Latin American-Focused Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week Launches in October | Eater Detroit

"I'm highlighting El Caribeño, a Dominican restaurant taking part in the inaugural Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week (Oct 5–14) during National Hispanic Heritage Month, and it will present traditional, affordable Dominican dishes that are already available on its regular menu." - Brenna Houck

I happened to catch El Caribeno having just started opening for breakfast on Sunday morning. This is an absolutely do not miss this place. The owners are always present and it is family run. The breakfast torta was absolutely phenomenal. You would think that there are only a few ways to make bacon eggs and cheese but these breakfast sandwiches are next level. Bacon is thick cut and the eggs were perfectly cooked. Also in our order was an Empa Del Campo that was an absolute sweet and savory with a fantastic balance. The restaurant is fantastically clean and has a nice open and airy decor. It was great experience and we will be going back again.

The best "tembleque" I've ever had! If you want true quality Puertorican cuisine, this is the place to go! Will be coming back! Just writing this review makes my mouth water. 100% recommended!!!

We were super excited to try El Caribeño after seeing so many great reviews on TikTok! I’d tried arroz con gandules at a friend’s house before and absolutely loved it, so we couldn’t wait to see what this spot had to offer. We ordered the chicharrón de pollo with a side of arroz con gandules, the carne frita with mofongo, a few empanadillas de pastelón, and the queso frito. We arrived at almost 12pm, but the pernil still wasn’t available yet — we were told it would take about another hour, which was a bit disappointing since that’s one of the dishes we were most excited to try. The queso frito we got didn’t look anything like the photos I’ve seen online (not sure what that’s about 😅), but the biggest issue was how incredibly salty the mofongo was. It was so salty it actually hurt to eat. It honestly tasted like eating a spoonful of straight salt. We did bring this up to our waitress, and to their credit, they replaced it with a side of arroz con gandules for my mom, which we appreciated. When we mentioned the saltiness, the waitress said Puerto Rican food is “heavily seasoned.” I totally get that… but to me, “heavily seasoned” means flavorful herbs, spices, garlic… not just salt! Also, this place was NOT CHEAP, I don’t mind paying for good food, but this food just seemed to miss the mark. Some things were tasty, but overall, the saltiness, missing pernil, and the price took away from the experience for us. I hope this was just an off day because I really wanted to love this place…

Que Delicia!!! Lets just say Im so happy to come back and visit. Food was amazing literally brought me back to the Island. They had catered my wedding back in 2021 and all my guests loved the food. Today I brought a dear friend of mines that is moving out of state and it was a great place to catch up and enjoy the food. Thank you we had great service.

I placed an order for what was supposed to be a tray of pernil with white rice and beans, family-style, but instead received four small individual portions with the rice mixed with sauce, which is not what I ordered. To make things worse, I was charged $20 for just six slices of tostones. The total came out to $100, and the food provided is not even enough to properly serve one adult per portion—let alone be considered family-style. The portions are far too small and absolutely do not reflect the value paid. This was disappointing and not what I expected. I’m requesting a refund or resolution for the incorrect and misrepresented order.

First stop visiting once I landed in texas for the first time, comin from NY/PR & food did not disappoint, everything was amazing, I had Arroz con Gandules, Yuca Fries, Pastellilo de Carne, Alcapurria de Guineo y Vanilla Flan & all were on point! Love the Puerto Rican art that was around the Restaurant too. Worth trying and would be a spot saved to come back to. 🇵🇷
