The Saddest New Orleans Restaurant, Bar, and Music Venue Closures of 2023 | Eater New Orleans

"I saw Metairie’s Egg Roll House as a beloved Chinese takeout favorite for nearly 40 years; it closed for good in June 2023 after owner Theresa Chien explained that a promised rent increase was unsustainable, and the (now-demolished) space will be where Thai restaurant Café Equator expands." - Clair Lorell

You have to try an egg roll at a place called the egg roll house. Piping hot, plump, but mostly cabbage as noted by other diners. Shanghai noodles one of their specialties; you pick the spice level. Medium was lip burning. Some of the included meats were dry. Had leftovers for 2 more days. My companion had chicken chop suey. Taste OK, lots of celery left on the plate. Egg foo Yung comes with 3 patties and a thick brown sauce. Other than my party, no other diners there always a bit wierd. Lots of carryout. Service friendly and appreciative. It's a typical American style Chinese restaurant with an appeal to traditional diners.

The Egg Roll House — A Strip Mall Surprise That Serves Up Nostalgia and Knockout Flavor Nestled in a modest strip mall, The Egg Roll House is the kind of hidden gem that surprises you in the best way possible. I walked in with tempered expectations and left with a taste memory that reached decades into the past. From the moment I arrived, Wendy made me feel welcome, asking where I'd like to sit before handing me the menu. She casually asked what kind of egg rolls I wanted—because they’re made fresh on the spot. I couldn’t decide, so I tried both shrimp and chicken. Absolute perfection. Crispy, flavorful, and paired with a sweet and sour sauce that struck a flawless balance. The hot mustard? Old-school, sinus-clearing goodness—the kind of fiery kick that's hard to find these days. Then came the sweet and sour pork—and with it, a blast from my childhood. I've spent years searching for the version I had as a kid at a tiny restaurant in Waukegan, Illinois. Nothing ever came close... until this. Crunchy on the outside, tender and savory on the inside, this pork dish brought me right back to that cherished flavor. While I did miss the classic pineapple, tomato, and onion medley, the dish was still unforgettable. If you’re anywhere near West Allis, do yourself a favor—seek out The Egg Roll House. Eat, savor, and tell Wendy that Julie says hi. You won't regret it.

We used to go here for the lunch buffet many years ago, and I was excited to add them to our dinner list. That excitement faded when we arrived. The restaurant is less than half the size it used to be, with an entrance that leaves much to be desired, and the buffet...gone. The decor used to be traditional Asian symbols and art in warm colors, but is now cold and sterile. Very disappointing change. Our server was great. She was VERY friendly and eager to help. Our table of six was the only one the entire time we were there so service was fast. The food has really taken a down turn. I ordered a BBQ Pork Egg Roll, and a couple others ordered the combo platter. There was nothing BBQ about the egg roll and the others said all the egg rolls they received were the same. Though I like the way they serve the rice and entre separate so you can build it yourself on your plate, the Sweet and Sour Chicken was not sweet. It was actually spicy. This was definitely a disappointment.

Google
Never have I ever been here before, ok . Friend told me about this place so I went online and picked out the usual for me and was told 15 minutes. Walked into a small but authentic restaurant that gave me the same vibes again that I had at 10 . Smell was amazing and the staff reminded me of my Nana. Price very reasonable, amount was great , egg roll was 10 outa 10 but the surprise was the sweet & sour chicken! OMG !!!! The breading on the chicken was amazing, the chunks of chicken were amazing the amount was amazing but the sweet & sour sauce is the star ⭐️ can’t explain it but I wanted more of it …… it was that good. To die for !!! The staff is amazing also 💙. Highly suggest you go if you like the old fashioned type of Asian American style foods. Enjoy

Google
Like two years ago I asked Wendy what her favorite thing was and she said without missing a beat "salt and pepper chicken". I've gotten it every time since and it's always delicious. Give Egg Roll House a try, give the salt and pepper chicken a try, and ask the folks there what they recommend. Everyone there is so sweet, I love this place.

Google
Egg Roll House has been in business for a really long time and I used to go there a lot in their old location. I really hesitated to share this poor of a review because I’m sure they work hard but when I found the luncheon plate of the orange chicken nearly inedible I thought I should share with others. I should have known when it was served up within 4-5 minutes of ordering that it wouldn’t be that great. The quality reminded me of Panda Express tbh. The pricing was under $10.

Google
The food is delicious! Clean modern decor and friendly waitstaff. (Somebody should delete all the old photos and videos on this listing because the restaurant was completely rebuilt and remodeled recently.)

Google
Got the chicken Almond Ding and my family ordered the Hunan Chicken, fried rice, crab rangoon and egg rolls. Everything was excellent, hot and fresh. Place is remodeled and super clean. Would recommend visiting this little gem.

Yelp
The service has always been friendly. I have only been here for take out but they have plenty of seating. I like to get the sweet and sour chicken with sauce on the side otherwise the chicken gets soggy. Egg rolls are large!!

Yelp
Food is excellent and good size portions. I haven't had a bad tasting meal here. It's my go to when I want Asian food

Yelp
Ok so I'm from Chicago and I was skeptical of spending $21 for lunch at a place I'm not familiar with. I was pleasantly surprised it was the best I've ever had. I'm an elite Yelp writer and I very hardly give 5 stars. The Egg Roll House deserves my rating. I just told my wife she has to try this dish. It is her absolute favorite. Oh, I'm talking about their Shrimp Egg fuyoung! Awesome!!!!! I'll be back ma'am definitely. Service was exceptional and the owner I believe was very nice.

Yelp
Our families favorite Chinese restaurant! The buffet is fabulous! Ordering a favorite is also perfect! When I taught in West Allis, the Egg Roll House was a quick trip to pick up lunch to go! My favorite meal was Christmas 2024. My whole family picked their favorite from the menu. I picked up the to go order. The next day, we all warmed up our favorites and had an absolutely wonderful Christmas Dinner!! We all even had leftovers to take home! One of my favorite memories of a fun Christmas Day with family!!!!

Yelp
Finally made it in--glad to have checked it out. The space itself is sparse/minimalist but that's okay- no issues with that. We started with potstickers- the dough is a little on the thicker side but cooked to perfection. The pork filling was delicious. Our entrees came out a different times and I asked for a shrimp egg roll which took extra time but I think it's a one man show in the kitchen so we were okay with that. I had the Orange Chicken lunch special which came with fried rice and an egg roll. Perfect portion size for lunch. The sauce on the chicken was quite mild so if you like it with a little kick- you just need to ask for it. Loved the rice. No carrots or peas--hooray! Carrots and peas do not belong in fried rice and we we thrilled to not find them here. My husband had the Steak & Broccoli which was good. He cleaned his plate.

Yelp
Rather disappointed with the rather limited menu selection Did a late night carry out and it only 15-20 minutes on a rather busy night The one entrée that I did order was okay enough that I'd order it again (curry chicken). Would I go out of my way to revisit this establishment is probably not

M K.

Yelp
Do not eat at this restaurant. Chicken bones in food. Very dirty. No reason why chicken bones are in the fried rice and teriyaki chicken. Please dont waste your cash eating at the Egg Roll House. I have no idea how this restaurant stays open with low food control.
google avatar

Emily H.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese food in the city. Highly recommend eating in person. Although the ambience is nothing special, it just hits differently when it's fresh to the table versus via delivery. For example when I order the egg foo young it comes out slightly crispy which makes it my fave all around. Same for the egg rolls.

Paula P.

Yelp
Called for takeout their prices online was wrong but food was very good.you can eat in or whatever cocktails are available.

Lori S.

Yelp
This place has been around for forever and you can always depend on good food. Service is fast sometimes too fast
google avatar

Julie H.

Yelp
We received a very warm welcome, and very friendly service. The food was served hot and was fresh and delicious. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Anne H.

Yelp
Very fresh egg rolls and I judge most by their shrimp. If it is fresh or fishy trading and their shrimp fried rice and shrimp egg rolls were delicious and no fishy smell or taste

Habib K.

Yelp
Do not eat here! I got E-coli poisoning after getting lunch on 4-15-24. No one should have to go through what I'm currently going through. I ordered Mongolian beef and the war noodles.

Hal R.

Yelp
Tea was good service excellent. Eggrolls? Just batter and cabbage even though we were told our party of four got four different varieties. All tasted the same looked the same inside. Our party of 4 each ordered different dishes the same response. "It's missing something " but none of us could say what. Everything was ok but blah. Portions huge piping hot. We really wanted to make this our next go to Chinese restaurant but it is no where near the now closed Bamboo House restaurant. Sad.

Colleen B.

Yelp
The best place in West Allis for Chinese Food. My family has been coming here for over 20 years. I have tried others (when the restaurant was closed due to the fire) and nothing came close.

Karissa N.

Yelp
10/10 love this place will definitely recommend for egg rolls, best customer service very nice, always remembers me and makes me feel at home

B E.

Yelp
I've visited this restaurant twice. The first time I ordered fried shrimp, 1 shrimp egg roll and shrimp fried rice. The fried shrimp were horrible and the egg roll didn't have any shrimp in it. Today I visited again and ordered steamed scallops and vegetables, shrimp rice and they replaced the shrimp egg roll. When I arrived home I started eating the steamed scallops and vegetables. There were 4 scallops mixed with the vegetables and the egg roll didn't have any shrimp. When I called the restaurant to complain about the 4 scallops this lady said they put 6 scallops with the vegetables and claim that the egg roll has 2 shrimps inside and it didn't have any once again. If you want real seafood go to a seafood restaurant instead of a Chinese establishment. I will never support this awful restaurant. I will support seafood restaurants going forward and I hope no one experience this type of trickery looking for seafood in a Chinese restaurant.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing!!! Her food is incredible but the egg rolls are a definite must have!!! They are fresh rolled and huge and better than any I've ever had!!! Prices are very reasonable as well!!!
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
They should really stop advertising that they have a buffet, because they don't offer it anymore
google avatar

Jen B.

Yelp
Some of the best pork fried rice I've had in a long time. Great food and friendly service! We have ordered here several times and it's always been worth it!

Heidi H.

Yelp
A traditional Chinese restaurant without a lot of decor, Egg Roll House has been recently remodeled and is very clean. The menu is basic Chinese fare, but they are willing to make things to customer preference. Server was friendly and attentive. They had a steady carry out business. While we didn't care for the crab Rangoon, the egg rolls were good and the entrees were well made and flavorful.

Kim T.

Yelp
I was really excited about the reopening of the Egg Roll House only to be extremely disappointed. I ordered sweet and sour lunch special as well as 2 egg rolls. My rice was old and dry. There was only 5 small pieces of chicken in the meal and the egg rolls tasted as if they had been sitting out. Definitely not fresh. I have never received such horrible quality before. I don't think I will be going back. Wasted trip across town for subpar food.

Janice W.

Yelp
The food is very good,it's not expensive and always hot, they're the best Chinese food in town. I am so glad they opened back up
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
I have eaten here over the years and the food has been ok. It's clear the restaurant is on its last legs and barely in business. The buffet was not fresh at all probably left over from lunch. The soups, gravy, and sweet sauce all had a skim coat like they have been on the Buffett for days. The chicken from lunch was mixed in with fresh chicken. DISGUSTING! By the way we got here at 5:30pm... Will never come back!!!!
google avatar

Mary M.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Wisconsin. I love the chicken fried rice and beef broccoli. The owners are always wonderful and enjoy talking to them every time I come. They welcome you like family.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Food was ok. Nothing amazing but not bad at all. Prices on the menu on Yelp are way off. Check the menu on Google for accurate prices. Our actual bill was $10 more than we thought it would be for only 2 people.

Yelp
At the time I visited Egg Roll House it had 3 stars out of 5. I tend to stay away from places that have middling reviews, but I figured with a name that includes "egg roll" I couldn't go wrong. The service was very friendly, but lacking with just one lady working the front counter, waiting the dining room, and filling the buffet line. To be fair, when I got there I was the only patron eating so it's not like a larger staff was necessary, but before I left other customers had shown up and the process of paying my bill was slow. The fried rice was the best part of the buffet. Normally I would consider saying that to be an insult, but it was especially good. I'm not a fan of onion so it was nice having a tasty fried rice not loaded with large chunks of onion like other Chinese restaurants serve. The orange chicken was fine, nothing special. The sweet and sour chicken was fine, nothing special. The egg rolls were sadly disappointing given the name of the place. If I ever found myself in the area again and for some reason had a hankering for fried rice, I'd absolutely order it to go and pass on the rest.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese restaurant. Their lemon chicken is excellent as is their soft noodle. Their dumplings, however are out of this world! So amazing and delicious. Their food is fresh and hot. Their service is friendly and professional. I highly recommend this place to everyone.

Gregg S.

Yelp
We get takeout from here regularly. Great Egg FuYoung. Great Fried Rice. Great House Specials. Egg Roll House is our favorite Chinese take out.

Yelp
Omg sooooooooo good. Been coming here since I was 19.....so a long time (20years) total hidden jem of West allis! Do your self a favor go for the bbq pork eggrolls!!!!!
google avatar

Anand K.

Yelp
Liked the place for quick. Dinner Buffet for 7.95. but food seems old. no spice. wish they were less bland & more chinese. They will make spicy on request, so that's nice. May eat here again due to price & will be more specfic on order next time. hth

Scott K.

Yelp
Salt and pepper chicken hot is amazing! Be sure to specify hot (spicy) when ordering it
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch on sat. The place had three tables in service during the buffet which seemed weak. I got the fried rice and egg foo young and it was bland and mushy, the egg foo young had no meat in it and the chicken fried rice was mushy. This was a lunch special so I can't speak of the buffet or dinner menu but I will try some other place in the area when Chinese is the flavor of the moment. The egg roll was a waste and that Is the best part of the meal. Swing and and miss at this place.

Vanity C.

Yelp
I love this place! My sister and I have been ordering from this restaurant for a few years now. The Hung Sue Chicken is A-mazing !
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Not enough food choices - but its all cold anyway so... I would skip this one. They do have an awesome fish tank which my daughter loved.

William C.

Yelp
Like all restaurants, you have to order what you like and what they do well. This is what we like: Pressed Duck- hard to find these days, ERH does a superb job. Shrimp in Lobster Sauce- excellent! Sauce (with black beans) is top notch, order pan fried noodles instead of rice. Sauce is so good, I could forgot the shrimp! Potstickers- again, exceptional. I can't think of any better in Milwaukee. Fried rice- we order with pork or shrimp. Excellent, reminds me of the old Chinese Chef on the north side. Really delicious. Other dishes we like: BBQ Pork with Peapods, Walnut Shrimp. We don't do the buffet, it's so much better to order off the menu These dishes are gems!
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
The food was comically bad. The service was scarce and the food was below average. Some of the food was even cold. I would not recommend this place for a poor college student. Go to McDonald's across the street for better cuisine.
google avatar

Tiffany N.

Yelp
My parents have been eating here for years and love it. I've had it a few times in the last month now and it's so good. The orange chicken is delicious, not spicy at all but I believe you can get it spicy if you want. The egg rolls are also very good and really big too. Food has always come hot and fresh. They also have a buffet, which I haven't had because I prefer to do take out but it looks decent.

Bill M.

Yelp
The food was delivered to the right place and everything was there. That's the good. Now for the bad. I ordered orange chicken. It was drowning in sauce. It tasted old and had a microwave heat quality. It was blazing hot. But tasted old and chewy. The egg roll was warm. But the taste was not fresh. I would not order again. I threw the rest away. Very disappointed. The driver was very nice.
google avatar

Long T.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese buffet in Milwaukee. Definitely try their crab rangoons and egg rolls. The buffet is definitely worth the price and is the best value in the area. They have a lunch buffet that starts at 11 and a dinner buffet as well.
google avatar

Julianah O.

Yelp
I would not recommend. We ordered take out which included wontons and 4 veggie egg rolls. It took such a long time. Over 20 minutes and we were one of the only two orders there. It was empty and the buffet line only had like ten selections. The veggie egg rolls were SUPER CHEWY. You could keep chewing it like gum and their wontons were just fried egg roll wrappers. No filling... But the customer service was superb.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Probably won't go back. I ordered the orange chicken and my boyfriend got the general tsao, they looked exactly the same and there wasn't really any difference in taste either. The food wasn't terrible, but it just wasn't that great. Didn't even want the leftovers.
google avatar

Terrell G.

Yelp
Great service. Well priced for a Chinese buffet. Lost a star for beer selection. It is just a stones throw away from miller park.
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
I traveled nine hours to get this Chinese food. I'm originally from WI, but moved to KS. Anytime I come back to visit, Egg Roll House is on my list of "must dos". The Chinese food in WI is different than in other places I have been. Totally different gravy. When I told the waitress my story, she was very nice and added extra gravy to my order. After nine hours in the car, in a cooler w/ice - the food was still great and brought a little bit of home back to Kansas.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
You guessed it.....Great egg rolls, good food and friendly servers. Price is very reasonable

Paul J.

Yelp
Despite the bad reviews, I decided to check this place out since I heard it was under new management. It was pretty damn good! The buffet was closed, so we got orange chicken, crab rangoon, and Singapore fried rice noodles. The service was very friendly, and the food was great - especially the noodles. Definitely check this place out if you're in the mood for Chinese.

Mike M.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to go for Chinese food for many years. I usually get the buffet since I enjoy having a little bit of variety. The staff is friendly and helpful and the food is great. My favorites are the orange chicken, sweet & sour chicken, chicken egg rolls and the chicken fried rice.

Judi M.

Yelp
The reviews seemed mixed but we were looking for Pressed Duck and were not disappointed by anything on the menu- and we tried a lot of dishes- pot stickers nicely browned, duck was crisp and plentiful, lemon chicken had a wonderful rich sauce that was not sweet. Finally the Singapore Noodles were plenty spicy (medium)! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Jim K.

Yelp
wasted 35.00 on the worst Chinese food I ever had. The chicken chow mein was nothing more than dry chicken with some kind of green leafy stuff. one taste and my wife threw it away. The beef lo mein was 95% noodles and very little anything else. Two tastes and my granddaughter threw it away. The beef chop suey was badly cooked beef and I think maybe two small pieces of celery and nothing else. one taste and it went into the garbage also. My daughter took one taste of the vegetable chop suey and guess where it went.....yep...into the garbage. The eggrolls were dry and had no taste. garbage again. The only thing that was edible were the fortune cookies because they didn't make them there. I can't believe this place is still in business. Make sure you stay away from this place
