Eel River

I’ve hiked the Eel River between Dos Rios and Nashmead multiple times. It’s my hands down favorite place to hike. That said, it is also the most treacherous and remote. Not for the faint of heart, or easily deterred. The wild North Coast is alive and well up here. Bears, old grows, railroad equipment, and loads of beautiful spots to sit and take it all in.

Overall, most of this river is very remote and hard to access. It does however have nice beaches in the summer, but in the winter is very dangerous as it gets much higher. Beautiful summer views especially in the North Fork near Dios Ros.

Should be called Gravel River. Do you like impressive gravel? This is a must see.

I loved it. I went on a 3 day trip to the South Fork of the Eel River last December. We stayed at an Ashram but there are other places to stay. Or camping. This is Bear country. No grisly's but Brown bears Plus many other non aggressive amazing animals - Beavers, River Otters, Eagles and many more. Oh, they - bears - have been seen but no incidents. Don't let this stop you. It is their country after all. A friend on this trip was petrified of them. I felt no danger. You are also close to an old forest filled with giant redwood trees and though I didn't go I think this too makes it one incredible place.

I camped (Hidden Springs Campground, Myers Flat) by the Eel River with my family since I was a small child. The BEST part was hiking (short) down to the Eel River and spending the day there, on our inner tubes, on the rope swing, and walking most of the way across to the sandy beach on the other side. The tiny fish “kissing” our shins and calves are memories I will never forget. Two words, GO THERE!

Beautiful spot to stop and enjoy. Looks like some parts are good for swinging over and jumping in! I'll leave that to the Humbolt locals. Have fun.

My favorite river! It’s clear, cold and remote! If you haven’t spent time on the Eel you’re missing out!
