Where to Eat Around USC and the LA Coliseum | Eater LA

"Ebaes is a hip spot a few blocks away from campus that serves an array of inventive Japanese-inspired dishes, including small plates, ramen bowls, and sushi rolls. The signature Thai-style ramen is made with coconut milk, which results in an ultra-creamy broth. Past the heavy wooden door is a dimly lit interior that feels more like a local pub, complete with bold decor and eclectic, colorful artwork. Definitely take advantage of daily happy hour deals between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and visit on the first of the month for $7 ramen." - Cathy Park

I felt let down the moment I opened my delivery. The Philadelphia roll looked like it needed a pep talk just to stay together. The salmon seared roll was decent, but for nearly $20, I expected more than a microscopic layer of fish. The California roll tried to dazzle with extra flakes and sauce, yet somehow managed to lack real flavor. I spent almost $50, even after a small discount, and waited longer than I’d like for something this underwhelming. On my personal rating scale, I’d give the food a 4, the price a 3, and the overall spark—charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent—a 3. I wouldn’t order again, even if they promised a front-row seat to watch them roll the sushi.

The atmosphere here is fantastic — it's a small, cozy spot with dim house lights and a warm glow from accent lighting. Very inviting and comfortable inside. The food was absolutely phenomenal. Honestly, some of the best ramen l've ever had. The Diablo Ramen is actually spicy, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, I'm giving 2 stars because of the service and how the restaurant operates. We arrived at 8:30 PM and weren’t able to place our order until about 8:50 PM. Not long after, our server informed us they were doing a "last call for food" because it was slow. What made it even more uncomfortable was that after we received our food, several staff members sat at a table by the kitchen, clearly waiting for us to finish eating so they could close and leave. It made us feel rushed and awkward, which completely ruined the experience - especially since we were meeting up with a friend we hadn't seen in years and were hoping to spend a relaxed evening catching up. By cutting the kitchen early and making guests feel like they're inconveniencing the staff, it not only takes away from the customer experience, but also costs the restaurant potential sales and a higher tip for the server. It came off as poor management and left a very disappointing impression, particularly for a first-time visit I was really excited about.

Love the food. One of the hole in the wall kinda place from outside given its non descriptive entrance. But once you enter, it has a lovely quirky ambience, esp the Hello Kitty themed restroom. Food is good and has vegan options. Service is good but slow. You will build an appetite waiting for the food.

Food and vibes were awesome! It’s the perfect hang out if you’re a student with some friends, it’s just a tight spot so it’s difficult sitting ! the $10 ramen at the beginning of the month is also such a steal it’s soooo good

The sushi is kind of mediocre for its price, but the bowls are more worth it.

I dined at Ebaes in Los Angeles and had an exceptional experience! From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a modern and chic decor that set the perfect tone for the evening. The menu offered a fantastic variety of Asian fusion dishes, and everything I tried was absolutely delicious. The sushi rolls were fresh and beautifully presented, and the ramen was rich and flavorful. I highly recommend trying their signature Ebaes Roll – it was a delightful mix of flavors and textures. The service was top-notch, with attentive and friendly staff who made sure our dining experience was perfect from start to finish. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered great recommendations. Overall, Ebaes is a must-visit spot in Los Angeles for anyone who loves Asian cuisine. I can't wait to go back and try more of their amazing dishes!

Haven’t been here since my college years and man I missed it. The ramen was still good and the spicy wasn’t as spicy so maybe I should have got the Diablo one haha The wings and 🥟 were super good though can’t complain.

Google
It's the greatest hole in the wall you will walk into. Small space but the food is definitely worth it. By far one of the best ramen places. Everything complements each other: the noodles, the broth the shachu. I enjoy the regular tonkatsu but my husband loves the spicy tonkatsu because it's not overwhelming., even thought it's spicy is still enjoyable.

The food alone would absolutely bring me back - but only if the restaurant handles slow nights differently in the future.

Yelp
We parked a few blocks away and walked over. The place was small and packed! The inside was fun with all its art on the wall. The girls restroom was funny with its Zac Efron and Channing Tatum wall. I got the Original Ebaes ramen with chicken. I wouldn't say it was anything impressive. The chicken was pretty dry which brought the dish down.

Yelp
Been here a few times, and the first time I came here I loved their sushi rolls and takoyaki! I came again recently and thought it felt short based on their Chicken Bowl and Karaage. They were a bit bland and tasted cheap. I feel like these items aren't for me personally. I had their Rainbow roll and their rice and the rice was a bit hard. The fish quality was decent but just didn't hit. I don't think I would die to come back here again. Although im not a huge fan, the vibes are good for dates or catching up with friends. They also have a variety of flavored soju and beer.

Yelp
Ebaes is an awesome low key ramen spot next USC. There is not tons of seating but it's aesthetically pleasing and has great service. The specials are good she they offer discounts to first responders. The Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen was delicious. A good amount of spice and the noodles were delicious and decent chunk of the. I would recommend it. The Spicy California Rolls were also delicious the spicy sauce on top was great. Highly recommend this place 4/5

Yelp
Tasty food. We got ramen and a rice bowl. The service was just OK, it wasn't full. Our server was nice. But maybe could have been more attentive. The main problem was parking in back is limited. The ambience is good.

Yelp
Had to put the effort into putting a review to warn others. Wait time was quite long which would be manageable but communication became painstakingly rare while waiting for the entrance. Had to ask every thirty minutes until finding out they stopped calling people on the outside and called the wrong number listed four times, which would've been understandable if they didn't forget to call the outside like they promised when the next seat was available. Wait ended up being about 2 hours before inevitably leaving with an empty stomach. I imagine the food might've been good but I couldn't find out for myself due to poor communication.

Yelp
Service could be better but a young lady did check in on me before I placed my order through my phone. My gripe with these smartphone orders is that I am asked to tip before any of my food comes or any customer service takes place. I just find it backwards but okay. The food was good. I requested spicy and the pad see ew was perfectly so. The meat quality could have been better for the price of the dish. Everything did taste okay and a parking on a weekday was easy to find on the street. The restaurant itself is nice and could be a chill place to hang but the service and food could improve.

Yelp
On the first of every month, they offer $7 ramen (cash only). I recommend going during lunch time. It's a really small restaurant, so we had to wait over 2 hrs to get seated for dinner time. Don't really expect great service here; once we get our food we aren't really checked on. Portions are generous. For $7, I can't complain too much. Cold Bae Ramen: The shrimp tempura was so fresh and crunchy. Because it was a cold ramen, they didn't totally lose their crunch as I was eating. It was a unique meal, but I don't think I would get it again. The cold broth was a bit salty and made finishing the meal a bit difficult. Spicy Tonkotsu: The spice was manageable. Rich broth with bouncy noodles. Chashu was okay, and broth was a little too salty. I prefer the Original Ebaes Ramen more, but this is a close second! Thai Ice Tea: such good thai tea. A bit on the creamier side, but that's what I prefer!

Yelp
First time visitor to this restaurant. Very positive and relaxed vibe, great meal choices, affordable prices and the sushi is very fresh and tasty Service here is first class with very friendly and welcoming employees Music playing over the sound system is very enjoyable, energetic and fun. Definitely a place to try if you are craving sushi, happen to be in the DTLA/USC area

Yelp
Cute little spot on the outskirts of USC campus. Sushi was delicious! The Trojan Roll was massive and tasty. Our waiter was super cool, he brought us sample of all the soup broths. Very helpful. If you're looking for a quality bite that won't break the bank definitely check this out.
google avatar

Ani H.

Yelp
Food was decent however I would not return. They add a 20% gratuity to your tab if you arrive with kids. Tip is based on service generally 15-20%.

Yelp
Amazing Ramen! If you're a student at USC, this place is definitely a step up from Ramen Kenjo! I tried the Spicy Tonkatsu and I lovedd the broth. There was a nice spicy kick to it with a ton of flavor. The meat was also really juicy, but I wasn't a huge fan of the noodles. I am definitely coming back so I would give this place a try!
google avatar

Yelp
A USC classic! This place is less than a mile of campus, so it's packed with USC students. Usually, sushi restaurants are hard for vegetarians to find items, but this place has really good vegan California rolls and the iconic crunchy tofu roll. The salmon bowl, spicy tuna bowl, and traditional sushi rolls are really good if you are less adventurous, but I recommend that you try some of their unique items. It's also not too hard to get a table.

Yelp
Our USC son turned us on to Ebaes while attending school. LUCKY US! Every opportunity we were in LA we had lunch at Ebaes. Now that he has graduated and moved back to the Bay Area we still continue to eat at our favorite ramen place whenever in LA. The only downside to Ebaes is they are not in the Bay Area. We can't eat ramen at home because all we want is Ebaes original ramen. Damn you Ebaes! My plea to you is PLEASE OPEN AN EBAES UP NORTH. Any where in Silicon Valley....Palo Alto, Mountain View, Campbell, Los Gatos, San Jose. Shoot I'd drive to SF to have ramen. I guarantee you will kill it. Do I really need to say how great the food is? Well I only get the original chicken ramen. Sorry I'm boring. Remember I can't just pop in on a whim so I have to get it while I can. Husband gets the poke bowl with only ahi. He loves the ramen too. The ramen is so amazing. The broth is what dreams are made of. No where have I found one like it. It's creamy with a coconut milk broth. Service is always great. Everyone is so friendly. Cute, intimate space. I always bug the waiter you need one up in the SF Bay Area. PLEASE consider opening up here. I can finally get my fill of your delicious ramen. I'm begging you!

Yelp
The food is great here and so is the service! Expect a wait if you come on weekends, and especially on the first of the month for $7 ramen!

Yelp
Fun sushi spot near USC! I went here for sushi for a team lunch and it was a lot of fun and the food was great. We got the USC Trojan roll, the Idaho roll, the Spicy Salmon roll, and the spicy garlic edamame. Everything was delicious and the rolls were very unique! To drink, I got a Thai iced tea and it was amazing. On another note, I had forgotten my phone at the restaurant and had someone from my group call them to ask if it was still there. The staff had found it and kept it safe until I could return, about 30 minutes later. Thank you to the staff!

Yelp
Food is good. Suchi rolls are good but the Ramen is my favorite. Service is decent. Some of the servers are nice while others just seem to be there for the check. Ambience is chill. Price is also decent.
google avatar

Yelp
Ebaes is a really good sushi spot in Pico-Union. They have a nice ambiance and a good mix of dishes so you can please your friends who want sushi or ramen or rice dishes. It's pretty affordable for what it is. We got drinks, an appetizer and two sushi plates for just $25 per person.
google avatar

Charlie R.

Yelp
I came here with my friends and we got a plethora of sushi. The spicy California roll was a hit, just perfect rice and crab combination. The spicy tube crispy rice you may not think is enough because it's 3 pieces, but has so much tuna. The rice being crispy just adds so much texture as well. The tonkotsu ramen is absolutely stellar, the broth really brings the flavors together and the chasu pork is divine. The atmosphere is great as well. It feels like a hole in the wall sort of place, and really feels that much more intimate. The service is quick and efficient. There aren't a lot of stuff but they give great food recommendations and organize everything perfectly. Everything about this place is awesom

Yelp
Great little Japanese place. Parking can be a pain but the interior is great! I wish then men's bathroom was decorated like the womens, if you go you'll see why! Friendly service and very fast. One of our meals came out much later than the others but the server took it upon herself to apply a small discount for it which wasn't needed but very appreciated! Spicy tuna rice bowl- looks small but the portion is great! Rice Cooked perfectly, fresh avocado and the spicy tuna was better than most places. Spicy tuna tends to be "cheap" and usually just ok but this was very good. It is spicier than most so be aware! Salmon nigiri- fell a little flat for me. Maybe I'm spoiled by my local spot but this just wasn't as good. Good ratio of rice to salmon but the quality wasn't fully there. Much better than other places but it wasn't melt in your mouth quality and just kind of fine. Overall we would definitely come back! It was quick, good food and service and pricing is spot on!
google avatar

Jasmine A.

Yelp
I like Ebaes the ramen is good. I am a fan of spicy food so I always get it Diablo. The sushi is pricey for the quality in my opinion. Also, if you ever order food for pick up on the weekend, wait about 10 extra minutes after they say your order is ready
google avatar

Jacqueline G.

Yelp
Very busy with very few servers. It is super busy but well worth it. The ambiance inside is beautiful and hip. Perfect for a date or going out with the girls. The food is really good I am a sushi connoisseur so I was impressed with the plating and sushi offered on their menu:) However they did forget to seat us at first lol
google avatar

Yelp
The food was amazing. Service was good! We had the Sapporo roll & seared salmon roll. Bomb.com

Yelp
I miss going to $5 ramen bowls the first of every month. The food also does not to taste the same. The female staff, especially the supervisor was very rude. I will never go back again.
google avatar

Capri D.

Yelp
I absolutely love The Original Ebaes with shrimp!!! It's creamy with a hint of sweetness that you would normally find in a Panang curry. The shrimp is always cooked to perfection and the noodles are firm and chewy. Yums for my tums. Love you Ebaes!
google avatar

Yery J.

Yelp
a solid hidden gem near usc - i honestly love ebaes as a fellow trojan myself. this spot is, at first, hard to find because it's a small restaurant but once you go in, the restaurant is pretty spacious and aethetic. it's a popular spot so it is busy. i usually get their spicy tonkotsu ramen or their spicy tuna rice bowl. both are so yummy :') never failed me. their thai tea is also really popular so i'd recommend that as well.
google avatar

Sam M.

Yelp
Good happy hour! But bad idea to come on a weekend, this place is filled with USC kids and the service is not the best. However I do like their signature ramen and the hand rolls.
google avatar

Valerie F.

Yelp
Food was pretty good i like the options they have for bowls and the interior had a cute and interesting aesthetic ! I think it would be cute for a first date bc it's interesting inside and there's a lot to talk about.

Maxine C.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Did not wait too long and it was reasonably priced for Great sushj. We got miso soup, crispy salmon rice, spicy tuna roll and garden roll it was all delicious
google avatar

JD B.

Yelp
Went out with my gf to this place for Date night and the food is spectacular! We came for the ramen but the wings stole the show for the night, everything came out really quick, and really fresh along with great service. The place is pretty intimate, but there was no wait time for us on a Sunday night, and their happy hour menu looks unmatched. Gotta go back for happy hour and try some of their drinks next time. Full dinner for 2 under $50. Not too many places can deliver that low of a price with that high of a quality.
google avatar

Gilbert S.

Yelp
One of my favorite spot near USC! My best pick is original Ebae ramen, its taste is not like regular ramen, it's way much better. I tried cold Ebae ramen in yesterday for hot weather. It's like Japanese cold soba but it comes with ramen-based noodle, flavorful iced cold soy broth, fried shrimps and veggie toppings. It's perfect for my taste and highly recommended
google avatar

Maybelline M.

Yelp
We love this place. By far the best ramen in the area. Can't go wrong with the spicy Tonkatsu with pork belly. The deep fried dumplings and sushi options are pretty good too. Parking is a pain but worth it.
google avatar

Luna L.

Yelp
cute interior decor and the huge wall mirror caught me off guard at first but i liked it. the ramen was so mid though. the main flavor was salt cause it was way too salty. the servers also just do their job and we had to go up to them to get the check which is fine and i didn't take any stars off for that. i think it would probably be ok to come back for their happy hour or monthly deals
google avatar

Brianna R.

Yelp
Asian fusion eatery, with lots of sushi and ramen options. Definitely a popular spot among students, and looking at the happy hour deals, I get why! Food-- Everything was good. We got... Karaage: Japanese style fried chicken, with a lighter batter than I'm used to. Juicy and well seasoned. Egg rolls: tasted like a classic egg roll you get with Chinese takeout Hawaiian fried rice: with Korean BBQ beef, cashews, pineapples, and lots of green onion - this was my favorite! California roll: not as basic as I expected, topped with spicy mayo and bonito flakes Parking-- is tough around here, but not impossible. Inside-- The space is smaller and brighter than I expected. Service-- It was so so. We came on a Monday so they weren't super busy when we got there (7pm), but things picked up once the late night happy hour started (8pm). Price-- Dinner for 3 was about $70. Will definitely come back to check out happy hour.

Aliga R.

Yelp
I was a guest who would visit at least three times a month. I invited friends because I raved about the broth of the ramen and was excited for the two of them to join. My guest report. Hair. In. The. Soup! months later: I was in a party of two. I noticed a hair at first but removed it and drank. My guest (after two bites)

Yelp
Oh my God, how come I couldn't find this place sooner I was in downtown LA for Work and I yelp Ramen and sushi and this place came up. It's a small hole in the wall with bomb Ramen on the first of the month They always have Ramen for seven dollars. It was delicious. Remember this place is cash only. Service was amazing and this restaurant are USC fans. I definitely will come back.
google avatar

Wendolyn M.

Yelp
This is getting worst each time!!! They were so good....now they don't even check that all item are on in the bag for the order! Like you take my money and you don't even have the consideration to make sure all items you charge for are in the bag! Just stop and look in the bag before you staple it! Picked up my order, I am trusting that you put all items that I already paid for are in there.. you give me my bag and don't say anything... No thank you! Just so I can leave as it's a big bother to get there and ask for my order. You guys need better customer service and someone to double check the bags!!!! Now I need to drive back to you as you can't even answer your phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never again.....
google avatar

Erica B.

Yelp
The original ramen is my favorite! Super cute place, love the ambiance and the Hello Kitty bathroom ha! Definitely a must try!
google avatar

Rochelle C.

Yelp
I took my eldest son on a lunch date, he picked this place and it happened to be the first of the month, and the restaurant was having their monthly special of $7 ramen bowls. I ordered the spicy ramen and my son has the tonkatsu ramen, and some rolls. They were all satisfying. The service is good, the staff were nice and polite. The only thing was it's cash only for those monthly special and you have to be there early. The place is tiny and it gets packed.
google avatar

Carolyn H.

Yelp
Came here to have a late lunch with my boys and celebrate a birthday. The front of the restaurant is rather unassuming. Once you enter, it takes you to a Japanese bar. We were seated quickly and ordered off the digital menu. We ordered spicy tonkotsu ramen, tonkotsu ramen, seared salmon roll, and the poke bowl, all very delicious.

Cole D.

Yelp
Service was bad. We waited 20 minutes to be seated at a table that had been clear since we got there. We waited 30 minutes for our food to come out. With all that waiting, I drank my water quickly and never got it refilled. Did the job tho. Food was okay but nothing remarkable. Room was cozy and fun/young.
google avatar

Mia S.

Yelp
The food at Ebaes is pretty good; I had sushi and some of appetizers (and yes, it's full of USC students as some of the other reviews noted). What is NOT good is the service. My guest and I had to wait quite a while for our food, and a party who was seated after us got their food before we did. The servers were not attentive at all and just brushed off our comments when we asked if our dishes were almost ready. When the food came, it was nearly thrown it down in front of us and the attitude was off the charts. I would've been understanding (of course) if they apologized or said anything about the wait. I understand being busy but I would have appreciated courtesy as we tried to be courteous of them. Won't be returning.
google avatar

Fatema L.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience trying out EBaes! I was really taken back by their signature ramen dish! It had a unique flavor that reminded me of a Thai curry and the chicken in there was so well cooked. They even have these really cool sushi boats that are great for sharing. I thought the sushi was ok, I enjoyed the sashimi and ramen most! I also loved their Thai tea here, would definitely get that again. The service was great and the ambiance was cute inside! We found street parking outside for free which was great!
google avatar

Vivian Z.

Yelp
Was a lovely experience! Server was soo sweet and considerate. The sushi was really fresh and yummy for an excellent price point. We also got the Thai tea and it was definitely very sweet but hit the spot. Interior is creative and cozy. Will be back for a casual meal with friends!

Yelp
Amazing ramen, gyoza, rolls. Everything was delicious and the restaurant was very quaint and comfortable. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I came for their special ramen day every 1st of the month for $7 any ramen! I got there around 7:30 and there was a huge wait. Highly recommend making a yelp reservation or joining the waitlist prior. I joined the waitlist but I talked to staff and got seated in 5min because I went alone. My Yelp waitlist estimate was 30-40min but it actually took 1hr 15min to get the text for an open table. Parking might be a bit tough. Interior decor is really nice, limited seating inside so that's why there's a wait, super loud ambiance, and limited staff. My order was taken in 5min and food came out in 10-15min. 7/10 Diablo Tonkatsu Ramen ($15.75 typically) - Comes with 2 small slices (medium thickness) of pork belly, corn, red ginger, and bean sprouts. Noodles were made just right. Broth was averaged creamy tonkatsu broth. Pork belly was super tender! Initially spice level was 3/10 and after adding both the house spicy sauce and chili oil it became 8/10 (perfect level)! Highly recommend doing this if you like spice! Ramen overall was definitely great for its price hence the 5 stars.

Yelp
Great little spot if ur dow, at or near USC. Quick in & out and pretty good food. No complaints at all. Checking via & get a free drink. Fight on !!! ...right near the old 'LaBarca'.
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
Wow! Karina and her folk really turn out some fun stuff. I'm way sold on the Philadelphia roll. It's yummy. I also had the deep fried tofu. I'm not a fan of deep fried food, but this didn't taste fried. Try it. The ramen was really great, the noodles perfect. All this and they still have a local vibe. Back to that deep fried tofu... It was crisp, not hard. And it was not soggy. Yay! It was yummy, owed to the sauce that was drizzled lightly on my bits. The California roll was ok, not my favorite and I'd pass next time. No trouble, because the rest was over the top yummy. I can't get that fried tofu out of my mind. So. I'd have to say this is a win. Happy hour during the week is 8 to 10! That's awesome. Ok. The hard part.... Parking can be rough. Don't stress, it's worth the effort.
google avatar

Keesha F.

Yelp
I probably don't have a very dependable palate when it comes to ramen because I've truthfully always disliked it lol!! It's always been either too salty or too thick tasting but Ebaes does it for me!! Ebaes Tonkatsu has the perfect balance of salt & pork flavor and the Original is almost like a creamy Tom Yum similar to Tom Kha Gai (just a bit sweeter) which I love so.. I'd say try them out!
