18 Essential Restaurants on the Outer Banks

"Google the highest-rated restaurant on Ocracoke and most lists will have Eduardo’s as number one. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner out of a small red trailer just off the main road, and it draws crowds during the busy summer season. Specialties include the cheesy grilled shrimp mango tacos, the cheesy pork tacos, and the cheesy sirloin tacos (notice a theme?), but it also has breakfast burritos, fresh grilled seafood tacos, and possibly the most popular guacamole on the island." - Matt Lardie

Eduardo’s has always been special to me from its beginning location in Chickasha. It was such a pleasant trip to Duncan to see this family-owned business still have quality service and food! It was worth the trip from Tuttle to see old friends and enjoy some delicious food. We will definitely be back soon!

We were driving through Duncan and decided to give this place a try since it looked like they opened their dining room. The service was very good; our waitress was attentive and quickly delivered anything we ordered. We ordered the white queso, as we usually do, and it was good. The salsa was fresh and very mild. However, we were very disappointed with our entrees and can’t recommend.

I went in with a group of friends, and the service was terrible. When we got our ticket, they automatically put a 20% gratuity fee and a 3.5% convenience fee, and asked for more tips after. My $14 meal came out to $30. Absolutely wild.

Google
This place is awful they roaches in the kitchen and I had it my food! They wouldn't refund my money. They refused to set me up front with people they set me in a corner by self with no people around. The food wasn't done. Terrible place! Won't be back. They should be closed the health department really should be in there.

Google
I don’t understand how this place is still in business. It must be owned by some really great people, who have friends that are return costumers. Our waitress was sweet and very attentive, but the food was absolutely awful. When I’m hungry and at home, I wrap cheese and refried beans in a tortilla and pop it into the microwave. This burrito was worse than that. The fajitas were microwave chicken and a ton of onion. That is it. I’m in the army, and travel often so I’ve been to quite a few of mediocre restaurants before, but this was beyond that. This wasn’t edible.

Google
Best reastaurant in Duncan! We always look forward to coming here! Service is fast and exceptional. The chicken enchiladas, chicken quesadillas, white queso, and sloppy coors light are the best around 👌

Google

Google
Worse place I've ever ate. They treat costumers so rudely and I seen a cockroach on my table. We won't be back.

Yelp
We drive 45 minutes to eat here. The food is amazing! The salsa is my favorite! The staff is like family! Needless to say I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

Yelp
Service - 2/10 Food - 4/10 Ambiance - ? We were greeted at the front but the server was pretty busy, it seemed, with the other tables. I honestly don't remember if there was music playing. The decor in the entry looks like what you might expect when you walk into a Mexican restaurant. Food... both of the people in my party had the chicken enchilada, and the side offerings were mashed potatoes or corn, or both. It was an enormous amount of mashed potatoes, a couple of fistful of corn mixed with veggies and nestled in between was a very skinny chicken enchilada topped with sliced olives. There was a lot of liquid floating on the plate. I'm guessing from the corn. Fortunately for me, I opted for the chicken wrap and gave half of it to one of the people in my party. You have the choice of adding avocado or bacon. Keep in mind. If you get both there's an upcharge. I opted for avocado only and did not expect to see Ranch dressing on it. It says Mexican restaurant, but not like any others I've visited. No return visit for me.

Yelp
no, no, no Absolutely no Service was terrible The tortilla tasted like it was bought cold product plated and served. I do not recommend this restaurant at all

Yelp
This place gets no stars. Horrible service horrible food. My girlfriend got fajitas. The were the blandest set of fajitas I have ever tasted. We got the manger to express how poorly these fajitas were. April the manager got to the table. Then instead of apologizing or asking how to fix it. She said 3 other guys ordered the combo fajitas today. An tore them up. So I know they are good. Poor service sh**y food. Then to top it off. I ordered a chimichanga. It was a burrito basically. With quest on top. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO FRY CHIMICHANGAS!!!! If you want weto Mexican food. Come here for crap I wouldn't even feed my dogs with.

Yelp
I took some Special Needs people here. There were 5 of us in total. Everybody ordered their food, and I had water. I ordered water because I didn't have any money, so they charged me for the complimentary Chips and Salsa. That's when I discovered that they automatically put a Gratuity in your bill, then try to encourage you to tip more without you knowing. Plus the food has never been very good.

Yelp
If you ever come to Duncan...SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DON'T EAT HERE. First time ever visiting this restaurant and I will never be back. The food I ordered was the fajitas: chicken, beef and shrimp. It was bland, no seasoning and all the meat was over cooked. There salsa tasted like tomatoes. Just tomatoes. I requested for another bowl of Queso due to the fact ours was cold. I asked to speak with the manager, her name was APRIL. When I told her the chicken was very dry and there was no seasoning and it is just bland food...HER RESPONSE.... I have had 3 men today order this and loved it. This is Tex-mex and this is just the way it is down here. Not at all what I expected to hear from someone who is a manager and cares about her customers, food and job. She didn't even say, I'm sorry you didn't like it. We would love to try and fix it. It was straight to defense of the food and how this is just my problem. I made sure I tipped my waitress and left. Pretty sure if this is how she was taught to treat ppl, upper management might not care either about their food and customer services. Since there is not a lot in this town... all I can do is write this review.

Yelp
The waitress is the worst I have dealt with. She is hateful and we had to sit and wait 20 minutes for her to even come and take our order. The manager has the same bad attitude. At least the food makes up for the poor service.

Yelp
The food was below average very little taste. The waitress was not very friendly. A person in our party ordered a taco salad and requested it be made with fajita beef instead ground beef without sour cream, onion, or cheese. It first came out with all dairy products so had to be sent back. It came back and she genuinely didn't like it. No offer for discount/ refund/exchange. It was her fault it was bad because she requested it that way. It 12 dollars.

Yelp
We drive from Chickasha to eat here often and it is so worth the drive. The owners are always so nice and the food is always delicious! I love the cheese enchiladas, yellow queso and my daughter begs me to take her there for the grilled chicken and brownie dessert thanks for keeping Ed's alive for us all who love it so much

Marissa B.

Yelp
The food is good. But if you are a young adult, they will charge you gratuity no matter how many people are in your group. I've come with a group of two and will get charged gratuity.

Yelp
NO STARS-Very poor service - waitress was more interested in talking to her friends than waiting on customers. She took our order and that was it-we had to go get our own napkins and straws; she did not check on us once. I had to find another server to get a ticket (the manager showed up and was more rude than the waitress). Food was rather bland-do not recommend this restaurant for the food or the service-BOTH WARE LOUSY!

Yelp
I used to work for this establishment... my coworkers were rude, lots of drama (not all, but most). I've first hand watched the manager argue with customers, as well as employees in the kitchen and not in private. Food isn't to bad just the atmosphere of the place itself. I worked there for about a year and it never changed, manager is sarcastic, and talk about employees amongst others while they are not around. . . Called in, off work, or quitting job 2 weeks notice or not. Granite I did not give 2 weeks but I know people who have and the story is the same.

Yelp
Terrible service. I was seated in a booth where I sat for 5 minutes while the waitress walked around and flirted with a young man at another table. There were maybe 3 other tables of other people so not busy at all. Can't rate their food unfortunately, but I'm guessing it is lacking as well based on my interactions with the staff. Tried to call to speak with a manager after I left and all I heard was the staff giggling on the phone trying to convince each other to be the manager. Yeah, not having that. My time is not a joke. If you can't be respectfully of customers and their choice to spend their money with you then you should not be in business or work in the food industry. I hear burger joints are hiring.

Yelp
This is possibly the worst Mexican food in Oklahoma . The cheese tasted like it came straight from the jar and since our server told us they had to heat up more cheese it made sense. I got the burrito dinner and I couldn't even finish half of it. Simply put this place is horrible. Our server seemed pissed as well although if I had to dish out that garbage on a daily basis I'd probably have her same attitude.

Yelp
THIS RESTAURANT WAS TERRIBLE. The wait for our food was over an hour long and there was nobody else in the building besides our party. There was hair in my food and it was also underdone and had no flavor. They also overcharged for our food and automatically made us pay for a %20 tip and then proceeded to ask for a tip after pay. I do not recommend this restaurant to ANYONE!

Yelp
Eduardo's is still a staple for the area. Travis has taken the brand and improved on it. Service has improved wonderfully. I am still a fan. Get the Gizzard Lip Dip.

Yelp
Consistently great food. Excellent Service. Great drinks! My first choice in Duncan of any place to eat.

Yelp
This restaurant used to be okay. Not very authentic Mexican food, but edible and tasty. The last time I went there I was served spoiled guacamole. I don't know how they stay open when they would serve spoiled food to their patrons.

Yelp
Food was fine once we got it. Management needs some work. We waited a long time for our food. Saw at least one other group come in after and get their food before us. Other smaller tables as well. Instead of handling professionally the manager argues with us about how we were wrong. By his own admission the kitchen got the order to us in 30 minutes from when the order went in. Our previous visit had it out in 15 minutes or less. Restaurant was about half full of patrons so they couldn't have been slammed in the kitchen. Bottom line the complaint could have been handled better.

Yelp
It was Sunday when we visited. Due to the bad reviews we ate here out of pure desperation. I am very glad that we did. We were greeted immediately and seated quick. Out waitress was extremely polite and knowledgeable with the menu. I had the steak tacos and they were awesome! Unique marinade and great seasoning. Very filling and a great quantity of food. My wife got a combo platter with two tacos and an enchilada. My daughter took the enchilada and devoured it. My wife says that it was excellent. The dessert on the shelf looked awesome but we were way to full to try any of it. The restroom was very clean as well. I'm sad that all of these bad reviews happened. If it wasn't the only place open we would have never tried it and we would have missed out on an excellent find. Please try this place. Hopefully your experience is as awesome as ours! Thank you.

Yelp
visited this restaurant with a friend on Friday for lunch. First, we were brought chips/salsa - chip basket was half full with stale chips and salsa was nothing to brag about (did not taste homemade) - we had one chip each and quit. I ordered a Mexican pizza - the tortilla "crust" was soggy and appeared uncooked. I ate the toppings and saw the crust was doughy and pulled it away from toppings. It was nasty. When I complained to waitress, she tried to explain the tortilla gets that way from the heat of the toppings. When I disagreed since I had many Mexican pizzas in the past where this did not happen, she took my plate away. I had left half of it on plate. When she brought the bill, I noted the charge for pizza was still noted, so I asked that she remove it. She said she brought it to manager's attention and was told not to remove it. I asked for the manager who explained since I ate "most' of it I had to pay for it. I did eat much of the toppings since I was starving and explained that to her - her reply was there were only two bites left. Pretty big bites since I left half on my plate. She would not budge which was stupid since she lost two customers. I will NEVER go back there and will spread the word loud and clear, everywhere I can. She should go to Don Jose's to see what her restaurant is lacking.

Yelp
In my opinion they've really improved. The service was excellent and the waiter was very nice. I ordered what I believe I remember being the pulled pork quesadillas(small) and my mom ordered the chicken quesadillas(small). We both enjoyed our food, and it wasn't too filling. I'm glad we had the complementary chips and salsa though because we probably wouldn't have been full without them. The pulled pork quesadillas were amazing and I love them! My mom and I also traded a bite for a bite and the chicken was awesome too. I definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Mexican food, as an old-folks-home cook who'd never been to Mexico would prepare it. I ordered the Fajita Chicken Nachos and a Beef Enchilada. The nachos were simply cheese and chicken - no spices (or excitement) to be found and the beef enchiladas had a bit of ground beef sprinkled inside and were topped with "enchilada sauce", but still managed to taste like... nothing. It wasn't inedible, just bland and disappointing.

Yelp
Good chips and salsa. Foods good and the kids love the atmosphere. I'd rather go here for Mexican food then any of the other places in Duncan.

David J.

Yelp
This is the most under rated Mexican restaurant in Duncan just because it's not full of Mexicans running the joint. The Food is better and fresher and so is the atmosphere

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite restaurants...20 years ago. Since I moved back to Duncan in 2007 the food there has been incredibly disappointing every time I've set foot in there, especially the last time when I found a cockroach cooked into my food. This isn't a story from my uncle's sister's cousin's best friend but from my own plate. I will never eat there again and I don't recommend any on else eat there either.

Yelp
Here's what happened. Took 1 grand-daughter to eat Sunday lunch. I just happen to look over the bill. I noticed it had another 4.50 or so added on. I asked the waitress and she said the manager added it on. Told her I wanted to talk to the manager. Manager stated one of the waitress said the last time we were there, I didn't leave a tip. So the manager requires every bill to add on a tip of those who they THINK did not leave a tip the last time they were there. Sorry, but I always leave a tip. I told them to go get the waitress who said I did not leave a tip a month ago. Manager comes back and said she wasn't sure who it was. So if you eat there - watch your receipt because it seems they automatically add in a tip. Which would be fine if they warned you BEFORE leaving another tip. I did inform the manager that Duncan is not hurting for Mexican restaurants and I won't be back. It all boils down to a waitress saying "they don't leave tips" and add it onto your bill not knowing if they have the right person or not .

Yelp
Ok so everyone knows that while traveling for work I'm on a constant quest for yummy Mexican food, and I've had a few hits and lots of misses. Eduardo's my dear comrades....was a miss. I can't even remember what I had....oh wait the trio of enchiladas, one chicken, one beef, one cheese. My chicken enchilada had about a teaspoon of chicken smack dab in the center...that was it. And I'm not saying they have to chock it full till it explodes but when I spend most of my meal time looking for the chicken...that's saying something. Also the rice and beans were HORRIBLE. It was worse than the mexican rice mixes you buy in the grocery, and I didn't even bother to finish them and we all know I am a rice and beans lover, even if I don't enjoy my enchilada or whatever I always finish at least the rice and beans...I didn't! Also the margaritas were totally week, they were big size just super weak, and I don't know about you guys but I like my daily tequila infused margarita buzz with lunch.

D B.

Yelp
Eduardo's is an old time restaurant in the heart of Duncan. While the name can be confusing, Eds is actually tex-mex. Local favortites enjoy the popular diced chicken breast atop mexi rice with melted cheese. Home made guacomole is a great compliment to the also home made salsa and fried corn tortilla chips. For those with food related health problems, these people are anxious to help provide complete satisfaction. Also, if you're looking for a great margarita, check out the JoeRita.
