February: Our Most Exciting New Hotels

"Sister to the Catskills original, Eastwind Lake Placid takes the brand’s signature Scandinavian modernism to one of the Adirondacks’ most iconic destinations. Here, you'll find the visual simplicity that's expected from Scandinavian design – but also the kind of cosiness that’s essential to a Winter Olympics destination." - The MICHELIN Guide UK Editorial Team

Beautiful property but serious cleaning issues This was our first time visiting Lake Placid. The property itself is beautiful, the rooms are aesthetic, and the atmosphere is peaceful—we especially enjoyed the fire pit. Staff members were kind, but unfortunately the lack of cleanliness overshadowed our experience. We stayed 4 nights. From check-in, the bathroom was clearly dirty—mold in multiple places, hair all over the shower, dead bugs on the sink, and a generally unclean feel. We used flip-flops to shower and tried to overlook it at first. By the second night, we requested cleaning service. The following day we came back to find only new towels and a made bed with the same sheets. The bathroom had not been touched. I went to the front desk, and the staff member explained that housekeeping doesn’t clean bathrooms during room service, only between guest stays. He left a note for our bathroom to be cleaned the next day, but when we returned late that afternoon, nothing had been done—no new towels, no cleaning at all. At that point, we gave up. It’s disappointing because the property is wonderful, but the cleaning standards are unacceptable. Stairways were dirty, our bathroom window was broken (letting in cold air at night), and even the toilet was loose. It seems like cleaning is done by untrained staff rather than professional cleaners, and it shows. If this issue were addressed, this place could truly be a gem. Until then, I’d be hesitant to recommend it despite its charm.

This is a beautiful property with a great view of a creek and pond from a couple rooms. The reason I booked the room I did, was mainly for the view and the size of the room, which I was not disappointed with. The staff was friendly and welcoming upon arrival and made me aware of free s’mores, the bar availability, and free bikes for guests. However, I feel the price for the king suite in the Champlain house which I booked because of the view, was overpriced based on the following factors. Firstly, the sink and shower drains began to back up after about a minute of use. The shower because it gets backed up, floods onto the floor due to the design of the shower. The bathroom door doesn’t latch fully, so it pops open after it’s closed. The floors, walls, and other areas of the room could use a deeper cleaning. There wasn’t a way to deadbolt the main door to the room. There’s what looks like a small lock, but it didn’t turn to allow me to lock it. The big window on the side has sheer curtains, but not blackout that will provide full privacy if the lights are on in your room at night. The only garbage can in the room is the small one in the bathroom. A TV would be nice for background noise to fall asleep to, but I understand not having one for the location the hotel is in. Parking on property is VERY tight. You have to maneuver your vehicle into a lot of the spaces. I think a future stay at this property would depend on the price for the room.

Great stay, they have multiple houses with individual units and also some cabins. We stayed in a small unit (bedroom with king sized bed and bathroom) in one of the houses. Very clean, spacious and comfortable. Pool with sauna available, with a fire going at night and smores. Bikes available as well during the day.

Absolutely in love with this hotel. This is our second stay and we will without a doubt return. I love the unique room concept, the location is great since it’s secluded but close to the main area. We asked last minute for an upgrade room and the owners accommodated us with ease. The all around vibe of the place is amazing, a great getaway close to home. I would recommend over and over again this place.

The concept of this place is amazing. The grounds are really beautiful and everyone was kind. However we ended up leaving our reservation after 1 night (2 nights were booked) for a few reasons. The most glaring was the fact the shower head did not work in our room. The bathrooms are incredibly aesthetic and pretty but have zero functionality. We used the hand held shower head since the mounted one didn’t work but it resulted in water everywhere since the shower curtain in the clawfoot tub was useless. Secondly, it was so loud until 1am. The converted houses are old so there is zero sound proofing. I don’t think there’s any staff on site over night so there was nothing to do about it. I understand that hotels like this aren’t meant to be silent but it was a little obnoxious. For the cost we paid, it did not align w the experience, especially since we didn’t stay for the second night.

My stay at the Eastwind Hotel in Lake Placid was short but wonderful. I came in on a motorcycle from New Hampshire, and was rained on and frozen for four hours before my arrival at the hotel. Patrick checked me in quickly, pointed me at the sauna to begin working feeling back into my extremities, and went above and beyond to take all my soaking riding clothes to get them dried and returned to me, which was deeply appreciated. The staff is clearly attentive and dedicated. I stayed in one of the lushna cabins, which was exactly what I wanted and needed. Very comfortable bed, functionally appointed and situated in a very cozy, picturesque locale. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the main drag in town. I hope to return soon to take more advantage of the communal campfires, bar, live music and everything else Eastwind and Lake Placid at large has to offer!

This hotel is a hidden gem. The check-in process was seamless via text message after hours. As soon as you walk into the room, you feel like you are in a secluded Scandinavian cottage. The King Suite Champlain is open and airy. My favorite part was the luxurious bathroom. This place provides an experience you don't want to miss!

We had such a lovely time at Eastwind! We stayed there 4th of July weekend and they hosted live music, a BBQ, s'mores around the fire pit and more, all of which were amazing. The pool and sauna are great, as well. It’s located just outside of the busy downtown area and was very walkable, which was perfect for us. Can’t wait to go back!

Yelp
One of the worst places to stay. The so called bar consists on 3 barstools with a selection of craft beers only. They add their own tips on to anything you get for your room. The beers we had was almost $20 for two. The housekeeping staff didn't even make the bed, just emptied one trash can. I will be finding a better place to stay in Lake Placid.

Yelp
I'll assume this place is new and really just getting started. The rooms are fairly interesting, but there's a lot to be desired. Here's the list: No gym. Who doesn't have one of these in today's world?!? No TVs. "It's not something we do." I'm not even sure what that means, but I'm here for a conference and the Euros are on! The lovely outdoor pool with the mountains in the background? Closed! Didn't pass inspection?!? I hate to think what that might mean? Giardia?!? $12.00 drinks at the bar?!? (ok, this last one is fairly average, but still!!!) Deliver people. C'mon, it's game time!

Yelp
One star down right off the bat because the pool was supposed to be open but wasn't being opened this year. It seemed like the staff, for the most part, was lost and didn't know where basic items were. Maybe we were spoiled by the staff at the Windham location because they were on top of everything. At the Windham location, we would ask for plates, utensils and bbq tools and they would have them in a basket, but here it was unorganized and you would get plates(some not fully clean) and mismatched utensils and we didn't even bother asking for bbq tools(good thing we went with our instincts and brought our own) because they probably wouldn't have known where they are. Also, as far as the fire pits near the Lushna, they need a solo fire pit like Windham, along with the grills they have there. Now, onto the grounds, half the grounds look like they are not tended to and I'm sure that's to give it that secluded vibe, but they need to make the walk areas and the fire pit areas by the lushnas bigger by adding more gravel. The lushnas here are good for two reasons, one being they have a fridge and two, the bathroom is in the same building, unlike Windham where you have to walk outside. Now, as far as the patios on some of these lushnas they need steps because it is at least 18in that you need to step off to reach the ground. I saw older people struggling or had to walk all the way around to the other end to safely get off the patio. Even around the lushnas they need to add more gravel in certain areas because you will step into the mud and track it into the lushna. Another issue we saw was that they needed to build a shack to keep the wood out of the elements, because the area they have wood stacked up now to keep it out of the elements isn't cutting it because it was still wet and get some fire starters like windham has because the kindling is a pain in the butt to get going while standing there with a lighter on it. I will give them credit for the suana, bicycles, hammocks and an employee by the name Boujan(I'm sure I butchered it) who I think was the main guy but was helpful and the location was a 10 minute walk to the downtown area. There's also Chubb river, which has an open field if you have kids or want to have a picnic. At the end of the day, we were disappointed overall and maybe it's because the Windham location raised the bar, but we most likely won't be back to this location. Also, don't forget your nightly s'mores kit.

Yelp
Amazing stay with incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. It is a gem in Lake Placid. Saturday night offered live entertainment in a cozy fireplace setting. We will 100% stay here again, for longer next time!
