Eitaroya

"This is a kappo izakaya with an abiding respect for dashi. The evening starts with appetisers bursting with the umami of kombu and katsuo-bushi. Dashi is used in the soup, the chawanmushi and the ohitashi of green vegetables. In each, the aroma soothes the soul. The sashimi is popular and rich in variety, and the sight of the sliced fish atop crushed ice is entrancing. Simple fare, like steamed fish with grated turnip, or vegetables with vinegared miso, makes a fitting accompaniment to sake." - Michelin Inspector

Izakaya is open till 11pm, we came at 9pm Thursday, people are eating inside at the bar with several free spots but waiters told us „we are closed”. We felt discriminated because of non-asian look and refused entrance because of that.

This place is a amazing. Very lucky to be seated. No english menu except set course outline. Staff extremely friendly. Chefs were working hard throughout the night while having fun with customers, wish we had even a little Japanese to at least understand. Had great time talking with other customers who spoke English. Opening salvo was a soup with duck and mushrooms - as good as it gets!

As a restaurant open for business, if you have barriers for language, you may put a note and mentioned about it instead of welcoming first then found that we only spoke English then said only for reservation or full for booking. This is the very first time in the world we are not allowed to enter a restaurant because that they don’t welcome foreigners. They are not in good faith,. Language is only a way to communicate, a good restaurant and a good chef shall have a good faith in their food.

My boyfriend and I were greeted by a male staff member at the door. He was extremely welcoming at first and spoke to us in Japanese, but once he found out we did not speak Japanese, he told us their restaurant was full and had us leave. There were only two people at the bar... foreigners are not welcomed here. This was the second place in Kyoto that did not let us eat at their restaurant.

Tried to eat at this establishment and was welcomed with the normal "Irasshaimase!" and the host comes to greet us. When I tried told them we had a party of 2 in my broken Japanese the host face changed from a smile to a frown and we were told they were full. There was only 3 other people in the store and plenty of open seats.

They have plenty of seats but saying only for reservation that means they only serve locals. Very old fashion Japanese way of doing biz.

Not easy to navigate the menu, but it was an amazing dinner and people were very kind. We will come back!

Came in to the empty restaurant but they said it’s full. We are obviously tourists with a 5 years old and English speakers so we were not welcome.
