The Best Ice Cream Shops in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Forget the mid-aughts froyo shop with artificial-tasting flavors and super-sweet candy toppings; Eb & Bean is closer to a high-end soft-serve, with just a touch more tang. The shop always serves froyo in vanilla bean and Valrhona chocolate, along with a handful of seasonal specials, including a couple nondairy options. The magic here is in the creative, artisanal toppings, like Tom Bumble Crumble, a flaky, caramelized peanut butter, and cold brew bourbon sauce. Eb & Bean locations offer plenty of seating with colorful cartoon murals that kids will love." - Michelle Lopez

Portland’s Top Spots for Dairy-Free Frozen Desserts | Eater Portland

"Adorned with colorful decor and friendly polar bear murals, Eb & Bean is a favorite among kids and adults thanks to its towering frozen yogurt swirls that come in creative seasonal flavors, like salty chocolate almond, passionfruit caramel, and orange creamsicle. This vegan-friendly shop’s three locations — Broadway, Division, and 21st — always offer several dairy-free flavors, made with organic almond, coconut, or oak milk, alongside a colorful toppings bar of coconut whipped cream, candied ginger, vegan marshmallows, and chocolate sprinkles." - Waz Wu

This was a lovely dessert place to finish off our vacation here in Portland! They have multiple yummy nondairy options, great toppings! I opted to get the staff recommended macadamia nut ice cream as a shake with cookie butter & waffle cone pieces. My man got the nondairy walnut brownie with cookie dough & cake pieces. Both were tasty & the staff member was sweet & quick though she was new. Would definitely come back!

First and Last Visit on Sep 23, 2024! It was unfriendly service for the coolest spot on this street at 8pm on a Monday's night, so disappointed for our first time! One of the two staff members was visually annoyed with the three of us wanted to sampled the 6/8 flavors they offered. I rather they have no sample policy vs give us attitude about it, especially for 6/8 flavors available tonight. There was one person behind us so it wasn't even a long line during peak hours. I asked the one staff who wasn't gave us attitude for sampling about non-added sugar options and there was none. Dog friendly spot on this section of the street with two benches outside and few round tables and high tools inside on both side against tall glass walls. Our total for three was $29 for: -One kids size with toppings. -One regular size with toppings. -One large size tart with 3 toppings. -One berry cheesecake. The cheese cake was very average. It's missing the cheese cake like creaminess and funk. The tart lack zesty taste and more one the sweeter side. It definitely was not worth the drive for us from SE Portland. Dog Friendly

Google
Ebb and Bean is seriously one of my favorite spots in Portland. Their dairy-free frozen yogurt is so good—it’s creamy, flavorful, and they have the best toppings around. But what really makes this place special is the staff. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming, and they capture that Portland vibe I love. I’ve always had such great experiences here, and I can already tell I’ll be coming back all the time.

Google
SO GOOD! So many topping options. Highly recommend valrhona chocolate.

Aria Brooks

Google
Tried their frozen yogurt for the first time today and was definitely impressed. I loved that they had more natural type toppings rather than just kid friendly gummy stuff like most places. Fair prices (in today's market😅) You can tell it's good quality and the staff was very polite and welcoming. Just a heads up though if you pay cash they can't give change. This wasn't an issue for me but wanted to include it in my review for future customers.

Google
Fantastic non dairy (coconut) frozen yogurt! Marionberry pancake flavor was refreshing and fantastic!

Sinify

Google
The customer service was nice but the yogurt tasted quite weird (almost too healthy) and it was $0.95 per topping which felt expensive. I’ve never been to a froyo place where you don’t get to serve yourself which I don’t understand. Macaroon tasted good but I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Simcha Einhorn

Google
I really wanted to like this place because its so close to me, the hours are great, and I love the texture of soft serve/fro yo. Alas i dont think its my kinda spot :( the vibes inside were chilly and also chaotic and I was kind of amazed that toppings are $0.95 each. Just a pretty bleh experience for something that should be so simple. If everything else was good, $0.95 per topping wouldn’t really matter, but it felt like the cherry on top (pun intended).

Yelp
Chocolate hazelnut was amazing. Froyo was very light but packed with flavor, especially for a vegan yogurt. It was also very creamy and staff were friendly. Location had plenty of seating.

Yelp
This is the NW location of Eb and Bean. The staff isn't necessarily always friendly here. It's hit or miss. But the soft serve is delicious. And I can tolerate mild rudeness in exchange for delicious soft serve. Plus they sell Bumble for less than the expensive local grocer. And the other varieties besides just Tom Bumble. Yum!! You can also buy your favorites in pints!!! Don't forget!!
google avatar

Daphne S.

Yelp
I definitely enjoyed my soft serve but I don't think it was my favorite or something I would repeatedly seek out. They have a lot of great flavors. I ended up choosing the valrhona chocolate. It was really dark and rich which I liked. I also tried the summer seasonals which are a coconut base. I do not like coconut but these were so good and didn't have coconut flavor. I almost got the rose lemonade. The inside was quiet and had plenty of seating. It was cool inside but almost a little too cool for my liking. Service was good, as expected but not exceptional by any means. We got to try the flavors we wanted to.
google avatar

Cici G.

Yelp
I make a stop here at least once a week on my walks, sometimes it's the only reason I go on a walk I'm pretty basic with my flavors so I usually get their vanilla bean or the cake batter (it rotates). I love that their flavors taste amazing with just the right amount of sweetness.

Yelp
For real fro-yo in PDX! Non dairy options are the best around. I was able to sample as much as I wanted without judgment (except from my companion). Our ice cream specialist was very nice and gave us some recommendations. The large hazelnut praline was awesome. I was surprised that the non-dairy option was better than the dairy ones. The waffle cone was light and flaky for an extra $1.50. Since we got the cone, we did not feel the need to get any toppings. I believe the were an extra $.75 or was it $.90 cents. There is plenty of seating. I personally sat near the window to people watch.
google avatar

Pin E.

Yelp
Eb & Bean has so many flavors and the staff there is very nice. Not a lot of seating in this location - it's more like a grab and go place! You can taste different flavors before you order. I went for a tart flavor - they are so good and delicious! I love how refreshing and light it is. I didn't think the toppings were worth it though - the nuts tasted a bit stale and the oat streusel was just ok!
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
Has been one of my favorite soft serve spots in town for years! I'm not vegan but the dairy free ones are honestly better than the normal in my opinion. Be sure to get the Tom bumble crumble topping

alexa t

Yelp
my favorite froyo place ever. this is the first place i take people when they're coming to visit from out of town. i love their special flavors and cool toppings! thoroughly addicted!
google avatar

Brittney L.

Yelp
i've been craving froyo for a while now, but not like the yogurtland type froyo. i really wanted the specialty froyos with unique flavors that tasted like soft serve, and eb & bean did not disappoint!! they also have non dairy flavors and you can't even tell they use alternative milk. we got the non dairy mocha macadamia and salty maple vanilla with toffee bits & chocolate chip cookies. it was truly the best froyo ive ever had, everything they make tastes so high quality and house made. i wish i lived in oregon so i could have it more often, its the froyo i dream about having again! will come back if im ever there again
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Good pistachio flavor in every bite, creamy texture almost like an egg custard but this is frozen yogurt. $1 a topping is a bit much and the pop soundtrack is obnoxious. Service was alright, a friendly lady helped us with our order.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
I visited Eb and Bean a few months ago. It's a fancy frozen yogurt shop. It's located on NW 21st so it's street parking nearby only. The inside is nice. The service was good during my visit. They have a rotating selection of flavors. I got horchata and vanilla with a few toppings in a cup. It was delicious but a little pricey. Overall, it's a great place for dessert.
google avatar

Sophia Z.

Yelp
Love that there are so many vegan flavors (with varying bases too- oat, almond, coconut)! Texture is really good for dairy-free froyo
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Came back to try some of the holiday flavors and they were insanely good!! I absolutely loved the peppermint cocoa and gingerbread caramel flavors. I believe they both were non dairy & they were absolutely delicious

Nora K.

Yelp
how are you going to have a x-skinny for your MILKSHAKE (this is skinnier than a regular straw)

Pq R.

Yelp
Delicious vegan flavors, disappointingly teensy portions. Open until 10, worth a visit.

Yelp
Our second trip here on our Portland visits. We were celebrating an incredible day by going to our favorite ice cream spot on a delightful summer eve. Once again we had no wait and the employees are super friendly and gave us a few taste tests before we settled on our choices. I had Horchata and their signature Madagascar vanilla with cold brew bourbon sauce and my daughter had chocolate with a peanut butter shell. The prices are so reasonable here for the quality that you get. I also got a Eb and Bean T-shirt for my son because he is a polar bear. We always enjoy our stroll from our condo down to get our favorite treat after dinner. What a fun evening and we had a nice walk back through the beautiful healing garden on the hospital grounds.

Yelp
Sweetest little froyo shop! Helpful staff and amazing flavors and toppings! Look no further!

Savanah J.

Yelp
The reviews are so good and yet I was so disappointed. I was okay with paying the higher prices since everything I had heard about the quality of the fro yo was great, but in my opinion the quality was worse than most fro yo shops I've been to. If not worse, then certainly not worth the crazy prices, which are also way higher than any other place I've visited. I genuinely don't understand why this place is rated so highly. We got the chocolate flavor, which tasted bland and chocolate-less, and was not creamy at all. Our toppings were also bad and flavorless. The couple in front of us got 2 of the regular sizes and the tiny dollops of product they received were appalling. I won't be coming back. If you're trying to figure out which ice cream/froyo place to visit, just got to one of the many other fantastic shops that Portland has. Bleh. Not worth the money! I repeat! Not worth the money!
google avatar

Jina M.

Yelp
Tried many of the flavors and got the hibiscus one ...which we were not fans of but felt like we had to buy something. All of the options are not creamy, icy, fake tasting, and way too sweet. Everything was sorbet like and the flavors were not good. We thought this place was good 2 years ago, but somehow, it's gone down hill..unfortunate.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I love this spot. So delicious every single time, and I LOVE all the super creamy dairy free flavors. Toppings are off the charts and the number of possible combos is incomprehensible. I heart this place with my whole self. Spots to sit inside or bench outside, friendly staff who let me try as many flavors as I'd like (usually a lot). Thanks a bunch I heart you guys
google avatar

Kate A.

Yelp
A "healthier" choice for ice cream. Also vegan friendly and you don't feel like ass after eating it.
google avatar

Megan Y.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times now and don't know why I don't come here more often. It feels like a healthier dessert option than a lot of other places in town, but the flavors are just as satisfying. Some flavors are obviously better than others, but I haven't tried anything yet that I haven't liked. I love that they have multiple dairy-free options and make it clear on their menu. The only downside to me is that you pay a set amount for EACH topping that you get, so adding multiple toppings can add up pretty quickly. For two people, I paid about $15. I can't imagine anyone not wanting any toppings at all so it would be nice if at least one topping was included in the base price.
google avatar

Lydia K.

Yelp
My friends and I flew into Portland pretty late at night so the only thing available in the neighborhood was Eb & Bean. It was the best way to start our trip honestly. The workers there were so nice and helpful. Some of us (there were 6 girls) got two flavors and worked well for our gluten free friend. There were so many flavors that we all were able to get different ones and share. Prices were reasonable and I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Gina F.

Yelp
Portland has some good ice cream. Love that there are vegan options as well.Got recommendations from some friendly locals. Be sure to ask those in line to help guide your decision.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream with the perfect assortment of toppings! The staff were wonderful and quick to offer samples which was helpful since we had never been before. The interior was cute and perfect for people watching while I enjoyed my ice cream! Went last weekend and looking forward to stopping by again this weekend before the Thorns match! Great find!
google avatar

Yelp
All I can say is WOW so good. This place does an excellent job at everything they do. Both the organic dairy and vegan options were delicious and the magic shell is a wonderful healthy version of the nostalgic treat from childhood. Best of all they are soy free for those with soy allergies. We went two days in a row after trying. Good vibes and customer service!
google avatar

Corinne R.

Yelp
Omg best dessert/ice cream in pdx. Don't waste your time at salt and straw. I guess this place is fro yo, but honestly couldn't tell. The best part was the local bakery brownies and hot fudge. 10/10!!!
google avatar

Nooshi B.

Yelp
Lots of yummy flavors and choice of toppings here! They let me sample as many flavors as I wanted which was awesome. Open concept space with high ceilings and lots of seating inside to enjoy your fro-yo. I went with the hazelnut praline and earl grey and added waffle cone, cocoa nibs and bumble crumble. Do yourself a flavor and get the bumble crumble topping!! It's like a powdery butterfinger that turned my fro-yo into magic! Love this little spot and can't wait to come back to try some new flavors. They change their menu seasonally.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm always looking for that healthier option and was really looking forward to trying this place, especially since they had flavors made with almond milk! Great for the ones who don't like or can't have dairy! So I knew after checking out their website and their menu, that I was gonna LIKE this place but after trying the frozen yogurt here, I have decided I LOVEEEE this place and it is my favorite place for soft serve treats!!!! And hey it's ok if you don't wanna go healthy, you can unhealthy it up with all the toppings they have!!! And they have a LOT! I chose the small size of the salty pistachio and strawberry hibiscus swirl in a waffle cone (because hello, I love waffles). AAAANNNNND, since it was in a waffle cone, I decided to add a topping for $0.85 because I knew it wasn't gonna fall all over the place like it would if it were just in the regular sugar cone. I was looking for Oreos, which is pretty much my go to topping for ice creams but the coconut pecan cookie caught my eye right away. These cookies were good but my yogurt was soooooo good that I probably could've just had that without any fancy additions. My hubby tried the honey chai in a cup and had salted caramel drizzled over and had some coconut whip cream added. That whip cream was yummmmyyyy. After eating my salted pistachio and strawberry hibiscus swirl, I was very tempted to get another one to go. Butttttt I held back. Mainly because there was a small line now. See, it's 50 something degrees but how can you not wanna eat soft serve frozen yogurt?!? Like I always say, it's never too cold for ice cream (or frozen yogurt!).
google avatar

Pauline T.

Yelp
Great place for group with lots of vegan options. We tried some of the fun unique flavors but ultimately, I'm a vanilla. The Madagascar vanilla particularly was delicious! I topped with sprinkles and white chocolate chips (which were mini, cute). The server was very nice, took his time and didn't rush us in trying the different yogurt flavors. And the place was decorated well with good photo opportunities. The people who serve you place the toppings so it is portioned appropriately if you tend to overindulge however, they are fairly generous. For pricing, I feel like I had a good value for what I ordered and I left feeling satisfied without craving more. Mine was a size small with the two toppings I listed.
google avatar

Ainsley E.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE. I had the salty pistachio and chocolate hazelnut pudding froyos with waffle cone, coconut, and cocoa nibs toppings. BF had black sesame froyo with coconut whipped cream, toasted coconut, candied ginger, and bumble crumble toppings. So so soooooooo good. Friendliest staff, cute shop. Lots of dairy-free options and vegan options as well. Skip Salt & Straw and come here!!!!
google avatar

Bijana K.

Yelp
I've been to the Broadway location a few times. It's just far enough from my house that it's a treat to go there. Now that there is one open on NW 21st, this might be a dangerous situation developing! The thing I love the most about Eb and Bean is their vegan options! They have better vegan options than other frozen dessert places around town and I was pleasantly surprised that they had even more vegan options than I expected this time! The menu on my visit was 1/2 vegan! And when I requested to taste the vegan selections, the person who helped me made sure my companion was aware he was ordering dairy and offered me vegan toppings! That level of service is so appreciated. I honestly didn't even think of waffle cones not being vegan (don't despair - they have both!). Every time I've been in either location, they have also been spotlessly clean and that can be hard during the hot days of summer when your slinging froyo! Check them out - you won't be disappointed! See you there!
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
The staff was so friendly! I told them it was my first time being there and that I've wanted to visit for a while. They welcomed me with smiles and answered and questions I had. They also didn't get upset when I asked for some samples (sometimes when I go to other places and ask for some, I can tell the employees can get bothered by it). I tried the salted butter caramel which was delicious. A prefect blend of salty and sweet. Neither flavor overpowered the other. As a topping I added the honey whipped cream which was also delectable. Very light and fluffy with just a hint of the honey taste. The second topping I got was the toasted coconut. It was the perfect textural difference that was needed.
google avatar

Becky Y.

Yelp
I debated giving this place a 4 star or a 5 star, but decided on the 5. Overall, I thought it was okay. I got a vanilla bean with an almond toffee crumble. I have no complaints about it. They didn't skimp on the amount they give for the soft serve, or the toppings which in itself can be enough for a 5 star review. I think I could have gone for a more interesting flavor, but the ones that were available that week didn't really appeal to me which was why I got vanilla. I wouldn't mind going back to try something different though. I will say though, the person taking out order was super nice and patient. We had 3 very young children with us, and she was very accommodating to them.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
I got this place confused with the other place that does chickpea ice cream - so I was a little disappointed that it wasn't as weird as I thought it would be! BUT they do have some interesting flavors, wide range of toppings, and both dairy and non dairy (like almond milk based) options. I got the pistachio dairy flavor and tasted some of the vanilla with a berry shell. The shell was a little weird, but the soft serves were good. It didn't feel all that special to me though so I'd probably opt for ice cream elsewhere, but if you're craving froyo in the NW 21st area this will hit the spot.

Katie B.

Yelp
They had great customer service and they had gluten dairy free options I would 100% recommend this place.
google avatar

Vicky C.

Yelp
Love this place and it's always worth the drive. I tried the vanilla chocolate swirl because I couldn't decide on a flavor bur will probably just go for vanilla next time. Toppings I got were waffle cone pieces, brownie chunks and chocolate chip cookie pieces. Partner had vanilla with hot fudge, cookie dough pieces and peanut butter sauce. So good!!

Carole F.

Yelp
Absolutely yummy frozen yogurt with unusual toppings available. The Valrhona chocolate yogurt was a chocolate lover's dream. We'll worth seeking out!
google avatar

Raj S.

Yelp
Sooooo good! No clue how they create the raspberry shell that is thin but crisp... and doesn't melt the froyo. Amazing! Almond toffee topping was delicious. As was raspberry compote on vanilla froyo. Unique toppings! Definitely add to visit list when in Portland

Suzan D.

Yelp
Best non-dairy treat!!! Loved the Golden Milk flavor. The Strawberry/elderberry was pretty great too. But golden milk was wonderful. Great staff. Clean. We will be back!
google avatar

Jina H.

Yelp
Not your average froyo! Eb and Bean has something for everyone, with classic flavors of vanilla and chocolate plus plenty of non-dairy seasonal flavors. Plenty of toppings, literally over 25 and 10 plus sauces, starting at 85 cents. The fact that you can get individual flavors, swirl, or side by side flavors makes the experience very personal and so many combinations. I also like how the flavors are listed in pairs so that is the swirl mix you would get, which makes the organization great. Quantity and quality is top notch- the yogurt thick and not watery. Portions are perfect! The employees are very patient and friendly, giving great recommendations and help in choosing your flavor/toppings. I definitely wish for an Eb & Bean closer to where I frequent! P.S. The use of space for the interior is not wasted, even using the pole to add seating around it and various artwork on walls for pictures!
google avatar

Sharlene H.

Yelp
AMAZING and DELICIOUS. I came in here having the expectation that this was like any old frozen yogurt place. We have several froyo spots in Sacramento and I thought this would just be comparable and it was just a hype but was I wrong... The staff is very friendly and approachable. They are very knowledgeable about their froyo and gave great suggestions on what to choose. They even have a board of staff picks. They offered us free samples of every flavor (8 total) and WOW... was I amazed, that even the customer in front of me heard. She turned to me and said, "This is my favorite spot!" The flavors does not taste artificial. I was excited to try the earl gray that I saw on yelp but it looks like they change their flavors often. I ordered a small which is $4.05. Each topping is $0.85 each. They have 36 toppings to choose from. You have the choice of choosing one flavor, two flavors that are side by side, or a swirl of two flavors. I chose to have mine with two flavors of the chocolate pistachio and macadamia side by side topped with raspberry sauce and roasted almonds. My sister ordered a small of the vanilla latte and garden mint topped with almond toffee crumbles and oats. There are two other locations: 3040 SE Division St Portland, OR 97202 and 1425 NE Broadway Portland, OR 97232. The place is very clean. They have a very cute dining area with a kids table. Their handmade flavors are organic with dairy-free and vegan options which are made with almond milk instead. What a plus! Everything in here won me over and so did to many customers. We came in as the only customers there and we went out with a long line out the door. This is a must try when coming to Portland! Summer Hours: Monday-Thursday 12 PM-10 PM Friday-Sunday 12 PM-11 PM

Yelp
This location is pretty busy but everything in NW is pretty busy. I love the hours for Eb & Bean - open nice and late. I wanted to try two of their flavors which looked interesting and both flavors were their non dairy. The first was Macadamia vanilla and the other was salted chocolate pistachio. Both were incredible and I was so happy when she said, "You can swirl the two!" when I expressed that I did not know how to pick one over the other! I had it topped with their honey whipped cream (which was not impressive and they offer a non dairy version I wish I had tried instead!) and their toffee bits. Needless to say my creation was delicious!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I've always really liked Eb & Bean and looked forward to trying their new location. I got the dairy-free roasted macadamia twisted with the salted chocolate pistachio. This was also the first time I got toppings and went with peanut butter magic shell and sea salt cocoa nibs. The ice creams were super creamy and had great flavor. The combo with the toppings was a delightful, rich combo of salty and sweet. I'll have to come back again before these flavors go away!
google avatar

Iris A.

Yelp
This froyo is aaaaaamazballs. I was so excited to try, being organic and all, and it did not disappoint. We got a small razberry creme fraiche with marionberry compote and coconut Pecan cookie pieces AND a small vanilla toasted macadamia nut base with almond toffee crumbles and hot fudge! Two thumbs for both. Completely different combos, but my husband and I kept swapping and mmmmmmmmm-ing over the powerful and all natural REAL flavors! ($11.50 all together or $5.75 for 1) We will definitely come back!
google avatar

Luc M.

Yelp
Wow this place is good! Went on a warm Sunday evening and it did not disappoint. I got two to go and they were delicious! The staff is super friendly and extremely knowledgeable about their product. They make sure you know what you're getting and will help you build the best bowl possible. Definitely coming back here soon!

Yelp
The female worker with black hair and hot pink highlights was very rude, She had a nasty attitude and cussed at us when my friend put her mask down to unlock her phone for a second, she started to rant and tell us to " get the f out of her store" my friend tried explaining that she was just unlocking her phone, when she said " I don't fu**** care put your damn mask on the whole time" as I was walking out she rushed towards us trying to assault my friend when we were already leaving. They have a sign outside there store that says it's a safe place for ALL. What a lie, we were threatened, cussed at, and the employee almost assaulted the both of us. Nothing SAFE about that environment at all.
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
Very delicious! I sampled several flavors and was surprised I liked the non-dairy ones better than the dairy. So far, I like the vanilla latte and chocolate pistachio. They have a ridiculous amount of toppings, which is amazing. The cookie dough is a little salty though. The hot fudge was thicker than normal, but still good. I appreciate that they use compostable bowls and spoons. The shop is clean and spacious. Service is great. I like that you can buy pints to go and they sell a large variety of gourmet chocolate bars.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
Came in after eating at Bhuna to cool off our pallettes. This place has premium top notch frozen yogurt with hand crafted toppings.

Rebecca K.

Yelp
Tried Eb & Bean for the first time today and I will definitely be back! My husband is lactose intolerant so he was especially excited at the number of dairy-free options. All of them were delicious. Didn't feel like it was lacking anything. Jessie was the server on duty and handled being by himself like a champ! He didn't rush anyone through their order. He was patient and informative. They have a huge selection of toppings. Some of them are natural versions of the toppings we're accustomed to, but some are unique to Eb & Bean, and I have to say that they're super tasty! The portions are not huge, but they're enough to feel like you've had a nice treat. The benefit of higher quality food: you don't need as much of it to feel satisfied! There is another location on NE Broadway near my work, and I think I'll have to make that a regular stop.
