"Iconic chef Roy Yamaguchi helped popularize Hawaiian-fusion food a generation ago, but at Eating House 1849 he takes a delicious detour with dishes inspired by Portuguese, Spanish, and Filipino flavors. This "plantation cuisine" evokes the immigrant dishes served in the mid-1800s, when the state's first restaurant—a Honolulu establishment called Eating House—opened (according to legend). Yamaguchi brings some serious chops to the table: He trained at the Culinary Institute of America before serving as executive chef in Los Angeles 's La Serene and winning a James Beard Award. The menu shifts seasonally, according to what farmers, foragers, ranchers, and fishermen produce. Expect delicacies like a beef-and-wild-boar burger and pork lumpia with green papaya. Cap it all off with cinnamon-dusted malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts) with Koloa Rum sauce!"

This was the best meal we had during our visit, and it potentially makes it to the top 5 of my life. The short ribs liquified in my mouth, the pineapple upside down cake was designed by a palate wizard, the pork and shrimp appetizer melted in our mouths. We had the most delicious drinks, and even the opener edamame was stunning. Our waiter, Dante (it's what is on the receipt, his name escapes my memory due to the beer flight, I'm sorry!) was knowledgeable, correct in every recommendation, and I only wish I had room for that other dessert! Thank you so much for taking the time and attention to make such a lovely night.

Google
Didn't get a photo of all of our dishes but EVERYTHING was amazing!! Our server was so sweet and attentive and had the cutest Paradise Now dress on. We dined on 9/26. The manager Appoli was the best!! So friendly and helpful. Very supportive to his team. Everyone there is super friendly. Will return for sure!!

Google
Made reservations in advance for a group of 10 on a Sunday evening. Restaurant was about halfway filled. Service was very friendly but incredibly slow - we were there for over 2.5 hours and waited about 1.5 hours for our dinner to come out. Had to ask for drinks and various items more than once throughout the meal. Great views & had a nice breeze/open windows. -Tomato & Mozzarella Salad (tasty) -Roy's Classic Combo (very good!) -Ube Mule (too sour for my liking) -Home Grown Cocktail (decent but wouldn't order again) -Spicy Ramen (delicious!!) -Chocolate Melted Souffle (delicious!) Overall, would recommend for a large party and very delicious meal. Just be aware of the time/possibly slow service.

Google
While our servers and everything here were excellent, we just felt the food and drinks for the elevated price point were not worth it. The pot stickers were delicious but not worth 22 dollars, and the ramen and blackened ahi tasted fine, but nowhere near our favorite meals we've had in Kauai.

Google
Me and my partner went here for our 4th anniversary yesterday. Staff were super friendly and congratulated us for our anniversary! Waiters came by to check on us, take finished plates away and also filled our water glasses frequently. Foods were portioned good, just two pupus alone with a side of rice made us full already and we came in with empty stomachs lol ( Pork with shrimp potstickers and sizzling ribeye tataki) The deserts were amazing and weren’t too sweet just the right amount and presentation was spot on! We enjoyed the halo halo, chocolate soufflé and chocolate cake on the house for our anniversary. Desserts were also the right size portion This was our first time eating here, foods are on the pricey side but we enjoyed our meal. definitely planning to come back again to try the rest of the menu

Google
The food was some of the best I've ever tasted. The service was attentive but not annoying. The servers were kind and helpful. The management seemed to really care that their patrons were happy and satisfied with their meals. The atmosphere is classy but also somewhat casual, which makes it feel very comfortable. I ate their twice, and both times had a wonderful experience!

Google
Amazingly well prepared Hawaiian/Asian dishes. I had the pot stickers, signature butterfish, and chocolate lava cake - all highly recommended. Extremely friendly staff. My server explained the menu is great detail and offered great recommendations. Location is easy to find. Reservation recommended.

Google
We really enjoyed spending our anniversary dinner here. From the blissful ambience to the tasty food to the awesome service (Macie is amazing!) and to tasting the best dessert I’ve ever had—still can’t get over it!! For dessert, please please get the pineapple upside down cake! Great location since it’s within the shopping areas and it’s a better location than Waikiki.

Yelp
We sat at the bar and the food and service was astounding: had the sashimi and shrimp and scallops and you could still taste the sea. And the barkeep, Lenna, was the best bartender in Kauai and makes a mean martini.

Kay B.

Yelp
My wife and I just ate at the Eating House and it was amazing!!!! We highly recommend this place! the food is awesome and the atmosphere can't be beat! The short ribs and seared scallops are two of the best meals we've eaten! The staff were awesome too! just a great experience from beginning to the end! Don't miss out! this place is for real !

Yelp
This was by far the best meal we had on the whole island. It is definitely worth the cost. I had the ube-be mule and it was unlike anything I have ever tried before. It was so delicious. My husband loved the tropical elixir cocktail. I wish I was hungry enough to eat everything on the menu. It all sounded so good. Our waiter was great and helped us get some of the highlights. I loved how everything had a unique Hawaiian flare to its flavor profile. It did not taste like food you could easily get anywhere else. Everything tasted so fresh and you can tell every ingredient was chosen with care. The short ribs were so flavorful and had a unique taste to the sauce. They also fell right off the bone. The pork and shrimp potstickers were also very worth getting. They are known for their butterfish and it was amazing. We did it in the hot pot rice bowl and it was delicious and large enough to share. We also had the pineapple upside down cake (not something I would usually get) but it also did not disappoint. I highly recommend coming here! I wish we had time to go multiple times. If you want to sit by the water you need a reservation but we got in without one and had a view of the kitchen!

Yelp
Food was delicious! My husband loved his burger and the portions were huge. I got the butterfish and WOW it melted in my mouth. The chocolate soufflé was freshly made and was incredible. Only con was the cast iron pot my fish came in was extremely hot. I reached to grab my drink and my forearm got burned by it barely touching the pot handle. Ouch!

Yelp
Our waiter was such fun. She was informative and friendly and absolutely delightful. The food was so good. We had a surf dish with ube potato, scallops and shrimp and a turf dish of steak and mashed potatoes. So good! We had a chocolate dessert that was so worth it. The restaurant itself is charming with an open air dining room.

Yelp
Exceptional food and flavors, really enjoyed the whole fried fish (MP), ahi, and pineapple upside down cake. Portion size is decent, as expected at this price point. Our server was friendly but even before we ordered he kept telling us about the desert menu, and even repeated it while we were eating. I get it that some of the dessert requires 20 minutes to bake but just felt like he was upselling. And also wait staff kept trying to take our dishes away and we weren't even done eating. I mean what's the rush, the restaurant wasn't even full that evening. Consequently what would have been a 5 star rating is now a 4.

Yelp
We've come here many times over the years Service wasn't as good as usual but food was nice, if you like flavorful! I loved my shrimp and scallops but the dry rub was way too spicy for me
google avatar

Yelp
We have eaten at many restaurants in Kauai, but this has been the best one. Our waiter was excellent, making recommendations to help us. I had the "E. H. 1849 Spicy Ramen Bowl," which had ginger soy braised pork belly & seared tiger shrimp, and our friend had the Misoyaki Butterfish Hot Pot Rice Bowl. My wife had the Duo Island Ahi & Hamachi Sashimi served with white rice. All three entries were excellent. The food is not bland but has so much flavor. For dessert, we had the delicious upside-down cake. The service was great and so was the ambiance. This was our first time here, and we will be returning.

Yelp
3.5 stars Pretty standard upscale-type eatery. Nothing too special in my opinion. Think Roy's, but more casual.

Yelp
We came to Eating House 1849 for a special occasion and were seated by a window with a gorgeous sunset view--such a beautiful start to the evening. The food was excellent. My favorite was a crispy-skin fish (can't remember the exact type) served with soba noodles--absolutely magical. The butterfish was also delicious, though for $50, the portion of rice in the "rice bowl" was surprisingly small--maybe two tablespoons at the bottom of the bowl. The chicken bowl was very good as well. Service, however, was a bit hit or miss. I often had to look around for our server just to get a water refill. Toward the end, she dropped off the dessert menu and mentioned that the pineapple upside-down cake (and one other dessert) required a 25-minute prep time if we wanted it--but then she didn't return for 20 minutes, so we never got to order. Despite the service hiccups, the flavors were great, and overall it was still a good dining experience.

Yelp
We were visiting to celebrate our twins bday on vacation in Kauai. Food was amazing, they accommodated our GF requests and brought 2 types of desert for our kids bday with a candle. The short ribs and Cod fish was delicious. Food came in fast, and service was outstanding!

Yelp
Food and our waiter were fantastic, 5+. However, our bus person was very sarcastic and a real wise ass. Experience would be a 6 out of 5 if we only had our primary waiter.

Yelp
An excellent meal at @chefroyyamaguchi's @eatinghouse1849! Innovative take on Hawaiian cuisine with an Asian influence. The melting chocolate souffle was ‍ and is not to be missed. for the pork ribs, the potstickers, and the brussels and cauliflower. Loved all the food from start to finish. Service was a little mixed. Excellent water service, waitress checked on us a few times, but we ordered dessert sufficiently in advance (20 minutes notice required) and still waited probably double that to get it. Took a little bit of time to get our food order in too. But they had a nice birthday treat for my dad's birthday and overall it was a great meal. Pork & Shrimp Potstickers Roy Yamaguchi's Original Mongolian St. Louis Pork Ribs Fried Brussel Sprouts & Cauliflower Edamame Drunken Gochujang Chicken Slow Braised Honey Mustard Grilled Beef Short Ribs E.H. 1849 Ramen Bowl Misoyaki Butterfish Roy Yamaguchi's Melting Chocolate Souffle Pineapple Upside Down Cake Birthday Surprise (Fudge) Tropical Elixir Poipu Breeze Ube-be Mule

Yelp
Always my go to place for tasty Italian food in St. Helena. Must try's include, mozzarella al minuto (so good!!), Caesar salad, rigatoni bolognese (great sauce!!), Ducati pizza. The patio is a great place for a group during nice weather and service has always been attentive and timely.

Yelp
We had heard good things about this place and the hype was very warranted. First each and every employee was awesome. Like excellent service from the front desk to the water guy and waiter. Everyone on point, all the details and attention you'd want! The food omg go eat that signature butterfish! To die for! It was a Monday night so it was quite and romantic and just lovely!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots to have ramen! Had it for the first time 7 years ago and I'm still in love. Eating House has a fantastic menu and nice open seating, but we did make a reso beforehand. I already knew I was going to get the ramen, but we decided to get two appetizers too. The blue crab and corn fritters were okay - I wish there was less bonito flakes/less ingredients to really let the crab and corn shine. The potstickers were yummy! The star of the show of course was the ramen, which came in a huge bowl (enough for me to take home for later too). I asked for extra chili oil to make it more spicy, which brought it to the perfect level for me. Plenty of pork belly, shrimp, and ground pork and other delicious toppings. An unexpected but welcome twist was the addition of the grilled tomato - a nice bite of acidity!

Yelp
Wrapped up my birthday month with an amazing dinner at Eating House 1849! This beautiful spot, created by Chef Roy Yamaguchi, is located in a stunning shopping center and offers a perfect blend of island flavors and classic dishes. (There's also another location in Honolulu if you're ever nearby!) Some of my favorites from the night: Ahi Sashimi - so fresh and flavorful Crispy Brussels Sprouts - addictively good Lemongrass Kauai Shrimp - packed with aromatic spices Paella - hearty and delicious Ribeye - cooked to perfection Definitely a great way to kick off the end of my birthday month!

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in for a bowl of ramen while on our honeymoon and it definitely scratched the itch. The menu is non traditional and everything seems well done - I'd like to come back and try more items sometime. Great vibe with good views in a beachy environment and our waitress was the most friendly one we've had this trip.

Yelp
We had a reservation for 730 PM and got seated 15 minutes after. The receptionist was very nice. I ordered NY steak tataki, the portions weren't bad, this is one of the appetizers priced for $27. They cooked it perfectly, medium rare. Maybe the size is either 3 or 4oz. Ceasar salad with anchovies was good, best in their menu. Hubby ordered salmon hot pot, it was ok, nothing special. For the dessert we ordered chocolate soufflé, we waited for 20 minutes since they have to make it from scratch. The waiter gave us the dessert menu ahead of time but didn't comeback to us for the dessert order until we were done eating our main course. We also got a complementary chocolate decadence for our anniversary. Thank you !! It was rich and delicious. This is located in the 2nd floor, you either use the stairs or an elevator. They have no AC but with fans everywhere. This is a casual setting, people wear shorts and flip flops. Noise level moderate. Available parking but I noticed this mall parking is always full. This is a pricey restaurant, if you compare it to Keoki Paradise, you get value for the price with Keoki.

Yelp
It's a bit on the higher end. If you want to go to a nice restaurant, this is a good one! A bit fancier vibes. Some fake candles on the table. Our server was Dante, and he's a 5 star server! He was super educated on the menu and gave us good recommendations. The tartare was my favorite app. The shrimp was a good one. The sauce was flavorful! The steak app was mehh. My ahi entree was good. My friend said her rib eye wasn't fatty enough and felt it was as more like a New York strip. My other friends enjoyed the butterfish dish a lot. Pineapple dessert was our favorite. Halo halo tasted good. The lava cake was meh.

Yelp
Excellent service: friendly and honest recommendations--thanks Mikie! Superb food: intense flavors, well presented and generous portions. Ambiance: perfect view of the beach!!! Reasonably priced. Absolutely loved it! This place is a must-visit--unforgettable food and atmosphere. I'm already looking forward to coming back. Don't miss out!

Yelp
The service, first and foremost, was incredible! Everyone was so polite and made the entire dinner so fun! I shared the potstickers with the table and they were delicious!! Easily the crowd favorite. For my entree I got the boar burger, and it just wasn't my favorite - it was too sweet for me. But my husband got the steak and it was cooked perfectly and my parents had the short ribs and they were delicious! Together we shared the chocolate soufflé and it was delightful! Everything was so flavorful and fun, we highly recommend! The restaurant is gorgeous! The servers and hostesses were so friendly and helpful!! Worth the stop in!

Yelp
Solid dining experience, food was tasty, views were beautiful (especially during sunset), open air concept, staff and service was friendly. Tried making a reservations weeks out on Open Table and said nothing was available. I tried calling and was able to get a reservation on the time and date that I inquired about. Keiki (kids) menu offered buttered pasta with shrimp or fish and chips. The main menu offered a little bit from the land and sea. We shared the following: Black garlic and yuzu ahi tartare 1849 Spicy ramen bowl Blackened Island Ahi Chocolate lava cake The tartare presentation was nice, the color was offsetting but it didn't bother me since I know that's how tuna should look after all of the ingredients are mixed together. Tasty but needed more bread or chips to dip. Spicy ramen wasn't really spicy but the flavors were rich and the noodles were perfect. Blackened island ahi was a 6 oz portion, enough for one person or to share. The crispy brussel sprouts was a nice touch. Lava cake was delicious.

Yelp
Eating House 1849 Koloa from Roy Yamaguchi is a great time that needs to be experienced. We kicked off our meal with Roy's Original Szechuan Baby Back Ribs. These beauties fell off the bone with a gentle nudge and were a perfect prelude to the feast that followed. I went for the Misoyaki Butterfish Kamameshi, a dish that struck a beautiful balance. The misoyaki marinated butterfish was tender and flavorful, melding effortlessly with the seasoned rice. Every bite was a symphony of taste and texture, a true testament to the chef's skill. My wife chose the 1849 Spicy Ramen Bowl. Now, I wouldn't call it the best ramen ever, but it was a well-executed, delicious bowl. The broth was rich and inviting, the noodles just the right texture, and the spice level hit that sweet spot--fiery enough to be exciting but not overwhelming.

Yelp
This location is in a nice free and upscale shopping center adjacent to Merriman's. Their Happy Hour begins at 4:00 and ends at 5:00. The food is truly farm to table and you can taste freshness in their seafood. Our server was so nice and gave me a special chocolate cake for my birthday. If you do come, please try the delicious seafood, as it can't get any fresher than here!

Yelp
Flew from outer island to celebrate our anniversary, just like we did 5 years ago to celebrate our honeymoon. Called to make a reservation, where they asked if we were celebrating anything. I happily said our anniversary- which is wished us an early salutation. This review is a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. While our food was amazing and tasty, the service was just not up to par. We have dined at many Roy restaurants between the Big Island and Oahu. My review of this location 5 years ago had me so excited to redine here but was sadly disappointed. Upon check in, seating and dinner service - no one asked if we were celebrating anything. This wouldn't have been such a big let down, if they didn't 1) ask upon booking reservation and 2) the service I received 5y reflected this kind of personalized service. I mean we flew islands for our anniversary dinner. After our dessert order was put in and we were waiting, is when our waiter Jason finally casually mentioned that we might we celebrating an anniversary. The entire dining experience was already dampened by the non-existent acknowledgement. Another thing I noticed was the GM making his rounds to each table throughout dinner service, even stopped at the tables flanking us and made eye contact with me multiple times - but failed to stop by. He briefly acknowledged us after our entrees came but offered no warm conversation- just a check off a list. The final tick was our departure. Although the hospitality severely lacked throughout dinner service, we were leaving with happy full bellies. Just a few tables remained since we were nearing closing, but no one thanked or wished us off. No matter that the GM and two servers were at the exit, or workers were present at checkin table - no acknowledgment was made. We were about to descend down the stairs when the kind bartender yelled to us to have a great night. I understand the holidays are here, restaurant is packed and everyone is busy but acknowledgement doesn't not take much effort or time. The dining experience left us so unsettled that I don't know if we'll ever care to return to this location. Being one of the few locals dining in, we were left feeling like we stuck out like a sore thumb amongst all the tourist who received exemplary service. What a shame.

Yelp
Ramen noodles were mushy. They remade them but they weren't any better. Might be the type of noodles they used. But broth was tasty. The steaks were bland. I think some seasoning would have gone a long way. I would have rated this place a 5 star just for the "slow braised honey mustard grilled beef short ribs" alone but half the group got the steak. Service was very good. The Mongolian bbq baby back ribs were good. Mashed potatoes were very flavorful and smooth. Pineapple cake wasn't the best but the ice cream that came with it was. The soufflé was excellent. If you just got the bbq ribs as appetizer, short ribs as entree, and the soufflé as dessert, this would be a 10/10. I would definitely come back for those 3.

Yelp
5 stars all around - food was exceptional and the service was great! Ambiance felt relaxed despite being more upscale. We were really happy we picked Eating House to celebrate our engagement. We went all out and everything tasted so fresh and amazing - we got the butterfish and short ribs for mains, ahi/potstickers for apps, salad, and two desserts incl the pineapple upside down cake which was OMG delicious. Highly recommend. So glad we picked this spot over others in the area for such a special meal. We'll be back!!

Yelp
We came here for dinner again and our family really enjoyed the fried Brussels and cauliflower. The steak and fish are worth trying too. One of my favorite spots for dinner on the island.

Yelp
Amazing service, beautiful space and ambiance, great food! We very much enjoyed our dinner at 1849 and it's kid friendly as well... the tartare and ribs were amazing, and the haha burger was great . Chocolate soufflé was more of a lava cake than traditional soufflé but still pretty darn tasty. Recommend this place for a classier family dining experience :) looks like some tables get some nice sunset views as well.

Yelp
Beautiful open air restaurant in the shopping plaza. The food was fantastic and so fresh. We did wait a long time for what seemed like a slow night but we weren't in a rush so it was fine. The food was really yummy and we ate a lot. The tuna was different from any way I've ever had it before. It was a found loin shape and had a bit too much going on. It was so much tuna I felt bad wasting it because I just could never eat a portion that big it was almost seasoned the way you would season a pork as well. Not my vibes but wasn't bad.

Yelp
Last evening in Kaua'i and sadly no reservation but still able to score a spot at the bar with full menu at five. Had the sampler beer- excellent, off the appetizer menu: Ahi Tartare, Waygu Flank steak, and Brussels sprouts all were awesome. Couldn't resist dessert either and it was epic too!

Dina S.

Yelp
Went here as a last minute anniversary dinner. We were looking for a place that sold whole fried fish but wow was this way more than expected!! The fish was cooked to perfection and perfectly flaky. We also got the miso butterfish and it literally tasted like you're eating actual butter. The service was the best we had on the whole island. When you enter it is very casual and lowkey but the service tops most fine dining places. We are so sad that we found it the day before we leave but it will forever be a memory here that perfectly ties the trip together! Can't wait to be back !!
google avatar

Yelp
The ramen was the best we ever had and so was the burger! Definitely the best meal we had on the island! The cocktails were great as well! The ribs were a little chewy but still had good flavor! The dessert was fantastic as well! The service was great and the staff was very friendly with great recommendations! The restaurant is beautiful and very well decorated!

Yelp
Definitely a must try spot if you're in Kauai! The service, food, and drink was 10/10. The workers, from the host, the manager, the servers walking by all greeted us with a warm hello as we walked in. We ordered the Mai Tai and Poipu Breeze for drinks. The Mai Tai was good but the Poipu Breeze was refreshing, tart, and light. For food we ordered the Wagyu Flank Steak Pipikaula and honestly it was our favorite thing on the menu! Dry aged wagyu steak on local poi topped with cherry tomatoes and micro greens. For entrees HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Misobutterfish. It's tender, flavorful, and just amazing. The seared ahi was presented beautifully but it didn't wow me like the Pipikaula and Misobutterfish. Definitely coming back here next trip to Kauai!

Yelp
We always eat at Eating House when we come to Kauai. Great food and service with fair prices. We started with the pork and shrimp potstickers -perfect little snacks full of flavor! Also love the complimentary sesame chili edamame!! I could eat a bucket! We also loved the fried cauliflower and brussel sprouts- feels sorta healthy and delish! The gochu jang chicken was good and spicy. The butterfish is a go to staple- crispy rice, veggies and miso marinated butterfish in a hot bowl! The star is the ramen! Wow!! Full of meaty goodness, chewy noodles, and a broth that is to die for! It's so filling you will have leftovers and you will want to take it to go! We finished with the birthday dessert chocolate- very good! And the halo halo - the only disappointment of the night. If you're expecting a true halo halo like the Philippines you will be disappointed. Soupy and mostly just one type of ice cream with a few toppings. Overall a great experience!

Yelp
We had eaten at Roy's in Maui a few years ago and on our trip to Kauai we saw that Eating House was a sister restaurant and decided we had to give it a try. It's in a nice shopping center on the second story with a really great view. We got there just before our 5pm reservation and were seated as soon as the doors opened. The waitstaff were all super friendly and helpful. We ordered a few drinks, the Poipu Breeze and the Homegrown. Both were excellent, the Homegrown definitely had more Hawaiian vibes though. For food my wife got the blackened ahi and I got the butter fish. The ahi was excellent, with tons of flavor and the brussel sprouts with them were wonderful. Now if you've never had butter fish from Roy's, you have to give it a try. This one was served in a hot pot with rice and veggies with a sauce on the side. Needless to say, this was an excellent dish! We ended with a molten cake that was piping hot and had an incredible raspberry sauce with it. Also our little one got a super cute dessert with her meal as well. We had a fantastic meal, with great service, and an incredible view. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We dined under a reservation on 9/17 and we were anticipating a delicious meal and a dining experience we would remember.  Well, we did achieve one of our  goals...and it wasn't a delicious meal.  Now to be fair this place does appeal to some folks but tonight...not to us.  It started with us not being seated at our reservation time and then our meals did not arrive for another 45 minutes from the time we placed our order.  We ordered the Slow Braised Honey Mustard Grilled Beef Short Ribs, but what we received was "Pot Roast" with grill marks.  Believe me we have eaten a lot of Pot Roast over the years, so we immediately recognized,  tasted, and shredded the beef with our forks...no knife needed. It came with Au Gratin Potatoes, Green Beans,  Kale, Hanalei Poi, and Lomi Lomi Tomato.  No matter how you dressed it up...it was still expensive Pot Roast.  Our meal was really a bust.  The open air restaurant was on the second floor, so not only do you get to experience the trade winds, but there is a great view of a beautiful sunset, and the dining area is also open with hard "uncomfortable" wooden chairs.  As I mentioned earlier this type of restaurant does appeal to some folks but not to us. Sorry no food photos.  It wasn't worth it.

Yelp
We arrived less than ten minutes before our 6 PM reservation, but the teenage hostess made us sit on the bench outside and twiddle our thumbs until exactly 6:00. We were then ushered into a half-empty restaurant. Another couple who arrived the same time as us but without a reservation was turned away, despite the restaurant remaining half-empty during our entire dinner. Our waitress seemed frazzled, and the service was more rushed than in previous visits. Still, we love the menu here, and the kitchen never disappoints, so the young front of house staff just needs a bit more experience or training.

Yelp
Our server Michael was awesome. He explained the menu items really well and was very friendly, he made our dining experience outstanding. What can I say about Eating House that you may not already know. Quality food with exceptional flavor, it is Roy's after all. If you haven't tried Eating House then it's a must try at least once in your life. It's not overly expensive so don't be afraid to eat good food and enjoy life every so often.

Yelp
Eating House is an upscale restaurant in Koloa and part of Roy Yamaguchis family of restaurants. We came on a Friday night with reservation but restaurant may have been controlling volumes as it took awhile to get seated and be attended to. However once we placed our order, everything came at a good pace and was coursed out. Ahi Tartare - pretty tasty. Bread came with a nice light char and very buttery, which can overwhelm the flavor of the tartare so would chase it instead There was a new item that was a fried and mushroom item, essentially a large doughy takoyaki. A bit too heavily bready though sauce was a nice complement Caesar Salad - was a good bite and fine Honey Short Ribs - tender and the hanalei poi added a nice flavor when you get a bit of it. Otherwise ate a bit more bland than expected. Au gratin potatoes were good though! Service was overall nice

Yelp
First night arriving in Kauai. The food and ambiance were both good. Servers very friendly and efficient. My salad was too balsamic for me but overall ok. The chocolate soufflé was amazing!

Yelp
Great food, new chef has developed new items for menu and kindly left signature edamame as a starter. If you want to go fancier while on Kauai, go to Roy Yamaguchi eatery! Tasting menu is very good. We took it twice during one week, the team maintains great quality. Four "acts" - tartar, flank steak, juicy lamb and deeply fried mochi pie to polish your dinner. Don't go for snapper (whole tail snapper) -- too many bones, very hard to eat. Aesthetically also not perfect having this fish on your plate "looking" at you. Hmm. At least, controversially to me. Dessert menu is amazing! Ask for coffee with brandy (Koloa coffee) as a pairing to your dessert. The team is nice and friendly. Vibrant place, clients are stylish

Yelp
We had reservations and were sat promptly. We had a fun view of the kitchen which provided a little entertainment. Our waiter was great. We had the fried cauliflower and brussel sprouts for an appetizer, short ribs, and butter fish for entrees. The short ribs were tender and didn't need a knife to cut. Same as the fish. The plating of the food was done well. This was a nice place and had a nice vibe. I would come back.

Yelp
Informed hostess we had reservations and she couldn't find it, then she realized I had made it for the Waikiki location, but she still accommodated us with what I believe was the best table in the restaurant with an open unobstructed view of the ocean. The ambiance was very comfortable and felt like dinner at someone's beautiful coastal lanai. Service was impeccable and staff and waitress were very attentive. Food was excellent as always and keeps up to the high standards that Roy Yamaguchi sets for all his venues and never disappoints and made me even miss his places in Las Vegas. Highly recommended as a must try while visiting Kauai!
