The 17 Best Burritos In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"In Lower Pacific Heights? Your internal burrito GPS will point you toward El Burrito Express 2 (the original location is in Parkside). The casual counter-service spot consistently hits all the marks that make for an excellent super burrito, with tender meat (there are a ton of seafood and vegetarian options, too), and a nice balance of crema, guacamole, and pico de gallo. If you’re in the mood for something less traditional, they have a few special burritos stuffed with things like regular french fries, sweet potato fries, or pineapples. " - Julia Chen 1, Lani Conway, Will Kamensky

Google
Probably one of my personal favorite burritos around this area. I absolutely love the Large Meat/cheese El Bronco Burrito. It's a couple more dollars than the usual but the meat is tender and delicious. The green salsa is super tasty too.

I doordashed. The first time I ordered the Taco Salad and it was excellent. This time I got 2 enchilada combo meal. It was horrible. I went to eat it and the foil from the plate was mixed into the food. I threw it all away. What a dissapointment.

Google
We ordered taco salad and veggie burrito. Both tasted great! The portion size is more than enough for one person!

Google
My chicken burrito did not taste good. Something in it was burned. It could have been any of the cooked ingredients but the whole thing tasted pretty bad as a result. My first time here and the only thing I ordered. It was edible and I ate it anyway, but if they are this sloppy I would be concerned about whatever else they do in the kitchen.

Note: they do check COVID vaccination if you want to dine indoors. This Mexican restaurant was bustling with a ton of people lining up to order (including us). Everything is med fresh and delicious, from their tortillas to their chips and salsa. The mango pork taco had sweet chunks of mango, a generous serving of tender pork, and a sprinkling of fresh cojita cheese. The gigante taco was filled with flavorful, charred carne asada, strips of roasted sweet potato, and beans. This was also an amazing taco. Those super fresh flour and corn tortillas are good enough to eat on their own! The tortilla chips were crunch and homemade While the tacos may seem expensive, remember this is San Francisco, and honestly for the portion it is incredibly worth it!

Google
Came here through DoorDash going out offer. They straight up said at payment they don’t honor it anymore. Person was misleading. They kept wanting to charge me for more salsa. I paid for Guacamole. Gave me a half portion in a small cup. Unreliable marketing and cunning people. Not happy. Food was OK.

Google
I got a chicken taquito, and double carne asada macho burrito. For its’ size, it’s an amazing deal. The meat tastes grilled, and they aren’t messing with portions or flavors. Even my taquito was stuffed with grilled chicken, fresh cilantro, and onion. If you like spicy, get the salsa verde. Red sauce just tastes like an average salsa. Free nachos were included with my order too. Definitely making this my go to for burrito and taco cravings.

Google
My new favorite burrito spot! Vegetariano and tofu burritos are delicious and have high quality ingredients and generous portions. Even my picky vegan partner loved them. Good prices too. Will be back, thanks!

Yelp
I recently went to buy a surf and turf burrito but it was mainly rice and beans. Flavor wise it is good. Another thing to have in mind prior to visiting this place is that there is no salsa bar, so you'll be getting those tiny cups already filled. I saw that they had some sort of Mango salsa, which I was curious about, asked for it and got charged for it. Anyways, good place, good taste but I think their service can be better.

Yelp
Always walked by this place but never tried until recently after an appt nearby. Got the NorCal and according to their menu, consisted of carne asada, grilled onions, cheese, house fries, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, expresso sauce. Not sure what the expresso sauce was but it was delicious. The burrito itself is very filling. The only thing I don't like is the house fries inside this burrito, but that's more of a personal preference tho so if I order it again, I will probably ask them to leave that out. Friendly & helpful service. Thank you. Located on Divisadero and Bush.

Yelp
Te amo, El Burrito Express! I dont know how I havent known about this gem hole in the wall, but this place has probably been here for a long time and it's now my go to for burritos! The food is great and the prices are decent. Especially compared to all the other places in the neighborhood that are inflating their prices. I love watching the assembly line as they make the food so efficiently and inhaling the yummy smoke from the kitchen. The burritos come with FREE chips and salsa. Pro tip: If your short on cash, eat on the cheap and order a cheese quesadilla for under $5.

Yelp
3.5 stars. Comfy spot with window-side tables that make for good people watching on Divisadero Street. The Taco Salad was smaller than I thought it would be, but was filling enough, especially when paired with the tasty free chips and green salsa. The taco salad shell was OK. Friendly service. Complimentary water and paper cups. Clean single-stall bathroom in the back.

Yelp
I tried this place twice and both times the burritos were bad mushy and very disappointing

Yelp
The value menu is so delicious with portions being a good size for the price. We got the tostada, 2 enchiladas and a nacho from the value menu. We were stuffed and had quite a few leftovers. The service was quick and the food was made delicious to order. The staff was courteous and there were plenty of utensils and napkins. Plenty of seating and a great spot to help satisfy cravings.

Yelp
I had another appointment at UCSF this morning so decided to drop in El Burrito Express at 11;45 am. The lunch crowd was steadily coming in. There were only a few tables open for dine in. My first time trying El Burrito Express and I liked that they had a lot of options on the menu. I ordered the El Burrito large with carnitas. The carnitas were mushy and not crispy at all. This was a bit disappointing. They blended in with the refried beans texture. Sad that only the green salsa was available. But the chips were light and made in house. A lot of seating but during prime lunch hour it gets busy it seems. Can order online

Yelp
Pretty solid burrito spot in lower pac heights! I was craving a cali burrito and usually hit up El Farolito or Underdogs but I wanted to try something different. I ordered El NorCal burrito which had some perfectly charred carne asada, onion, fries, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, pico, and salsa. The burrito was a pretty decent size (almost two servings if I wasn't super hungry.) The flavors balanced each other out nicely and the burrito wasn't dry, which can happen in some cali-style burritos because of the fries. Their chips and salsa were also bomb--fresh, thick, and crunchy--but not super oily (I wish I grabbed more before I left). As for the restaurant itself, the interior was clean, there was good seating, and the staff were pretty friendly. There is also lots of street parking. I will definitely be back to try other options!

Yelp
Had a regular carne asada burrito and it was delicious. I like that they have an option without rice since I tend to ask for no rice. Clean friendly little taqueria.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and it wasn't busy at all. We were served immediately and the food was so good! We got chips and guac and I got a carne asada wet burrito. It was so filling and delicious; it was only $15 and could definitely feed me for 2-3 meals. The chips and guac was a fantastic deal as well; they gave us a huge tub of guac and chips for only $6.50! This is definitely a stable burrito place for Lower Pac Heights and I'll definitely be here again :)

Yelp
I want to give this location more stars but I cannot. I love EBX but I've had issues with this location before.. A manager has reached out and rectified the situation, treating me to a fix and letting me know it will not happen again. I am very appreciative of their kindness.. I chalked it up to staff maybe having a bad day, no big deal, took down any negative review. But then tried the same order two more times at this same location and received it wrong, again, twice. I regularly frequent the ebx on taraval and they never get my order wrong. If you're looking for solid Mexican food, I recommend the drive over to the sunset. The best burrito in the city.

Yelp
Excellent burrito spot. Food was ready very quickly and everything was hot and fresh. We tried the norcal burrito which was great and the shredded chicken wet burrito which was sort of like an enchilada in that it was covered (smothered) in sauce. It was different but really good, I would probably opt for the carne asada in the wet burrito next time but that's just personal preference, both were tasty! There is some seating inside, none outside. I appreciated that they had self serve water because I hate when I have to keep asking or run out while enjoying a burrito.

Yelp
went here before a concert at the Fillmore! It was so cute inside, a nice chill vibe to sit and chat with my friend while having a nice meal! The service was amazing, the woman at the front knew exactly what I wanted before I did, from an extra plate to some good salsa! The food was pretty good, i definitely go back!

Yelp
I had been coming to EBX since they opened 30+ years ago. They are walking distance from my house. Very convenient. The food has been consistently excellent. The service has been consistently not great. I used to visit EBX once a week, sometimes twice a week for as long as they have been opened. I guess you would call me a long time customer. I pretty much ordered the same thing for myself and my family and the food was always good. Unfortunately, I would say 2 out of 4 times they would get my order wrong. A lot of times I wouldn't notice the order was incorrect or something was missing until I got home. I would have to walk back and let them know the order was wrong. I was always pleasant , even though this was a regular occurrence. About a year ago. I did my usual weekly visit. I got home and my burrito was missing . I called them and let them know. No apologies just "oh, you can come back and pick it up". I just got home and didn't want to walk back and wait for my order that should have been done correctly the first time. I just said forget it and can I get a refund. (No refund as of yet) It has been over a year and I haven't been back since and don't plan to. It's not worth the aggravation. I'm really bummed because I really like the food and EBX was my family's weekly go to for good take out food. I know this is an issue with other families in the neighborhood that go to EBX. The same thing. Foods great but, they can never get my order right. So, I know it's not just me. Also , the one employee that's usually at the register taking orders is so unpleasant. She's been there for years. Never smiles. Like I said I have been coming to EBX for 30+ years. Never a "hi" . I always feel like I'm inconveniencing her. I always say "hi" to her and she barely looks up and acknowledges me as a customer. She always seems like she doesn't want to be there, Like I said , I will take my business elsewhere where at least my business is appreciated. I have been going to Cumaica coffee shop for about the same time as I was going to EBX. They know my name and always, always get my order correct and are SUPER friendly. For other long time customers. Please take a moment and make sure orders are correct and you at least greet all of customers.

Yelp
Cheese enchiladas and carne asada burrito/taquitos are delicious! It was really nice to get extra salsa verde and salsa roja, which went perfectly with my cheese quesadilla. The taquitos are also really good and affordable. The service is fast and friendly, and the inside of the restaurant has nice paintings and a clean bathroom.

Yelp
Have to go for the bajacal burrito. Shrimp and fries married into a burrito, with rice and avocado. Always super fresh and delicious. A great spot to try for awesome Mexican food

Tara D.

Yelp
I had a carne asada taco. It was huge and excellent quality. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Shelley T.

Yelp
My bf likes this place and I think the flavors and textures are not bad, but everything is way too salty. I like their version of the salsa verde, it's a little smokier than other places. I don't normally order chicken but I decided to try something new and the chicken burrito had nice big chunks and was pretty flavorful. Really if they just tone it down with the salt, it's a solid burrito. Service for takeout was pretty fast and you get chips with your order.

Yelp
Such a cute spot to eat at ! Ordered a El Express burrito with steak ! Wow I haven't been to a good Mexican place that equally gives enough of every single ingredient! Would recommend and come back a million times . #Supersatisfied

Yelp
Reasonable prices, good quality and choice of sizes for burritos. Courteous service, clean place, including a very clean bathroom.

Yelp
Excellent food, rice & beans. Our favorite place for tacos & burritos. We ordered delivery tonight & everything was excellent! Thanks!

josh d.

Yelp
Great food, good prices, and open late. The employees are always the same so the portions, quality, etc are ways consistent.

Michael O.

Yelp
Yesterday we ate at El Burrito Express 2 and had a very good meal. We ordered two El Bronco grill chicken burrito's and they were excellent, plenty of grilled chicken and fresh avocado's and the right balance of rice and beans.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food! Nice place to stop if you want good burritos at a great value. This is sure to become our regular Mexican food spot in our neighborhood! Staff is extremely friendly and accommodating :) definitely recommend
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Food is still good when it has the expresso sauce, but worst carnitas I've had. Taste like boiled pork after you make soup. Dry, not crispy and no flavor. Chips I ordered were really dark from using oil too many times to fry, and fries were all soft and soggy. I also asked for no tomatoes and onions and here you see enough to make a salsa bowl.
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Such an unassuming but satisfying meal! We ordered the california burrito and carne asada nachos to go. Both were delicious, and the california burrito is generously filled with French fries, steak, beans, and salsa. I'll definitely be coming back and trying out other items on the menu!
google avatar

Yelp
I've only ever gotten delivery here, but in the two years of ordering via Postmates/Uber Eats, the experience has been solid each time. The only thing that gets missed are the utensils/napkins even if I put it in the notes to include them, but since I always get delivery to work or home I have silverware to use just in case. The food is always fresh, travels well, and I like that I can order salsa in pint or half pint sizes in case I need extra hot sauce. They always include a complimentary baggie of chips and two small containers of salsa with every order. I recommend the green salsa - yummy! My favorite thing to order is the taco salad with chorizo or carne asada. The shell is filled to the brim with beans, rice, meat, cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole. It's the best!
google avatar

Jack R.

Yelp
How strange, I ordered a taquito with ground beef and they gave me basically a taco. Aren't taquitos supposed to be fried? They didn't seem to care or understand. First off the ground beef was Horrible like cat food. "I can't even," I thought to myself. The Carne asada taco was better but the beans were dry and flavorless. The horchata had a weird star anise flavor or cardamom flavor to it Honestly, the best thing about this place was the fresh chips.
google avatar

Jackie Q.

Yelp
I ordered the asada fries and carnitas el bronco burrito via DoorDash for a late lunch/early dinner. If you're anything like me, you only DoorDash when you are so absolutely starving that you can barely think and can't get off the couch. I was so hungry that I didn't initially notice that this spot was called El Burrito Express. Generally I'm rather skeptical of "express" places because of the word's connotation with fast food and being generally low in quality, but my dasher was on his way with my order less than ten minutes after I placed it so the restaurant definitely lives up to their name. I got my food considerably earlier than my original estimated delivery time, and you know whenever that happens you just feel extra good. I ordered two items because I thought both would be on the smaller side due to the pricing, but to my surprise both items were decently sized. My food came with two small bags of tortilla chips and three small pots of salsa, two red and one green. I'm a sucker for a good salsa verde and the one here definitely has my approval. It's got a chunkier consistency and a good spice. Both the burrito and fries came with a generous portion of fresh avocado, which only means bonus points in my book. Just one item would've been enough to fill me up, and I really appreciate how the el bronco burrito is just a smaller version of a super burrito because I always end up wasting some of those big hefty super burritos because it's just too much food for me. The red salsa was on the watery side and I wouldn't say is remotely as good as the green. The tortilla chips were quite hard and on the fried end of the spectrum but if it's complimentary I can't complain. The carnitas in the burrito were on the saltier side and had a bit of a spice, so if I were to order the el bronco burrito again I'd try a different meat option. All in all, if you're starving and unable to stand up I would definitely recommend ordering for delivery from here to ensure that you get food forthwith. Honestly salsa options didn't even cross my mind when I ordered but salsas have always been an extra charge at other San Francisco Mexican spots I've visited in the past. It's kind of a hassle to order Mexican on DoorDash when you're presented with multiple salsa options, different item styles, take this out and then substitute that, so you've got to appreciate a place that can be trusted to deliver a solid experience without needing detailed instructions.
google avatar

Katie H.

Yelp
I live right next to EBX and this place feels like home. They will tend to your Mexican food needs and more. I like to eat gluten free and I will bring them my own personal gluten free tortilla every now and again and they will take it from me and make a burrito with it. Is that not the kindest thing? The mango carnitas taco is mouth-watering, the salad is crisp and refreshing and don't even get me started on those loaded burritos. This is THE Mexican place to try if you are in Lower Pac Heights area.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick update The breakfast burrito w/ chorizo is outstanding Green sauce is really good too
google avatar

Steven ..

Yelp
I lived next door to this place for 6 years and I still go 2-3 times a week. It's a great deal, delicious and quick! Try the Baja Cali burrito if you like shrimp!

Marina R.

Yelp
The norcal burrito is amazing! Kinda pricey but the burrito itself is extremely long so its worth it. Expresso sauce is great. Just wish the cheese was a bit more melted but other than that, its an amazing cute little restaurant
google avatar

Kunal R.

Yelp
My favorite burrito spot in SF. The burritos are huge and all of the meat options I have tried have been great (carne asada, pollo asada, spicy shredded chicken, al pastor). Burritos have always been hot, tortillas browned just a bit, and good balance of ingredients. Generally most burrito spots in SF feel more or less the same quality wise so I extend my comparison to their salsas. Compared to other popular spots in SF, the verde and roja are significantly better. The verde is a bit smokier and darker than the traditional verde, and the roja actually has some heat which most other spots don't have.
google avatar

Brandon P.

Yelp
Nothing but great things to say about this spot! The ingredients tasted very fresh, authentic free and a vast amount of options from meats, tortillas, and even healthy options! I loved that they have black beans options, vegan brown rice, whole wheat tortilla, all the things I love. The horchata is BOMB! Don't forget to add espresso sauce on EVERYTHING! The burritos are huge by the way. This is a spot I can see myself coming back to.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito is one of the best I've ever had and the salsa is especially good here. The staff are kind and the decor is cute.

Yelp
Food is fire! So good! Enchiladas and burritos are my favorite! Super consistent never had a bad delivery from them. Highly recommend!

Yelp
3.75 stars rounding up A convenient location for me since it's around a fitness studio I attend Tacos are right around $3 to $4 and you can't go wrong with any of the meats Tacos are pretty huge.. 2 tacos can easily fill you up (but I order 3 lol don't judge me) If you're craving Mexican cuisine, I'd recommend to stop by in the area
google avatar

Alissa H.

Yelp
So delicious! Ordered takeout through Uber eats and it only took about 15 minutes! There's a lot of options but I opted for the super burrito with ground beef. I was actually pleasantly surprised I wasn't sure how the ground beef would turn out but I enjoyed it! It was like a very saucy ground beef with lots of flavor! Would definitely be back and try another one !
google avatar

Breanna D.

Yelp
Loved the friendly staff and delicious food. I have dined in their restaurant on Divisadero and also ordered food for delivery at an event for 150 people. The taste and service was trustworthy, thoughtful and delicious in both cases!
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
What a gem! I recently moved from San Jose, and was worried that I wouldn't be able to find a good Mexican spot. But the burritos here are pretty solid for $9! The al pastor burrito was my favorite and they seem to have a great breakfast burrito menu as well. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Simon K.

Yelp
Simply exquisite food. One of the best quesadillas I have ever had. I highly recommend trying all their meats.
google avatar

Hunny E.

Yelp
I don't even know why I bother eating in this are. All of the food is overpriced and poor quality. I ate here for the first time six months ago and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my meal. Unfortunately, my second experience wasn't great at all. $17 for an El Cancun burrito, which should have included shrimp and veggies. Instead, the burrito was filled with huge chunks of red bell pepper and zucchini, some cabbage (that wilted due to the temperature of the burrito) and mushrooms. Only the first few bites of the burrito had shrimp. The veggies mentioned hardly warrant a $17 burrito but then again this is SF. Officially scratching this place off my list of tasty lunch options.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
Delicious mexican food I can always count on. This is my usual spot when I'm in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Eric K.

Yelp
Food is generally good but I'm consistently disappointed by their churros. You know how you get when you're craving a churro. I ordered 3 this evening and all 3 tasted like freezer burn and had absolutely NO cinnamon sugar on them. AT ALL! So pissed about it!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a weds around 2 pm and ordered an al pastor burrito with melted cheese and extra pico di gallo, I remember eating here pre COVID and it was great. However this time the tortilla was dry because I asked them to melt the cheese, the first 1/8th of the burrito was all bean , then I hit avocado then finally meat then finally a little bit of pico di gallo, it also had a big crease of tortilla in the middle of the whole burrito due to bad folding :( don't understand why some taquerias can't fold burritos correctly so that there's equal distribution of everything in each bite. If I open my own taqueria, I'll call it equal distribution. Can anyone suggest a burrito place where they fold it correctly? Al pastor taste great and the hot sauce and chips were good, the menu is huge here,
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
oh man was this good. I had just gotten up from a nap and was starving. My girlfriend and I decided to walk here and i tried ordering the biggest thing on the menu, which i believe it to be this huge burrito with sauce on top of it (from the enchiladas I believe). It was delicious! Packed with flavor and spice and meat and beans and it was just everything I would have expected it to be. The sauce on top of the burrito was an AWESOME touch and added tons of flavor to the burrito. If you are looking for a quick bite, that is decently priced and packed with flavor, check this place out for sure.
google avatar

Ron M.

Yelp
Got their breakfast burrito with pollo asado. Added chunky potatoes gives the burrito a nice texture. Chips are nice and crunchy. So good!! Friendly staff. Lots of seating area, but gets super busy during lunch around 12ish.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today and had a burrito...I did not know this was affiliated with the taqueria on Taraval street. In fact the flavors and furnishings remind me of Taqueria Los Mayas on Clement street. I enjoyed my burrito though the flavorings were somewhat different than most other burritos. The chips were great though I suggest a chunky tomato salsa to go with these nice thick home made chips. The red salsa is too smokey for chips thoughbut it was good poured on the burrito as was the salsa verde. It was busy...lots of customers from the nearby hospitals but our burritos were prepared fast. The restroom was clean. While this would not be on the usual burrito circuit, it was a good meal.
