"Iconic chef Roy Yamaguchi helped popularize Hawaiian-fusion food a generation ago, but at Eating House 1849 he takes a delicious detour with dishes inspired by Portuguese, Spanish, and Filipino flavors. This "plantation cuisine" evokes the immigrant dishes served in the mid-1800s, when the state's first restaurant—a Honolulu establishment called Eating House—opened (according to legend). Yamaguchi brings some serious chops to the table: He trained at the Culinary Institute of America before serving as executive chef in Los Angeles 's La Serene and winning a James Beard Award. The menu shifts seasonally, according to what farmers, foragers, ranchers, and fishermen produce. Expect delicacies like a beef-and-wild-boar burger and pork lumpia with green papaya. Cap it all off with cinnamon-dusted malasadas (Portuguese doughnuts) with Koloa Rum sauce!"

This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. From the presentation of the meals, to taste of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks, and most importantly being absolutely doted on by our waiters Mikey and Elise. Thank you for spoiling us! We’ll definitely be back. Hot tip: get the waygu appetizer- it can’t be missed.

Went for a Mother’s Day dinner on vacation and we had a wonderful time dining here. Even for a large group the accommodation was great and we didn’t feel crowded at all. Our waiter Michael and his waiting assist were also very tentative to our table and made a huge difference in our dining experience! The food was also outstanding, and Michael was also very knowledgeable about the menu and what items pair well together :))

Google
Excellent server who gave great recommendations and let me sample the poi (I can't remember his name but he said he raised his kids on poi and it made them very strong and healthy 😆) they start You off with complimentary edamame which is nice. GET THE POT STICKERS, BLUE CRAB FRITTERS, Pineapple upside down cake, halo halo, and the local clam dish! All were great! My only suggestion is to tone down some of the bright lighting, which was pretty intense.

Google
Ribs were a wonderful recommendation from our server. Drinks and entrees were good. I made reservations for a special dinner around sunset and we were seated in a poor location with no mention for our visit. Vibe is all over the place with kids and iPads and people in causal beach wear.

Google
Every detail of our experience at this restaurant was incredible. Attentive service; never had an empty glass of water, when leaving the table to use the restroom the table engineer would come by to refold the napkin. Our meal was spectacular and the views were magical. I had the lemongrass shrimp, butterfish and the pineapple upside down cake. Everything was cooked perfectly. The butterfish was melt in your mouth. The rest of the group has the chocolate lava cake and it was to die for. Highly recommend treating yourself to a special meal here.

Google
Food is darn good yummy!! Service is not consistent. Some of the staff are super, others not so much. The owner / manager is very attentive and responsive to situations that needs his attention. I do see locals coming in and that is always a good sign. This is a great place to enjoy a meal. GET RESERVATIONS… it will make things easier.

Google
We had the shrimp appetizer, blackened ahi, and pineapple upside down cake. One of our favorite meals on Kauai. Really tasty and a lovely view at sunset.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite spots to have ramen! Had it for the first time 7 years ago and I'm still in love. Eating House has a fantastic menu and nice open seating, but we did make a reso beforehand. I already knew I was going to get the ramen, but we decided to get two appetizers too. The blue crab and corn fritters were okay - I wish there was less bonito flakes/less ingredients to really let the crab and corn shine. The potstickers were yummy! The star of the show of course was the ramen, which came in a huge bowl (enough for me to take home for later too). I asked for extra chili oil to make it more spicy, which brought it to the perfect level for me. Plenty of pork belly, shrimp, and ground pork and other delicious toppings. An unexpected but welcome twist was the addition of the grilled tomato - a nice bite of acidity!

Yelp
An excellent meal at @chefroyyamaguchi's @eatinghouse1849! Innovative take on Hawaiian cuisine with an Asian influence. The melting chocolate souffle was ‍ and is not to be missed. for the pork ribs, the potstickers, and the brussels and cauliflower. Loved all the food from start to finish. Service was a little mixed. Excellent water service, waitress checked on us a few times, but we ordered dessert sufficiently in advance (20 minutes notice required) and still waited probably double that to get it. Took a little bit of time to get our food order in too. But they had a nice birthday treat for my dad's birthday and overall it was a great meal. Yelp
My wife and I stopped in for a bowl of ramen while on our honeymoon and it definitely scratched the itch. The menu is non traditional and everything seems well done - I'd like to come back and try more items sometime. Great vibe with good views in a beachy environment and our waitress was the most friendly one we've had this trip.

Yelp
Wrapped up my birthday month with an amazing dinner at Eating House 1849! This beautiful spot, created by Chef Roy Yamaguchi, is located in a stunning shopping center and offers a perfect blend of island flavors and classic dishes. (There's also another location in Honolulu if you're ever nearby!) Some of my favorites from the night: Ahi Sashimi - so fresh and flavorful Crispy Brussels Sprouts - addictively good Lemongrass Kauai Shrimp - packed with aromatic spices Paella - hearty and delicious Ribeye - cooked to perfection Definitely a great way to kick off the end of my birthday month!

Yelp
It's a bit on the higher end. If you want to go to a nice restaurant, this is a good one! A bit fancier vibes. Some fake candles on the table. Our server was Dante, and he's a 5 star server! He was super educated on the menu and gave us good recommendations. The tartare was my favorite app. The shrimp was a good one. The sauce was flavorful! The steak app was mehh. My ahi entree was good. My friend said her rib eye wasn't fatty enough and felt it was as more like a New York strip. My other friends enjoyed the butterfish dish a lot. Pineapple dessert was our favorite. Halo halo tasted good. The lava cake was meh.

Yelp
The service, first and foremost, was incredible! Everyone was so polite and made the entire dinner so fun! I shared the potstickers with the table and they were delicious!! Easily the crowd favorite. For my entree I got the boar burger, and it just wasn't my favorite - it was too sweet for me. But my husband got the steak and it was cooked perfectly and my parents had the short ribs and they were delicious! Together we shared the chocolate soufflé and it was delightful! Everything was so flavorful and fun, we highly recommend! The restaurant is gorgeous! The servers and hostesses were so friendly and helpful!! Worth the stop in!

Yelp
This location is in a nice free and upscale shopping center adjacent to Merriman's. Their Happy Hour begins at 4:00 and ends at 5:00. The food is truly farm to table and you can taste freshness in their seafood. Our server was so nice and gave me a special chocolate cake for my birthday. If you do come, please try the delicious seafood, as it can't get any fresher than here!

Yelp
Delicious drinks. Especially the tropical elixir! Crab corn fritters fabulous and filling.

Yelp
Amazing service, beautiful space and ambiance, great food! We very much enjoyed our dinner at 1849 and it's kid friendly as well... the tartare and ribs were amazing, and the haha burger was great . Chocolate soufflé was more of a lava cake than traditional soufflé but still pretty darn tasty. Recommend this place for a classier family dining experience :) looks like some tables get some nice sunset views as well.

Yelp
We came here for dinner again and our family really enjoyed the fried Brussels and cauliflower. The steak and fish are worth trying too. One of my favorite spots for dinner on the island.

Yelp
Definitely a must try spot if you're in Kauai! The service, food, and drink was 10/10. The workers, from the host, the manager, the servers walking by all greeted us with a warm hello as we walked in. We ordered the Mai Tai and Poipu Breeze for drinks. The Mai Tai was good but the Poipu Breeze was refreshing, tart, and light. For food we ordered the Wagyu Flank Steak Pipikaula and honestly it was our favorite thing on the menu! Dry aged wagyu steak on local poi topped with cherry tomatoes and micro greens. For entrees HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Misobutterfish. It's tender, flavorful, and just amazing. The seared ahi was presented beautifully but it didn't wow me like the Pipikaula and Misobutterfish. Definitely coming back here next trip to Kauai!

Yelp
Eating House 1849 Koloa from Roy Yamaguchi is a great time that needs to be experienced. We kicked off our meal with Roy's Original Szechuan Baby Back Ribs. These beauties fell off the bone with a gentle nudge and were a perfect prelude to the feast that followed. I went for the Misoyaki Butterfish Kamameshi, a dish that struck a beautiful balance. The misoyaki marinated butterfish was tender and flavorful, melding effortlessly with the seasoned rice. Every bite was a symphony of taste and texture, a true testament to the chef's skill. My wife chose the 1849 Spicy Ramen Bowl. Now, I wouldn't call it the best ramen ever, but it was a well-executed, delicious bowl. The broth was rich and inviting, the noodles just the right texture, and the spice level hit that sweet spot--fiery enough to be exciting but not overwhelming.

Beautiful restaurant, excellent service, great views, nice shopping in walking distance, and a great vibe.

Yelp
Flew from outer island to celebrate our anniversary, just like we did 5 years ago to celebrate our honeymoon. Called to make a reservation, where they asked if we were celebrating anything. I happily said our anniversary- which is wished us an early salutation. This review is a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars. While our food was amazing and tasty, the service was just not up to par. We have dined at many Roy restaurants between the Big Island and Oahu. My review of this location 5 years ago had me so excited to redine here but was sadly disappointed. Upon check in, seating and dinner service - no one asked if we were celebrating anything. This wouldn't have been such a big let down, if they didn't 1) ask upon booking reservation and 2) the service I received 5y reflected this kind of personalized service. I mean we flew islands for our anniversary dinner. After our dessert order was put in and we were waiting, is when our waiter Jason finally casually mentioned that we might we celebrating an anniversary. The entire dining experience was already dampened by the non-existent acknowledgement. Another thing I noticed was the GM making his rounds to each table throughout dinner service, even stopped at the tables flanking us and made eye contact with me multiple times - but failed to stop by. He briefly acknowledged us after our entrees came but offered no warm conversation- just a check off a list. The final tick was our departure. Although the hospitality severely lacked throughout dinner service, we were leaving with happy full bellies. Just a few tables remained since we were nearing closing, but no one thanked or wished us off. No matter that the GM and two servers were at the exit, or workers were present at checkin table - no acknowledgment was made. We were about to descend down the stairs when the kind bartender yelled to us to have a great night. I understand the holidays are here, restaurant is packed and everyone is busy but acknowledgement doesn't not take much effort or time. The dining experience left us so unsettled that I don't know if we'll ever care to return to this location. Being one of the few locals dining in, we were left feeling like we stuck out like a sore thumb amongst all the tourist who received exemplary service. What a shame.

Yelp
Beautiful open air restaurant in the shopping plaza. The food was fantastic and so fresh. We did wait a long time for what seemed like a slow night but we weren't in a rush so it was fine. The food was really yummy and we ate a lot. The tuna was different from any way I've ever had it before. It was a found loin shape and had a bit too much going on. It was so much tuna I felt bad wasting it because I just could never eat a portion that big it was almost seasoned the way you would season a pork as well. Not my vibes but wasn't bad.
google avatar

Kristina M.

Yelp
Beautiful plantation style restaurant with delicious food and cocktails. Service was good and helpful with recommendations.
google avatar

Yelp
Ramen noodles were mushy. They remade them but they weren't any better. Might be the type of noodles they used. But broth was tasty. The steaks were bland. I think some seasoning would have gone a long way. I would have rated this place a 5 star just for the "slow braised honey mustard grilled beef short ribs" alone but half the group got the steak. Service was very good. The Mongolian bbq baby back ribs were good. Mashed potatoes were very flavorful and smooth. Pineapple cake wasn't the best but the ice cream that came with it was. The soufflé was excellent. If you just got the bbq ribs as appetizer, short ribs as entree, and the soufflé as dessert, this would be a 10/10. I would definitely come back for those 3.

Yelp
First night arriving in Kauai. The food and ambiance were both good. Servers very friendly and efficient. My salad was too balsamic for me but overall ok. The chocolate soufflé was amazing!

Yelp
Our second visit to this amazing spot. Crispy Brussels were the perfect app. We had chicken, ahi, steak and the burger among all of and everyone loved their entrees. We of course ended with the chocolate soufflé cake--perfection. Can't wait until we can return! Love the service, beautiful views and chill vibes even with kiddos.

Jen C.

Yelp
Arrived 10 minutes before reservation time but they adhered to the time pretty strictly. Server was nice, no nonsense and very quick. We got Brussels sprouts/cauliflower as appetizer which was one of our favorites of the night. The Caesar salad was just okay; the crouton was very tasty though. I got the ramen which was just okay. It was fairly salty and not spicy to me at all. It is a large portion and left me very full. My husband got the steak which he enjoyed. We noted it was a special occasion (getting married) and they were kind enough to give us a free dessert. Overall a decent meal that I found okay but I may have been overexcited by hyped reviews.

Yelp
We had eaten at Roy's in Maui a few years ago and on our trip to Kauai we saw that Eating House was a sister restaurant and decided we had to give it a try. It's in a nice shopping center on the second story with a really great view. We got there just before our 5pm reservation and were seated as soon as the doors opened. The waitstaff were all super friendly and helpful. We ordered a few drinks, the Poipu Breeze and the Homegrown. Both were excellent, the Homegrown definitely had more Hawaiian vibes though. For food my wife got the blackened ahi and I got the butter fish. The ahi was excellent, with tons of flavor and the brussel sprouts with them were wonderful. Now if you've never had butter fish from Roy's, you have to give it a try. This one was served in a hot pot with rice and veggies with a sauce on the side. Needless to say, this was an excellent dish! We ended with a molten cake that was piping hot and had an incredible raspberry sauce with it. Also our little one got a super cute dessert with her meal as well. We had a fantastic meal, with great service, and an incredible view. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Last evening in Kaua'i and sadly no reservation but still able to score a spot at the bar with full menu at five. Had the sampler beer- excellent, off the appetizer menu: Ahi Tartare, Waygu Flank steak, and Brussels sprouts all were awesome. Couldn't resist dessert either and it was epic too!
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
We arrived less than ten minutes before our 6 PM reservation, but the teenage hostess made us sit on the bench outside and twiddle our thumbs until exactly 6:00. We were then ushered into a half-empty restaurant. Another couple who arrived the same time as us but without a reservation was turned away, despite the restaurant remaining half-empty during our entire dinner. Our waitress seemed frazzled, and the service was more rushed than in previous visits. Still, we love the menu here, and the kitchen never disappoints, so the young front of house staff just needs a bit more experience or training.

Yelp
I visited Kauai with my ladyfriend a couple weeks ago to celebrate our 4th anniversary, and I made reservations at the best recommended restaurants in the Poipu area, and Eating House 1849 was on that list.Owned by celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi. It is conveniently located in a shopping plaza close to our resort at the Sheraton, and I recommend taking the Aloha Spirit shuttle there as Uber is unreliable on the island.Service and food was excellent. We both had the honey glazed short ribs, and it was absolutely delicious and you barely had to cut it with a knife it was so tender. They even gave us a little mousse dessert for our anniversary on the house.Wonderful time, and then did a little shopping afterwards. Absolute must to try in the Poipu area

Amanda B.

Yelp
Dinner and service was absolutely amazing! Potstickers for an appetizer were so delicious and the kids each got a sprinkle cookie ice cream sandwich included for dessert. Great experience!
google avatar

Ralf L.

Yelp
We did not have a reservation and were able to get a table are bar. Server was very friendly and helpful. We had the tuna tartar, butterfish and Paella. All were very good and tasty. Be sure to make a reservation a few days ahead for a nicer table with a view of the ocean.
google avatar

Kelli A.

Yelp
Best meal we've had in Kauai! We ordered the potstickers, tomato and mozzarella salad, the butterfish, salmon bowl, short rib, steak and soufflés. The butterfish was by far my favorite- great flavor. The chocolate soufflés were divine!

Yelp
Our server Michael was awesome. He explained the menu items really well and was very friendly, he made our dining experience outstanding. What can I say about Eating House that you may not already know. Quality food with exceptional flavor, it is Roy's after all. If you haven't tried Eating House then it's a must try at least once in your life. It's not overly expensive so don't be afraid to eat good food and enjoy life every so often.
google avatar

Yelp
We loved this place. The bartender, Liv, was awesome - friendly, made great recommendations and was hustling on her own the first night we went. The food is amazing and the drinks were outstanding. It was so good that we came back again the following night (which we never do). The burger is amazing, as is the sashimi, chicken bowl and butterfish (black cod). We will come back to this place. *Tip - reservations fill up, but you can still walk in for a table and wait or check out the bar area where open seats are up for grabs. If you're lucky, you may get Liv to help with your selection!

Yelp
Eating House is an upscale restaurant in Koloa and part of Roy Yamaguchis family of restaurants. We came on a Friday night with reservation but restaurant may have been controlling volumes as it took awhile to get seated and be attended to. However once we placed our order, everything came at a good pace and was coursed out. Ahi Tartare - pretty tasty. Bread came with a nice light char and very buttery, which can overwhelm the flavor of the tartare so would chase it instead There was a new item that was a fried and mushroom item, essentially a large doughy takoyaki. A bit too heavily bready though sauce was a nice complement Caesar Salad - was a good bite and fine Honey Short Ribs - tender and the hanalei poi added a nice flavor when you get a bit of it. Otherwise ate a bit more bland than expected. Au gratin potatoes were good though! Service was overall nice

Yelp
Great food, new chef has developed new items for menu and kindly left signature edamame as a starter. If you want to go fancier while on Kauai, go to Roy Yamaguchi eatery! Tasting menu is very good. We took it twice during one week, the team maintains great quality. Four "acts" - tartar, flank steak, juicy lamb and deeply fried mochi pie to polish your dinner. Don't go for snapper (whole tail snapper) -- too many bones, very hard to eat. Aesthetically also not perfect having this fish on your plate "looking" at you. Hmm. At least, controversially to me. Dessert menu is amazing! Ask for coffee with brandy (Koloa coffee) as a pairing to your dessert. The team is nice and friendly. Vibrant place, clients are stylish

Yelp
This was an extremely nice dinner. Reservations a must. Service was friendly and restaurant has a beautiful sunset view if you book your times right. Food was excellent.

Yelp
I don't remember what we had specifically ordered, but the food was so good, that we came back another day for more. The service was impeccable, ambiance was great. Make sure you make reservations as the restaurant gets busy for dinner time.
google avatar

Aimee R.

Yelp
I got either food poisoning or butterfish poisoning from dining here. The butterfish was recommended by the server and after being extremely ill overnight and still sick, I read that butterfish can actually commonly make you sick. I wish I knew was a possibility before getting this dish, as I was supposed to fly out today and need to extend my stay in Hawai'i, costing $1,200. I read in Japan, butterfish is actually banned and health warnings are given. I wish I had a health warning :/

Yelp
We had reservations and were sat promptly. We had a fun view of the kitchen which provided a little entertainment. Our waiter was great. We had the fried cauliflower and brussel sprouts for an appetizer, short ribs, and butter fish for entrees. The short ribs were tender and didn't need a knife to cut. Same as the fish. The plating of the food was done well. This was a nice place and had a nice vibe. I would come back.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
The service and food was excellent especially with our large party. The staff were attentive and helpful with suggestions.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Informed hostess we had reservations and she couldn't find it, then she realized I had made it for the Waikiki location, but she still accommodated us with what I believe was the best table in the restaurant with an open unobstructed view of the ocean. The ambiance was very comfortable and felt like dinner at someone's beautiful coastal lanai. Service was impeccable and staff and waitress were very attentive. Food was excellent as always and keeps up to the high standards that Roy Yamaguchi sets for all his venues and never disappoints and made me even miss his places in Las Vegas. Highly recommended as a must try while visiting Kauai!

Yelp
Overall, we had an ok experience. Nothing exceptional, from the service to food. We had reservations but felt like there was a lot of waiting, to check-in, get seated, order and receive our food. Our reservation was later in dinner service. The dining room was maybe two-thirds full when we got seated. Our main server was absent most of the dining experience and the effort was quite minimal. We didn't even know her name until we saw it on the bill! In terms of the food, we got the fried Brussels sprouts and cauliflower as an appetizer- good flavor but it was way too oily to finish. Husband got the braised short rib entree, he said it was tender but it looked quite tough to cut apart. Doesn't short rib usually fall apart with a fork? He was eating it like a steak! I got the misoyaki butterfish, the fish was so soft and delicious! The Asian vegetables included bean sprouts, napa cabbage, sliced mushrooms and snow peas. Unfortunately the snow peas were burnt and overcooked. While the fish was delicious, I did not feel the dish itself was worth the steep price. For dessert, we got the chocolate soufflé with ice cream. The soufflé was more like a lava cake consistency. Nonetheless, the best part of the entire meal.

Yelp
The food and service at Eating House are wonderful. The severs are very attentive and friendly. The drinks fron the bar are superb! Kudos to the bartender for pouring a great bloody mary. My wife and I both ordered the Ramen and it was great. The flavors of shrimp and pork together were really good and the portion leaves you not going hungry. I would recommend Eating House 1849 to anyone who is looking for an over the top dining experience.

Yelp
Braaaaaaa. Ramen is meeeeeaaaaan. Short rib roast was mento. Burga mento. Maura, call Dwayne.

Yelp
Food was exceptional. Atmosphere could use some work as well as the service. We arrived for our reservation 10 minutes early and were sat 15 minutes past our reservation time. It was our anniversary, which we put in the reservation, and it was totally overlooked. The hostess did congratulate us and said she would let our server know. However, our server never acknowledged it and we received a very normal experience. The cuisine here is great, but they definitely missed out on making a special dining experience for their guests.

Yelp
I stopped in to order their pineapple dessert after hearing multiple reviews while visiting this side of the island. I placed a to go order and the dessert came out piping hot which I appreciated. The mix of the cake and ice cream was a perfect pairing and the dessert held up well to go.

Yelp
Food was very good (except bread was not exceptional) and view excellent, however my pina colada tasted like alcohol free and was a mix. Service is excellent.

Yelp
The food was incredible. I think this area will tend to have restaurants that are inherently touristy and overpriced. This is not one. Our entrees were so well made, flavorful and interesting. The margarita was unimpressive and so was the ramen. But our party tried the potstickers, ribs, short ribs, ribeye, and tuna and all were very impressive. The portions were also very large which was surprising! I would recommend! Service is not great.

Yelp
Very tasty food. The well-seasoned burger was delicious. We also had the butterfish and ahi, all perfectly prepared. Service was outstanding. Definitely one of the more upscale places on the island, and the prices reflect that.

Yelp
I am often skeptical of restaurants in shopping centers, but I was pleasantly surprised by Eating House! We loved the crudo appetizer and the short rib was melt in your mouth! I was thrilled by our waiter's ability to help us navigate the gluten free options on the menu. The icing on the cake was that the chocolate soufflé was gluten free (and delicious)!

Yelp
This was our first night dinner coming from Oahu having had AMA AMA at Au'lani the night before. We love Roy's so this experience was to par with our knowledge of Roy's cuisine. For the price- this dinner was so much better than the overpriced meal at Au'lani. I would have bypassed our overpriced Disney meal if I knew I was going to find this place the next day. We got lucky with reservations. If open table says they're booked, call in and ask. You might get lucky with a table like we did :)

Yelp
Had a reservation but still waited for another 15-20 min. The food portions are large. Between two people, we ordered one item each and we absolutely struggled to finish both. We also wanted to try dessert and had to sit for a bit to digest for some extra room because the entrees are also rich/heavy. The 1849 Spicy Ramen Bowl is pretty good. I was hesitant to order ramen at such a restaurant but it just sounded good. Short ribs was decent, reminds me of an entree you're served at a wedding, but I wouldn't particularly lean towards it if I were to visit again. The warm apple volcano dessert was very good and glad we made room for it.
