The Best Restaurants and Bars in the Columbia River Gorge | Eater Portland

"For a taste of nostalgia, this is a can’t-miss stop right off the main road through Cascade Locks. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the roadside spot offers window or drive-thru ordering, with just a few tables outside. Consider grabbing your meal and taking it down to the nearby Marine Park. On the menu, order classic cheeseburgers or a chicken burger paired with curly fries or crispy tater tots. The real reason for the long lines during summertime? The sky-high soft-serve ice cream cones offered in a variety of flavors." - Molly Allen

Google
This is the best place to stop at for a treat after a day in the gorge or at the mountain. Great prices, service, and overall vibe. I haven't had their food yet, but there are many affordable options (burgers, hot dogs, fries, etc). I always get a kids vanilla cone, it's $3 and just the right amount for me to eat before it can melt (it's still a generous portion imo). The line can get quite long. They close at 5pm but we got in line at 5 (it was short this time) and were still able to order.

Google
What a gem of a place. Small town joint at it's best. Management was the best ever. He taught my son a great lesson. And my boys loved their 9am ice cream with no line. This is a must stop in Cascade Locks!

Open N R.

Google
Amazing place to get a simple ice cream 🍦 with prices that’s at perfect. I would suggest a small or a medium if you’re really up for a challenge. Over all a great experience and the flavor choice is incredible. Will always be stopping by for more with my kids

Google
So me and my other half were lucky enough to stumble upon this place because we missed our turn. I am really happy we did. Decided to stop and grab a snack after exploring some of the waterfalls in the area. Plus I really love places like this as well have very few left where I am from. First thing I noticed was the cool old sign. Then we saw the line out front and more than a few people enjoying the ice cream cones. We ordered the bacon cheese burger and the large curly fries and medium blackberry shake. The blackberry shake was recommended by the employee that took our order. She told us that it was made from local seasonal berry from that area so I was like that sounds exactly what we wanted. Our order came out really fast and they were fairly busy at the time. I definetly would stop by here again as the burger was a very good size and packed with meat and fresh veggies on a soft bun. The fries were huge and they were cooked to perfection. way better than any corporate clown could make them. Now let’s talk about the blackberry shake. Yes it is that good. The soft serve cones also looked really good but I enjoyed the blackberry shake. Definitely stop by if you are hungry and out in the area. You wont be disappointed.

Google
After a lovely lunch at the fish market, I walked down to the East Drive-in for a sweet treat. I ordered my reasonably priced chocolate/vanilla waffle cone at the order window and picked it up at the next window. I sat outside on a bench and enjoyed my cone, a sunny May afternoon, and the quaint town of Cascade Locks. 🇺🇸

Bri S.

Google
Stopped at their drive-thru to get a butter pecan waffle cone for me (one size only) and a small vanilla cone for my dog. They were very sweet and unwrapped it plus gave me a small cup to put it in. Very friendly service. Highly recommend!

Google
Busy busy busy!!! Long wait time for food, but not their fault, the line was insane. That just means it’s worth it. Classic old school diner, ice cream fare, including a wonderfully vintage neon sign. Super friendly staff, and we enjoyed what we ordered.

Stefanie C.

Google
Burgers were awesome. I didn't care for thier fries but my boys loved them. This is your iconic old school American drive-in diner. This place is popular for lunch and there are only four outdoor tables. Parking can also be tricky. It was cool to eat my burger outside watching a train go by and look out over the columbia. Would love to go again some time. Oh and service is fine except that it is slow.

Yelp
Food: We ordered a bacon cheeseburger and a double cheeseburger along with mozzarella sticks. The burgers are really good. They're not greasy one bit. The vegetables are fresh! Sauce to burger ratio is good! The one patty for the bacon cheeseburger wasn't enough- I should've gotten double meat. *** insert sad face, lol *** Service: there was about 5 cars in the drive thru but we parked and we got our items in less than 10 minutes, which is pretty fast for how busy it was. Ambiance: it's a cute little mom and pop drive thru. I'd recommend & will return.

Yelp
Came here on a busy summer weekend, food orders were 30 plus minutes out. So I stuck with the soft serve. Absolutely delicious on a hot day and it was huge. Be ready to wait in line, at least you will be waiting in the beautiful Columbia gorge.
google avatar

Yelp
A must visit on a road trip or hot day and near Cascade Locks. We were going to the Bonneville Dam which is nearby and stopped here for ice cream cones as breakfast. Lots of different flavors, I had the medium black cherry, I am afraid to see what the large is like! There is a small park area next door and can take a short walk, or make the short drive down to the dam.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
Get the ice cream! Just do it. If you want a small cone you're not gonna get it but if you get an extra large cone you will question your life choices. The food is decent but this place is definitely know. For their ice cream
google avatar

Don G.

Yelp
This road side diner is delicious! Reminds me of some of the small town places I went to as a kid. Good food, not much outdoor seating.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Great food, amazing raspberry milkshake and crispy curly fries. Quick drive thru. Easy ordering
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Love this place! Great big burgers and the ice cream cones are HUGE! The onion rings are so good and the thick cut bacon on the burgers was great, and lots of it!
google avatar

Julian A.

Yelp
We drove 47 miles to try this place and I'm relieved to report that it was worth the drive, not only because the food ended up being pretty good, but the drive itself was extremely scenic; we saw so many beautiful rock formations and waterfalls! We got cheeseburgers, curly fries, onion rings, and milkshakes, and all were delicious! Unfortunately, they do not serve Coca-Cola products... but, their onion rings are beer battered so it kind of made up for it! The service was quick and the woman manning the register was nice. My wife and I will definitely be back!

Audrey L.

Yelp
I don't understand the hype. It was $31 for two burgers with 2 sides. Laid extra for ranch, was given mayo. So many people waiting in the rain implied it was worth the wait. We waited about 15 minutes in line, ordered and waited some more. It was absolutely not worth it.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Great burgers, onion rings, and of course ice cream!! Definitely worth the stop next time you're driving by.
google avatar

Sibyl C.

Yelp
Orange cones were great end to our nice bacon cheeseburger, chicken fried steak burger, fish sandwich, fries, tots and corn dog.
google avatar

Ernie C.

Yelp
Ok, every time my family takes a day trip to the waterfalls, dam, and fish hatchery, it's a given we're going to stop here for ice cream! Now, to be completely honest with you: I have no idea how their food is. Because all I've ever gotten there is their ice cream. It's soft serve, which you can then add a flavor to. They have like 10 or 15 flavors. But here's where they really set themselves a part for other soft serve places: the cones are HUGE! I mean, they are massive!! Be warned... if you order a medium or larger size, you will have a melty mess. You definitely need to consider sharing, unless you eat fast, and have a huge capacity for ice cream! Staff are great. Atmosphere is great. You can't go wrong!

Yelp
We came for the Flavor Burst and keep coming back for the experience and now the food. My spouse has fond memories of Flavor Burst from his childhood and we rarely find a place that has this, so whenever we do, we have to stop. They know how to pull a good cone here and with good reason - the large is probably a foot high! We've been several times for ice cream, but now we know the real secret - the food is tasty! We tried the fishwich and the chicken burger after reading a few reviews. Ignore any review that compares the fishwich to any fast food chain. It's a real piece of delicious fish. I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually fresh and not frozen. I'm not gonna say my spouse and I fought over that sandwich, but it was both of our favorite. I really didn't mind giving him half that sando, because I thought the chicken burger was also excellent. A side of tots and we were ready for our fun gorge adventure. This is a drive-in or walk up spot and can get busy. They have a few picnic tables outside, but seating is fairly limited. But it's all part of the charming experience of visiting the East Wind Drive-In.

Yelp
Got a small tropical orange at 8am since we tried to come the day before but the hours were wrong on yelp and it was closed. Needless to say, it was empty. During the time we were there one other person came up to order breakfast. 100% worth. Left Cascade Locks without any regrets. The orange flavor swirls were so punchy with the citrus flavor and despite this being soft serve, it was so creamy smooth and delicious! This is a MUST when coming here. One of the best ice creams I've had ever.
google avatar

Sonja G.

Yelp
We went here on a busy Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. We stood in line for about 5 minutes and then ordered our food. We got regular swirl chocolate and vanilla cones that were tasty, but nothing different than Costco. The other food came out about 10 minutes later. The burgers were good and the fishwich was not bad. It was deep fried a bit longer than necessary, but the lettuce, onion, and one tomato slice were fresh. The onion rings and tator tots were also deep fried a lot, but the taste was okay. The prices were average for most of the items except for the double bacon cheeseburger for $13 which was a bit too much since it wasn't that different than the other burgers for around $8. We sat at the little picnic benches right outside which was great on a nice day.

Yelp
This drive-in is one of the highlights of the Columbia River Gorge. Known for their massive cones, this place is a must-stop after a day of activities. in addition to cones and shakes, they also have the classic drive-in fare - burgers, sandwiches, fries and more. Their food is pretty average and standard drive-in food, but their cones are where it's at. They have the classic vanilla, chocolate, swirl options, and a number of other unique swirl ins - blue goo, butterscotch, mocha cappuccino to name a few. They don't have indoor seating, but have a few benches outside. There's one walk-up window and one drive-thru window - lines can get long, but it moves pretty fast! A classic drive-in, don't miss out on a treat next time you're at the gorge!
google avatar

Morgan F.

Yelp
The ice cream here is delicious and size of the cones are incredible! The outdoor old diner vibes are fun and the service I've received each time I've visited has been nice. The employees are friendly and there is a nice park you can go to next door to enjoy your ice cream. 10/10 spot after a hike!

Yelp
East Wind Drive-In is well worth the quick stop for ice cream, shakes, and burgers if that's on your itinerary. Located along the Columbia River Gorge, the East Wind Drive-In can get pretty busy depending on the time you arrive. I came here with family specifically for their soft-serve ice cream after stopping elsewhere for lunch. Their drive-in is small and at most can fit maybe 2 cars in line before it blocks the sidewalk and road. Therefore, it's best to park along the curb and order at the window if you're able to beat the crowd. I got a small Butter Pecan soft-serve and for the size, it was pretty big, for me at least, but I enjoyed it. Aside from that, service was friendly and the wait wasn't too long. They typically call out your number at the window once your order is ready. Overall, good experience!

B M.

Yelp
Save your money. Avoid East Wind Drive-In at all costs! The owner's disrespectful behavior towards customers has reached a new low. Despite being a longtime patron, the deteriorating service and the owner's increasingly negative attitude have become unbearable. My most recent visit was the final straw. Not only did the owner display a short temper with my guests, but his strong accent also made communication difficult. Despite politely asking for clarification, he became irate for no apparent reason. When questioned about his behavior, he rudely shut the drive-through window on us, telling us to leave "Go away". It's disappointing to see such poor treatment of customers. We will not be returning. If I could give 5 NEGATIVE stars I would have.

Yelp
Always wanted to stop and try, as there's been a line each time we've passed by, but the timings never been right. Lunch today was finally the day. We arrived at straight up noon and placed our order: 2 burgers, fries, onion rings, sodas, and a strawberry shake. The service was friendly and the order came out fast. Some good and some a bit of a letdown. Hoping and expecting a messy, sloppy drive-in style burger...but the reality was somewhat lackluster. The bun was good and the toppings plentiful, but the patty was blah...a thin (yet not crispy smash) patty without much seasoning that played as freezer to grill. The fries were cooked perfectly, as were the o-rings. Large portions and tasty, yet maybe not worth the price tag at over 6$ for the rings. The shake was very yummy and awesomely thick. We were definitely full, and overall the meal tasted good. Not quite the food experience I'd hoped for from an old drive-in, but I would give them another try sometime.

Yelp
Soft serve bigger than your head.. Drove pass this spot after visiting HorseTail Falls. It was such a hot day so we had to stop by to get our ice cream fix. Also, got some curly fries b/c why not?!? Cones flavors include: vanilla, chocolate, blue goo, black cherry, butter pecan, butterscotch, green apple, mocha cappuccino, strawberry, and tropical orange. We got tropical orange, strawberry, and green apple. It is totally worth the price! Perfect for sharing! Make sure to eat it fast or else it'll melt faster than you can lick! It was very creamy and smooth! They also sell burgers, sandwiches, sides, drinks/ shakes, and more! Note: this is NOT a sit down restaurant. You can park to eat your food if you'd like. Service is fairly quick. Credit cards accepted.
google avatar

Bob L.

Yelp
It was/is a relaxing drive from Portland. We only had I Ice-cream, which hit the spot and was delicious. Next time we'll try other menu items. There was a thirty minute wait if they had to cook an order so we only had diary treats this time. You should try this business.
google avatar

Jules T.

Yelp
There's a reason there is always a line here! This place is the perfect distance between Portland and, well, a lot of great spots along the Columbia River Gorge. Yes, the food is not healthy, but it's cheap and delicious! Sometimes we'll even drive out there just for an ice cream cone. So creamy, delicious, and huge!
google avatar

Alicia P.

Yelp
5/15/2023 First, my family has come for ice cream here. It's not an eat in place and had very little variety, but what they make is delicious. This last time, my boyfriend and I were served pretty quickly. They brought out food out to our car. We got a chicken burger, hamburger and fries. MMMHMMMMM!!! It's like McDonald's but better and crispier. They didn't talk but we liked that since we were on a long drive. Again, small inside. Food is meant to be taken out.
google avatar

Rebecca D.

Yelp
It's a mistake to come here and not get ice cream or a shake. The food was good, though I would say there wasn't anything special about the burger but the tots were great. However, it's the raspberry shake that'll bring me back here!

Max T.

Yelp
You must add this place to your list when visiting multnomah fall. This mom and pop shop offers a variety of food options that can satisfy anyone's needs. My partner and I visited this shop for a light snack and it became our favorite spot. We got a small butterscotch icecream and it was life changing. We were pleasantly surprised by its quality and quality for cheap! I recommend getting a small size icecream bc you can share with another adult. The sitting lobby area was closed by the time we visit but there are outdoor tables that you can enjoy your food. Service was quick and friendly. Overall, I highly recommend visiting this place!
google avatar

Krissy H.

Yelp
The biggest array of soft, serve ice cream I have ever seen. There is a walk up window or drive threw do you wear orange cone is super big.
google avatar

Jina M.

Yelp
This review is just for the soft serve. Got the flavor burst strawberry. SO GOOD. SO SMOOTH. The best soft serve ice cream I've had. Medium cone was $5.40 but it was HUGE!
google avatar

Cindy R.

Yelp
We were craving ice cream after our hike, and East Wind Drive-In over-delivered! Omg, this ice cream hit! It was the perfect creaminess, sweetness, and that waffle cone... Yum! The service and ambiance were excellent!
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Wanted to try the green apple flavor and sadly they no longer make it and is replaced with raspberry. Went with two flavors-black cherry and tropical orange. Both were good and very creamy. Downside is halfway into the soft serve, there was a couple pieces of debris that I'm not able to figure out with it was almost some sort of plastic material.
google avatar

Tia J.

Yelp
I have loved this little drive in since I was a kid. Their ice cream cones made our regular trips from Oregon City to Hood River so much better. 40 years later I still stop here whenever I can, and when there isn't an insane line. Be aware that even in the cold weather and rain that there will likely still be a line here. I don't always order meals here but ever burger I've had has always been good. My love goes straight to their flavor twist ice cream cones. They're just fun and yummy!! It's totally worth the stop, and the wait in line, in this small gorge town to grab one of these cones. This time we got the raspberry and the coffee flavored vanilla twists. Soooo good!!

Veronica G.

Yelp
This was a cute little drive through with like burgers and fried foods. The main thing was the soft serve ice cream cones. The pups really enjoyed!
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
Can't come through wind river without a stop here. An iconic spot for the town and a beautiful river view just below the restaurant.
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
THIS SPOT ONLY DOES DRIVE THROUGH ORDERS WHEN BUSY Stopped here after our hike! We ended up parking and walking to the shack only to find out that we needed to be in our car to order. After falling in line and ordering, our food came out pretty darn fast. The ice cream sizes are pretty misleading so a small is pretty much a large. The mocha ice cream flavor was ooooo bay bay The downside-- they gave me three ketchup packets and one barbecue sauce although I had specifically asked for just barbecue. I had to eat the rest of my food dry poor me Nonetheless, the food satisfied our appetite.
google avatar

Wendell R.

Yelp
It was a hot summer day and i thought I'd try a vanilla with an orange swirl. It took me back to my youth when I would eat creamsicle ice cream in the cup. Perfect blend of vanilla and orange. It did not disappoint all the way to the last bite. East Wind Drive-in is a destination spot. Put it on your bucket list.
google avatar

Sylvia K.

Yelp
This was my favorite place to eat in Cascade Locks. I came here two days in a row after hiking nearby to have lunch. They have a walk up window and also a drive thru window and sell burgers and soft serve!!! They have an inside dining area but it's closed right now, probably cuz of pandemic. Because both days were so hot, there were lots of people getting food and everyone ordered soft serve. The choco vanilla twist soft serve seemed to be the most popular ice cream order. On my first day, I ordered a cheeseburger and a soda and curly fries and a strawberry cone which is vanilla with like strawberry syrup swirled around it (how do they do this??). I asked if I could pay for my cone now but get it later after I finished my burger so that it wouldn't melt and they said yes! Woohoo! The food came out FAST. Like five minutes. And the cheeseburger was really really good. I think the bun was toasted. Maybe I was starving from hiking 15+ miles but it really hit the spot. The curly fries were HOT and good and salty and crispy. It was a well deserved meal. And then I got my cone. It was good. I mean it's soft serve. It's good! It was so hot that day that it started melting immediately lol. But boy was it perfect for the hot weather. The next day I came back and ordered the Fishwich which is basically like the filet-o-fish (which i LOVE). Maybe a little better than filet-o-fish because the bun was toasted. I found this place absolutely charming. The employees working the window were nice. Also, this place was mentioned in the book "Wild" in case that is interesting to you. It's a solid spot for food in Cascade Locks.

Daniel J.

Yelp
We love to stop in after visiting my grandparents on the way back home. We left my grandfathers birthday a little early to get there in time to get dinner here. once the worker saw us pull up at 4:45 on saturday they turned off the open sign when it was obvious we wanted to place an order. my parents were very upset and I had to stop them both from being Karens. Be thankful I saved you from my parents wrath.
google avatar

Viviann L.

Yelp
Fast and a few different selections for drinks and food. Great price and good quality. Tasty burgers and curly fries. The ice cream is really big too! There's drive in but you can order up there too. Would recommend and would definitely go back again if I'm around the area

Lanie G.

Yelp
This review was written after multiple visits. For starters if you're coming for breakfast they no longer have their menu outside so if you don't remember the old menu good luck and they don't keep to posted hours. Also the man running the drive in is ill mannered and very shrewd. The food most every time was bland, too greasy or both and not worth the money. The ice cream is still good and the coffee is decent but the quality and service has gone down consistently since the last couple years. A shame for a place that used to be a gem.
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
I can only account for the ice cream, because it's all we ever get. Always a line, and for good reason, massive cones that are delicious and fair priced. We go out of our way to stop here!!!
google avatar

Carmen C.

Yelp
Fantastic stop when cruising the gorge! Stop here for the perfect bacon cheeseburger, crispy fries, and soft serve cone bigger than your head! They did wonderful with my garlic / onion allergy and it's been a while since I've had such a tasty burger! Can't wait to be back!

Luis Z.

Yelp
It's a little pricey, the food is average and takes 15 min or longer after you order thru the window or longer during busy days I had to wait 25 min. Takes me less time to order take out from troutdale and pick it up then waiting here. I have ordered curly fries 3 times and they're always super salty and burned. Their bacon burger is not too bad.
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Driving past on a hot day I see a sign with a soft serve cone on it above an old fashioned burger joint and I'm drawn in like a magnet. To be fair I didn't order any food, just a small swirl soft serve cone. The soft serve was delicious without the chemical taste found in other chain vendors. And when you get a generous size small cone for $2.76 in these days of $5 ice cream cones, that alone is worth 5 stars!
google avatar

Jerry P.

Yelp
Oh my! Stopped in for the first time. Had the double bacon cheese burger. One of the best I've ever had. The drive through line can be a bit discouraging but so with the wait. The old guy at the window is an ass but again, worth it to get burgers this good.
google avatar

Darrah C.

Yelp
Holy moley. Quite honestly the best BLT and soft serve I have had in my life. Everything tasted so fresh and the soft serve was delicious! I bet this place gets super crowded in the summer!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Same ol' story ya heard a thousand times ... Boy meets swirl. Boy falls in love. Swirl melts. My heart was aflutter at the random, serendipitous Yelp recommendation of this just-off-the-interstate mecca for Vanilla Soft Serve Swirl Ice Cream Cones. But, which flavor burst to call on for a good time? The temptations at East Wind Drive-in are enticing: Black Cherry, Raspberry, Strawberry, Blue Goo, Tropical Orange, Butterscotch, and more. So, I got TWO cones: a Mocha Cappuccino swirl AND a Butter Pecan swirl. One for me. One for my wife. Why couldn't we both pursue this sweet-swirl-next-door attraction that seemingly everybody loves? Well, pretty quickly, it was obvious this whole affair was going to end in a messy mishap. See, it was a warm day. Ice cream melts when warm ... and, apparently soft serve ice cream with flavor swirls spontaneously erupts into colorful lava flows when warm. You drive in. Get a cone. Drive on. Lick fast. Cream oozes all over your fingers. Lick faster! Pull over at the Cascade Locks Marine Park. Suck it down in 1 or 2 gulps. Clean up your pants and don't make eye contact. Same ol' story ya heard a thousand times ...

Yelp
Always a treat to stop by east wind drive in! Prepare for about a 10-15 minute wait or longer on a beautiful sunny day! Ended up with the small blue goo and it was all worth it! Delicious treats and salty long dogs lol perfect treat for my pup!
google avatar

Jeanne Z.

Yelp
We visiting this drive-in a little differently than other people, according to the reviews. I see a lot of people ordered food, and drove up in their cars. Versus my husband and I walked over, after eating lunch nearby on a warm and sunny day. We had our dogs with us, so each of us were managing 1 dog and 1 ice cream! But, the service was extremely fast! I ordered a Chocolate soft serve-Waffle cone, and it was handed to me before my hubby even finished his order, and paid! I wasn't prepared for it to be so quick, but it was really delicious! And, it was the right size too! My hubby seemed really happy with his Milkshake, and it was less of a spill or melt-risk that way too, but I loved every bite! Cascade Locks is up and coming, there are a couple of different trails nearby, and breweries, and I believe the new- car-Free Columbia-Area-Transit (CAT) bus drops you off and can pick you up by East Wind!

Matthew C.

Yelp
Bacon Cheeseburger = 5 Stars Blackberry shake = 5 Stars Tater Tots = 2 Stars The burger and shake were excellent. I'd order them again in a heartbeat The tots were fine, but even in this pricing environment, $4.20 was a bit ridiculous for the number of tater tots.

Jim G.

Yelp
They are fast. I just had a medium ice cream cone. It was good. Cute place. Looks like it has been there a hundred years.
