21 Places to Drink and Dine Around Joshua Tree National Park

"The bar at Edchada’s in Twentynine Palms serves as an unlikely melting pot of Marines from the nearby base, hikers from the national park, and local desert dwellers. One thing they all have in common? The need for a good margarita. Edchada’s serves peach margaritas, strawberry margaritas, Midori margaritas, and even a moonlight margarita, made with an electrifying dash of blue curaçao. The menu also features burritos, chimichangas, tacos, sopas, and other Mexican favorites." - Krista Diamond, Farley Elliott

Went after hiking at Joshua Tree. It was close to their closing time but they welcomed us in with no hesitation. They provided complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa had a great taste and a little spice to it! I got an enchilada and taco meal and the enchilada was my favorite! The staff was very friendly and accommodating!

If you’re on the hunt for authentic, delicious, and straight-up unforgettable Mexican food in California — look no further. This spot is the real deal. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth, smiles, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like you’re dining at a close friend’s house (the friend who can really cook). Let’s talk food: • The margaritas are hands-down the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, not too sour — just dangerously smooth. • The burritos? Massive, stuffed with flavor, and wrapped so tightly they could survive a road trip. • The chimichangas are golden, crisp, and generously filled — chef’s kiss. • And don’t even get me started on the soup — it’s like your abuela made it with love and a hint of magic. Now, for the real MVP of our visit: CJ. If you’re lucky enough to sit in his section, you’re in for an experience. CJ doesn’t just serve — he elevates. Attentive, funny, and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, he went above and beyond to make sure our night was perfect. Seriously, ask for CJ by name. You’ll thank me later. ✨ Great food, over-the-top service, and CJ? This place isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a reason to celebrate. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
It's a decent little tex Mex restaurant. The variety was pretty standard. The meat seemed a bit dry. The margarita was reasonably priced. It sat near the window and was hot the entire time. They should also wipe down the menus. It's kinda odd when im looking at food and there's specs of someone else's food on the page.

Google
Edchada's Resto was referred to us, we were looking a good place to eat. Teresa our server suggested very tummy filling and savory food. We enjoyed our orders. The complimentary tortilla chips was warm and crunchy. The guacamole matches with all the food we ordered.

Best food and drinks in the area and state. Service was amazing. Can’t wait to return. CJ and Shelby at the bar were so nice and gracious.

Updated May 2025: I would give zero stars if I could but because of their good customer service one star suffices but the food has gotten way worse. Went with my girlfriend Friday night at 530pm weekend of Mother’s Day. We ordered the sweet habanero wings and shrimp fajitas. My girlfriend took one bite of the wings and immediately started to turn red and throw up. They took off the fajitas and I took off right away. I should have refused to pay for the wings!! No exaggerations here! We ended up in the ER and stayed until midnight. I do not recommend and I will never return! November 2022: First time visiting. Went on a Thursday evening around 6pm with a group of friends. It was busy when we arrived but we were immediately seated. It took a long time for our server to come but once she did it she had a smile on her face & that made us feel a bit more at ease. We all ordered different things and we agree that the food was mediocre at best but the drinks were delicious. I definitely recommend the drinks here & I will return. March 2023: went back and my 3stars remain. Drinks are good. Food not so much.

Good afternoon Today is the first time I go to this place I heard a lot of good things about it food was amazing but the service was very bad Shebly the name of the server I only saw her when I placed the order and after I asked for spoon and napkins she gave me that then she never asked me how is your food? Would you need anything else? Clearly she has issue with her manger CJ she changed to the worst after he came finally she yelled at me from distance and asked me do you need your check just because I looked at her then her manager CJ told her you don't need to yell at him like this then she told her manager shhhhh? Anyway I give credit for CJ the manger he listened to me and I told him how I feel about the bad experience and she expects me to tip her with this bad customer service? If she talks to her manager like this in front of customers how do you think she talks to him if there is no customers respect is the key All what I am expecting to eat and have a nice service is there something wrong with that? Is that high expectation? Maybe I am a little sensitive but I work as waiter before and I know treats all kind with respect weather they tip you $0 or $100 Because it doesn't matter if you have tables have 10 people or you have table with only 1 person you never know who will tip you higher ? Please balance between dealing with your manager and dealing with your customer have a blessed day we all have bad days but we all have to learn how to balance

Despite a few bad reviews we picked this restaurant over others nearby because we wanted margaritas. It was a poor choice. I had a bland and extremely watery Chile Verde. My wife had $21 beef fajitas that had very little beef. And the $14 dollar margaritas were weak and essentially tasted of margarita mix. The service was good though. Waitress was friendly and food came out quick. She was even apologetic and brought out additional meat when we showed her how little beef was in the beef fajitas. In summary. If you decide to come here for decent margaritas, you'll be disappointed. If you come for good food, you'll be disappointed. Basically, you'll be disappointed.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place because of the ambience and large size of the restaurant after seeing the photos on google. It didn't disappoint. It's nicely decorated with a large bar right as you walk in. They offer outdoor seating as well. They had high cushioned booths paired with bar stools right next to the bar as well and that's where we sat. Service was quick. Our server was talkative and funny too. I ordered a chile relleno for under $7 and it was huge. It was also delicious and I paired it with a blended mango margarita ($12.50) My partner had a burrito which comes with the soup of the day or a salad. Went with the soup of the day which was an albóndiga (meatball) soup. That combo was $12 which was also very reasonably priced. We had a great lunch and the prices were perfect for our party of two. I'd love to come back during happy hour soon.

Yelp

Yelp
went at 6:40 pm online says they close at 9pm on Sundays noticed the door said 8 pm on Sunday. staff was super rude yelled are you fkn serious and when I asked what the issue was he rudely and loudly said we close at 7, then grabbben some menus and rushed off to a table did even ask us to follow. I reminded the door says 8 and online says 9 and we left. won't be going back. we use to go here all the time.

Yelp
Went in today with the family before they fly home and order machaca and eggs over medium by far the best meal I've had there so far! The bartender provided prompt service and great drinks!
google avatar

Ellonora I.

Yelp
I ordered machaca and eggs. There was barely one egg in the order. I was really looking forward to the meal but was clearly disappointed in the proportion of eggs to protein and the cooks refusal to cook my families order to their request. The customer service was great otherwise but the food service was disappointing and discouraging

Yelp
So I was visiting my partner who lives on base in this Area. I was out looking for food while he was getting ready and talking with his family. I decided to get some Tacos and a Margarita, when walking in I had to seat myself and get my own napkins. I had to ask for chips and salsa. While other servers had been passing me up and serving other people food, drinks and chips. So I was always on edge with feeling outcasted. I sat at the bar by myself. When I was drinking my margarita, I found a bug in my drink and let the server know. Rather than try and accommodate or acknowledge the wrong doing he just shined it off. So I asked for another drink. ( Im not expecting any type of special treatment but I did expect to get the drink half off or something like that ) I was served and charged for both drinks at full price. Even when ordering during happy hour. I came to this spot because AppleMaps. Now I regret spending $30. I also noticed that they just dip the blender in 3-Stage cleaner. They don't wash or rinse anything off. They literally dip it in 1)Soap Water 2) Rinse Water 3)Blue Chemical water. So I was just irritated about how half fast they do things here. They don't even check up on how you're doing. Just walk around doing nothing. Please avoid if possible. The Tacos saved it from a 1-Star.

Yelp
Excellent service and atmosphere. Great margaritas and food. Highly recommended restaurant in 29Palms. A must stop when passing through.

Yelp
Edchadas is located right off 29 Palms highway. There is a small parking lot to the rear of the building with limited spots as well as street parking. Inside you'll find a small bar top and the restaurant is filled with lots of short tables. The decor is nothing fancy by any means, you can come in shorts and flip flops and be just fine which I appreciate! The food itself is ok. The meat in the burrito was pretty dry and the fajitas were served with a very small amount of meat - it was mostly peppers and onion. The salsa tasted like blended canned tomatoes with chunks of white onion. It's almost watered down with chunks of onion. Chips were warm and salty. Beans and rice were decent. Service was polite and quick. Overall, we'd stop in again as there isn't much here on this strip but we hope they improve with not serving dry meat in the burritos and a more generous portion for fajitas ; especially because I ordered them a la carte so I wasn't able to fill up on beans and rice. Service was friendly and fast.

Yelp
The prices could be better for one. It's too expensive here for the location and what you get. Paid over $35 a person average after 18% tip and only 1 basket of free chips with salsa for 4 people. Sign of the times I guess. It was also a little cool inside. The food was good though like always. Thank you.

Yelp
Cj and Shelbie where great. We had an amazing time. We never ran out of drinks and we had our food very fast. We are regulars and they are amazing every time we come in. Now Kenny on another note is very vocal and thinks he is funny (he's not). But overall it was a great experience and we love Edchadas. (Ps...get the queso

Yelp
Edchadas has been a go-to place for my family for as long as I can remember. The food is always great, as well as the service. When we were deciding on a place to host my father's celebration of life, we knew that Edchadas was a right fit. They were able to accommodate our group (30+) and coordinated the madness with ease. Talk to CJ if you ever decide to have a large gathering there. He made sure that our group was well taken care of.

Yelp
I gave a five star review because of Kenneth! He needs to be moved to server. What a beautiful young man. Wilbur is also a great waiter. But Kenneth deserves more!

Yelp
CJ provided excellent service! Food and drinks were perfect. Great place to eat after hiking in Joshua Tree.

Yelp
Gloopy cheese. Do you love cheese? That's what this place is serving up. Our plates were smothered in a good bag of oily three blend taco cheese from your local supermarket. Food had little to no taste or flavor.... And yes, I do love to indulge in cheese as everyone else but this teetered on inedible due to the amount of cheese.

John W.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst Mexican food I ever had , omg so bad . I'm not sure why they in business . My friend took me here out of convenience. The rice looked and tasted like out of the trash a week old . Do yourself a big favor and avoid. They can't pay you enough to eat here .

Dahrius B.

Yelp
It was a tale as old as time. I was in the ER, getting my stomach pumped, thinking about life. Reminiscing about the times I had in the past week, I realized...my life would never be the same. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start from the very beginning. It was a sunny day in March, and my friends and I were cruising down the road, nursing hangovers from Vegas, when we stumbled upon the town of Twentynine Palms. Buildings materialized out of the desert, a hint of civilization after endless desert. Craving some familiarity in a strange place, we searched for some mexican food. The first name popped up on google maps, and we set our course for Edchada's Taqueria, blissfully unaware of what was to come. We pulled into the parking lot, and were greeted with a 21+ sign, the first warning that this establishment might not be what we expected. Tentatively, we opened the door, and took in the sight of a dingy bar. Several older men, with a look in their eyes that indicated they saw things in the war they couldn't unsee, sat at the bar. A host materialized from the shadows, and we told him we were ordering to go. He seemed immediately displeased, but nonetheless, he gave us menus and waited, always keeping one eye on us as if we were going to steal a chimichanga when he wasn't looking. After perusing the menu, we eyed each other before steve finally got up from his seat and approached the host. "Can I place an order?" he asked. In a tone dripping with disdain, the host responded "yeah⁉" Slightly taken aback, steve proceeded to order. With a powerful sigh, the host beckoned for the next order. We went up one by one, tentatively placing our orders. We then sat back down, awaiting our food...and our fate. Finally, the first order came out. What seemed at first glance to be a simple carnitas burrito and a quesadilla would spell our doom. Steve went to grab his food, but I realized it was my order. I went to grab the bag, but as I lifted it the host erupted. "NO NO NO NO NO" he screamed. "you just lost half your meal" he growled at me. Terrified, I was frozen in my spot as he examined the contents of the bag. Luckily, the food was intact. Shaken from the encounter, I sat back down, wondering what else would happen as the orders came out. Surprisingly, the rest of the food came out without a hitch, and we breathed a sigh of relief as we thanked the host and started leaving. "Call your parents. Tell them you're alive. Be safe out there." The warning echoed in our minds as we departed. Little did we know that the omens would come true. We returned to the hotel, our skepticism outweighed by our hunger. I decided to try the quesadilla first. I opened the box and was greeted by what could only be described as strings of raw beef, as if someone grated a cow into my quesadilla. Nevertheless, I was hungry, and so I dug in. The first warning sign came later, as we were leaving to watch the sunset. My stomach grumbled and I started to feel off, but this was only the calm before the storm. As we drove back to the hotel, I started feeling dizzy. I concentrated on the road, but my stomach started making noises I had only heard once before, from my $20 target blender. Lia stepped on the gas, and I found myself lying on the hotel bed. I drank some water, and for a second, I felt some relief, but suddenly I was slipping away. The voices around me got quieter, and the room got smaller, smaller, and smaller, before it faded to black. I came to with a bright light in my face, and a masked face above me. I was confused for a moment, before I realized it was the hospital. The doctor asked with a kind voice if I was ok, before explaining that my stomach needed to be pumped. It was painful, but I got through it, and after some rest, was cleared to leave. We passed hundreds of doors, all seemingly filled with poor souls having their stomachs pumped. Ok the way out, we passed the receptionist, who bid us farewell. I looked back, and the wing of the hospital had a small plaque on the wall. I squinted, and as I read it, my stomach dropped for the 100th time that day. It read "Edchadas victims." We hurriedly exited, and I realized I was lucky to be alive. I was go rever scarred by the trip, but the bonds I had formed with my friends would last the rest of my life. Service: 4.6/5 Food: 4.3/5 Ambiance: 4.9/5 Overall: 4.8/5. Would go back

Robert M.

Yelp
MVP... Shelby the bartender is amazing and personable and professional, and she can make amazing drinks. Just ask her to customize myself for you and she takes care of it and it is always amazing and then the kenneth busser is amazing. They should actually make him a server because he's always paying attention to what people need and he cleaned everything up and he always delivers drinks on time. He is a number one.

Yelp
Food was okay. I had the señor burrito and it was decent. The service could have been better. My wife had the carne asada plate and she like it. We also had two margaritas and they were okay. Overall, the place was okay, a bit overpriced, but it was not that bad.

Jessica R.

Yelp
We got a chicken salad bowl and a carne asada burrito. It was super good and filling. The service was great. The restaurant looked very authentic.
google avatar

Greg P.

Yelp
Poor choices by the chef/cook. I had the veggie burrito, my wife had a taco salad with chicken. The salsa that comes with the chips was excellent. Clearly house made, smoky, tart, with just a hint of spicy. That was the only good thing about the food. The veggie burrito was filled with what was clearly a grocery store frozen veggie mix: Lima beans, carrots, peas and corn, not even cooked enough to be hot, inside a tortilla with rice, beans, lettuce and black olives. It was barely edible. The guacamole on my wife's taco salad tasted old and bland, needed salt and lime. Altogether uninspiring sauces and seasonings, bland, basic and inauthentic. When I'm paying for a sit-down meal, I expect more.

Erick T.

Yelp
Great food. Strong drinks. Very fresh. Chips were fresh, warm and not soaked of grease. Staff was very attentive and quick with the drinks. Probably the best drinks in the area to be honest. Place is clean. They have an A from the health department. Staff keeps up with you and they allow tips on cards which is nice, I never have cash on me :(

Mary B.

Yelp
A little pricey but food good. Yes I will eat there as often as possible. When in 29 palms.

Jack H.

Yelp
As usual they serve the best drinks! Kenneth was incredible and extremely friendly. We frequent Edchadas every time we are in 29 Palms

Dawn C.

Yelp
Kenneth is AMAZING! The food was in ridiculous proportions. Great great margaritas.

Steven C.

Yelp
Service is good. Staff makes you feel warm, welcome, and like a long time friend. Good food for all tastes, my favorite is a QUESADILLA fajita style. Soup is yummy on a cold day. Drinks are plentiful. You may choose from an alcohol of your choice. My favorite is the classic margarita.
google avatar

Jeshua F.

Yelp
OH MY GOSH SOOOOOOO GOOD Food came out so good chips were hot & fresh as the salsa was the perfect spice level. And these B!TCHE$ hooked it UP with that margarita had me so tipsy fr it was DELISH Edchadas is overall bomb not even gonna lie..

Amy H.

Yelp
Kenneth was awesome!!! He was super friendly and very alert to our needs. Highly recommend this young man as a server. Also our bartender Shelby made yummy drinks. Thank you to both of you for great service!

Keren B.

Yelp
Five star experience all because of our busser Kenneth. He did all the work and was attentive to our big group of ten. He definitely should be a server as he is a great people person, attentive, friendly and does ALL the work!
google avatar

Ruben Y.

Yelp
Food was quite good, better than I expected. I expected worse based off the reviews. Service was fast and friendly. Drinks were solid. My wife and I each ordered a plate of enchiladas, and they were good. Not the greatest, we've had better, but for it being in twentynine palms, it was definitely worth it. I wouldn't mind coming back. I would definitely recommend this spot though.

Swara M.

Yelp
Great food and service! It is also centrally located, so traveling to and from the hiking trails and our Airbnb was very convenient! I would love to come back again!

Jennifer J.

Yelp
We decided to stop at Echadas in 29 Pslms before an event. We were pleased to walk in and be seated directly around 5:30 pm. Service was super slow. We got our chips and salsa and then our drinks were ordered but did not show up until almost right when our food should up. Not a great combo when they serve you spicy salsa with nothing to cool your mouth. On the positive, the food arrived hot and was delicious. It was a little spicier than what we were used to but delicious none the less. I had the chile colorado burrito which had nice chunks of beef in it. The restaurant was pretty busy but you could still hear the person across from you. The floor could have used a good sweep, but things were clean. I wish there was some Spanish music to listen to. All in all it was a nice dinner. Although they need to train one of their bus boys that jamaica is not pomegranate juice!
google avatar

Breticus E.

Yelp
What nasty food that was served. Everyone was covered in cheese with absolutely zero definition of food items. Cheaply made with even less imagination. Certainly not even in the same zip code as fine Mexican food - nowhere near food truck level either. Del taco makes better beans. Don't waste your time on this place.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
Great food Teresa was awesome !!! What a fun location perfect for a lunch date with your friends
google avatar

Lourdes P.

Yelp
service was great and staff was super friendly. Can't beat their margarita flight. I enjoy coming here for their drinks

Lar¡ssa R.

Yelp
The food was really nice and so was are server! She was very friendly and funny. The vibes are nice as well :) Try it out some time you'll enjoy it!
google avatar

Bernardo G.

Yelp
Visited Joshua Tree and came here for lunch 1pm on a Tuesday it looked slow but at the same time I could sense they seemed understaffed. The staff still was polite and courteous. The food was "ok" basically nothing special but nothing detrimental either. Prices are in line with what I would expect to pay in a Mexican restaurant. See below of what we had. 1-10 scale Green enchilada 8 (the best dish we had) Nachos 7 (I think the picture says it all) Margarita 7 just average Chips and Salsa 4 (very bland)

Cynthia B.

Yelp
We had a great time...the food was delicious, everything came out hot and tasty. Our server was attentive and answered our questions. The salsa was spicy hot but the queso and guacamole were just right for everyone's taste. The portions were large and the menu descriptions were good. We sat by the windows so we had good lighting.

Tonee G.

Yelp
Wow! Waste of money. The server was rude and acted like it was a privilege that we were in there I. His presence. Overpriced everything he could. It's less expensive and better quality if you just make the taco's yourself. Save your $100.00, it smells like a septic tank.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Slow service, very salty food, ambiance is okay. The waitress had good customer service but the food took very long to come out.

S. S.

Yelp
Bland food. Chicken and beef enchiladas with no flavor. The rice too was so awful too. Should have opted for Taco Bell! On the plus they have margaritas. Go for the drinks, skip the food.

John Henry J.

Yelp
The food quality is way below acceptable which is only topped by the unbelievably bad service. It's always been this way. Didn't go back after ten years after having nothing but rotten food and experience until last week when we had family in town and needed a sit down place. I crossed my fingers and hoped maybe they'd cleaned up their act. Nope. Even worse. Avoid at all costs.

Sarah G.

Yelp
Great food & drinks in an old bank building. The restrooms are the old bank vault. Great service too!

Ggwolferson G.

Yelp
The food was really good and Wilber the waiter did a great job with making sure if we needed anything.

Debie M.

Yelp
The customer service was good,Our server. CJ,was amazing...The food and cocktails just made the whole night fabulous..

Kiju L.

Yelp
everything was amazing!! CJ took the time to take care of my specific order to the "T"! I had a child with me with specific preferences with food. the service was spot on and very quick!! I am coming back:) thank you CJ!!!

Lynn K.

Yelp
I dined here for one dinner with my husband and sister-in-law while we were in town. I had beef and chicken fajitas, and was happy the chicken was tender. It had good green peppers and fried onions. I received hardly any beef and the existing beef I did receive was tough. My husband had Chili Verde pork; he liked it although it was spicy hot. My sister-in-law had chicken enchiladas. The chips were very good. My slushy virgin pina colada was hard to drink. Our flan was okay. The service was good and ambiance was nice. I liked having table service and real pottery plates, not paper.

Danielle T.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, friendly staff. Clean inside and out! The food is amazing with a big bar with many drinks to choose from. I'll be back again soon!!!
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
1st time visit to this local favorite and I was not disappointed! Nice ambiance and pretty busy on a Friday night but we were seated within 10 minutes. Started dinner with the typical chios & salsa - only these were WAY better than the typical chips. So light and airy! Had to order my favorite 2 Cheese Enchiladas dinner ($13.95) and it was absolutely delicious! I would go back and plan to go back soon!
