El Azteca Restaurant

I loved this place 30 years ago but not so much today. They're still in the same funky building, still serving mostly the same food they were in the 1970s, respectable Tex-Mex cuisine. They need to update their menu for those of us who gave up meat. As a vegan there's almost nothing for me on the menu. So I took the message and haven't been back in a long time.

I was flying continental and read about this austin experience one should have and so I went and it was awesome. Loved the food, liked the decor and service is with a smile. I will take my family next time. The place is very reasonable. The sauce is hot and spicy and sherbet at the end of the meal just tops it off. Love it.

The enchiladas was tops, just like my mom would make. The cabrito was so tasteful, you could taste it from the time you ordered to when you got it on your plate. I grew up there going on special occasions and never was disappointed, not even with the ice tea. I went with his son to Johnston High school and he worked there after school. It was a family restaurant who supported Austin. The restaurant closing down was a nail taken out of the backbone of Austin. Thank you "El Azteca" for the memories and the food.

Old school Tex-Mex doesn't get much older than El Azteca. They have been serving up the same chili gravy for over 50 years. Their fresh coarsely ground tortilla chips are different than any other place on town. They have a nice selection of lunch specials that include tea and sorbet ice cream.

The Mexican food at El Azteca is quite good, worth checking out and the inside is bright and kind of funky. I especially like the candies and homemade Mexican sugar cookies that they bake every morning and sell at the front for something redic like .60 cents each. It's especially fun to eat here with a large group of friends!

I read the reviews expecting to be blown away. It was an adequate lunch, but def not the authentic Mexican taste I was looking for. It was def Tex-Mex as advertised. Ground beef in your enchiladas and tacos? When Tx has the best quality and most affordable red meat in the country? smh...And apparently chalupa means one giant nacho chip with cheese, not fresca queso, but nacho cheese. The fresh made table salsa, tea, and dessert was great however.

Great Food. I generally go there for lunch. I have been doing that for last 10 years. It is not one of the chain places and service has been consistently good. Best of all, its value proposal beats any comparable places.

Wife and I went here the other day and had a great time. The staff were very nice and friendly. The food was really flavorful and we were surprised at how good it was. The place looks old and a bit run down but it's a great place to eat.
