The 16 best Mexican restaurants in Philly.

"People love to drench things. A lot of people order a stack of pancakes just to douse it in syrup, and we love to drown our mashed potatoes, turkey, and stuffing in gravy. Callowhill’s El Purephecha takes the drenching game to the next level–they pack homemade masa tortillas with chorizo or garlic shrimp, and then smother it all in a spicy rojo or peppery salsa verde. Come to this Mexican spot after you’ve had a long day and need a night of tender seafood tostadas, enchiladas in a spicy poblano sauce, and grilled steak quesadilla dripping with crema. It’s easy to get a reservation at the last minute as well, so the only thing standing between you and rounds of strawberry margaritas is deciding if you want them frozen or not." - alison kessler, candis mclean

15 Places In Philly To Have A Last-Minute Group Dinner In Philly

"Humans love to drench things. We’re betting a lot of people exclusively order pancakes just to douse them in syrup, and we love to drown our mashed potatoes, turkey, and stuffing in gravy. Callowhill’s El Purephecha takes the drenching game to the next level by packing homemade masa tortillas with things like chorizo or garlic shrimp and then smothering them in a spicy rojo or peppery salsa verde. Come to this Mexican spot with friends and split the seafood tostadas, al pastor tacos, and grilled steak quesadilla dripping with crema. And since it’s ideal for walk-ins, the only thing standing between you and rounds of strawberry margaritas is deciding if you want them frozen or not." - candis mclean, team infatuation

The Best Tacos In Philadelphia

"Callowhill’s El Purephecha takes the taco game to the next level—packing homemade masa tortillas with battered fried fish, juicy grilled octopus, and smoky gulf shrimp. But we’re pretty sure they spent the years they’ve been open perfecting their al pastor tacos. The pork is marinated in chiles and garlic, so it’s more aromatic than a three-wick candle. Plus, the onions add a nice crunch. Come to this Mexican spot after you’ve had a long day and need a night of margaritas and tacos in spicy habanero salsa. " - alison kessler, candis mclean

Google
I ordered from here via uber eats. I’ve ordered delivery from here before so I already had an idea of what to expect. I was shocked however when my food was delivered and noticed everything was just thrown into a plastic bag, chips included. No container or anything. The burrito was to come with pico de gallo & sour cream and did not. The packaging and quality of the order threw me off and made uneasy to even eat the burrito. Just a waste of money.

Google
A fantastic little Mexican restaurant that is simply serving delicious food. They have tasty, authentic Mexican food in generous portions. The fajitas were perfectly seasoned with fresh veggies, rice, beans, and warm tortillas. The clean, open-concept kitchen showcased their good food handling practices, and the staff were kind and attentive. Friendly service and great food make this spot a must-visit in Philly.

✨ Local Gem ✨ 5/5 highly recommend to everyone. $13.75 for the best burrito around—filling, juicy, delicious 🤤 Friendly staff, fast service and great food. You can’t go wrong!

Google
Food is delicious at a good price. The building is cool, a little oasis on a quiet and atmospheric industrial block. The family running the place are lovely. Service is fast and friendly. They were out of Jarritos tamarindo flavor last time, so they made me a glass of tamarind soda FROM SCRATCH, asking me about how much sugar I wanted and everything, it was perfect. Just a great stop, go eat here and support a local place.

Boy, This Place Is a great place. Apparently a Family Owned venture, here for over 20 years, It was close to the Concert I was going to, so I went in. Being a Day where I wanted something other than meat, I asked and they had an assortment of Meals w/o meat. They served a Wonderful Fresh Pineapple Juice and I ordered the Fish quesadilla. The Juice was Fresh and the Fish came out quickly, and was well grilled (although it wasn't Bulging with Fish). You can even see the guys making your food. Overall I'd recommend this place for a quick Bite to eat Under $20.

Google
I Was In The Area & Had A Taste For Mexican Food. Found This Spot & Decided To Give It A Chance. The Food Was Decent. I Didn’t Like That The Protein Was Already Cooked & All The Cook Did Was Throw It On The Grill For A Lil. Fresh Food Doesn’t Take Long To Cook On The Grill. So, I’m Only Giving It 3 Stars Because Of This.

Google
First time trying El Caracol. Not too bad. I ordered the fajitas with the option for two proteins. So, I decided on chicken and chorizo. Both meats were tender. Overall, the fajitas were good. However, the rice and beans were served cold! I hope they work on that. The Pico de gallo and guacamole were fresh. Not pictured - the mango juice. That was also good and it wasn’t overly sweet. The restaurant is a corner building - small but clean. The staff during the time of my visit was very nice!

Google
I'm baffled by the rave reviews. I was excited to eat here based on them, but everything was squarely mediocre. The al pastor tacos were bland and didn't come with any hot sauce or garnishes. They were also pricey. The staff were nice at least, although they did seem a little inexperienced. I wouldn't recommend eating here.

Yelp
Chinatown was packed so we wandered here. I got the Al Pastor burrito and Pescatarian friend got some fish tacos. Burrito was small but very delicious. Cute small spot. Fun decor and quiet random restaurant on the side. I haven't had good experiences with Mexican food in Philly so far but this place has great prices and I would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Had a chicken quesadilla and a pork platter. The quesadilla didn't have much flavor, the pork and rice were ok, the beans were lousy. Nice people, but won't be returning.

Yelp
This place is a little tucked away hidden gem. Not the biggest dining space for indoor eating, but they also have a small outdoor space. I order the carne asada Plato and it was delicious. Everything was made fresh to order and if you sit at the bar stools by the counter you can see them cook and prep the food. Service was great and the staff was really nice. I would definitely come back. My friend ordered the carnitas Plato that he also said was great but I don't have a pic of it.

Yelp
This is a cute little store on the corner of a pretty lowkey street. I was really excited to try this place because I'm always looking for a yummy taco place. The tacos definitely hit the spot and the marinade on the Al pastor was really delicious. The birria tacos were a bit dry but maybe that was because I took it to go. The prices are a bit higher than I expected, but the service is good and the vibes in the restaurant are really cute and cozy. It's also byob, so I will definitely come back to sit down and eat!

Yelp
This is a small family Mexican restaurant that we stopped at before a show at Franklin Music Hall, just a few blocks away - and El Caracol didn't disappoint! Small seating area inside with tables and counter seating but very comfortable and relaxing. The service was great - we were greeted warmly when we entered and invited to take a seat at a table. The food was fantastic - ordered the chips, guac and salsa to start. Both salsa and guac were fresh and full of flavor and the chips were delicious. We ordered chicken fajitas and carnitas tacos. Fajitas were great and the tacos were amazing!! Carnitas were tender with a perfect light broiled sear on some of the edges - perfect! Came with 2 fresh salsas - a green salsa Fresca and a slightly spicier fresh red salsa and both were fantastic. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to.

Yelp
Great food. Great, speedy service. The ambiance was nice and quiet. I would return and recommend to others. I ordered a taco meal. Great experience all around.

Yelp
I have no complaints about anything! This place needs more recognition, the servings are generous and the price isn't crazy, will definitely eat from here again. Everything was flavorful, tacos weren't dry, consomé had great flavor, chips were salted nicely, queso dip was huge, and both desserts hit the spot after all that!

Yelp
I've been to so many of the Mexican restaurants in Philadelphia and none have even come close to the flavor of the food at el Caracol!!! It has a very homey feel to it and the service was incredibly fast. I will be making myself a regular here. Highly recommend the wet burrito and the tostadas.

Yelp
Sheesh! The food was amazing here! My daughter and I went there for a nice dinner and were pleasantly surprised! We will be returning! The service was friendly and fast! The ambiance was very decorative and beautiful!

Yelp
Phenomenal food, phenomenal service, can't ask for better! Our clinic got lunch from here and it was incredible! Much love and appreciation to El Caracol from all of us at Pain Instacare!

Yelp
Really tasty Mexican food. Restaurant run by small family with fresh ingredients and super reasonable prices. Checks of all my boxes! Everything was delicious with enough non meat offerings for me. Wish it was closer to home!

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food prepared fresh. Speedy Service and great little corner of the street restaurant. Will be coming here again.

Yelp
What a hidden gem. I usually ignore restaurants that have a low number of reviews but this place is fantastic. It's very authentic you know it's good when you are the only American in the place food is made fresh on the grill very quickly. Service is excellent. Food is tremendous. I had beef tacos that were freshly fried on the grill. They were amazing. My wife had their pulled pork play with refried beans and rice. It was so much food that she had to take half of it home. Recommend!

Yelp
Great spot delicious authentic food, nothing like it in the area, will definitely come back for quezabirria tacos
