at the cart, and there is plenty of tables to eat at. Best of all, there was a self-serve station for adding crushed ice and syrup to your order, which is fantastic since I'm constantly wanting more ice. This is a fantastic and refreshing classic Taiwanese dessert spot!

Yelp
If you are looking for a dessert place after a meal and are in this area, you should pass by! Essentially, this is one of the most famous places in 東區 to grab a bowl of pearls, grass jelly, and ai yu jelly to cool down. Delicious and refreshing - but not a place that I would go out of my way for.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
I love chewy gluey mushy sugary sweet. 東區粉圓 Eastern Ice Store seems to be the ultimate place for my fix for dessert. Pick your base, Pick your toppings. Lucky I know how to read Chinese if not might be a little challenging to know what base to order. Toppings though are all on display labeled in Chinese but you can always point to what you want to order. 粉圓 or Tofu Pudding? They call chewy QQ. So I guess I like Q! The lines looked long but moved quickly. Definitely worth coming here for a taste of Taiwan.

Gary D.

Yelp
This store makes quick work of your order. Get in line, order, pay, get your bowl of goodies. We ordered two warm, soft jelly tofu. They let you pick three extra toppings for each serving. I went with the sweet potato and taro balls with grass jelly. The store itself has plenty of seating as it also owns the stall next door. People flow in and out but sometimes it's still hard to find a seat. The line almost seems to die down sometimes but immediately becomes long again. The business at this place is unbelievable. At about 2 usd a cup people are coming at all hours to get a bowl. The taste is amazing and I could go back everyday. It wasn't extremely sweet and the taste of the toppings was fresh. Even after eating a large bowl of noodles for dinner I could finish the entire order of soft tofu by myself.

Yelp
(Within 24hr-only-stop in Taiwan): Five, 五, , cinco, cinque, fünf, năm, vyf... (How many more languages can I quote to emphasize my love for this place?!) 東區粉圓 (pronounced "Dong Chu Fen Yuan") started as a teeny shop in the wall (common in TW) to being one of its most popular & beloved shaved-ice joints. It has since expanded its walls to next door to include ample seating for its countless customers. I've loved it for YEARS~ * YES - Always top-notch, freshly made, delicious shaved ice ingredients * YES - Simplicity at its best: low-key & plain shop (you eat before it melts, you leave) * YES - Seating space includes extra self-serve shaved ice, water, napkins and is nicely aerated (really important in oft-muggy TW weather) * WOA (words of advice): - Be patient if waiting for seating - Order line moves fast, know what you want to order - Cash only

Yelp
Traditional Taiwanese dessert! I don't think you can go wrong with any of their toppings. They make all their toppings (beans, grassjelly, boba, peanuts, taro, rice balls and etc) fresh and they are delicious and nicely cooked. You can pick your own toppings with tofu pudding, shaved ice, or other choices like hot grass jelly. It is around NT $50-60 for a bowl. If you want more ice or brown sugar syrup, they offer free ones on the side for you to add. The must go to place when you're in East area, Taipei!

Alice C.

Yelp
Delicious, delicious dessert ice, where you can mix and match and get everything to order the way you like it. You can order up to 4 ingredients with no extra charge, hot or iced. Go with their signature 粉圓 tapioca. I also like the soft tofu 豆花, azuki beans, taro, or sweet potato. Of course, everyone's tastes is different, so pick the stuff you like the most. When it comes, it's not very sweet, but if you want more sugar, there is a self-serve corner with extra syrup or ice. Be sure to bus yourself. There is a bucket for trash and another for leftovers.

Sumin C.

Yelp
This is my go-to place whenever I'm craving a good Taiwanese dessert. You can choose either hot or ice, and choose up to 4 toppings which is 60NT. There are a lot of tasty toppings to choose from, so you will be able to get whatever you're looking for! Afterwards you can add more ice or syrup yourself depending on how you'd like it to be. There is also a spacious and clean area with seats and tables where you can enjoy your dessert. I usually get shaved ice with red beans, barley, sweet potato balls, and mung beans and I like to add a spoon of extra ice. It reaches to the top of the bowl and it is definitely filling when i eat it for dessert even though I also like to eat it as light lunch when I just want to get something refreshing and not too heavy.

Yelp
TL;DR: Tasty soup based dessert, hot or cold, with any toppings you like. Try the taro balls and boba! May be difficult to order for people who can't read or speak Chinese. My wife loves those chewy tang yuan mochi balls so this was her must go place in Taipei. We came after dinner time, so of course the place was packed with people getting dessert. The line to order was out onto the street. Remember, though, they have two lines!!! One inside the store, or another at the door. Steps to order: 1) Choose if you want hot or cold; If you want hot - follow step 2, cold - skip to step 3 2) Choose what soup base you'd like, such as red bean, tofu, grass jelly or syrup; 3) Choose your toppings. You can also ask them to choose for you if you can't make up your mind. They have over 30 toppings for you to choose, it was hard for indecisive people like me, especially when some of the toppings are not common in western desserts. We couldn't find an English menu, so my wife had to translate and explain all the toppings for me. You can also take a look at the window display to see how they look like. The taro balls have great taro flavor in them and the boba balls were so chewy. In my opinion, the hot version comes out lukewarm. You don't need to blow on it before you eat. Once you get your bowl, take it to the next store to enjoy. There's a self-serve area for you to add more syrup or ice to your dessert.

Karl K.

Yelp
Really cool spot for traditional Taiwanese desserts (Tofu pudding/jello/peanut soup kind of thing.). The flavor is spot on and the ambience is the perfect street food spot. Menu is only in Chinese but don't worry, they are used to Waiguoren (foreigners.). All you have to do is point. Typically you get 4 selections. Use the max price on the menu if you're not able to understand numbers in Mandarin. You can get your dish hot or cold. Hot is the more traditional style of Taiwanese dessert. Don't worry about the cold stuff and them adding ice. It's generally very clean/safe. Expect this place to be packed following lunch and dinner hours. You may need to have a member of your group to grab seats while you order because of how it fast it can fill up.

Yelp
For tofu pudding in Taipei, Eastern Ice is of the better. Located in the Dongqu shopping area, it's also among the cheaper snack items/foods around. Tofu time: - Iced tofu pudding NT60 - Hot tofu pudding NT60 Each bowl comes with a selection of 4 toppings. They have a pretty great, vast toppings selection. I usually go with tang yuan (湯圓), job's tears (薏仁), taro balls (芋圓), sweet potato balls (地瓜圓), or peanuts (花生). If you want cold but don't want ice you can tell them to nix the ice. The consistency of the tofu pudding here is pretty creamy, for a lack of better texture word. I like that it has some density to it. Cash only. Take out or eat in.

Natalie K.

Yelp
Eastern Ice is the real OG shaved ice store in Taipei. They don't do milky snow or anything like that. It's plain shaved ice with different toppings of your choice. If you didn't grow up eating this stuff, the toppings might be quite unique to you. The cold shaved ice is in a cold light syrup. We picked taro, barley, green beans, and some other stuff. You pay by how many items you choose to mix in. We also got a hot grass jelly, which is a thick jet black in its own syrup and you can mix in different toppings as well. We went on a cold day and there was a small line. They have another section of their store in the unit next door. It's nicer and cleaner plus they have a bathroom in there as well. Everything is cash only.

Sin-Yaw W.

Yelp
In Taipei, occasional shaved ice snack is a must. They go down sooo well with whatever other foods you just enjoyed. Also, if you are not that hungry, this can reasonably tie you over for several hours. The only problem is, there are just too many ingredients to choose from. Guess that's why I kept on coming back, to experiment the new ingredients and their combinations. This is how it works: You get in the line with money clenched in your hand. You point or shout at the ingredients that you feel interested in. Then you reach the end of the line and you pay. They hand you a bowl, already filled with ice and sugar water, and you go find yourself a seat near-by. As you dig through the bowl, you may refill ice or sugar water free of charge. This is particularly satisfying after a spicy meal, or on a hot summer night.

Yelp
Authentic local dessert place in Zhongxiao Dunhuang area. It is unbelievably cheap - with 50 NTD you can get a big bowl of 4 selections of whatever you like among 20+ options including grass jelly, taro ball, sweet potato ball etc. It is easy to get lost with so many options and I definitely haven't tried all but among those I have tried, I'd recommend the following: 1) You have to try the taro ball or sweet potato ball as they are not as common as bubbles or grass jelly back in the U.S. They are made of taro and sweet potato but are knead repetitively like dough so the texture is really really chewy. 2) Aiyu is also a nice try - it is like grass jelly but not as bitter grass jelly. It is slightly sweet and almost transparent. It lightens the texture and makes the entire thing very refreshing. 3) White pearl is another good surprise - it is as chewy as bubble but is white and less sticky. 4) White wood ear is a classic - it is a kind of mushroom that is often used in Chinese dessert and is often used to make the texture a bit crunchy and to balance out the extra sweetness. The shop is hidden in the local neighborhood with very simple and old decor as a old street food stand. There is seating area inside but you might need to wait for a couple minutes for your seat as it is often popular. It only takes cash. There is surprisingly a bathroom inside the shop.

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I got the iced tofu pudding to go, with tapioca, taro balls, and aiyu jelly. Because it was to go, they packed a bunch of shaved ice in a plastic bag and set it on top of the tofu pudding container for me to add it in when I got home. The taro balls were my favorite; chewy and delicious. Overall, I was very content with my after dinner dessert! I've been coming to this store each time I visit Taiwan, but for some reason, I felt like there was noticeably less tofu pudding than previous times. It could've just been my luck, but my friend noticed it too. For 60 NT, it's a great choice for dessert! There's also options to get shaved ice, grass jelly, and others if you aren't a fan of tofu pudding.

Alex W.

Yelp
I love this stuff. Visiting from the US and staying relatively close to this shop, I came here about 3-4x a week during my 2 month stay. It's the perfect dessert to enjoy after dinner in the hot humid weather. The only thing I wish they changed was to somehow not let the peanuts get soggy. My favorite combo is getting it cold with green bean, tang yuan, and peanuts (2x. Yes, tell them to double the peanuts). Give it a shot! PRO TIP: 1. You can ask them to put the liquid sugar on the side. Some of the ingredients are already sweetened. 2. THERE ARE 2 LINES. They take orders on the inside and outside. Most people will line up on the outside line, but you can order at the inside spot as well. It's separate.

Maggie G.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get icedddd. It's not cheap, but it's Meet Fresh quality (authentic and clean feel). And it tastes delicious :)

Kelvin H.

Yelp
Very nice and much cheaper than in US. NT$60 is $2 for 4 flavors. Store was renovated so the seating area is much improved.

Juliane S.

Yelp
Living in California, I often find myself missing this place because there's nothing that comes close back home. I always get the hot grass jelly with taro balls, 粉圓, taro, and red bean. Even if it's 100+ degrees outside I always need to get the hot grass jelly. But it's always a good idea to get 1 iced and 1 hot. For the iced dessert, definitely try the sweet tofu and add green bean, tang yuan, and ai yu.

Thuy P.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! It was quite difficult to find the spot and ordering could be tricky if you don't know Chinese but it's okay because you can just ask anyone who speak English to order for you. If that fails, show them money and point to the thing you want in your desert and pray that they can read your mind. The taro ball is chewy and soft, the syrup is not too sweet. The whole thing was amazing, quenched my thirst, cooled the heat, and transported me to another time and space. Totally worth the wait!

Jamie T.

Yelp
This is the best. Get the fen guo (yellow chewy thing that looks like aiyu but isn't transparent), the fen yuan, tapioca

Judy L.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Not only was it good, it was super cheap. We got the tapioca balls, mung beans, peanuts, and yam balls. Everything was nice and chewy and very refreshing. I can't wait to go back and get another bowl.

Dat D.

Yelp
Walked here after a wonderful meal but it was huge disappointment. All the stuff we select we all just okay. Didn't feel like any of the item were that great. I rather spend my money at ice monster or a boba shop.

Jessie F.

Yelp
I try to come here for dessert every time I'm back in Taipei. It's "the" place for boba and fairy jelly desserts. You can have it hit ir cold with 3 kinds of toppings. A small place with fast service and cash only. It's so good you won't regret the wait.

Henry C.

Yelp
Used to be pretty good, nowadays given the price (moderately pricey) I give it three stars. Still a good place though, don't be mistaken.
