"After more than 30 years of serving breakfast classics on Lyndale Avenue, the Egg and I closed without fanfare amidst the Coronavirus pandemic. Like so many other restaurants, the eatery shut down when governor Tim Walz ordered all restaurants to close on March 17. According to City Pages, the Egg’s owner Eric Grotbeck, whose mom first opened the restaurant, made the call to sell the property. However, the second location, in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood still plans to reopen when it can." - Joy Summers

Our foodie group came for breakfast here and we all really enjoyed the food and atmosphere! The French toast was amazing and also the fried egg sandwich (on the lunch menu). Stop by if you haven’t already!

We're from out of town and found this by accident after a quick search for something nearby. Wonderful decision!! Our eggs were cooked perfectly and the blueberry pancakes were beyond amazing.

Google
this was my first time coming here w some friends and i think we will for sure be coming back. my friend described the prices as she felt that we were robbing them— that’s how cost efficient we felt the food was. my bill for the pancake and french toast on the first 3 plates came out to be about $8. hers for the eggs, hashbrown, and kamikaze pancake came out to $16. our brunch was delicious: my pancake and french toast had the perfect balance of sweetness and the hashbrowns were amazing. we also realized that the restaurant also hosts a christmas market at this time of year, and so it was fun to stroll around and take a look at all the items up for display. because of this though, you will get other diners walking by your table to take closer looks at items.

Google
Very unique place. Pricier than most typical breakfast places but worth the visit. Service was quick, server was attentive, refills were on time and my order was on point. Ordered a eggs Benedict for $16. The English muffin was perfectly toasted, the slice of Canadian bacon was thick and perfectly salty; The egg was nicely soft poached and runny; the hollandaise was seasoned well and not overly salty and creamy; topped with a perfect pinch of paprika! The hashbrowns could have been more crispy but the flavor was great. One of the better places for eggs Benedict vs your typical Perkins or Denny's-but location is key!

Google
The food was delicious! My husband had the EVERYTHING OMELETTE (with a side salad) and I had a DENVER OMELETTE () and a pancake. Our server was friendly and efficient. The prices are very good and fair: daily omelette special for under $10, a pancake for under $4, they give a credit on the bill if you skip the toast and they have reasonable upgrade charges.

We've been here a number of times for brunch after church. Great options on the menu. The parking lot closest to the restaurant is small, but there's a larger lot to the side of the building. The bathrooms in the restaurant are often busy, but the ones in the building down the hall are quite nice. We were able to wait at a nice coffee table and chairs in the building while waiting for it table. The high chair actually kept our 1 year old escape artist contained.

Google
I love coming here their breakfast menu has a lot of variety and lunch menu is so good too! Their Vanilla chai tea latte also one of the best I’ve ever had! Family friendly and great service over all. 🙂

Yelp
We came here on our religious holiday which means breakfast places throughout the Twin Cities tend to get very busy. The Egg and I is located in an office building near the U of M. Thankfully, the Egg and I was not outrageously busy and for a party of nine we were seated pretty quickly. It was standard breakfast food and lunch options too. Food was decent especially if you're hungry. Prices are good, portions are large, and staff were friendly. The place is a bit dated but I kind of like it since it reminds me of dinners from the 80s and 90s. I'd go again if in the area.

Yelp
I ordered the huevos rancheros, and was served a plate of scrambled eggs with a bunch of raw vegetables and lukewarm beans. I hate sending food back, but this was almost insulting how unappetizing this plate of food was. I tried hard to eat it, but couldn't. I knew that this was going to be the classic basic American diner so I went in with realistic expectations, but the huevos rancheros were unacceptably bad. To their credit, the waitress took the plate back and let me place a different order. I got the buckwheat pancake which was pretty good actually.

Yelp
We came here to fill some time and have breakfast. The server knows that we have somewhat stick timeline and was able to accommodate us to order "Togo" and then seated us so we can have our breakfast. It's a standard breakfast diner and has variety of eggs, breakfast sandwiches and pancakes dishes. We ordered breakfast sandwiches as they were recommended, also was one of a "faster" entry. The food was pretty good, tasty. Nothing too unique and everything is as expected. I felt I might come back here again when I have time to fill for breakfast in this area.

Rachael S.

Yelp
Standard, reasonably priced diner in St. Paul. Went during the Holidays and it was very busy. Great service and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Really nothing fancy, simple decor and tables, but nothing bad to say either. I ordered an omelet which was solid and came with a few pieces of buttered toast. I'm sure The Egg & I has a lot of regulars. I wouldn't necessarily say it is a must stop if you are in the area, but if you need a good breakfast fix and a menu that has plenty of options, it will serve you well!

Nicole C.

Yelp
The BEST French Toast! Rest of our breakfast was delicious as well. Service was great and we were able to get seated very quickly on a Sunday morning. Place was packed! Ambiance isn't anything special but who cares because they make the most awesome French toast!!! Pancakes were tasty as well and the scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly. Forgot to order my bacon crispy - my only regret of this meal. Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast spot. Yes, they have lunch too, which is great. Yet, it's difficult to come here and not get the fantastic breakfast sausage links, too. This visit was Pancake Sunday. Without having talked about it prior, we both were craving pancakes. He got blueberry and I got Kamikaze. I typically order this pancake when I have them here. Side of sausage links and decaf coffee rounded out the meal. The pancakes are gigantic, and I ate half, along with one sausage link. I drank several cups of coffee, which is not my custom. I don't feel overly fond of the coffee, as it tastes scorched to me. I guess I was in the need for decaffeinated liquid. We had been seated quickly and the waitress came over shortly after, which was too fast for us. We then waited a bit for her to return to take our orders. We then waited a while for the food. The restaurant was packed, so we weren't too bothered by it. The pancakes came out without the sausage, and it was explained that she was waiting for it from the kitchen. The pancakes weren't the hottest, though they did have enough warmth to still melt the butter. I had asked for the kamikaze toppings on the side, and they came that way. I hate having to try to move them off the pancake in order to spread the butter. We both left with half a pancake (my toppings) and remaining sausages. That pancake is just too big to eat in one sitting, and I get to have a delicious Day Two breakfast, so I will not complain. We are glad to see this place thriving, as it is certainly a gem of a restaurant.

Yelp
Good Diner Food served promptly and in good quantity in an office building. Fast, reliable, filling and unpretentious.

Cara H.

Yelp
Awesome service and great food! Everyone worked well together. I saw that everyone loved their job!

Matthew D.

Yelp
Pretty good breakfast place. It gets super busy on weekends of course but the wait is bearable. The service was great and the food was wonderful. I had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. I feel that in our economy we are paying more for food and I would say that for the price you get a pretty good breakfast. It was super busy when we came to the restaurant. The ambiance was not that great. Sitting on the outside of the booth meant that my elbow hit every one walking by if I was not paying attention.

Sheri S.

Yelp
I have passed by this restaurant for years and always wondered about it. Personally, I wondered when the opportunity would present itself for me to dine here since it's convenient to get to but not in a popular location. I felt like the restaurant was pretty old school. I ordered the TWO EGGS WITH AMERICAN cheese scrambled with HASHBROWNS and Cornbeef hash. Plus, a vanilla latte. I actually was surprised at the my bill total. I guess breakfast food can become pricey. Although I was pleased overall, I did feel like the toast had a fishy after taste. I am not sure what caused this but guessing something got mixed into the butter that was spread on the bread or maybe the surface the bread was toasted on may have had some old residue.

Yelp
Third time eating here in about five year; I'm from Out of town. Great breakfast place and serves all kind of clientele so you know it's good. The menu looks Like regular fair, be everything from the coffee to the French toast is just a little bit better, IMHO. Hardworking efficient and friendly staff. Coffee and waters were filled regularly. We had burger, French toast, pancakes, and a few thing. All seems to have just a little extra touch. My oatmeal camE with the extra fixing I had orders but they didn't skimp. Everything here was good with my family. So I'd like to Come back when I'm in town next.

Yelp
A favorite place for breakfast or brunch! Many choices but best of all sourdough pancakes! Yes with blueberries and pecans! A reason alone to come here!!!

Steve G.

Yelp
A perennial favorite with reliable food choices mixed with creative options. A comfortable brunch atmosphere with kind and attentive servers.

Mr. Dr. Evil P.

Yelp
Consistently good breakfast the kamikaze, pancakes are really good and so are their omelettes.

Yelp
I lived in Minneapolis for about four years and every time I go back to visit friends and family, I usually find a way to make it back to The Egg & I. If you're looking for a fancy brunch place with bottomless mimosas, this place is not for you. If you're looking for a place to get a great diner-type of breakfast, then you've found what you're looking for! The menu - as the restaurant name suggests - is heavily geared towards egg dishes, but it also includes something for those who love breakfast on the sweeter side - pancakes, waffles, French toast, and their famous kamikaze cakes. I've ordered a bunch of different things off the menu (both savory and sweet) and have enjoyed each and every entrée. Most recently I had the French toast, which is two HUGE slices of challah bread, grilled to perfection, served with a side of bacon and two eggs. The coffee here is also great (and very strong!) - and I was pleasantly surprised by how frequently our waiter came around to top us off on both water and coffee. Definitely excellent service! You can't go wrong with The Egg & I!

Yelp
I order lunch from Egg & I occasionally. California Burger and hash browns instead of fries. The California Burger has so many veggies on it that it's like getting a hamburger side salad. They do not skimp. I get the hash browns because this place is known for their Breakfasts and their hash browns are the best. It's like a breakfast/ lunch salad burger. So good. Tons of food and super Fast. I order leave immediately and it's always ready when I get there.

Gladams2007 ..

Yelp
Fantastic brunch spot! A local friend recommended this restaurant, and I am happy to do the same. Keep an eye out--not easy location to spot! Fully satisfied.

Lydia H.

Yelp
BREAKFAST FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. It's always good, but at some places it's gooder. This is one of those places. It comes off as a diner-y spot, which oftentimes means the food is sub-par and the coffee tastes like grubby dirt water. However, you get the best of both worlds at Egg and I with the diner vibez AND the tasty food. Their Kamikaze Pancakes were the creme de la creme *chef's kiss.* Crunchy, nutty, blueberry-stuffed, flawlessly topped off with banana deliciousness. Now, for some honesty. We ordered their eggs Benedict because ~hello~ the place is called Egg & I and frankly I thought it would be tragic not to order eggs here. Buuuuut, meh. Their hollandaise was okay, but not the best. Sort of watery. The eggs were poached perfectly, though, so I'll give 'em that! I think a trip here is worth it for the pancakes alone :) AND the coffee is fantastic! Holy cats. Wasn't expecting that. Definitely recommend!

Eliana S.

Yelp
Such a cute diner! Super old school vibes and pretty good breakfast. If you're looking for something fancy this might not be your spot though.

Pa V.

Yelp
My partner and I discovered this place on accident and we're glad we did! Like many of the other reviews said, this classic American diner is located into an office building with plenty of parking and classic selections. Overall the food is mediocre and nothing out of the ordinary. The service is also okay. We would come back. I wouldn't recommend getting the coffee as it was watery and they do close at 2pm everyday. I would recommend the pancakes for sure!

D K.

Yelp
Went for breakfast and ordered the oatmeal, definitely filled me up with all the extras. The service was kind and efficient!

Bob A.

Yelp
I came in here because I had a hankering for Eggs Benedict. That's significant, because I thought I hated Eggs Benedict. Something was telling me that if I got some good Eggs Benedict, I'd like Eggs Benedict. And now I like Eggs Benedict. The Egg & I is located in an ostensibly bland office building in a neighborhood that consists of nothing but bland office buildings as far as the eye can see. (Although, actually the interior of this particular office building is very nice.) It's a spacious, yet bustling brunch place which makes little effort to lure you in with its interior design choices. However, they have a respectable menu of breakfast and lunch entrees, some a bit under ten bucks and some a bit over. My Eggs Benedict portions were generous, and really kind of high quality. They came with a side of very nice hash browns. Service wasn't especially fast or friendly, but certainly nothing to complain about. I feel like the quality of the food does most of the work of keeping customers happy. And that's the most important thing, right? I'll definitely be back. I bet their omelettes are good.

Christina Z.

Yelp
food was nice, service was wonderful. i like the coffee, cos i was so jet lagged so i had few cups of coffee. it is close to where i stay so will come back again and recommend to everyone. oh forgot to mention, the hash browns were delicious

Kamrin D.

Yelp
The Egg and I is basically a diner with a focus on eggs, however I think the real spotlight belongs to the pancakes. It's located on the first floor of an office building and there is a decent size parking lot. I've never had a long wait and I've been seated immediately, even on Saturday/Sunday morning. The menu definitely has a diner feel with lots of options for breakfast and every combination you can think of for eggs, proteins, and potatoes. Food is really good, and my eggs are always cooked perfectly like requested. I suggest getting a buttermilk pancake on the side because this is one of my favorite things at egg and I. It is so fluffy and sweet you will want to eat the whole thing yourself. Also make sure you get the hash browns!! They have some of the best hash browns here and you don't want to miss out. Service is fast, prices are decent, and portions are big. It's definitely a go-to breakfast place for me because of the simplicity and fast service.

Malik E.

Yelp
Mexican omelette....not that good, pretty bland and honestly would not bring my family here ever again. One of the waitresses had an airpod in. Really? Wearing crop tops? Unsanitary if you ask me. There was also a HAIR in the hash browns, you can't make this up. On the first of the new year too? WOW. Pancakes were the only palatable item on the menu. 2/10 would not recommend.

Doug B.

Yelp
Wonderful place to go if you enjoy being judged by the after church crowd on a Sunday afternoon. The customers make up a majority of boomer minion meme mom's. The dress code is shapeless elastic pants with the most vivid garish blazer you dig out of the Kohl's clearance rack. The food was pretty and the price was a BARGAIN FIND.

Barry M.

Yelp
Great find. It's a great find since it always finding a simple breakfast place in Minneapolis is sometimes hard to do. Big menu with friendly wait staff. I think it's family owned and clearly lots of locals cause they all seemed to know each other. They have a lunch menu but this was a breakfast stop for us.

Youa T.

Yelp
After a long 17 hour flight and being super jetlagged, all we wanted was breakfast. I don't know what was wrong with the lady who sat us down but she didnt say one word to us or even show a smile. Having her "I hate this place" stare be our first point of contact was not very welcoming at all. Thankfully our server was much more welcoming and lovely to converse with. The food here was mediocre. No wow factor but its very convenient. I had the eggs benedict with hasbrowns and the boyfriend had the everything omelette. Both were decent. I'd come back to try other things.

Dorothy H.

Yelp
This is becoming one of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots. The service is always awesome and the food is cooked perfectly! I haven't gotten something I haven't enjoyed - my favorite is the two eggs with two French toast. The restaurant itself is very simple, but there is a ton of seating and I've never waited longer than 5 minutes for a table. No complaints about this place!

Trevor D.

Yelp
A true staple of the community!!! I have been eating with them for over 10 years and keep going back for that classic breakfast experience. If you haven't been you definitely need to treat yourself!

Sami G.

Yelp
Been here many times and it's always just fine. Nothing spectacular and nothing terrible just steady cafe food. Today the skillet breakfast was decent although the over easy eggs were not cooked well enough. Others in the party had the veggie omelet which was good and the special of the French dip. Always super friendly staff and clean.

Sue S.

Yelp
The Egg & I serves a pretty solid breakfast. Tucked away in an office center, it's actually kind of hidden. And it's big. Net result: we went at noon on a Sunday and didn't have to wait more than about a minute for a table. Bonus star just for accessibility. I ordered the Eggs Commodore, which is basically an Eggs Benedict with sausage patties replacing the Canadian bacon. It was pretty tasty. The sausage patties were flavorful but not spicy or too fatty. The egg was poached beautifully. The English muffin was perfect (that's usually the downfall of most Benedicts for me) and the Hollandaise was nice -- soft and creamy, though perhaps not as lemony as I would have personally liked. Still very super solid. And I enjoyed that it came just about drowning in Hollandaise. I hate places that skimp on the sauce. Came with a side of hashbrowns, which were kind of average. Fine but nothing extraordinary. My husband shared his wheat toast, which was delicious. And we also ordered a kamikaze pancake just to try one -- it's humongous -- plate sized for real. And it comes with nuts, blueberries and sliced bananas. I'm not really sure the upcharge for the kamikaze was worth it, but it was mighty tasty. He got the corned beef hash, which was decent. He also got American fries, which are NOT french fries. They are hashbrowns that are the kind where there are little slices of potato that are grilled -- homefries, really. Just know before you order. I saw an omelette float by and it looked really good as well. Very good coffee plentiful and refilled fast. I also dug the glass coffee mugs. Service was good -- not extraordinary but certainly on point. Seemed very family friendly and efficient.

Nancy M.

Yelp
Comfort food comes in all forms. My nirvana is the American fries at the Egg and I. They are a cross between hash browns and rustic potatoes cooked until they are brown and crispy. Come here if you are hungry and are not looking for pretense. Pancakes, omelettes, eggs, sandwiches and skillet breakfasts abound. You can't go wrong with any of them. They are very fast too if you're in a hurry. Located in an office building near 280 and I-94.

Bar C.

Yelp
I just had a great omelette with bacon, cheese and hash browns. The only reason for 4 stars is, it was soooo eggspensive (bad pun). Over $16.00, with no coffee!! The hash browns alone were $4.50. I don't know of too many places that don't offer hash browns with the breakfasts. The food was really good though.

David C.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast/brunch spot near the university of Minnesota. The food is quality, the service is consistently good, and the prices are reasonable. The cooks serve generous portions, so I never leave hungry. They always come around and top off the coffee at no extra charge. This location has a lot of seating and ample parking, which is nice so if you are commuting, you will never have to pay for street parking. My personal favorite are the multi-grain banana pancakes and eggs! Besides that, they have a large menu with a lot of great options. A lot of my friends like to get the egg Benedict's - they have various options. All in all this is a great place to go with friends or family. One of the best breakfast diners I know of!

Leslie T.

Yelp
Came here today and ordered the French toast and eggs. The food was ok but the service wasn't the best. The waitress brought out the wrong eggs, charged us for a soda we didn't order, and didn't check on us after our food was delivered. Not a huge deal though- we were able to flag someone else down to help us. We were seated right away and the food came out shortly after we ordered. Prices were also reasonable. Very simple breakfast joint, would come here again.

Jay B.

Yelp
I was going to give this place a higher review but the service has been nonexistent, to say the least. The food wasn't bad at all, but my plate is empty and no one has bothered to pick it up. No one even asked me if my food was ok.

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Always a fabulous meal and experience! Building/restaurant may be hard to find, but it is a gem in the office space. Mexican omelet with wheat bread is delicious. You can go wrong with other items too...many great breakfast options. Service is quick and always keeps the coffee cup full! One of my favorite place for a great breakfast out! Definitely give it a try if you haven't been there yet.

Immaculate I.

Yelp
Saturday brunch at Egg & I with a good friend. She's vegetarian. We were seated promptly and the host stood by while we decided on what to drink. Waitress was honest about what was good and what she liked. I got the Mexican omelet and my friend got the veggie omelette. Both were mediocre at best. They were large portions so I'll have to go back for their cakes.

Paul J.

Yelp
Tasty. Had lunch there. It's in a larger, modern looking office building but definitely has a bit of mom's cooking taste. Wound up getting a decent burger although I have friends who swear on their breakfasts. Would go again.

Michael K.

Yelp
The menu is very decent and the coffee, for restaurant coffee is excellent. Usually always hot. Service: generally, the service is reasonably decent. Occasionally, I have waited to to give my order or to have my food delivered, to notice my server sitting down talking to another person. Usually, servers are very accommodating. Food quality: the food quality is very inconsistent. I have been visiting this location about two times per week for the last six weeks. More often than not, my food temperature is not hot. It may be food safe, but not hot. Today, my skillet number three was minimally warm and the potatoes were nearly so soft I thought they substituted the American fries with mashed potatoes. I needed to send my toast back and did not want to send my food back also. We ordered one kamikaze buttermilk pancake. Literally, it came with blueberries and one slice of banana. Not the kamikaze pancake I recall. I had stopped coming to this establishment because of the inconsistency of the quality of food and service. I wanted to give it another try and did. I have decided I will not try again. I'm done. I am genuinely disappointed because I actually appreciate the atmosphere and location. I can no longer recommend this eatery. We have wonderful choices within the Twin Cities to enjoy and get our moneys worth for a decent product.

Joshua N.

Yelp
This place was legit! We had a group of twelve and they were able to seat us after we called ahead on a Saturday morning. The portions were large and definitely worth the money. The kids loved the kids menu items and the build your own omelet had so many options I had to over do it!

Amintha R.

Yelp
This is a standard breakfast place. I can't say another me or others in the group had very more than expected. It was definitely worth the time and money. Not gonna blow your socks off but if you are looking for good standard breakfast this is definitely going to fill that need.

Rita C.

Yelp
The Egg and I offers an extensive breakfast menu, fast service, and is so big that they always seem to have tables available, even on weekend late mornings. I ordered an omelette with turkey, feta, green onion and mushrooms today. Was impressed that the turkey was actual pieces of roast turkey, not lunchmeat slices. Really quite tasty. They are good at keeping the coffee cup full, too.

Nick M.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast spot in the Cities. You don't come here for the beauty and artistic merit of the place, you come for the food and great service. Yes it's in an office building or whatever, but there's plenty of parking 'round back in the massive lot, so you don't even have to mess with University Ave. Plus it's a huge place, so chances are you'll get a comfy booth; unless you go during their peak-time crush, there's no waiting for a table and certainly no scrum to fight through, like at Keys. The service here is spot-on. They ask you what you want to drink when you're seated, so they're already on top of that by the time you open the menu. Then your server will be over shortly. I've been going here for years and I've only had spotty service a few times. Usually it is more than good. They are also very efficient with refills. Ah, the food. The eggs are large and cooked well every time. The hash browns are a delicious mix of crispy and soft in the middle, and the toast is a great raft of wheat goodness, albeit sometimes a little dry. You can always get something other than the wheat toast; I guess they're just trying to give you some healthier bread by default. They definitely give you large portions too, so beware not to order too much. The skillets are a TON of food. I used to get the American skillet often, which has ham, American fries and cheese, plus eggs, tomatoes, etc. After a time I could no longer handle that much food. Now I just mix it up with the traditional breakfast with ham or bacon, or other options. The corned beef hash is especially good and has become my favorite because they do it up right. My girlfriend gets the huevos rancheros a lot, which is a colorful mix of veggies, black beans, and eggs. Their french toast and pancakes are also above average. I would recommend this place to anyone for breakfast. I haven't even strayed from the breakfast menu to try the lunch sandwiches because the breakfast is that solid. Whenever I think of breakfast done right, the Egg and I is the place.

Michele H.

Yelp
What made our whole visit was our waitress! ANDREA was THE BEST. Young woman who was relatable, funny, and great with kids. I went for breakfast with my sister and we ended up chatting with Andrea and it was like adding an older sister to our table. The food wasn't half bad either. Coffee was just fine and I have no complaints about the veggie omelet and toast I had. Go Andrea!

Kathleen K.

Yelp
I LOVE THE EGG AND I!!! seriously one of the best local restaurants in the twin cities. The food is delicious and the service is fast and so so so friendly. It's a great lunch spot when you are working and worth the wait during the weekend breakfast rush.

October L.

Yelp
Meh. Their breakfast is like any other diner food. I had the breakfast burrito and my boyfriend had the eggs benny. The waitstaff was prompt and courteous but the food and atmosphere were nothing special.

Tom B.

Yelp
Fast reliable service and food you can count on. Thank you Laura.

Alexandra R.

Yelp
Service was good, but the food is incredibly lackluster. I'm not a great chef, but I could have done much better just making the food at home and saved myself the $35 I spent on a meal for two. My boyfriend generally likes simpler food (Perkins is one of his favorite restaurants) and he agreed that this place was awful.
