I really wanted to like this place after learning about it via social media. So I used the occasion to visit friends who moved to Jersey last summer. We got six dishes: Egg Katori, Australian Fry, Volcano Biryani, Leela Lasun Bhurji, Tadka Dal-khichadi, and a Chicken Peri Peri sandwich. Some were really good, some were kind of perplexing (not in a great way), and one was bad.
The good:
The Leela Lasun Bhurji (scrambled egg curry with green garlic) was really really good; probably the best thing I had. I would recommend anything from the green garlic menu. It was pungent and spicy (though they said it was medium--I tried to get them to make it spicier and they said no for that dish). Great dish!
The Peri Peri chicken sandwich was also really really good. It was kind of a grilled cheese sandwich with chicken and veg in it and some kind of cheesy-seeming sauce. Anyway, it was really good and worth trying.
the Tadka Dal-khichadi was basically a red dal; my friend who got it really liked it---though it was pretty heavy. I liked the chili oil and dried peppers on top--which I took and put in my dish (another consistent theme with this restaurant seems to be not making the food spicy).
The egg katori was fine; like masala-spiced deviled eggs covered in cold shredded cheese (the shredded cheese made an appearance in several dishes). This seems to be one of their "big hit" dishes.
The Confusing:
Australia Fry: A very thin tomato sauce with random chunks of hardboiled egg whites in the bottom....and LOTS of that cold white shredded cheese on top. It wasn't great.
The Bad:
Volcano Biryani: this is supposed to be another signature dish and it was not great. I asked for 10/10 spicy and it was one of the least spicy dishes. It was also super rice-heavy and dominated more than any other dish by the cold shredded cheese. There was also an omelet hiding on the bottom.
In summary, some dishes were good; nothing except maybe the green garlic dish were worth coming back to eat. Also, I think the eating experience would be much better if they just cut the shredded cheese in half.
