Cheer Up Charlie’s Owners Takes Over Closed Rio Rita Bar in East Austin | Eater Austin

"Founded in 1963 and shuttered in 2016, this longtime Tex-Mex restaurant was known for classic dishes such as enchiladas, queso with carne guisada, tortilla soup, and tacos. Its recipes and culinary heritage are being revived by the former manager and chef—who is the founder's grandson—through offerings at his new workplace." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
El Azteca- Clarksville Neighborhood fixture that has been around for years. If you are looking for filling flavorful standard dishes of Mexican cuisine this would be your place. Prices are reasonable, parking is near the front entrance which faces the main rd. We were there for a Friday late afternoon meal and it was very busy. Staff were trying their best during this time and our food server was polite. Salads were composed of fresh ingredients. It did take awhile before our food was finally brought over but everyone seemed satisfied with their choices. Nothing fancy, the decor has not changed much over the years but they must be doing something right.

This is our third visit to El Azteca. We had a great dining experience each time. The staff are friendly and attentive. The food selection is extensive and delicious. With a reservation they easily accommodated our group of eight. Fantastic margarita selection too!

Google
The food was okay. I ordered the carnitas. They were crispy but had almost no flavor. Two tortillas only. I needed another. The black beans side, also not seasoned. The tortilla chips didn't seem the freshest. The salsa was okay. The Negra Modelo was excellent. Parking was good. Waitstaff was friendly and relatively prompt. Ambience was relaxed. We had a large party so they included a 20% automatic gratuity. I'm a good tipper and do not like the forced 20%. Tipping culture has gone too far. Based on the food alone I will probably not return.

Very good atmosphere. My server was very friendly and the California burrito was delicious

Google
Delicious Mexican food! Their Chicken Tortilla Soup is so comforting. Tacos are fully loaded - tried the Fish and El Pastor tacos and they were both delicious. Even their fries were so nice and crispy. Overall excellent place. Will definitely be going back to try out other dishes.

My husband and I had our 10th Anniversary Lunch at El Azteca restaurant today~ This is our fifth time visiting this restaurant ^^ Amazing foods, wonderful service and fantastic drinks! Sangria, Fiesta Fajitas, chip and salsa.. appetizers... Very satisfied! We are definitely coming back ^^

Google
Traveling through area. And decided to grab a bite. Should have know when I saw the painting of the Dos Equis guy framed on the wall we were in trouble. Salsa and chips were the only good tasting food we had. Ceviche was a puddle of lifeless goo. Picture enclosed for reference. Al Pastor tacos were like chewing rubber. No flavor whatsoever. Server was really nice and attentive though.

Chirag S.

Google
Very delicious Mexican food restaurant with a full bar. Quantity is more than enough for one person and quality and taste is great too. Not to forget the complimentary chips salsa. See photo of Veg Burrito which I ordered. Service is great.

Yelp
We have been devoted "El Aztecans" for almost 20 years. Our tradition includes dinner at El Azteca with our family, almost weekly, after church services. When we visit without the kids (now in their 20s), it is not uncommon that restaurant staff asks about them. Times have changed, but I vividly remember crayons and placemats with activities for the kids to color. One thing that never changed was the hospitality of the staff and the quality of the food served. The restaurant is popular for dine-in, as well as takeout and delivery. When dining at the restaurant, there are three dining areas, one of which is the bar which includes some seats at the counter, tables, and a few high top tables. There are at least three televisions broadcasting sporting events. I highly recommend the Chile con Queso appetizer, Mole Enchiladas, Enchiladas Verdes, and Tacos al Pastor. Forgive the lack of photos, we dug in before I thought to take any. Hope to see you there!

Yelp
A pretty good community restaurant, being in this area over 30 years. Quite decent food and people here.

Yelp
Local spot that is going to be celebrating its 30th anniversary this October! If a restaurant has been around for that long, they're something special about it. And I was right Food: As soon as I sat down warm chips and salsa were on the table before I could take my jacket off. I ordered the seafood ceviche which comes with shrimp, fish, scallops, peppers, squid, onions, cilantro and chunks of avocado. What a first impression, it's fresh and there's enough to satisfy two people. The seasoning for all of my food was spot on. Not too spicy but not bland. I ordered the shrimp fajitas which has a little kick to it. For the first time, I'm not reaching for hot sauce. Right now there's a watermelon margarita special and I also tried the passion fruit margarita. If you are here with a friend just order the pitcher because one margarita is never enough! Service: Friendly service. Our waiter checked on us often and cleared plates and glasses when necessary. Ambiance: It is a little dark inside. There's a bar area and two areas for regular seating. The four top seating by the bar is my favorite place to sit! The seats are comfortable and they have three televisions with sports on. Overall: This is a wonderful spot to celebrate your taco Tuesday!

Yelp
Not sure when this restaurant opened, but WOW! Super excited to have a tasty Mexican restaurant nearby! We arrived around 8pm on Friday evening to no wait. We opted to sit at the bar, as that was a bit more spacious than what it looked to be at the tables. It is a cut little restaurant with more tables than you'd expect from looking at it from the outside (not a bad thing!). We were welcomed by the bartender. She was incredibly pleasant and quickly got us our order, margarita and waters. We asked her opinion for recommendations, she said anything under Gilberto's Specials was a good choice, so we focused there. The first basket of chips and salsa is on the house, follow on rounds are $3/ea ($2 for chips + $1 for salsa). Two of us opted to share the El Plato Placero with Steak. Neither of us were prepared for the size of the meal - this could very easily be shared between 3 people. We found it amusing that they only give you two tortillas for all this food. You'd have to pile 6" of food on tortilla and probably still have food leftover. The margs were strong and go down very easily - super yummy. We will definitely be back in the future. This place is located in a strip mall with a parking lot out front. The lot isn't huge and I could see it filling up during a busy time, we had zero issues parking right out front of the restaurant.

Yelp
Lili is amazing. My boyfriend and I went in last night, we are young adults so typically servers write us off immediately. But Lili did an amazing job and made us feel so welcomed and cared for. Food was also amazing as always! Love this place, and love the vibe. Thank you for your consistency El Azteca!

Yelp
El Azteca has been a go-to staple for my family for more than 20 years and it never ceases to please. With a pleasant atmosphere accented by authentic decor and serving staff that are attentive, El Azteca sets the stage for can't go wrong south-of-the-border dining. The atmospheric set up, is matched by consistently well prepared cuisine. Rarely have I ever been served any food that is less than delicious. Most recently, my party of three enjoyed: crunchy ground beef, corn tacos; a combination of beef tamale and cheese stuffed chile-relleno; and pork carnitas. All meals were served with rice and beans except the carnitas which were accompanied by beans and tortillas. We also ordered a vanilla and a chocolate fried ice cream, flan and an Azteca coffee for dessert. The Chile-relleno consisted of sweet anaheim pepper stuffed with Jack cheese and was not batter fried as has been my typical experience with this dish. The beef tamale was served on a corn husk, and was moist and flavorful with masa that was prepared perfectly. The pork carnitas were tender, juicy and very rich. The desserts were delicious the Azteca coffee was very sweet and was served cold though which was a surprise. Altogether our bill with three meals, desserts, one beer with two sodas and the coffee amounted to about 100.00 which is affordable and a price well worth the consistent quality. As expected El Azteca served quality Mexican food at an affordable price with good service and which is not always common. We will keep coming back!

Yelp
The restaurant has an unassuming outdoor facade but when you enter the decor and atmosphere is really nice. The service is really quick and the staff is very friendly. They check-in frequently and bring out food and drinks quickly. As a vegetarian there were quite a few options. The combo is $14 and is a nice however I wish the rice and beans portion was a bit larger. We ordered the xangos for desert which was delicious. I would definitely come back!

Yelp
We love el azteca! We've been coming here for years. Me & my dads favorite is the tacos del hombre which is basically tacos with steak, chorizo & bacon. Super yummy! Haven't been able to find something quite as good anywhere else. Their drinks are great, they have a wide variety of margarita flavors. We got the tamarind margarita which has a good flavor. Lastly, our favorite part is the tres leches cake. Super moist with plenty of milk & really good icing with it. Outside of what we had today, I have also gotten the Texas chimichanga in the past which is a deep fried burrito, the filling is beef & chicken, super yummy, covered in cheese. I drag my parents out here every time I'm in town. It's one of my favorite Mexican restaurants I have been to by far.

Yelp
We left our name and number in our party and they called us from the car. Was a quick turn around. First, we had an amazing server, Juan. He really was outstanding and it makes such a difference in the whole course of your meal!! The chips and salsa were served and we ordered a pitcher of Margaritas, well poured - very on point! We had appetizer for the table, Queso Fundido. It's was a plate of cheese and chorizo on top. They give you a nice size helping! Was very warm and tasted so good!! It comes with tortillas, pico and sour cream. I had the Shrimp dinner special. The shrimp was jumbo and in this butter white sauce. Cooked perfectly. Came with rice and a salad. Friends got Combo Fajitas and the steak was so tender and a good portion. Seafood enchiladas were good- wish they were in a white sauce. Overall, a great dinner and service was just superb!

Yelp
I just left this location and it's safe to say I'm never going back! The customer service was non-existent to anyone that wasn't their regulars. We had to ask repeatedly for everything, refills, napkins, water, everything. Actually, when we first came in, we weren't even barely greeted and we seated for a wow before anyone even came over to ask us what we wanted to drink. Then when I asked what they had to drink, she looked at me like I was crazy and then I had to ask her if they carried Coke products and that's when she began to list them. I tried to order a drink Spanish fluently, so I said to her the type of drink that I wanted, and she looked at me like I was crazy once again. The food was OK. Nothing really special about it honestly. It was very pretty inside, but that's about it. Towards the end we were waiting to pay. She never asked us if we wanted any boxes however, I watched her make small talk with everyone else around us every time I did ask her for something or had to re-ask her for something that she was supposed to have brought, it was like it was a problem and then I watched her look at me speak to someone else laugh and then he looks at me subtly as to not make it obvious that they were talking trash. That's when I guess the manager came over and I let him know how satisfied we were. Don't waste your time. There are truly better places that don't mind servicing everyone!

Yelp
Wow, so good in every way! I met my friend for lunch yesterday and was impressed by everything. It's in a small strip mall but there was ample, free parking. We were seated immediately and drink orders taken. I worked in food service many years ago, and I am always noticing the finer points, as it were, of giving good service. I was very impressed with the pacing and amount of contact we received. I believe their name was Lily (presented as female but I'm practicing at not making assumptions!). My burrito grande with pork was absolute perfection with the tender chunks of meat melding beautifully with the rice, peppers and cheese. I took half of everything home for later, as it was large and there were the requisite portions of refries and rice, too. I had the El Azteca margarita and the drink was fine. But as I told my friend, having not had a margarita for years, I put too much expectation on it being wonderful and it was just ... good. If I hadn't added the drink, my lunch would have been under $20 with a 20% tip. It ended up at around $30, but as I said I'm getting a second meal out of it so it's all good.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times now and plan to go back! It's a non fussy smallish Mexican place serving up authentic Mexican food as well as American favorites. Today I ordered the pork burrito with green salsa, which was mild on the spice scale but had a lot of flavor and the pork was very tender. My mezcalita was pretty good too. My husband and I agreed the salsa was really tasty - it had just enough kick to it without being too spicy.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
I ordered the Combination Fajitas (chicken and steak) and was immediately hit by a very nice aroma when I opened my box. Everything looked and tasted great! I think it's a pretty fair serving for almost $20 as well - I probably could've shared the one order with another person for lunch The guac was great too My order was ready within 15 min at peak lunch time and the staff that brought my order out for contactless pickup was also very kind. No complaints at all and will definitely come back soon

Yasmine O.

Yelp
the food here is below average. I ordered the combination fajita and The beef was so beefy tasting with zero flavor. My husband steak was basically raw with zero flavor. very poor quality

Yelp
This was my first visit here. It was packed when we got there on Black Friday around 7. We sat at the bar until a table was available which was around 7:30. Great food. The Queso Fundido was cheesy and had a generous amount of chorizo and mushrooms compared to other places I've had it. The Taquitos were good. I have only had frozen ones from the grocery so it was nice to eat fresh ones. I've never had it with guacamole or sour cream so that was unique. The beef for the fajitas was tender. Our server Annabelle was wonderful and took care of our table of five. She kept the drinks coming. Really great service and food. I look forward to trying other items at our next visit.

Yelp
Fun venue for dinner! We were in the area and I remembered this venue for the great memories with our kids growing up. We would go by after a long day at the pool and gym. Yes, this is comfort food! Shoutout to our local community heroes for keeping this spot a treasure still!!! Great staff and friendly clientele! Now that our kids are all grown up and we moved back from Texas, we asked to sit at the bar to check out scene. Clase de Azule Tequila and yummy sangria were on our must have list tonight. The area is offset from the main dining room with perfect scene of a relaxing zone while the families dined on all the yummy cuisine. Our kids always like the chicken fingers and fried ice cream! But tonight we switched our gears on our first grownup dining experience. We had a dish of extra spicy salsa with our chips, a dish of beautifully plated refreshing ceviche, and a melted cheese chorizo dish with cheese pull off the charts! So well balanced and with generous portions! Main courses was grilled fish, rice, and salad ! Hubby and I had a great meal ! The bartender was just the best! He took great care of us! The staff worked like a well oiled machine! The other patrons were happy and friendly and told us whatever we picked for dinner would be a good choice!!

Foodie F.

Yelp
Food was great! Service was a bit slow, but overall, it was a great experience. Their guacamole was outstanding!

Avery P.

Yelp
Ok not great 5th time in 15 months, flavor is Gringo bland, you can tell many item stretch made
google avatar

Dawn T.

Yelp
Good. Always friendly service. I've gotten takeout and had sit down service. Both are consistently good.
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
I remember going to this place years ago and it was very good. However a friend and I planned dinner at Great Sage but realized it was closed on Monday. I remembered this place, and will now forget about it. The food was very plain and lacked the flavor that I once remembered. The beef chimichanga looked good but inside was clumps of hamburger meat that hadn't received any Spice and the rice was dry and hard in places. Even the complementary salsa was watery and flavorless. My friend was interested in the taco salad until she realized it it came with the Caesar dressing. That combination seems weird for a taco salad.

Mike W.

Yelp
Fantastic!! Camarones Yolanda are delicious. The warm creamy sauce felt like velvet on my lips and tongue as I savored the little lumps of crab nestled in the shrimp. My girlfriend was amazed at the enthusiasm with which I feasted on this scrumptious delicacy. The margaritas were equally outstanding. We had a pair of watermelon margaritas that were full and pink. As I sipped the drink my mouth filled with the sweet flesh of ripe fruit. We really enjoyed our festive experience and are eager to enjoy another round.

L B.

Yelp
We have been coming to El Azteca for many years. We love the margaritas and food is always good. Staff is welcoming and pleasant. The grilled chicken quesadilla is the best around in my opinion.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
I've been enjoying El Azteca for more than 30 years. Food is always great and the staff are all super friendly.

Susan C.

Yelp
We ordered a takeout of Steak Tamales. There was 2 small pieces of meat in each and the meat was tough and stringy. The tamales were also flat and bland. The refried beans were pale and other than a bit of a bite did not have much taste.
google avatar

Don W.

Yelp
We stopped by for lunch. The food was outstanding. Fresh vegetables, cooked to order that looked great and tasted great. Not the typical microwaved Mexican restaurant food. Service was friendly and prompt.
google avatar

Don J.

Yelp
I truly enjoyed the food and atmosphere of this little Mexican restaurant. They charge for the second basket of chips and salsa which is unfortunate because their salsa is quite good. But at least they warned me in the menu that they would do that.
google avatar

Bill S.

Yelp
If someone is visiting Clarksville this is where I would take them. Extremely consistent over the years with great food and great service. Certified good food: Chicken mole / Quesadillas

Jenny H.

Yelp
Ordered the queso, wasn't a fan so we got that taken off our check. Ordered the wings for an app instead. They were so good! The other two dishes were amazing! Drinks were great. The waitress was super nice. Cozy seats in the bar area. Overall great experience
google avatar

Nikki G.

Yelp
My lovely neighbors recommended this place, so I made a point to go. However, as much as I love my neighbors, sometimes I don't agree with their idea of good food. And I am not sure that Clarksville is known for their amazing, authentic Mexican food. When we arrived, we were greeted promptly by the host as well as the nice atmosphere. Once seated, we received menus, water, chips and salsa. The menu, to me, set my expectations. That this isn't going to be *really good* Mexican food but more of the Americanized version overloaded with cheap cheese. I will say, though, that the margaritas were decent. The food, while not very authentic, was edible. And the service was friendly. So, while I have no big complaints overall, I can't say that I'd go back for the food.
google avatar

Brittney S.

Yelp
The best Mexican in the area! Have had a great time every time we go as everyone is so welcoming! The service is speedy, the food is amazing, and the margaritas are strong but delicious! Strongly reccomend this place!

Ed T.

Yelp
Outstanding service. Wonderful carry out food and excellent margaritas. Family favorite.
google avatar

Isadora K.

Yelp
My new favorite place. Real Mexican at last! Try the shrimp cocktail. Frozen mango and cucumber margaritas are fabulous. Mole sauce is on the Sweet Side, FYI. Service is adorable, but this is slow food, meaning made to order with fresh ingredients, made to savor, not to rush over. Plan accordingly.

Geri B.

Yelp
I love their tacos el pastor also their chili con queso dip we have been coming here for years I remember they had pink carpet and grey. The staff was pleasant. Of course the food was
google avatar

Scott S.

Yelp
Love them. They can do no wrong , margaritas Tasty and strong , food is consistent and good.

Tom L.

Yelp
Pretty average and not so fresh chips and salsa. The lunch special was expensive and not tasty.
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
I'm from Southern California so I'm pretty picky when it comes to Mexican food. I much prefer authentic, robust flavors and fresh tortillas are a must. El Azteca is the best Mexican food I have found in MD yet! We had micheladas, guacamole, and queso fundido to start. The micheladas and guacamole were on point! The queso fundido was just ok, it was a thin layer of cheese on a plate with a good amount of chorizo but normally the dish is a bit deeper so that you can really mix the cheese and chorizo together. After that we had carnitas, chimichanga covered in queso, and fish tacos. The carnitas were really flavorful, and there was a lot so I had enough to take home and eat the next day. My friend was disappointed with the chimichanga, she couldn't determine exactly what meat was in it and it had a weird taste. The fish tacos were a huge hit, it is my friends go to at this restaurant. Service was good and quick. Overall if you're looking for good Mexican food in MD this is the best I've found!
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
We've been there before and usually enjoy the food and the service. We went there today and found the service rushed. The beef in the taco pastor was dry and overcooked and my wife didn't enjoy her entree either. Maybe slow down and take the time to provide good food and service as you have done in the past.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
The house margaritas are strong! It's good but drink slow. The food is pretty good for the price and the portions are huge. The fried ice cream wasn't too sweet which I Iike. Nice Mexican place in the suburbs of Clarksville.
google avatar

Tara C.

Yelp
Just got done ordering a $90.00 meal. The one Burrito was missing the chicken that we were charged for. The Mucho Nachos, were lukewarm, tasteless, with jalapeños that I cannot understand how they were the least hot pepper, I have ever eaten. The salsa was the ONLY appezitizing item we had. The Chicken Tortilla soup was so salty, it was inedible. Also, tasteless. I am shocked this restaurant has such high reviews. Take a Giant Rotisserie chicken. Use Serrano and fresh peppers. Chop a sweet onion, garlic, shred the chicken. Add sweet corn. Top with hot pepper cheese and fresh cilantro (if you like). Save a dime.

Charlotte S.

Yelp
I live local to this restaurant and have been going here since I was really little. It has a very cozy feeling to the place and brings back many memories. The people here are very kind and are very polite if there are any issues with food, but there rarely is. The fajitas are my go-to and I love them! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone local or in town.

S H.

Yelp
Lost some of the luster it once had. Next generation seems more focused on themselves rather than customers. If your there when "parents " in charge all is good .

Bhanwarjit C.

Yelp
the restaurant's service was average and the atmosphere was poor. The food made that was poorly made with no sneeze seasoning and no flavoring very bland. It's not worth the 4 1/2 stars it should be just too, or even that.

Mark G.

Yelp
Had a doctor appointment nearby and found their yelp review. Sounded good AND when we mentioned it to the doctors staff ALL of them said it was their favorite restaurant. Food was great as was the drink and the staff could not have been nicer and more helpful. We ended up the evening calling family and suggesting that we get together there and have a family dinner. Great experience!!!!!

Angela R.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service relay good. Was so glad to find out the had dining in again. I. LOVE the trout and always get the trout and never disappointed. Love this place for Mexican food!!!
google avatar

Tara J.

Yelp
Impeccable as always! Even with it being National Margarita Day. We're given 30 min wait time frame and sat down in about 20. Can tell they make everything fresh from scratch daily. Chips and salsa are provided with table, have just enough kick in them! Service was great even with the crowds no rush. Chicken Quesadilla was on point. Skinny margarita was better then I was expecting. Always come here for Mexican, it's worth it.
google avatar

Tristan D.

Yelp
El Azteca was as disappointing as could be. For a restaurant as well rated as it is, it is a shame to have been rated a top restaurant in Howard County. With a mildly forgetful waitress, which can be forgiven, the food was disgraceful. The margaritas were mediocre at best, with the exception of the mango margarita. The queso was flavorless and a bit chunky for my liking. The most disappointing part of the evening was the fajitas. The fajitas lacked flavor, as if they were not seasoned correctly, and were bland at best. As a Texan, this was not okay. If you are looking for a good Mexican restaurant, I highly urge you to go to Ernesto's, in Ellicott City. Ernesto's will never let you down.
google avatar

Sarobar T.

Yelp
I love it!!! The fish taco and chicken barboca was amazing. They are having lunch specials margarita for 5 dollar and the mango margarita is amazing!!!! Love it!!

Gregory M.

Yelp
Great experience with curbside takeout! Quick, easy, safe, friendly, and delicious. We love their chicken mole!
