The 23 Best Restaurants in Amsterdam

"Open for: Brunch, lunch, dinner Price range: $ The best place to go for a croquette in town — in a city where every other restaurant has a croquette — Van Dobben has been at it since 1945. The cafeteria offers a wide array of fried foods and meat products, mostly intended to be eaten on soft white rolls. The veal croquettes are crunchy and classic, but there are more adventurous options, like the broodje tartaar topped with raw hamburger, a boiled egg, and a generous dollop of mayo. The restaurant does have vegetarian options, though the menu definitely centers on meat. Retro vibes and communal mustard spoons add to the charm.  Vibe check: Despite the central location, Van Dobben is popular with locals for lunch. Get a glass of milk with your sandwich if you want to blend in." - Katharine Khamhaengwong

On the Grid : Eetsalon van Dobben

"The Dutch aren’t famous for their food, but one thing is definitely worth trying, the ‘Kroket’. A croquette is made of meat ragout covered in breadcrumbs and then deep fried. You can get croquettes throughout the city, but the best can be found at van Dobben. You'll find no exuberant decoration here because the croquette is all that matters. Order a croquette on a bun with mustard and a glass of milk, like all the inhabitants of Amsterdam do." - Resoluut

#yumthebestever Looking for an Amsterdam version of Katz Deli then head to Eetsalon Van Dobben! An Amsterdam classic, house-made croquettes get all the fame and don’t forget the sausage, raw meat sandwich , roast beef, & 🥛 . Even the hearty pea soup is made in-house.

Google
Old-school Dutch diner classics. Worth the visit. I recommend the kipsalade, pea soup, and the classic croquettes.

This place was so basic but so great at the same time! A member of our group has been to Van Dobben before and promised we would not regret it. Indeed, we loved everything about it: The food was authentic and delicious. The staff was extremely welcoming and seemed to enjoy what they are doing. Thank you!

I recently heard about a friend's terrible experience at this restaurant. Despite the good food, he was genuinely surprised by the dishonest and xenophobic way the staff, two women, treated him, and potentially other tourists as well. These two dishonest women didn't show the prices on the menu when they saw he was a tourist, which is pure dishonesty with a client, especially knowing that there is another menu with prices available. They also added some hidden taxes in it. It's unfortunate to see this kind of thing happen at a place that's supposed to be good, but it happens to be horrible. Just a heads up, be careful if you're thinking of going there and ask for the menu with prices to avoid being overcharged!

An excellently preserved coffee haven offering the finest Dutch snacks. The bustling atmosphere filled with locals is a testament to its greatness.

Google
Very delicious Dutch dishes made with tradition. Bitterballen were very good, crunchy outside layer and stuffing with mixed bread, onion and beef. Taking this one with a little bit of mustard on it tased very well. When it comes with Sandwich with roast beef, milky roll and thiny sliced meat were amazing, roast beef was seasoned for sure for some time, again with a little bit of mustard this composition was tasty. Milky roll was creamy and soft. For sure, you need to visit this local food place for a quick lunch if you want to try Dutch cuisine at least once. Prices are not so high, service is very friendly.

Yelp
This was my favorite meal in Amsterdam! We got the krokettens and roast beef sandwich with peanut butter sauce. Very authentic, tasty, hearty. They have a local diner vibe and have been around for a long time

Yelp
A no frills spot for croquette and other local foods and snacks. Service was quick and there seemed to be a lot of locals there. The croquettes were yummy and worth a try.

Yelp
When in Amsterdam don't forget to eat this iconic dish at this iconic place. This is the place to have a kroket, period! It is a small bar/restaurant perfect for a quick bite! Excellent fresh orange juice as well as the ham sandwich. I was here for a quick bite and ended up eating a bit more than that. They surprisingly accepted American Express!

Yelp
Classic brodje- simple Dutch sandwiches. Fantastic croquettes. Great Dutch pea soup. This place is a must try for some classic Dutch fast food. My favorite is the tartar special - beef, hard boiled eggs and mayonnaise. The Dutch drink a glass of fresh buttermilk to wash it all down, but I haven't gone that far yet. Give it a try, at least for bitterballen (meatballs) and a fresh croquette.

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in for a quick bite here today. She was happy with her Chicken/Avo/bacon sandwich and I enjoyed my Katsu Chicken. Both came with delicious sauces and the breads were tasty as well. I saw the customer behind me get his pastrami sandwich and I REALLY wished I had selected it for my choice. Both our sandwiches were fresh, the service prompt, and our server was friendly, helpful, and kind.

Yelp
The best croquetten in Amsterdam and the Dutch ladies are hilarious to watch and listen to! As they interact with customers and each other. The croquette is delicious when dipped in mustard 5/5. Limited. Seating and expect a line if coming during lunch or the weekends. Do not be discouraged by a line, your taste buds will thank you once you bite into the croquette! Always a must stop when visiting Amsterdam. Authentic and HEEL LEKKER! DANK U WEL VAN DOBBEN!

Yelp
Best soup ever can't wait to come back It showed up as we needed it and such amazing staff

Yelp
We (group of 4) visited this restaurant in the afternoon, as we had a coupon for a free croquette. When we arrived, we were the only customers. The experience was overall decent, but did not meet my expectations of a spectacular bar. The staff greeted us warmly (in English) and were straight to the point. I had several items here, including the croquette. The croquette was not particularly outstanding. This place is for you if you're interested in an authentic Dutch sandwich bar.

Yelp
Hard to give 2/5 especially with the raving reviews but my experience was totally underwhelming. Van Dobben is a classic Dutch sandwich bar in Rembrandt Square, especially lively in the nighttime. Sat in around 10 PM as the only guests. There is only 1 English page in the entire menu. All the favorites are condensed onto the 1 page. Ordered the croquette without bread, roast beef, roast pork with gravy, and the peanut sauce. All were kind of plunked on the counter in front of us when served. Unless you order your meat dipped in gravy, expect cool temperature sandwiches. Croquette (€ 3,15) - better than the sandwiches. Potato-paste in the inside. Tasted OK, not better than the same thing at FEBO. Roast beef (€ 3,45) - worst of all. Really excited for the flavor and texture as its pink in the middle. Tasted stale, unappetizing texture. Bread tasted like average grocery store grade. Really disappointed with this one. Roast pork (€ 3,30) - dipped in gravy so at least the bread was soaked and it had better temperature. Did not get great taste from the pork or the gravy. I want to give Van Dobben a second chance but I really regretted eating here. But hey, at least peanut sauce gets 4/5.

Yelp
If you're going to get anything in Amsterdam come here for the croquette or Kroket as the Dutch call it. Pretty much everyone here spoke Dutch which lead me to believe this was a good local secret. It's like a Dutch diner. Cheap and delicious. The croquette sandwich is definitely Interesting. Cover it in mustard and just go for it. I would say it's a once a trip kind of treat because it's so heavy. It's basically a fried ball of Ragu with meat on white bread. I also had the American sandwich. Which is raw beef creamed with herbs. Not exactly my type or something I would ever eat again. But when in Amsterdam! Be loud and just sit down and order with the ladies behind the counter as they are busy as hell. Bring cash and they don't take credit cards.

Yelp
It's like a tiny New York City diner was in Amsterdam. Little meat sandwiches. Croquettes. White or brown bread. Pretty classic dutchy.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Adam. Food is great and service incredibly friendly. Just perfect after a few rounds of beers or quick snack in the afternoon. Tartar Sandwiches are the best as well the Roast Beef and Kroketen of course. It's an alcohol free place. Soft drinks available as well as several coffee options.

Yelp
I'd give this place a solid 4 stars if I ate meat, but since I am jealous of meat-eaters and lamenting over the limited, yet surprisingly plentiful vegetarian options, I am going to go with 3. That does not mean, however, that I would avoid this place. Quite the contrary, in fact. Van Dobben has this authentic feel to it. I saw grown ups reading the morning newspaper while drinking milk and enjoying their croquet sandwiches. The menu was available in multiple languages, including Japanese. The staff all spoke Dutch and there was this low-tech feeling with paper guest-checks. I throughly enjoyed my vegetable croquet. As recommended by others, I dabbed on a generous helping of house mustard to make it taste even more awesome, and it delivered. Best part - it didn't break the bank. I am glad to have discovered a new lunch spot.

Yelp
We were scoping out eats to fill up our stomachs before imbibing at the bars nearby when we stumbled upon Van Dobben. It was empty but we decided to give it a try and before long we realized we had found a true Dutch gem! There main speciality are sandwiches of just about every kind. From the flavorful meatball to pork doused in gravy, they were all delicious. Depending on how hungry you are, I would go wtih two or more (they are not too expensive either). The waitress even let us sample some of the raw beef which was suprisingly good. It is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite and move on.

Yelp
Meat! Croquets everything delicious! Real Amsterdam taste! Good prices, quality and service

Yelp
Simple concept, delicious meals. Here you will find excellent sandwiches for a reasonable prize. I'm not a big fan of sandwich joints, specially because the chefs just make the sandwiches big instead of tasty. But here it was different, the meat cuts, croquettes and mustard was out of this world.

Kam L.

Yelp
Got a diner aesthetic. Two people manage the counter. I had salmon salad rolls. They're on slightly buttered bread with generous pat of mayo. Quick service.

Yelp
A wonderful institution of Dutch sandwiches, it is the last one in existence. The eel sandwich is great here, as well as the roast beef. The great croquetten from this place are sold to other bars and restaurants. This deli is off the beaten path and NOT TOURISTY!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Feels like this is the Dutch version of "fast food." But it shouldn't be confused with the processed fake stuff we have in the states. Real carved meats. Rare, thinly sliced flavorful roast beef on a soft roll makes this a must-go if you're looking for something quick and inexpensive. The show is in the back with the serving ladies who balance orders, wait counters, make the sandwiches and joke with the locals making the room a joyful place to sit for a couple minutes.

Yelp
5 stars for the dutch atmosphere. In New York i go to Katz deli for the famous pastrami. Here i go to Van Dobben.
google avatar

Ian Y.

Yelp
Rule #1 when looking for an "authentic" place to eat: If the locals eat there, then it's probably worth a try. Well, Van Dobben certainly fit the bill -- the menu is all in Dutch, and you don't see too many tourist wandering in. The clientele was distinctly Dutch-speaking, though the waitresses were certainly willing to talk in English. The food here is pretty good, though just maybe a tad bit on the high side given the portion sizes. Still, it's definitely worth checking out for its unique fare, especially given its close proximity to the Rembrandtplein.
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Delicious croquette and the sandwiches look good too. I'll be back to eat here again if in the neighborhood and am in need of a snack. Friendly staff as well.
google avatar

Kenneth M.

Yelp
A great place to eat traditional Dutch foods. Great pea soup with ham, croquettes and other such delicacies. Well priced and cheery atmosphere.

L R.

Yelp
Nice croquettes! Enjoyed the pea soup as well. I wish I had more of an appetite to try some of the delicious-looking sandwiches that were being prepared. Very hard working and friendly ladies behind the counter.
google avatar

Andreas P.

Yelp
Great place! I love the tasty and quick served food. It can very full during lunch time. Try the Krokette!
google avatar

Dylan R.

Yelp
The food is amazing! I was told to get croquettes while in Amsterdam and this is where I ended up. The croquettes were delicious along with the chicken skewers with peanut sauce. Unfortunately they do not take cards and I was 2€ short to pay for the meal. The ladies that ran the place told me to just come back when I had the money (probably not expecting me to come back at all considering the look on their face when I returned). Between the people and the delicious Dutch food this is a must visit, just wake sure you bring cash with you!

Greg J.

Yelp
I was recommended by a family friend who grew up in Holland. He told me to get the croquet and the american filet. The former was delicious, the latter was also delicious but that may be because at the time I didn't know it was essentially ground, raw steak. In retrospect I still think it was pretty damn good and I would get more if I had the chance. Roast beef was also delicious. The people were very nice, and the place was filled with locals. It also probably helps that it's in an alleyway and so avoids the main tourist traffic. It also reaffirms the notion that Amsterdam is filled with little gems of food places, tucked away from the main streets.

Yelp
We wife and I love this place. We always take out-of town-guests for lunch here. It's simple, fast and great tasting. We still have yet to sort out the ordering. I noticed someone below pointing out they were ignored at the table, I don't think the staff really come out to take orders, we always go up to the counter to order, then return to pay. If something isn't ready to go, they will deliver it to your table. The Croquet Sandwich is always a hit. Better quality and more fresh then FEBO.
google avatar

Jacqueline H.

Yelp
If you are looking for a quick sandwich in a great atmosphere, you have to stop at this Van Dobben location. Every table has a big glass of mustard on it, which is a perfect topping for your sandwich. The service is typical, but the ambiance is fantastic. It's like a vintage diner where business people might come for a bite. The person behind the counter will have no trouble remembering which table you're from when you come up to the register to pay and they'll bring out your food with very little fanfare. It's a simple, but solid choice for a snack. The croquet sandwich is definitely what this place is known for and is very, very good, but the thing that keeps me coming back and dreaming of Van Dobben, however, is their roast beef. It is so perfectly cooked and served. If you add some old gouda to it, this will be over the top. Sometimes your sandwich will come as you'd expect with the cheese on top of the roast beef, but has also appeared for me a number of times as one side of an open-faced sandwich being gouda and the other half being roast beef (love the Dutch and their strict interpretations of what goes on a sandwich, I really do). The bread is so perfectly squishy with a little bit of butter smeared on before the roast beef and cheese are added. You might want to have some bitterballen (small version of the croquet) with some of the table mustard or a half liverwurst, half salty beef sandwich (these are some favourites around the Netherlands), but I am haunted by the roast beef and old gouda brodje from here still. Don't miss it.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Although the food did look good, regrettably I never had the chance to taste it. After waiting at a table for probably 15 minutes for acknowledgement and another 10 asking to see the menu (which some patrons were given) and being completely ignored by the waitress, I decided to leave and try my luck elsewhere. If I wasn't going to receive good service prior to ordering then I would hate to see how the service was during the meal. It wasn't only myself either, looking around I saw loads of groups trying to flag down the waitress. You shouldn't have to work so hard to get decent service, even at a quick service place like this. I recommend anyone else experiencing this to go to Febo, which is one street north. They may not have the seating but you will get better service and the croquettes are still amazing.
google avatar

Donovan G.

Yelp
This is a simple, inexpensive Dutch style deli/diner. The filet Americain is delicious. Order it with a glass of whole milk. The croquets are also good if you like Dutch style croquettes, which I do.
google avatar

Kristel A.

Yelp
This was a recommendation from the owner of the houseboat we rented for a few days. Frankly delicious! A little overwhelming when you first walk in. Place is packed, you need to figure out where to sit and what to order. We wanted to try the kroketten. Staff is quite busy and not always ready to help you out, but I find that it added some character to this old school eatery. Definitely more of a grab and go type of place. But worth the try for sure. Delicious!!

Yelp
Definitely one of the more interesting places I visited in Amsterdam.

Yelp
love the food and people. one of the best good quality fast food in amsterdam! the best of rembrandtpien! my favorites are the yummy croquets and warm pea soup during winter only. real dutch stuff.

Frode J.

Yelp
Came here for a late breakfast. Service was friendly and fast, and they have a large and interesting selection of filled bread rolls. Good place if you're in need of something quick and easy.
