Shake Shack’s to Open New Wine Country Restaurant in Santa Rosa - Eater SF

"Echigo Home Cook just opened in the former Borderlands Cafe space on Valencia Street, one of the Mission’s busiest economic corridors. Serving bento boxes, pork katsu sandos, and sushi rolls, Mission Local reports the prime location — next to Beehive and across the street from Gola — quietly opened in mid-February." - Paolo Bicchieri

This place doesn't catch the eye on the outside but inside they decorated quite cute. But it was so quiet when we went on a Sunday maybe it was odd time. Food: the sashimi and salad was pretty fresh but the rolls were so small, overpriced for the portion. Everything in the menu looked pretty overpriced for what the portion comes out on. Service was attentive, quick and good. The good thing about them is they do t charge all those ridiculous sf what what fees and pretty clean bill. So we tipped them real good. Overall would come back cause the vibes were cool but for the portion sizes it was pretty disappointing. Basically you won't be full on $65 per person.

Had this place saved for a while and finally tried it for lunch on a Sunday. The service was very slow, and the food was worse unfortunately. We ordered a pork katsu curry and a roll. The curry came out after 5 minutes, and then the roll took 30 minutes after to come out. The curry was watery and tasted only like star anise/clove, the pork was cold and all very dry - to the point that a few pieces were inedible. The price of the curry was 30$ which felt too high for the quality of what you get. Go over a few blocks to stone hill matcha for a 20$ katsu curry that’s fast and delicious. Perhaps Echigo was home sick today.

Have been wanting to try this place for a while after walking past it on Valencia. We went on a rainy sunday night craving Japanese curry & Echigo did not disappoint!! While the nigiri sushi was super fresh & delicious, curry dishes were the best we’ve had in the city since returning from our trip to Japan!! The meat was cooked perfectly— crispy yet juicy. The portions were very generous & the curry truly felt like someone’s home cooked family recipe. We finally found our curry spot!! 🙌🏽🍛

This is, by far, the best meal I have had in a very long time. The pork curry was balanced, spicy…sushi, unbelievable, top to bottom…service…absolutely unbelievable experience and will be coming back again during our short stay in town. We all work in the industry and by far…best meal we’ve had in a LONG time!

Google
A bit disappointed. My ikura didn’t seem super fresh (some were cloudy—you can see it the photo), and one segment of uni was definitely bad. Crab was good. Pickle wasabi was bomb. Presentation was nice, service was really kind, and decor in late afternoon was good. Sounds like others usually enjoy the food, so maybe I just had bad luck today. I could give them another try some time.

They have Fish from Toyosu market (Japan). The Omakase menu is very good and worth the value! Friendly staff and pretty atmosphere.

I walked by and saw the soft opening sign so made a reservation for a few days later. High hopes given the name and menu. Overall it was just ok given the higher price point and disappointing flavors (or lack of) for many dishes. The lobster sauce uni udon was highly disappointing as it didn’t really taste like uni or lobster and was actually kind of sweet. The curries were also on the sweet side. The sushi was good, but for $20-30 a roll you would expect that. Would maybe give them another try since it’s nice to have a place open late, but in in rush.

Google
Beautiful restaurant, good food. Loved the donburi with four kinds of tuna prepared in it, and my date loved her curry. The pot stickers were a little bland and weren't sized correctly to be easily dipped in the sauce container that came with it. This was during the soft open so they may have fixed it by now.

Yelp
I always love a late night option on Valencia for sushi! I've heard about the curry at this spot from a coworker and wanted to try it out. I went with a couple of friends and we were seated relatively quickly considering the dinner rush, which surprised me vs having to wait it out for a spot. The interior is a blend of styles with some variation in seating options. Loved the homemade ginger ale, but fair warning: stir it really well! When it arrived, the bottom was pure ginger and the top was just fizzy water. For my main, I got the pork katsu curry. The curry itself was very flavorful, and has to go with the rice. I was a little disappointed with the katsu. The pork was juicy, but the breading wasn't as crispy as I would have liked. My friend ordered the salmon chazuke, which looked absolutely amazing. I'm definitely going to try that next time! I wasn't sure what to expect for the prices, but the portion sizes were on the generous side, and we had to to-go part of the food. The service was friendly, with only some trouble getting our bill at the end of the meal.

Yelp
The salmon ikura don was a bit pricy for 4 pieces of salmon and ikura for $28. It was yummy though and generous amount of wasabi. Just wish there were more salmon. The pork katsu curry was very generous thick cut pork pieces, breaded well but the pork was a little tough/overcooked but understandable since we did a takeout order to picnic at Dolores Park. The curry was flavorful with spices, the rice was cooked perfectly. Friendly staff for prompt pickup.

Yelp
Came here for our friend's bday because we have a handroll tradition, and was impressed by the fish! We got mainly salmon, ikura, tuna, unagi, and scallop -- Fish quality was great!! There was plenty of seating inside, and it was fairly empty on a Sunday evening so the service was pretty fast. Our servers were very attentive. The only tiny downside was that the lettering of the menus were run down, to the point of slowing down the ordering process. It was definitely very aesthetic (menus were a paper scroll vibe) and matched the rest of the nice styling of the restaurant, but a lot of squinting was involved bc they also just had an extensive menu! We also got lucky with an extra unagi handroll on the house - little things like this add a lot to the experience, so super thankful.

Yelp
I have to admit I was rather disappointed with this new Japanese spot on Valencia. Having taken over the former Borderlands bookstore, the owners definitely refreshed the space with a contemporary cross between a French cottage and a Japanese kissaten. The menu was extensive, though price points were on the high side even for the Mission. Naturally that amped up my expectations of the quality of the food. Toward that end, it was a hit-or-miss affair. I don't know what triggered it, but service was strangely off here. I first ordered the $19.50 Duck Breast Goat Cheeses, which sounded like a small duck salad, but it never came. I didn't question it because the other dishes were arriving in random order. By the time I finished the meal, I didn't want it anymore, and it didn't show up on the check. Like I never ordered it. Hmm. I also ordered the $20.50 Hamaichi Kama which unfortunately arrived overcooked and dry (photo: https://yelp.to/zHUqCA38GF). As I picked at it, the $15.50 Green Bites arrived. It was billed as three tastes of vegetarian bites. No argument about that. It turned out to be blistered shishito peppers, salted edamame, and fried tofu cubes with a bit of aioli on the side (photo: https://yelp.to/TMXgk_PbFc). Fresh but rather bland. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Things finally turned around with the hand rolls. Here is where they finally excelled for me. I had two. The first was the $15.50 Salmon Ikura with shiso (photo: https://yelp.to/iaNAjYTUOE). It was genuinely fresh and overflowing with fresh salmon roe (photo). The second was the $17.50 Uni Hotate which combined creamy Santa Barbara sea urchin with a Hokkaido scallop (photo: https://yelp.to/YkVAiuqzW0). There was real finesse in the way the hand rolls were assembled, and the flavors reflected that. Perhaps I should restrict myself to sashimi the next time I come here. I guess I can forgive them for the duck oversight, but I think they should pay more attention to the kama when it's on the grill. FOOD - 3 stars...the hand rolls was the saving grace among a series of disappointments AMBIANCE - 4 stars...the decor was a nice fusion of cultures SERVICE - 2.5 stars...kinda erratic TOTAL - 3 stars...stick with the hand rolls RELATED - Exploring the Mission? Yelp
I appreciate that there is a sushi place open up late on weekdays! My friends and I were wrapping up a night event and needed a place to eat at for dinner. Luckily, we were able to be seated and accommodated right away. The interior of the restaurant is very pretty and nicely decorated, so we took some time to absorb the atmosphere before we ordered. Their menu has a variety of options, which made it difficult to decide on what to order. Everyone ordered something different and we were able to try each other's food. I ordered the Passionfruit Lemonade, Hamachi Carpaccio, Zombie Chef Roll, and Salmon Tasting to share with my boyfriend. The lemonade was sweet and refreshing, you can tell that it was homemade. The carpaccio was delicious, especially with the truffle oil. The roll was okay, it didn't really blow our minds like the carpaccio did. Lastly, the salmon tasting was delicious, but it made us realize we're not that big fans of Ikura. The servers were nice and very attentive to our table! I would definitely want to come back to try out the rest of their menu

Yelp
My favorite Japanese for food and vibes. Echigos reminds me of cafes in Japan decor wise which is a vibe you don't usually get in Japanose places in the Bay. The fish is impeccable but the star for me is their udon dishes. Both the mentaiko udon and the lobster udon are my favorite noodle dishes of all time in SF. Also love their ochazukes. Haven't had a bad thing here. I also like their coconut hojicha. Very underrated imo, but the perfect chill place to have a date or a date with girlfriends.

Yelp
I dined here with a group of friends on a weekday evening. This place was fairly empty aside from 2 other parties, yet service was very slow. It took ~20 minutes for a staff to eventually come and take our order. The sushi here is not worth it. I ordered a fire tuna roll, and it was such a tiny roll! The fish quality was mediocre at best. The roll also had a handful of green onions sprinkled on top, which was not mentioned anywhere on the menu as an ingredient. I have a food intolerance to green onions, so I would've asked for no green onions had I known. I even purposely chose a roll that didn't mention "green onions" on the menu because I noticed some rolls listed green onions as an ingredient. My roll also arrived on the same plate as a roll that someone else in my group ordered. But we weren't seated next to each other, so I had to manually move my roll over to another plate myself. I tasted a piece of the katsu curry that a friend ordered, and it was just okay. The meat quality wasn't good because it was too chewy. I prefer the katsu curry at another restaurant around 1 mile north of this place. It's a shame I didn't have a great experience here because I've walked by this place so many times before and was really curious about trying it after seeing the menu items and how nicely decorated the interior is. Sadly, things looked better than they tasted here.

Yelp
The pork katsu was a bit dry and the curry was just alright. The uni udon was nice - had good flavor and the noodle texture was good.

Yelp
Very unprofessional staff, poor communication skills, wish I'd never trusted this enough to place a to-go order. And honestly, for the 20 minute wait which they never informed me would take this long, the food was pretty bland and forgettable. Plenty of quality Japanese alternatives in SF with FAR better serivce. Skip this place! I'd give 1 star, but I actually pitty this place and don't see it lasting too much longer m

Yelp
3.5 stars but decided to round down because probably won't come again. Echigo is super cute, its got soft lighting, flowers and candles at each table, and a very calming atmosphere. Their menus are made of wood and paper and the ink is all faded (I think on purpose?) which looks cool but was actually so hard to read. 2/5 stars for accessibility... I had to try the chicken karaage because that's my favorite, but it was disappointingly not crispy at all. Chicken was super juicy and it was seasoned well but they could've turned up the heat on the oil to let the outside cook longer. 3.5/5 stars for the karaage :( We also got the spider roll and the Sakura roll. The spider roll had a lot of rice and the crab was nearly imperceptible, and there were only 5 pieces. Sakura roll was a little better, super yummy sauce and good portions of salmon and tuna. For parking- we got rlly lucky with the parking but Valencia St is a nightmare so be prepared to be circling for a while.

Yelp
Found a newer spot to order some late night sushi delivery. I've ordered here 2 times now and their sushi has been nothing short of fresh. They have a bunch of "Buy 1 get 1 free" deals and my favorite is the fried tofu. Its lightly salted with peppers and served with a nice side of mayo. My orders have been the Echigo 49er Roll, Salmon Lover Roll, Flying Dragon Roll, Cow Hollow Roll, Flaming Roaring Tiger Roll. Each have been tasty and at a fair price. Although the karaage was fresh I wish it was a bit more breaded and marinated a bit like some other places. Regardless I will be trying more rolls and items here! Also, they have great sustainable packaging with amazing presentation. Not the usual black and clear plastic containers or circular smoked containers here. They have small thank you stickers on the openings of the containers which are a nice touch. Lastly, they staple their delivery orders! A secured bag makes me more inclined to order knowing it's safe in transit

Yelp
Really charming place. Food is great - fish is fresh and katsu is crispy and juicy. Highly recommend for a go to hidden gem.

Yelp
Cute spot on Valencia! We walked in and got seared right away. The sushi here is great quality, and the service was good. I loved the handroll I got, it's definitely flavorful and was a good size. I would probably just go for nigiri/sashimi/hand rolls next time, I think their quality is better than the rolls in general even though the rolls are good overall! The drinks were veryyyy good, I would come back just to try all their different flavors alone.

Yelp
Casual and quaint sushi spot with lots of seating. Service was pleasant and prompt. The fish was super fresh. Yellowtail and tuna were so good. The miso soup was lovely with nice little squares of tofu. Bookmarked and will be back next time in SF.

Yelp
Completely foiled by the exemplar reviews. The sushi was subpar considering how much they charged. Multiple pieces from the sashimi tasting were stale and mushy. That said, the only upside was the vibe and service were nice. I guess this could be a place where you'd take a date who don't care too much about sushi.

Yelp
Went to grab dinner with a friend on a Tuesday night at 6 pm and the first thing I noticed was the interior of the restaurant. It was modern with flowers adorned all along the walls in wreaths and everything was aesthetic from the plating to the decor. The server was very kind but it was more difficult to get her attention near the end of our meal. Salmon Ikura Handroll - We were looking for a good curry but still wanted to try some of their fish. The hand rolls were very fresh: the salmon had a nice bite, the ikura added a nice saltiness and they seasoned the rice well. Pork Katsu Curry - It was warming and had a nice heat, but didn't have much spice to it. The pork katsu was definitely the star of the show, on the menu it said 12 hours braised pork and it was very soft with the crunchiest and light layer of breading on the outside. It also soaked in the curry very nicely. The topping of radish was also nice to cut the heaviness of the dish. Their menu was extensive, priced well and I'm looking forward to trying their omakase and other fish dishes next time.

Yelp
This place was very yummy ! We order a the Echigo Rainbow Roll which was very yummy. The miso soup was delicious and we had the fried chicken starter The ambiance is cute but the service was a little slow, I mean it wasn't busy at all.

Yelp
Service was pleasant. Restaurant was clean. (Extra brownie points, I saw them cleaning tables between different parties with cleaning supplies.) Food was good. At the table was a crab roll, sashimi salad, toro (fatty fish) sashimi, unagi don, katsu curry, scallops with udon noodles. All the plates were small portions, but my kids (2 adults) are picky and everyone enjoyed their choices. Besides small plates, biggest issue was the menu. The print was small and faded. I'm talking 4pgs of print so small I couldn't make out even half the items. This problem carried down to the tea selection. I shared the menu with 3 other people we all had same issue, including the waiter. All that said, I tried the"Lavendar tea"... and it was delicious. Tab a bit over $200, so I'd say pricey for what was served.

Yelp
We were interested in trying this newly-opened sushi spot in The Mission. Initial impressions when we stepped in was that the place had a very unique aesthetic and ambiance that you don't really see often in San Francisco. It was especially "home-y" and cozy, it kinda reminded me of someone's living or dining room in a strange way... The food was presented really well and prepared quickly, but nothing particularly stood out to be completely honest. We ordered a variety of things, 2 rolls (Salmon Lover Roll, Valencia Roll), Pork Katsu Curry, and the Kaki Fry (which the waitress recommended). It was all SOLID, but nothing was SPECTACULAR. It was pretty empty when we arrived (though it was a very early dinner at 5:00pm), so the service was very fast and attentive, which we appreciated. Overall, I don't know if I'd come back, but I wasn't particularly disappointed that I tried it either.

Yelp
on par with some of the other reviews, this place serves good looking food that doesn't match its pricing. the staff are patient with us. the restaurant has cozy vibes The Lion King is my favorite roll to get at every Japanese restaurant here it is closer to seared than baked and kinda odd. The sushi rice was cooked with too much water so it was packed and mushy. The Mummy roll was okay. The chicken katsu is one of two driest chicken katsu that I've had in the last 5 years. The curry roux is good but there is very little of it. Grateful that they are open late but just not good enough for me to come back.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
I walked by this place and I thought it was really cute so I went in. I ordered the fried tofu and the niku curry witches, beef slices in curry over rice. The fried tofu was actually not very crispy at all. The outside coating was very chewy which I was very surprised. As for the beef curry, I felt that the curry itself had to much star anise flavor and it didn't taste like traditional Japanese curry. I was a little disappointed.. I really wanted to love this place. It was very homie and they had a really large menu option but sadly, I probably won't go back.
google avatar

Dale D.

Yelp
Ambiance was cozy, well decorated, good in between for both a date night or a casual dinner. I really want to post a positive review because the staff were so kind. However, the sushi was mediocre. Rolls were very basic... fresher than grocery store sushi but flavor combos similar to grocery store. Fish was mostly fresh. I wouldn't recommend the nigiri tasting - some pieces were odd and fishy. Fried tofu was the highlight. Wasabi aioli was a fun twist of favor. I'd definitely return to try the non-sushi food items though!

Yelp
Initially I was wondering why "home cook" was added to the resto name. IMO, the simpler the better and Echigo is good enough. But, after dining at Echigo Home Cook, I get it. The hospitality and vibe is on-point...it's cozy and homey, and the staff goes out of their way to make sure you're having a great meal...like you're guests in their home. They even brought TT duck treats and a bowl of water. Any business that treats my dog well...take my monies! Soft opening last month is Echigo Home Cook. They were previously located in The Marina. Open for takeout, delivery, and dine-in. Rezzies available on Yelp. M E N U Japanese cuisine - extensive menu with apps/izakaya, sushi, donburi, curry, udon, sandos, omakase, etc. Daily fish specials. Kid's meal available. Beer & sake available. F O O D * Complimentary Fried Tofu w/ salt + pepper seasoning, wasabi mayo // 4 stars: http://tinyurl.com/rbfmj4u3 While waiting for our order, they kindly brought this out for us. Solid starter - the fried tofu was golden brown, crispy, and soft. Paired well with the creamy, zesty wasabi [kewpie] mayo. * Deluxe Chirashi Don: Chef selected seasonal premium fish w/ kurodai, akami, hokkaido hotate, a5 miyazaki wagyu, zuke sake (?), ikura, otoro, hokkaido uni, toro tartar, hamachi toro, and red crab ($69.50 x2) // 4.5 stars: http://tinyurl.com/nr5m6p63 Pristine cuts of fresh fish (~10 pc) laid over perfectly cooked sushi rice. The glistening cuts were rich and buttery, slightly seasoned with soy sauce so extra wasn't really needed. Plus, the ikura added burst of umami. The sushi rice was well-seasoned and the proper room temp with a good bite and stickiness. To nitpick, the A5 wagyu was overtorched (I like it rarer) and the price point is quite steep. Then again, you're getting a premium selection at a premium location on Valencia. Treat yourself. * Pork Katsu Sando: Fried + breaded 12-hour braised pork katsu, housemade tonkatsu sauce, shredded cabbage ($19.95) // 4.5 stars: http://tinyurl.com/2a5kewjz First time having katsu that's braised before being fried and it's a game changer. The thick pork cutlet was crispy on the outside and hella juicy + soft on the inside....sandwiched between pillowy soft japanese milk bread. The tangy tonkatsu sauce (like worcestershire sauce) helped cut through the meatiness while the cabbage gave it a fresh crunch. Since the cutlet is thick, I would have liked some sauce on the side for dipping. S E R V I C E The owner, Anna and staff are hospitality driven, so sweet and welcoming. Prompt food service for early dinner service. A M B I A N C E Cute date night vibes! Warm, cozy, and tastefully decorated with a mix of tables and high tops (no seats at the sushi bar). Also, great for a solo dining. If you go for an early dinner, it's quiet enough that you can read a book while enjoying your meal. P A R K I N G Difficult street parking but there's a garage 1.5 blocks away on 21st/Bartlett. Overall, Echigo Home Cook is serving high-quality Japanese eats with great hospitality and homey vibes. If you're in The Mission, check them out!

Yelp
My family and I tried this place, and we were welcomed by our server Henry. He was very accommodating and definitely helped a lot with my dad's picky tastes. Thank you so much for the amazing food that tasted so good! Thank you to the cooks!

Yelp
TL:DNR; Food was good, service was good, ambiance was quiet and pleasant. There are still kinks that need to be worked out, but I came on the 3rd day of the soft opening and would definitely try it again. Ambiance: The place was spacious (old Borderlands Books location), clean, well lit, and quiet. There were only 4 occupied tables at the time, so it may have contributed to the noise levels. Service: Echigo has a very extensive menu. They were very kind in giving us space to review this whole booklet. They checked in on us to see if we had any questions, but it didn't feel overbearing. The only thing I would have liked is if they told us what fish we were being served with the nigiri pieces - especially if you're someone that's new to sushi. Food/Drinks: We got the Hakushika hanakohaku yuzu sake, which I found way too sweet. It was still good, but I liked our second choice much better, which was far more mellow (the name of the sake eludes me, so I'm sorry I can't give you the name). The pork curry was crispy and light. It didn't feel oily or greasy. The curry was thick and flavorful, atop a bed of fluffy rice. We ordered the sakura roll and another roll, which I forgot the name. The rolls were tightly wrapped and didn't fall apart. The only downside is that the rolls are very sauce-heavy, so some of the light fish flavors and nuances are washed away. Next time, I might ask for the sauce to be placed on the side, so I can dip it, instead. The sushi set combo was also a delight and the fish was fresh, however, as I stated earlier, I would have liked it if they told us the types of fish for the 6 pieces of nigiri. The flavors of the fish were delicate and I enjoyed the pieces that I tried. All in all, the prices were good, the service was good, and the fish was good. I would definitely come back again in a few months to try it out again, once the kinks are all worked out.

Yelp
Deserves to be even busier! Had a great Chiraishi bowl. Clean, new interior and very spacious--good for parties large and small

Yelp
Came here on a whim for brunch one weekend - the space is cute and homey, plenty of space and no need to wait. We had the veggie gyozas, which we both agreed were surprisingly delicious and packed with veggies. The futo maki vegetable roll was also good- tasted similar to a Korean kimbap, although the rolls weren't very tight so it kept falling apart. But the star of the meal was definitely the pork tonkatsu - a big thick piece of beautifully cooked pork with crispy beadinf- definitely one of the best tonkatsus in SF. The only downside were the drinks - really expensive and not that interesting. Nonetheless I would definitely check this place out and definitely have the tonkatsu!

Yelp
Wow! The food, service, and ambiance couldn't have been better for our small family gathering on Father's Day weekend. Staff was personable, accommodating, and so helpful in providing recommendations to the expansive menu. Udon noodles are prepared on site. All dishes were presented with aplomb. The decor and general ambiance are welcoming. Street parking is limited--we easily walked Valencia and visited a local bookshop after dinner. We started with an easy selection of nigiri (10-piece), four different rolls: avocado, dragon, rainbow, 49er; salmon seared on rice with a soup base and matcha sauce; udon lobster noodles; and rose tea. The sake was good! Our family of four adults and two kids spent $300. Will easily return.

Yelp
I think I have to give Echigo a 4.5/5. The sushi was fresh and thick, and the katsu was well-constructed, but for the price point? I would expect much more. The breading of the katsu fell apart as I grasped it within my chopsticks and the sushi rice was just slightly undercooked. A great showing for just being open a few months, but some improvement to be made. The front of house staff were wonderful and accommodating and I appreciate their service.

Yelp
Went here for Valentine's Day. Probably the worst dining experience I've had in over a year. - It took 30 minutes after seating to get a glass of water and for them to get our orders. We had witnessed multiple get up before they finished eating. - It took the first hour for the first course of the fixed menu to come, and another hour for the second. We and my partnered ordered nigiri for the second course, and ours contained far more wasabi then I have ever had, and in was different than appearance from our neighbors. We also had to ask for soy sauce. Waiter offered no explanation for the delay until then, but mentioned they had not stopped taking online orders. The desert came quickly after, but it was a Tiramisu which may or may not have been made in house. - I was relieved when I received a check for one course, but of course they went back and corrected that. At no point did I receive a freebie or discount as an apology. Needless to say, it was high overpriced in terms of quality, quantity, and service. Dine here at your caution.

Yelp
Had a great midweek dinner here with my friend. First thing we loved was that the restaurant is open til 11pm on weeknights! When most restaurants are closing down around 9 or 10, Echigo is going strong. We loved the ambiance - the design was somewhat minimal and catchy. I used to go to Borderlands back in the day, so thought it might feel weird, but they did an excellent job in the transformation. Second, the chef's omekase was outstanding. Some of the pieces were lightly smoked which was a nice touch. The yuzu infused selections were also subtle and reminded me a lot of the places I've been to in Japan (kansai side). Third, the service was great. Our waiter was super nice and friendly. I believe one of the chefs (or owner?) brought us some dishes. We ordered this really nice Orion beer and they brought us some salt and pepper tofu to eat with it. In conclusion, they know what they're doing here. Check it out!

Yelp
This is a great addition to Valencia street! The menu is expansive, filled with sushi rolls, nigiri, dons, curries and honestly every Japanese dish you could imagine. During my Wednesday evening at this establishment, my friend and I ordered the Hamachi Carpacio, Chirasi Don, and Duck Breast Chazume. The Carpacio and Don were my favorites of the night. The Carpacio was fresh and melted in my mouth. The Chirasi Don was filled with large pieces of sashimi that paired well with the flavorful sushi rice. It wasn't too crowded in the restaurant and the wait staff was very attentive and came to check up on us. This is the perfect restaurant if you're looking for quality Japanese dishes, a cozy yet inviting vibe and excellent service!

Yelp
I got an unagi don along with a spider roll. Wait service was good and my food came out fairly quickly for something that's freshly made. I love how the roll I ordered didn't fall apart when I used chopsticks nor did the unagi fall apart either while I was eating. I was surprised when the waitress gave me a free side of fried tofu which was also great.

Yelp
Fist two experiences were great. But 3rd time returning, I asked for a different menu because the home printed sheets in the fold had 80% faded and stained oiled sheets. It's gross to hand someone termed filled paper, but besides that I'm more disturbed that they would subject me and my partner to struggle to read the letters and ingredients even after we asked for a menus with clear none faded letters. Not cool. Reprint your menus please, it's the least a restaurant can do in a competing zone in a time when restaurants should want to get the basics to survey and thrive. Thx.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious and the ambience is incredibly charming and tasteful. I've made a few visiting since opening. The fish was very fresh and high quality. The chicken katsu curry is my favorite take on the dish I've had in SF. It's pretty easy to get a walk in, give it a try!

Yelp
This place is soooo good!! I stopped here with my wife when we happened to be on Valencia for an event. In need of dinner, we decided to take a chance, and we were glad we did. We got the pork katsu curry and the rare salmon katsu, which came with rice, a small green salad and homemade tartar sauce. Normally I don't care for tartar sauce but this one was so good. It paired so well with the tender salmon. And the pork was really good too, with rich flavor and a good meaty texture that had a substantial bite. Not to mention that the curry had a wonderful depth of flavor. The decor is well considered, there are a lot of interesting wall pieces to look at. And the plates and dishware are unique and pleasing. The service was wonderful too, we had a nice long dinner without feeling the least bit rushed. If anything, we had to make an effort to get the bill. But that's not a bad thing! It's a place to go for a date night with long conversations accompanied by delicious food. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Went with a group of 4 on Saturday night at 7pm. No issues getting a same-day reservation. When we arrived on time we still were asked to wait for 10mins despite there being plenty of open tables. The menu is diverse and everything was delicious and beautifully presented, from the sushi to the curry to the beer selection. Service was extremely friendly but a bit awkward. It was a "cold open" so understandable. The staff seemed overwhelmed and we were left to fend for ourselves in some cases. Overall a good experience - I'll probably be back to try again when the place has a few more months under its belt to work out the kinks.

Yelp
Lovely space. But service is soooo bad! We arrived at 6:30.... As of 7:29 we have 3 out of 5 plates! They did not have one of the appetizers. What a disaster!! Party of 5 and we did not get the chance to eat together. Never coming here again! Understaffed and non- customer service attitude. Stay away from this place until they get their stuff together.

Yelp
Beautifully decorated but the service is snail slow. I was realllly excited to try this place out. Im sitting here attempting to enjoy "dinner" but the only thing that we had was the hotate after waiting for 1 hour. For reference, we arrived here with reservations at 715pm. Ordered the 4 course prefixe off the valentines menu. It's currently 845pm and only 1 dish has arrived out of the 4. My issue is that if this establishment cannot handle that many patrons, please don't allow that many reservations or take walk-ins. We looked over to our neighbors food and saw that it was beautifully presented. When we decided to cut dinner short (after waiting 1hr and 45 mins and still one out of four dishes at the moment), our waiter told us that our second course was ready but he would cancel the rest for us. When the food did arrive, it was so sloppy. As mentioned, our neighbor's dishes were beautifully presented and because they finally realized how behind they were, they were trying to push the dishes out even if it meant being sloppy. It definitely ruined my experience and I definitely will not be returning. I'm sitting here super irritated and hungry on a day that's supposed to be about love and also my anniversary with my husband. The table next to my neighbor also had only 1 dish and they were seated the same time we were. They also decided to leave after getting 1 dish. I do have to be fair and state that the waiter did comp the hotate and the sake. However, he charged us for 5 pieces the nigiri which was $42. Was it worth $42? Absolutely not. This was the dish where I felt like presentation wasn't there. The rice was half assed. They're charging a premium for half assed food. I'm glad we cut dinner short. I'm just so disappointed because like I said, I was really excited to try this place but we left feeling like we wasted our time. Date night doesn't come often now that we have a child and we wasted date night on this.

Yelp
Echigo is a rare gem of a place that amazingly is open until 2 or 3am for takeout. At that hour in SF, averse to late nights as it is, usually the only options are pizza or burritos. I've been here a few times and enjoyed the Tuna Lover roll, a selection of sashimi and nigiri, and a couple of the dons. Prices are a little on the higher side but quality is good and the team there are super sweet. I'd like to try additional rolls but, with the exception of the aforementioned Tuna Lover, they tend to be a bit saucy. I can't do aioli/egg based sauces, and the online ordering doesn't allow customizations, which would be a nice addition. Overall though a great spot.

Yelp
I understand this is their soft opening and hopefully things will be tweaked in the future, but had an average to bellow average experience. This place has potential with its menu and space so I do hope things pick up later down the line. We ordered the chicken karaage, mentaiko udon, a sushi roll (forgot which one), and ankimo. The ankimo was alright but they plate it with a lot of other components like pickled cucumbers and other micro greens that it kind of overpowers the flavour of the ankimo which is delicate to begin with. I don't think so much needs to be garnished with it since it's an ingredient that stands on its own. Seeing it plated like that kind of gave me an idea of what I was going to be expecting. Chicken karaage was not crispy enough and white meat is used. I think if they were to tweak something, they should change white meat to dark. And since it was also white meat, it's not very juicy and borderline dry. It also could've used more time in the fryer and maybe a smidge more sauce on the side (good portion though!) The mentaiko udon was disappointing to me because I am a big fan of mentaiko. The menu does not say whether it is a cold or hot noodle dish, but it was cold when received so maybe it should be clarified. While they give a good dollop of mentaiko to mix in your noodles, the flavour of it was completely overpowered by the heap of green scallions and fried garlic. The egg is soft poached which is also kind of pointless because it's cooked to the point where you can't really incorporate it into the noodle if you wanted to mix everything (which is usually assumed to do with mentaiko pastas) and ends up as clumps in your dish. It was surprisingly a bland dish given all those ingredients and all you can taste are the fried onions (the mentaiko flavour wasn't even there) The sushi roll was okay. The rice was the big offender in which it felt over cooked and mushy. They season the rice enough, but the consistency of the rice could be a bit firmer than gummy. While I understand they just opened in recent times, the other reviews about service weren't overreacting and it was very odd and spotty service. Granted there are only two servers and I saw they were doing their best, but I don't think they were able to balance the restaurant as a whole. Service took awhile to get a hold of just to order, our food came out in okay timing, but I noticed that many other dishes would be rung in from the kitchen just to sit at the window for quite some time. When paying, they took our card but forgot to even give it back (which was a first I had seen happen) so it was clear that there is some kind of disorganisation or lack of help in front of house to keep a good flow of service. Overall it was an okay place and had potential but won't come back here for a while. Maybe if I hear things have changed a bit I'd try it again, but I hope they fine tune some things.

Yelp
Sashimi from the daily fresh menu was very fresh and flavorful. Shrimp Tempura Roll was very tasty and hot with good sauce and crunch. The roll had 5 pieces, which I would say is smaller than most places. The prices on the menu generally seem about 25% higher than other great sushi places in SF. The menu is has an unusually large set of choices for nigiri and sashimi and it seems that quality is likely to be very high. The menu seemed to be missing some appetizer items, such as seaweed salad and tempura vegetables that are available at most places. Perhaps the more lowbrow less authentic items are not emphasized on this menu. The number of choices is generally quite high. The service was very good. The atmosphere is very comfortable, clean, attractive, new, and well done. There are many wreaths with flowers and herbs on the walls; so much that the place has a similar scent to a flower shop, which is lovely and refreshingly unusual for a sushi place. Many of the great sushi places in SF have smelled quite permanently fishy for decades. I will go again for a light lunch. I will go other places with larger portions and smaller prices, such as Koo in Inner Sunset when I am hungry.

Yelp
Went here yesterday and we ordered the mango tuna roll and the veggie dragon roll. Both so good and the eggplant on the veggie dragon roll was grilled to perfection.

Yelp
not super busy - Stopped by at 7:30 pm on Friday and it looked half empty. But as we had a movie to catch, we came back at 11:15 pm and there were 3 other parties there. There is a lot of seating available. Interior design - didn't feel super cohesive on close examination, but had a cozy cafe vibes Food - we got the yuzu beer, salmon and avocado hand roll, valencia special roll, and the dessert of the day, which was yuzu panna cotta. The raw fish tasted fresh overall and the panna cotta was good. The yuzu beer was definitely a light beer with a hint of yuzu, but personally not $12 worth reorder good. Overall, I do think the food is a bit pricey for what it was, but it was good.

Yelp
We came here for my birthday and We couldn't have been more pleased. The service was excellent and the fish was incredibly fresh and tasty. I had not had hamachi toro before and it did not disappoint. All the rolls we had (Flying Dragon, Echigo Rainbow, and Sakura) were well balanced with the perfect amount of rice, fish, and toppings so all the flavors melted in your mouth in the best possible way. The nigiri was on point as well. Delicious! Kudos to the chefs. We will be back!

Yelp
Very Instagram-friendly spot, with lots of flower arrangements all over the place making for a pretty vibe. The sushi is better than average for SF too, with surprisingly large servings. Staff were fast and efficient.

Yelp
I ordered the Kaisen don. So tiny, I literally finished everything in 3mins. Still Starving after $75 (with tax & tip) ...like I'm a little girl..who can't finish a full in&out meal (burger with fries) . Food is mediocre..definitely can find better value Kaisen or chirashi at other restaurants. I guess if you are hungry and craving for raw fish, like you actually want a fulfilling meal this is definitely not the best place to go.
