El Borrego De Oro Review - Boyle Heights - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"El Borrego flies very much under-the-radar, and its Boyle Heights strip mall location (they have three other spots throughout East LA) is probably not going to jump out at you. But trust us, this place is great. The family-run spot has been in operation since 2003 and specializes in cuisine from the owners’ native region of Hidalgo. And what that means for you is barbacoa. Start with the consome de Borrego (lamb stew) and end with the steaming hot barbacoa sopes. It’s fantastic and cheap and the employees couldn’t be nicer." - Brant Cox

Went with 7 other friends. We ordered the Huitlacoche quesadillas and got yellow corn, with a lot of onions and about 1 mushroom per quesadilla. I have had them before and the amount of actual mushroom was nothing, just the black juices of were there. 9 bucks per quesadilla with no mushrooms was bad.

If we're talking about great food, delicious sauces and a specialty in barbacoa, Borrego de Oro is the spot. This particular location is special for being larger than the original, hence the better seating arrangement. Service is always friendly, although sometimes if busy it can be a little unorganized but they'll tend to your table promptly. You do have to take the waitress receipt to the counter and pay it prior to the meal. Make sure you do that otherwise your food won't be prepared. I especially suggest any of the barbacoa dishes, including the gorditas (my mother-in-law's personal favorites😁), green chilaquiles with asada and egg, sunny side up to pop the yolk and let it run down the tortilla chips and meat 🤤🤤🤤 I'm telling you: this spot is a great place for a delicious meal.

The Barbacoa was so good as always, authentic, real barbacoa and big portions. We got 3 lbs.(3pounds, 3libras). Great for a quick family meal!

Yelp
This place has gone so so to worst the stupid system that they have is just a waste of time for everybody you can tell this people even though they have at least 15 years in this place don't have no idea of customer service. You have to get in a waiting list and after 10 or 15 minutes they will assign you a table which is no big deal especially on a Sunday but after you get a table you have to make a line to order your food which makes no sense. They have a bunch of people running around like chicken without a head bumping into each other and the big line to order just doesn't help plus some of the people there are pissed to be there. Finally put in my order and when I am already waiting for my order they come up to me telling me that they don't have one the items I ordered which was for my son and you know kids they don't eat a lot of stuff, the thing is that I had already paid. At that moment I decided to cancel my whole order and told the owner I wanted to cancel and started giving me this attitude like I was in the wrong so I let him know about other things that I didn't like about his service, for example we where a three person party and the gave us the smallest table when the couple right after us got a table for 4 and other things, so he ended up saying that it was going to take long for me to get a refund and instead of taking care of right there he told to get in line as is there protocol to get my money back. I have bought food to go before and I can't complain at least the Barbacoa is pretty good but the attitude of the owner is bad just so he knows the food is not free and I can take my business to a lot other businesses as I did. Well good luck and remember you are not the only restaurant in town.

Yelp
Wonderful! Their parking lot can get full, at least on the weekends, so you may have to Tetris your car into a space. Now with the food - apparently they are famous for their barbacoa but I haven't tried it so I can't speak for that. However, every meal has been delicious. We've gotten: - Caldo de pollo (chicken soup) - Wet burrito de asada - Chilaquiles verdes - Kids meal sopita, quesadilla, french fries The caldo de pollo comes with rice on the side and the broth is sooo yummy. Very flavorful and made with love. The chicken breast and vegetables are nice too. The wet burrito - my spouse says it's the best wet burrito they've ever had, and that's saying something because we eat a lot of wet burritos. The salsas that make it wet are what made the burrito so decadent. The chilaquiles come with eggs, rice, beans, sour cream, cheese, and onions. You can add meat for an extra charge. They are generous with their portions. The sopita that comes with the kid's meal is sopa de fideo - it was tomato broth with small noodles. My kids loved it. The quesadilla is made with homemade tortilla. Fries are always a hit. If you're ordering to go, you come in and order at the front, otherwise if you are dining in, you seat yourself and someone will come help you. They give you complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa that comes with the chips are really spicy yet satisfying. In summary, the food is packed with flavor and has generous portions, and service was quick and friendly. Try it!

Yelp
The food is amazing, very authentic. Tacos are great with great service. The consume was very good as well. If you are in the area it's worth stopping in and giving it a try.

Yelp
Have been coming here for over 10 years.! Food had been good until 12/20/2024 tortillas where bad and old "owner stated nobody had complained about them and we were the first" he seemed upset that we complained in regards to the food and handed us the same tortillas ! Will never comeback here!!

Yelp
I come here often. The chilaquiles verdes are seriously my favorite chilaquiles, they are so delicious. The Tlacoyos are amazing! Even the salsa and chips they bring are really good. I've never had an issue here, ever.

Christina S.

Yelp
A must when visiting LA. Tried their house special which was the barbacoa and consome it was a 10/10.

Vidal L.

Yelp
Excellent food and service The barbacoa and consome are the main dish here and it won't disapoint

Yelp
Loved this place since I was a teenager! As of late we have gone a few times and there's been like two times the console seems watered down. We usually go with the consomé and barbacoa on the side unfortunately, I feel like they're starting to just change their quality of cooking.

Yelp
If there was the option of NO stars, I would pick that. Really bad service. I ordered over the phone, I come to pick up and they still have me wait in line. Which is fine, I understand there are other people coming to place orders. But a guy just walked in, stood in the front, he saw there's a line. And the girl in the front just took his order. So then why are the rest of us in line??? I asked why is she already helping him when there's more people ahead of him. She proceeded to take his order. And argued with me that he was not next, when I'm clearly seeing her taking his order.

Yelp
Honestly horrible customer service. Upon entering we were told to sit down at a table in the restaurant and that someone would come to take our order,so we did and after a long time nobody came so we asked the man who circulating and who looked like the owner if we could place our order. The man didn't know if they had the main protein advertised, we repeated our order each about 4 times, then he gave the order to us and told us to go make line and give the order to the cashier/hostess. After a 15 minute wait in line, my father put in the order and paid for everything upfront something that the rest of the seated clients didn't do. After another 10 minutes he comes back to the table and says that he forgot to ask us about food accompaniments for one of the orders and that we can pay for it afterwards even though we had already paid. Once the food finally arrives we begin to eat and notice that everyone is being served at their table, nobody is being made to pay upfront and the only people that are in line are there for orders to go. I can say with the outburst confidence that I'm never coming back, the food is lackluster in flavor, the 2 items I ordered, we're simple and something every Hispanic restaurant excels at since they're simple dishes, but the soup had no taste of tomato or even onion, it had an off flavor, after a few tablespoons I didn't want anymore but we finished because it had been paid for but overall the experience we had was just terrible. I hate having to write a negative review especially since we had high hopes for this place having been recommended by family friends, but truly disappointed as others were being actually served correspondingly and we were ( what I feel is snubbed ) and made to input our order twice, once with the gentleman and the second when made to stand in line for pick up and give our order yet again to the cashier/hostess, something which I repeat none else did! and yet my father had to go wait yet again in line and pay again at the end of our meal for the food accompaniments the man came to tell us he forgot about when he took our order.

Yelp
It could have been a restaurant of any ethnicity, some of the food was Greek to me. Right in the middle of Downtown, Central LA, Boyle-Heights & HP/SG/Bell on Washington in LA on the corner of the famous Soto Street not far off from the 10, 5, 101, 60 Fwys & Olympic blvd lies El Borrego De Oro Restaurant. Btw, Borrego means Lamb I am evaluating this food from the perspective of a Mexicali Mexican raised in the USA, may rating may be lower than others. Barbacoa I am used to more seasoning in my barbacoa, I will not say this was bland or flavorless, but from my perspective it had less seasoning than I was used too. But, still it was great in terms of the meat, the heat and the greet. Consume I did not eat much, my two buddy's who loved it. The consume tasted like Pho with no seasoning. It had a little hominy, beef flavoring and a side lf onions, cilantro green & red suace to add. Salsa & Chips Man, that red sauce was hot, as I humorously learned. Next time, If I get the barbecoa or "Buchete" as my buddies reffered to it I will get the rice and beans instead of the consume. Why? because the seasoning of the rice and beans will balance the less seasoned barbecoa. Though, I kind of wanted to try thier asada too. There is usually enough parking, but its not a huge lot. Service is very freindly and the servers are beautiful too. Finally, there may be a Corn stand outside, fresh and warm, you can season with lemon or other items.

Yelp
We supposed to go to one lady who sells barbacoa de borrego on the street somewhere in East LA but we could not find it. So we asked some ladies on the street where we can find a good barbacoa place, and we ended up going "El Borrego De Oro." Everything looked and taste good. I went there with one of my Mexican friends who claims to be a big barbacoa fan. He even gave a good rating on this place. I don't know why some of the previous reviewers talked about "the meat doesn't have enough flavor" or "consome " being so bland...To me the meat was really flavorful and tasty INCLUDING fat(I literary nibble fat after being so full with tortillas) and consome was perfectly cooked as my liking. When we went, it was about 9:30am on Sunday, go there early cuz it gets crowded afterwards. Unlike to other raters, I gave this place a four stars...just because I hope I can find a better barbacoa place somewhere in LA. But so far I this this is one of the best barbacoa that I have had here in "el norte."

Yelp
Good small place but they are quick in serving.. food is good and really tasty.. just like back in the home land

Yelp
Tend to come here sometimes with parent. My dad order some barbacoa and consome to go. We get home and the consome is so burnt and black looked liked it was leftovers from a few days ago. We went to let the manager know about the bad food we got and he said he had over 30years experience with barbacoa basically we didn't know any better. We end up leaving with a refund on our order. Not a good way to run a business especially since your 30 years in the business, we come from a family who run business of barbacoa from pachuca hildago so please don't tells us we know nothing.

Yelp
I went to this place because my co-worker took me some of their Barbacoa for lunch and I found it really good. So I decided to go for lunch but it was totally different, the Barbacoa was salty n it looked like they have re-heated it soo many times I guess that's why it tasted soo salty! The service wasn't very good. Maybe I went to the wrong one because there's another location, I will ask my co-worker. I'll let u guys know if I have better luck on their other location!

Yelp
Came here to meet a friend for breakfast. This is a no frills kinda place. It has a authentic barbacoa de borrego. The salsas are fantastic in flavor. I'm not a fan of Borrego but took some home for family to try, the liked it very much. The plate is served up with rice beans, broth, nopal, and tortillas (hechas a mano).
google avatar

Rosio R.

Yelp
No flavor, no salt, consome taste like water with garbanzos. Meat isnt seasoned and does not taste like anything. Service was faulty, and waitress was not able to do anything about our food.

Martin S.

Yelp
A block away from an even I was in the area for... Happy I decided to go check it out.Small hole in the wall but clean and waiters are prompt. The service was excellent! The food was fresh and delicious. Will visit again whenever I'm in the area.

Maria M.

Yelp
Worst service ever waited to get a table for 5 was told take that table. Also was told you pay when you order so then I waited again to place order the cashier which I'm assuming is an owner took the person behind me first cause apparently he was waiting before then was told we could only be sat outside cause we were 5 yet she had serval parties with more then 6 ppl and because the girl at the register was having a bad day apparently she refused to service us. Will definitely never be back and never recommend this place.

Elena C.

Yelp
So clean So friendly And the fresh juices are really good The food is very good too I recommend the soups We come to LA once a week and this is always are go to
google avatar

Yelp
Barbacoa with it's authentic taste at it's best. Many people complain that the Barbacoa may taste "bland" or "unseasoned"...that's because they do not know what Barbacoa is! Barbacoa is meant to be eaten with a Consome (dipped in it, or accompanied with a taco). Both salsas are very good (although I prefer the red one). I almost forgot, there Horchata (rice water) IS made from rice and they make it, which explains it's tasty and natural flavor!
google avatar

Jae R.

Yelp
They were out of barbacoa the day we went, but we had the Albondigas soup (super bomb!), I had a Tlacoyo (that was delicious, cheese and potato...nomnomnom), and the Baby Pork Ribs in Green Sauce (excellent)....the lady had a Torta, which was actually one of the tastiest Torta's I have ever tasted... right across the 4th or 6th St Bridge, and definitely worth the travel to have a great tasting, freshly made, authentic as you can find, inexpensive and affordable meal, this is your spot...next time they best have some barbacoa!!
google avatar

ColumBA D.

Yelp
Barbacoa: Best in LA! Soft, juicy. Don't come here late, to avoid dryness. Tried the pozole for the 1st time, it's okish...added a tone of oregano to have that pozole flavor. All the waitress are new. We hadn't issues with the previous bunch, but these girls are super sweet & attentive. The 1 star less is for the pozole. I lived in Mexico City for 20yrs & my mom's from Hidalgo, birth place of Barbacoa, we don't joke with Mexican flavors!
google avatar

Jorge G.

Yelp
If you want some ok barbacoa hit this place up. It's not the best I've ever had, but it gets the job done.
google avatar

Guadalupe S.

Yelp
This is a horrible place never go there service is the worse in LA dirty tables never clean dishes after you finish take forever to serve food never refill your drinks and really bad actitud
google avatar

Yelp
Horrible service and rude waitress I went 30 minutes before closing and they didn't want to serve me horrible like if they don't want to serve you then close the restaurant and that it and fix your hours
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
If i had an option of giving zero stars or negative zero stars to this HORRIBLE, unorganized, shitty costumer service, with obviously no business skills owner and employees, I would. Unfortunately I'm asked to give stars. Anyway the way they run this business is horrible. I placed an order on Tuesday for the 31st Saturday. When i placed my order I specifically asked the dumb lady who took my order if she wanted my card number to pay off my order or to give a deposit, she said no you can pay when you pick up your order on Saturday, I repeated my self and asked..."I don't have to give a deposit ?" "I just pay the amount when I pick up my order?" She said yes. There's a reason why I asked multiple times, don't you think?? Many places ask for a deposit, especially for a large order. I was too good to be true. But again the dumb lady who too my order was very reassuring. Never thought I'd had a problem. When It was time to pick up my order on Saturday, I came to a surprise that I wasn't gonna get my order because..... I didn't give a deposit!! Shit ...Didn't I ask about the deposit multiple times when I placed my order.? Super long story short Myself and many people didn't get our orders. And apparently I wasn't the only one that was told that no deposit was needed. The owner and I assume the owners daughter who was the one charging, along with the rest of the employees were super rude and careless. Huge miscommunication from their part, what type of business are they running??? I'm sure and I hope they loose clientele. On the bright note I was able to find another similar business not too far from here that were extremely nice, and let me place a last minute order. I did have to wait an hour or two but i got what i wanted. They were busy, and when I walked into that business, it was a lot more organized with their big orders. Will definitely not be coming back to borrego de oro and will start going to this other place that I will happily give my money to. Stay away from borrego de oro if you don't want to be disappointed.

Fernando U.

Yelp
Weirdly dry meat? Rude waitress!!! I asked for water with ice and was told they were out of ice. The next customer was served a regular drink with ice.
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
Food was ok but the service is the worst ... Rude waitresses waiting for a tip depending on how you look
google avatar

Niko E.

Yelp
Bowl of broth and one 1/4lb lamb taco is all it takes. Lamb is their specialty, their flavors are alway consistant, too bad moved out of town.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
The food is very good . I went last weekend and gain this weekend for breakfast . The service is fast and the food is delicious . The tacos de Barbacoa come with a lot of meat I just ask for extra tortillas because from that taco I can more .
google avatar

Vidal L.

Yelp
I loved the restaurants main dish. Its an order of steamed lamb tasty and soft with rice , beans and of course hand made tortillas . its also includes a very tasty lamb soup. There's many other good plates as well if you're not into lamb. I highly recommend this restaurant

Perla M.

Yelp
Please do not eat the chips, or salsas !! I heard they are recycled from left overs and we would always find nasty chips and soggy . the salsas even tasted like water. someone could get sick. there was a curly hair in the consome.. ughh eww
google avatar

Ayleen J.

Yelp
