Eatwell African Restaurant & Lounge Brings Nigerian Cuisine to Old City | Eater Philly

"I spotted a new Nigerian restaurant shaking up Old City: Eatwell African Restaurant & Lounge is a spacious BYOB, 65-seat venue at 106 Chestnut Street run by cousins and owners chef Aisha Wahab and Stephen Oyelakin, who expanded their small Irvington, New Jersey takeout into a full-service dine-in spot to introduce longtime Northern Nigerian family recipes and broaden Philly’s culinary palate. The menu blends African soul food and inexpensive snacks ($4–$6) such as chicken pies, scotch egg, chin-chin, puff-puff and meat pie, with dinner entrees like asun (grilled goat meat), peppered snail, giz-dodo (seasoned gizzards with fried plantains), asaro (yam porridge), a variety of grilled and stewed fish dishes, and a "designer stew" (aka ayamase) served with white rice. Eatwell is open Mondays–Thursdays 12 p.m.–10 p.m. and Saturdays–Sundays 1 p.m.–11 p.m., offers a private 25-seat dining room for large groups, is accepting walk-ins and phone reservations at (215) 964-9213, and will release its website and social pages soon." - Ernest Owens

Everything felt incredibly authentic and well done! The waitress helped up go through the menu and choose things that interest us without ordering in excess. I personally like my fufu on the side and not under everything. Some of the meats just weren’t my cup of tea but i’m sure others will like it. We recommend the Suya

First time trying Nigerian food. I took Efo Elegusi meal and jollof rice, I loved it. Food was so good. Good service and nice atmosphere (good music, not too loud). The place is very neat, I highly recommand.

Google
Stopped into Eatwell for lunch and had a great experience! The food was fantastic, particularly the spicy suya, meat pies, and jollof rice. The menu was quite extensive, so there are plenty of options and we look forward to trying new things. It was our first time eating here, but the service was pleasant and helpful in explaining things on the menu. Overall, a great time!

I was walking when I spotted this place. I was excited to check it out as I am African and wanted to support an African restaurant. The Suya was a little dry to me, but I did still enjoy it. The puff puff was definitely worth it. The restaurant was clean and it wasn't too loud. I definitely recommend checking them out.

The lady who helped me(the owner i assume). Was very nice! Very patient & polite. Food took a while to come out(I ordered takeout). The food was good overall, very flavorful & spicy for those who can’t handle spice. Portion size is so good! I think I’ll have this food for just about a week & the price was well worth it.

Google
My Nigerian boyfriend takes me here for authentic foods, like asun, fluffy, warm pounded yam and egusi( my favorite), and peppered snail (a first for me). And I love it! Everything is beautifully prepared and presented. Spicy, fresh, delicious, good portions. The music is good and the service is friendly. Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The wait time was okay. I ordered snails as my appetizer, but the taste was really off. the snail was hard, earthy, and had a bitter aftertaste. That usually happens when snails aren’t properly prepped . I mentioned it politely to one of the cashiers. A few minutes later, another cashier came over clearly irritated, questioning why I didn’t like it and insisting nothing was wrong because another table didn’t complain. As Africans, we really need to do better with customer service toward each other. The way she spoke to me felt unnecessary and disrespectful, and I honestly don’t think she would’ve talked to non-African customers like that. My entrée was grilled fish. It was okay at first, but it still had a strong fishy aftertaste, and part of it tasted bitter. Which again means it was not prepped well. This place has potential, but the customer service and food quality missed the mark this time. I was respectful the whole time, but left feeling disrespected. Even though the experience wasn’t the best, we didn’t take it personally and still tipped! I hope the staff gets better training on how to handle customer feedback.

I was traveling to Delaware from Las Vegas through the Philadelphia international airport. I craved for authentic Nigerian meal. I googled and this restaurant popped up. From the door, to the table, the atmosphere felt like home away from home. I ordered goat meat pepper soup (100% tasty with organic spices). I ordered amala (60%) - the ewedu (jute leaves) was not green enough for me. I ordered the ayamase (peppered fried stew) to go. They all tasted delicious. I will be going back there. My server was polite, and professional. Their bathroom was clean, and well decorated. Overall, I was impressed.

Yelp
Went here with two girlfriends and had a good experience. I booked our reservation through google and we were seated right away. The service was good and we appreciated that they had a hand washing station available on the main floor for use. For our appetizers we ordered puff puff which was my personal favorite. It was warm and delicious. We also ordered a scot egg, meat pie and veggie spring rolls which were also good. For our entrees, I went with goat, jollof rice and plantains and both of my friends got fish. One got the red snapper and the other got a white fish which they enjoyed. As far a my meal it was decent but the goat and jollof were more tomato based than I expected. Good flavor but definitely not the best I've had. I also would've liked if the plantains were sweeter. The only issue was that the prices on the menu did not match the prices on our check. They were higher on our check, which can be frustrating if you're expecting to spend a certain amount.

Yelp
Friendly service, though slow because there was only one server for the entire dining area, and chef, who came out to the tables toward the end of our meal, but the protein left something to be desired. Unfortunately we had quite a lot of gristle in our goat, the snails were rubbery, and the Assorted Meat was tough. Our group generally enjoyed the Okra Soup (almost a puree), the Stewed Chicken Wings (hot was not too spicy), the Fried Snapper Fish, and the Sorrel Zobo drink. While the Efo Riro (spinach stew) had a nice flavor, it was overly salty, and our servings of Jollof Rice carried a burned aroma. The dining room had the feel of a casual cafe. We did enjoy that there was a handwashing station (sink, soap, etc.) available. Overall, the consensus was that for the quality and portion sizes, it was pricey.

Yelp
I gave three stars because the food was good but it took forever to receive the food. We waited over an hour to be served. Other patrons were upset that it was taking so long. One person left disgruntled without receiving his food because he too waited over an hour. I wanted chicken with my meal. I was informed after an 1/2 hour wait that there wAs no Chicken( only a few wings left). I ordered rice with beans and only the white rice came out and I had to wait 15 additional mins for the beans. This place has so much potential. I hope they get it together !

Yelp
Tasteless. Most horrible African food. I ordered take out paid $60 for nasty parboiled jollof rice, shrimp fried rice, 4 pieces of horrible BOILED chicken wing dings in tasteless tomato sauce, two little pieces of fish. I understood to be a little expensive considering the location but the food was terrible. No taste, no flavor, no spice. Never again.

Yelp
Ordered takeout they charged me 85 dollars for tiny bit of parboiled jollof rice and a pint of inedible meat. Ayamase was 30 dollars for a pint and more parboiled rice no eggs intensely hot ogbono tasted like soup. Ebu swallow had dirt in it. These people are ripoff artists. I almost came back to throw the food at their window I was so mad. Fuuuuck these ripoff artists

Yelp
This is our new go to spot. Absolutely delicious everything. Also brought my siblings and this is their first time having Nigerian food and they loved it! I've had macrel and stew, croaker stew, suya, pepper soup, Jollof, shrimp fried rice, egusi, meat pie and can't get enough. Very friendly and attentive waitress...LOVED meeting Ma the chef, owner is super cool, The Best!

Yelp
Incredibly kind staff, beautifully decorated interior. Food was a delicious, too spicy for me but I'm British so take it with a grain of salt. Big fans, will be back. Fun little BYOB for date night!

Yelp
Delicious! Modern interior. Our server gave us recommendations and the chef even came to say hi.

Yelp
Awesome Nigerian cuisine in the heart of Old City! Meat dishes are super fresh and well spiced, such a great addition to the neighborhood. We met the owners who were super sweet and helpful about navigating the menu filled with authentic African dishes. The venue is tastefully decorated and very clean. They have this really cool palm wine (just fermented, not alcoholic) from Nigeria that's super unique and delicious! Will be coming back soon! Also BYOB!

Yelp
The food and hospitality was wonderful. I felt very comfortable and appreciated. It's so nice being greeted by smiles and having servers that are knowledgeable about the food . I'm looking forward to going back.

Yelp
Made a reservation, got several confirmation texts. Drove there from Delaware and restaurant was closed. NOT a good way to do business.

Yelp
I have always wished that I could travel to places like Abuja, London, New York Houston Texas, or Atlanta Georgia to enjoy authentic Nigerian cuisine but my wish came through last night when I visited EATWELL RESTAURANT right here in Philly for only $29 all day parking across the street, I settled down to down loading Abula with ice cold Emu.DELICIOUS! Thank you to the owners and staff of EATWELL for actually bringing my wish to my door step. Will be right back for more. I think they also offer catering services, my Thanksgiving planning is complete Kayode EM Balogun
