CSA Boxes and Farm Deliveries Serving San Francisco During Coronavirus - Eater SF

"Eatwell Farm has been holding it down at the Ferry Plaza Farmers’ Market for 27 years. Lorraine Walker is leaning into her existing CSA program and expanding delivery sites into a long list of options, and does home delivery on Saturdays for SF and the East Bay." - Becky Duffett

We came for a tomato sauce making event and it was really neat! The owner brought us some strawberries to snack on while we cooked and invited us to go to the brewery down the street for a jug band performance. Some of our group stayed overnight and camped and had delicious biscuits in the morning! Lots of cats around that were pretty friendly. Fun way to spend a Saturday!

Love it! I helped in the fields during the lavender harvest, which was both beautiful, rewarding, and fun! Lorraine makes tasty meals out of local ingredients and the whole experience makes you feel like family. Join this CSA!

🐣The. Eggs. Will. Change. Your. Life. The most magical farm in the world! All of the love that goes into this farm is apparent in the taste and quality of food here. Truly world-class and full of love and flavor! Come experience a sample of Eat(ing)well. ❤️

Had an amazing experience camping out here for a long weekend. Super friendly and amazing host and the sunrise/moonrise and sunsets were stunning!

Been a member of Eatwell CSA for almost 10 years - so grateful for Lorraine and the team at Eatwell for bringing seasonal produce into our home year-round. The newsletters with recipes that use produce from the boxes and updates on the farm are so helpful :) The events at the farm are beautiful and very community-oriented.

Google
This review is regarding the Farm Box. Unfortunately a box was replaced with a half size box, and they did agree to refund the mistake - but never did, even upon follow ups. Don't feel comfortable purchasing the farm box after this, and do not recommend this service over others that have consistent customer service and accountability.

Google
We have been CSA members for many years. Nigel, Lorraine and the office crew are very welcoming. They have a great newsletter that comes with each box with recipes and tales about the farm. It feels so supportive and the quality of the produce is tops. Very fresh. I love "cooking out of the box", very creative and healthy. Their eggs are amazing as well. They also have many extras you can buy. I just got some Sevilla oranges to make the best marmalade.

Dave Baker

Google
Amazing produce box, delivered right to your neighborhood! Great variety of vegetables and fruit and amazing quality eggs at a very reasonable price. One thing that I really appreciate is having fresh produce during the winter when most farmers markets are closed and most farms aren't producing much of anything. During this time the farm still works just as hard to fill the box with fresh vegetables. The owners are very responsive to any issues with the produce and send replacements out with your next box.

Yelp
Update: looked at many of the other CSAs that have pick up spots in the the east bay and not many are in Alameda, the ones that are, require weekly subscriptions. I really enjoy having the variety of a CSA, market and farmers market. Also! The summer bounty has been great. Love all the stone fruit and the sun gold tomatoes - they are $6 a basket at the farmers market and they are included in our boxes! So juicy and sweet. Yes some of the fruit is 'ugly' but just as delicious and on occasion squished/moldy - but for $2/lb versus $4/lb - I'm okay with that! I usually just cut it off and eat the rest. It's just part of the life cycle of fresh food, and I am sure that boxing, stacking and then moving/delivering all these boxes isn't the most delicate or easy task! If it was a big issue I would just reach out to Lorraine directly and I am sure she will make it right for you.

Carol P.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to our first box but were extremely disappointed in the quality of the produce - both the fruits and vegetables. We cancelled our subscription after week one - but have 3 more boxes to pick up since you must pre-order a month at a time. I'm rating it a 2 instead of a 1 because I very much like the CSA model, in theory. We have subscribed to other CSAs in the past and found the quality to be higher. We tried this one because the pick up location was within walking distance of our home. I am reading the five star reviews and wondering how our first impression can be so completely different.

Luis T.

Yelp
Disappointed on the quality, not even my Instacart shopper did this terrible picking fruits and veggies. I received green potatoes I had to throw out and tomatoes past their prime. We just received our last box today , 4 weeks was too long. The peaches and nectarines in the picture were in our box today, disappointing. I went with it because my wife liked the idea but there are better local areas in the Suisun Valley that are easy on the wallet, on the eye and on my tastebuds.

Yelp
What an amazing CSA! I love the fact they have a box for 2 and very reasonable prices. Vegetables are always fresh and very flavorful.

Yelp
I really enjoy my CSA membership to Eatwell. They have consistently good quality produce, they let you put your membership on hold for vacation, offer biweekly deliveries to local homes in the neighborhood with flexible pick-up hours, and they have member events like Strawberry Days and tomato canning. Oh and they have delicious eggs, as well. The variety isn't incredible, esp. during winter, but no less so than any of the other CSAs that I have tried. I find them far superior to Farm Fresh to You and Planet Organics -- two more commercial CSAs that offer more flexibility but didn't offer either the quality or the genuine farm experience I was hoping for. I also used to have a membership with Two Small Farms, but they have since disbanded and offer CSAs individually. I found they had too much lettuce in their deliveries -- I was perpetually throwing food away. Last thing - I love their rosemary salt!

Yelp
I've been a member on and off for the better part of a decade. What a wonderful CSA! I look forward to every pick up. I think it's great that they have a subscription that allows for two boxes a month (as opposed to every week) which is just right for our household of two. They also have amazing eggs and specials you can add on to each pick up. Having a fridge full of fresh produce encourages a seasonal, local, and healthy kitchen!

Yelp
First, to give this perspective: I do not ordinarily salt my food. Really. Now, understand, I am ADDICTED to rosemary salt ordered from Eatwell Farm. My "friend" brought some of this rosemary salt as a souvenir for me from her trip to San Francisco. I proceeded to apply it to my popcorn nightly. It's absolutely AWESOME! I ordered a case. (I'm totally not kidding. I wish I was! $130+ of SALT!!) I am now pushing it on others like crack! "Gifting" it to Phoenix area chefs and food artisans -- I've challenged a dude to use it in a creme brule. I have blown through half the case that came around December! I am out of control! And, the customer service was lovely. First, my email asking where I could buy this salt online. I was sent a Google link. Second, the hand written note that accompanied my case of salt, with a free sample of the tomato salt. Thank GOODNESS I don't like it as much. Seriously! I'm captivated by this SALT! WTF!?!

Yelp
I love being a part of Eatwell's CSA. They host member events that bring the community together, and most importantly, they take their role as stewards of the land very seriously. I know their produce is farmed with sustainable practices, and that knowledge makes everything I create just a little bit tastier.

Yelp
Sign up with Eatwell (or other area farm CSA programs) and you'll get nice-sized boxes full of fresh, seasonal, local, organic produce. Eatwell also offers free-range eggs and lavendar. And you can visit the farm or even camp there! Boxes are delivered to various locations. You designate your pick-up spot and then you pick up your box once a week or once every other week. This week's box included: brocolli, fuji apples, savoy cabbage, spinach, arugula, lettuce, daikon, sweet potatoes, mandarins, and chard. The box also includes a newsletter with news about the farm and recipes for the produce. So why participate in a CSA (community supported agriculture) instead of going to your local store? Because CSAs offer a direct way to connect to the place where your food is grown and the people that grow it. Through the CSA you can learn more about and contribute to sustainable agriculture. You'll be supporting a local family farm and eating fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies that are full of flavor and require less resources to deliver.

Yelp
Eatwell is a solid CSA with tons of variety year-round. The produce that I've received has been fresh and delicious. It is possible to scour the farmer's market and get organic produce for less, but I enjoy the challenge of cooking with a CSA box. Having to go through a whole box of produce with minimal waste also forces our household to eat more fruits and veggies than we would shopping independently. At the same time, I know that my money is supporting fair employment practices and a family who cares about organic agriculture and the environment. It's worth it for me, but definitely not for everyone. I would suggest people just getting started with CSA to try a sample small box subscription.

Yelp
I just completed my 4 box trial subscription and decided to renew again. I like that I don't have to give $$$$ of money up front and pray Mother Nature is kind (CSA experience on the East Coast). $29.00 a box for organic produce is beyond reasonable. I live off of one box and nothing goes to waste. Eating seasonal, means eating seasonal. Joining a CSA in the winter means lots of greens, root vegetables and cabbage. I have yet to become bored. I love getting the "potential list of items" email a few days before pick-up. I begin researching recipes so I don't eat braised garlicky kale & bacon every night until spring. After 4 weeks of living off the CSA boxes, my body is much healthier, skin is brighter and I feel great. There is more vegetables than fruit, however, I that is fine with me. If I want more fruit, I can always go to the neighborhood farmers market. I enjoy the personal touch of the newsletters. There customer service is professional and kind. I highly recommend Eatwell Farm.

Yelp
We have been members for about a year and are very pleased with quality and variety of fruits and vegetables we receive in our box. With only two people in our household, we find that 1 box every two weeks meets our needs. The food is extremely fresh and delicious. We also get a dozen organic eggs in each order (at a small extra cost) and they are fantastic!! Every box comes with an informative newsletter that includes a description of that week's order, recipes, and farm news. I really enjoy learning about the farm and the food I am eating. Needless to say, we are big fans of Eatwell Farm CSA. Highly recommended!!

Yelp
We signed up for this CSA a couple of months ago, after doing a lot of research into the various Bay Area CSA options. I've been really thrilled with having a huge supply of fresh veggies, fruit, and eggs in my house at all times, and I've been really happy with the variety of items. We've been eating so much better -- last night we had a beet & arugula salad, with goat cheese and walnuts, and the day before that we had a potato, zucchini, and fresh basil quiche. AWESOME. The customer service has also been fantastic. They forgot to sign me up for eggs the very first week, so I asked for double on the next delivery. Not a big deal to me at all, but I was especially thrilled when they gave me a free jar of lavender body scrub along with my next CSA box!

Yelp
Adore our CSA share. Sad that we are moving out of their area (aka near Los Angeles) and have to give up our share. Ripe but not too ripe veggies. Great trade box for when I can't stand any more cabbage. Wonderful absolutely fabulous tomatoes and I adored our trip to the farm to pick strawberries. I have such happy memories of that day and the kindness, knowledge, and just wondrous nature of the farmers.

Yelp
We just picked up our first CSA box last week, and it has been delicious! There was a great variety and quality of produce, and we're definitely looking forward to our next box. Eatwell has a very thoughtfully designed subscription process that allows a great deal of customization (e.g., every other week deliveries, placing boxes on hold, add-ons), and they will deliver directly to your residence in some locations for a fee. The newsletters have recipes and food storage/use tips, and they really make you feel like part of the family.

Yelp
we joined just over a month ago, and are LOVING our eatwell box. i signed up because i wanted a challenge of eating new and varied organic veggies, but i've found that it's really not challenging at all.... the produce is so good that even the simplest recipes i've prepared have been out of this world! my favorite box items so far have been veggies that i've tried in other people's cooking but have literally never bought myself before: arugula, green garlic, parsnips, leeks, sugar snap peas... most of the produce i've received so far is from the eatwell farm itself, although eatwell also purchases fruit and other items (including walnuts last month!) from nearby organic or biodynamic farms to keep the boxes interesting and varied. i've had several friends join and subsequently quit csa's because they simply couldn't find use for all of the produce they were receiving every week. granted we're relatively new, but we have yet to have this problem with our eatwell box. toward the end of the week i find myself wishing we had more! and if you're shopping csa's, one of the nice things about eatwell and some of the other larger farms is that you can put your box on hold for vacation, or can switch to an every-other-week pickup without penalty if the quantity of food gets overwhelming.

Yelp
I've been a CSA member for more years than I can recall -- certainly going back to the late 20th century. I've stayed with Eatwell because I feel like part of an extended family, tied to the land on which our family's dinner makings are grown. Eatwell Farm has had--and continues to have--a profoundly healthful impact on Bay Area households and families like ours. Thanks to Eatwell, I know what a fresh picked fava bean looks and tastes like (having picked them off a bush on the farm), and how delicious Tokyo turnips are--especially right out of the CSA box. Because of the many wonderful farm events for CSA members and guests, my daughter knows how beautiful and well cared for the land is where her food grows, has seen the chickens that lay the exquisitely delicious eggs she eats (and has gotten to hold them as chicks), and has experienced the joy of eating her absolute fill of strawberries fresh picked from the field. Nigel and Loraine are deeply committed to organic farming, permaculture, and even sustainable chicken breeding (with their black australorp flock). Loraine teaches children's cooking classes, shares delicious menus with every week's newsletter, and her softers (naturally fermented flavored "sodas") are out of this world. And don't even get me started about the EGGS! They are the best I've ever tasted. The also sell wonderful cosmetic products made from farm produce (like lavender). I always have to have a jar of the lavender-calendula ointment on hand for cuts, rashes and the like. It works wonders! I can't speak highly enough about Eatwell Farm and the folks who run it. Please consider signing up for a 4-box introductory subscription (with eggs!), and come to the farm for a weekend event. It could be life changing.

Mindy M.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh, organic produce! Each box has a nice variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. We have lots of fun trying things we might not think to purchase at the grocery store...turnips and fennel are new favorites! Each box includes a newsletter from the farm with great recipe suggestions and cooking tips. We joined about 6 months ago, and it brings so much joy to our home!

Yelp
We'd like to join the list of 5-stars for Eatwell Farms. Do you know what to do with daikon radish, kale and turnips? If not, this program will motivate you to learn to cook crazy veggie goodness. After being on the waiting list for about 5 months (worth the wait), we are picking up boxes 2 blocks away from our house and it is produce madness! Molly is great and VERY customer-service focused, and I can already see that this CSA will boost my health (and quite possibly lower blood pressure) in no time at all. Get on the wait list at a pickup location near you - it's amazing!!! Oh, and get the eggs - expensive, but you'll never buy them at Safeway again once you've discovered the sweet lusciousness of pastured eggs.

Sue W.

Yelp
Like other reviewers have said, signing up for Eatwell Farm's CSA has dramatically changed the way we eat. Getting a a box of super-fresh local produce every week is highly motivational -- it comes no matter what, and it would be a shame to waste it. I pour a big glass of wine then wash and oven-roast anything I can the day the box arrives (carrots, turnips, squash, leeks). That which cannot be roasted (chard, apples, oranges, spinach) is washed and chopped and bagged and stuck in the fridge, ready to go. Then we eat it all week and feel great about it. The price is *extremely* reasonable given the amount of organic fruit and vegetables you get, not to mention the money you save by *not* setting foot in a Whole Foods-type store and blowing an extra $15 on scented candles and chocolate truffles along with your veggies. Six stars!

Yelp
My husband and I just started with Eatwell one month ago, and we are HOOKED on our fresh fruit and veggies! Eating with the seasons is truly a liberating feeling, and we are eating healthier than ever. Eatwell is a great deal, great for your body, and just plain fun--who doesn't like getting a box of organic produce every week?

Jeff R.

Yelp
Last week I got a full bouquet of lavender. This week I got a huge bag of basil, a huge bag of parsley, and some Santa Rosa plums (to complement the Santa Rosa plums I just picked from my back yard). You get the point. Just inevitably, you get a lot of stuff with this program that you wouldn't buy yourself, or would buy in smaller quantities. In some cases it's fun - I had never myself cooked kale before, I'll continue to buy more. Green garlic was also new to me, in some ways it's better than standard garlic. But a lot of the time it's pretty blase. I don't really care for potatoes or cabbage or beets. I don't mind them on occasion, but I don't need a continual re-supply. And the lavender was kind of fun to experiment with, but I ended up throwing most of it away Going by practical considerations, you're better off just getting what you want at the store. If I went to a Farmer's Market, I could get just the stuff I wanted, of similar quality, for maybe half the price or less. Most of the produce is of good quality, but nothing special. Strawberries and zucchini and basil were the standouts (although I still threw away most of the basil). Cherries were very disappointing. I don't want to sound too negative, I didn't have any problems with the service and it's kind of fun getting vegetables straight off a farm. There's an option to get a 4-delivery subscription, I think it's worth giving a try. Give it a go in the summer, when the more interesting fruits & vegetables will be available.

Yelp
I love their 8.5 oz. probiotc drinkwell softers that use whey from Saint Benoit yogurt (another great local company). They come in unique herbal flavors of lavender, geranium, rosemary, etc.. Another plus is the choice to provide them in great reusable or redeemable bottle. They give you $1 back for the bottle. They also produce wonderful seasoning salts that come in a reusable wire bail jar. Thank you for contributing to the Northern California food culture. You're onto something good. Keep it up.

Darren D.

Yelp
What a nice family owned organic farm. I recommend the 'Softers' organic probiotic sodas they make. Unique flavors that are very tasteful, my favorite being Rose Geranium.

Yelp
Stopped by their stand at the sf ferry building today... What lovely people! Can't wait to try the tomatoes and the dried lavender smells amazing! And the owner gave me a little extra gift because I am a teacher! Looking forward to buying from them again.

Yelp
I look forward to getting my Eatwell box every other week. Opening the box feels like your opening an unexpected gift box. (Even though online they tell you what you are getting for the week-I don't have to look.) Surprise! Yummy! Then I start imagining what I can cook from the FRESH vegees. It's like the show on TV - Iron Chef - the secret ingredients are in the box from Eatwell Farms. It's one of the things I do to keep my family inspired about eating FRESH QUALITY food. The BEST package I get with my box are the eggs. If you have never tasted a real quality egg from a pasture raised chicken, then you are in for a special treat. Even my two teenage boys immediately could tell the difference in flavor. Sign up and enjoy Eatwell Farms-that's what I say!

Yelp
Thank you so much to Eatwell Farm for the wonderful organic produce they provide. I've been dealing with cancer this year and a friend suggested I try a subscription. because it's so convenient and healthy. It's been wonderful! The boxes come every other week and provide not only healthy produce but something neat to look forward to. I never know what will come but it always brings a smile to my day. The eggs I get are delicious and have bright orange yolks from all the little bugs they eat! I'm sure they are very happy chickens. Eatwell Farm also provides a great newsletter with updates on the farm and wonderful recipes to try. They offer events at the farm like Tomato Sauce Day, which speaks for itself. I think this might be on the list of field trips to come with my grandson. They've even managed to introduced me to veggies I'd never bought before, never too late to try something new even at 62!

Yelp
I eventually had to stop using Eatwell Farms, and switched to It's Organic (in 2014). I do miss the eggs, but I don't miss the Eatwell Farms service. I got very irritated with the email quantity. I received so many email communications I used the unsubscribe feature, which never worked. They still kept multiplying and coming, like Mickey Mouse battling the brooms in Fantasia. I stopped the service all together when I found It's Organic (which delivers). The emails kept coming. I finally printed them all, as well as all of my unsubscribe requests, and MAILED them to the office. They kept coming, and not only that, I started to receive fundraising requests following the owner's illness. I was now being asked to contribute to his medical expenses?! Are you shitting me?! I wrote a formal complaint and did get a response finally -- from the very owner who needed my money to help with his medical expenses -- and he said he couldn't find me anywhere in the system so wasn't sure why I was receiving emails at all. Great. They did stop coming after that, though. Thankfully.

Yelp
When we joined Eatwell Farms some four years ago or so, we knew nothing about CSA farms and had just seen a flyer at the Berkeley Farmer's Market about it. From the first week, I was sold on the whole concept. It was like Christmas combined with Chopped every Thursday! What would be in our box? Sure, a lot of things I would regularly use at the peak of freshness but also mystery veggies I would never think of using that challenged my creativity and palate. The produce I don't use, I either trade or I bring to our church's weekly homeless suppers, so that they can use it to feed the poor on SF streets. The yearly strawberry day--pick your own super-ripe strawberries right from the field for a $1 a basket!--provides a great day close to the earth and yields a year's worth of AMAZING strawberry jam and pie filling. But in addition to great local, organic fresh, varied produce delivered weekly, there is the community aspect of being part of Nigel's farm. Sharing recipes on site, following the ups and downs of the farm and the people, and now, being the West Berkeley host site, all make the experience that much more fulfilling. To have such a close and ongoing relationship to the farm and to be connected to the rest of the membership has very much changed my way of thinking about food, food production and quality, and food distribution.

Sarah W.

Yelp
Eatwell Farm's CSA box has changed how we cook & eat. The veggies (from tomatoes and carrots to beets and baby onions) and fruit (strawberries and apples and oranges galore) are excellent. We also order farm fresh eggs, which are so tasty and great for breakfast, for baking, and well, for everything that uses eggs! We pick up our box every other week from another member's front porch. It's an easy sign up and pick up process. I highly recommend Eatwell for very fresh produce.

E B.

Yelp
Have been a part of this CSA for years now! Have canned heirloom tomatoes with them, picked oodles of scrumptious ripe strawberries directly at their farm plots, and of course I enjoy their recipes, updates, and food boxes. Whenever I travel I truly miss eating their scrumptious fruits and veggies. Highly highly recommend for a healthier lifestyle and planet.
