I had friends flying in on a late evening flight on a Wednesday. They had suggested one of their favorite Mexican restaurants in Old Town. However, upon a bit of research, we learned that most of the restaurants in Old Town close early mid-week. We wanted a nice place to sit and catch up, and the one place open until 10 was El Agave. Apparently the restaurant has been there for a long time, but I was surprised that I had never been.
I arrived ahead of my friends, parked easily in the small parking lot and headed up the flight of stairs to the restaurant. The first thing I noticed was the decor... the walls are made up of bottles of tequila behind glass.... all throughout the restaurant. I was promptly greeted and seated on the indoor patio area. As it was around 8:30, it wasn't too crowded, but additional parties came in after I did.
I was readily given water in glass bottles, and chips with three dips (red salsa, green salsa, and bean dip). The dips were all delicious. When I looked at the menu, the first things that I noticed were the varieties of tequila and mezcal flights. I wasn't in the mood to drink much, so I chose a Cadillac margarita instead. However, I would like to come back for a flight sometime, as they have so many varieties.
The menu is not of a traditional Mexican restaurant, but a bit more high end with a bit of fusion. It is also on the pricey side compared to many of the other restaurants in Old Town.
My friends and I all had margaritas and we chose various appetizers. I had the shrimp chalupas, which were very good... and filling. I took one for lunch the next day.
Service was excellent. Our food and drinks came quickly, and we were not rushed at all.
