A long-running, cash-only truck with a deep roster of Mexico City–style tacos and winter tamales. Consistently recommended in the Idaho Statesman’s taco coverage, it’s a Boise rite of passage for straightforward street fare.

This is approx my 6th taco truck to review in the Boise area as it was close to home and it opened at 10:00 am which was a plus. I ordered the carnitas and the Al Pastor street tacos and enjoyed sitting outside on the lively pick nick tables. They had then ready pretty fast and brought them on a plastic tray which was a nice idea. The carnitas taco was very tender but it needed a bit more spice and crispness and the Al Pastor street tacos were the best I have tried so far. The man and the lady were very pleasant and the price point was 2.50 per taco so they were very reasonably priced. Go support this lovely taco truck here in the Boise area.

This is definitely my go to spot when I'm in this part of town. Tacos are really good with the Al Pastor, Carnitas and Pescado being my personal favourites. The owners of the shop are also super friendly and efficient with their service. It is cash only though so make sure to bring some dollars for a great feed. Highly recommend!

Google
Love their food, no complaints there. But if you like gambling on if your order is correct this is the place for you. Do not leave without checking your order. It’s happened enough times I have changed from the person who recommends it to never wanting to go back. Sad to say.

Google
Always 10/10 only good Mexican food in Idaho. I lived in OC/LA my whole life and grew up with real authentic Mexican food and this is thee only place in Idaho

Jazhiel Salomon

Google
Food is so good, it is far from our home but is worth the trip. The only thing i wish, is they had someone alse at the front counter. The young girl has no simpathy at all for costumers. She does not care a bit about being polite. That brings down the whole experience. . Is not that she had a bad day. That is every single time we come to this place. Sorry but, she is my only complaint.

Matt Shockey

Google
El Chavo lost a long time customer today. I showed up 15 minutes before close and was told that they were no longer taking orders for the day. I then asked “Why, are you closed?” and the cashier said “we’re about to be.” So I said “Then if you’re still open for another 15 minutes, why can’t you serve me?” No answer was given, just deadpan indifference. I understand if a business gets short-staffed, runs out of food, has an equipment failure, etc. But to just tell a long time customer “We can’t take your order” and *refuse* to give an explanation is very poor service. El Don Tacos y Mas, which is down the street, never treats people this way and will now have my exclusive business as far as neighborhood taco trucks go.

Google
It was one of the best tacos I’ve ever had. And their Horchata was sooo goood. I waited a bit long (about 20 mins) but it was worth it.

Google
I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed this place before and I don’t know why. It’s near my house, so eating there could be a matter of convenience, but it just isn’t, because I’d drive an hour to eat it! Very fresh and consistently delicious, El Chavo delights every single time. My only complaint is that they are cash only and I NEVER have cash. Probably good or I’d give them all of my money. I highly recommend El Chavo, if you haven’t tried it, do it asap. The shrimp salad is amazing, the fish tacos are my favorite, and I’ve heard great things about the pork tacos. Worth every cent and very friendly owners. 10/10 every time.

Yelp
While visiting Idaho, we stayed in Boise and McCall and came across a taco food truck on Yelp. It's a cash-only place with outdoor seating, and there's an Albertsons nearby if you need an ATM. We liked it so much we went twice. The owner is really nice. We tried different street tacos, and our favorites were the shrimp, fish, and tripa. We also had their hot batts, which were good, and they gave us Aqua de Jamaica (not on the menu), which we loved.

Yelp
Amazing place to have tacos! The food truck is located outside of a house where they served the food. They have tables on the side that you can sit and enjoy your tacos. Overall, is a great place to have tacos with good service and food!
google avatar

Leah W.

Yelp
Pretty good tacos! The horchata was a little chalky but I really enjoyed the rice, tacos, and salsa. Liked the outdoor seating area as well.

Allyssa W.

Yelp
Great tacos! I had Al pastor, adobada, asada, and chorizo. All delicious! Their hot sauce is awesome. We tried all of them and wow, they bring the heat! Decently priced!

Yelp
Hard-working owners that are very friendly. However, they can't be there every day -- all day -- and so it varies between staff as to friendliness and ability to make things without meat. If you want anything vegetarian, be ready to say exactly what you want on it -- when there's no meat and you didn't specify exactly what you want on it, it is sometimes a very lightweight item for expensive price. When I order the Carne Asada, everything's great though.

Yelp
After a year of living in Boise, finally found a place with consistently great Mexican food. Have been here about three different times, tried the gordita, tacos (chicken, chicharrón, carnitas, buche and adobada), and the quesadilla. Highly recommend, fast and friendly service. This may sound weird but I appreciate the fact that they don't deliver but you can call ahead. Everything tasted hand made and fresh, salsas are not dumbed down. You will be hard pressed to find better mexican food in this area.

Yelp
El chavo always has quick and good service and very yummy food. I always order the taco plate which is very good.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
Food was 4 stars, service was 1. Food was good, authentic Mexican. We got some tacos and carne asada and the portion size was good for the price. Cash only. Nice area to sit and eat under some trees next to the road. But the girl who took our order was fairly unpleasant. Seemed very unhappy to take our order and deal with us. Probably won't be returning.
google avatar

Yelp
food is amazing, i'm from southern cali so this place totally hits the spot when it comes to authentic mexican food! the people who work there are super nice too! prices are reasonable!
google avatar

Candy H.

Yelp
Ownership is friendly and the food is great. Best lengua tacos around! We usually call ahead our order and it's usually about 15-20 min max for tacos and burrito.

Johnny T.

Yelp
Best taco truck in town! Appreciate y'all! Slaps errrrrrrrtrip! Plus they are a beautiful family.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
I was introduced to El Chavo by one of my friends and I'm so glad he did! They are a taco stand that serves authentic Mexican food takeout style and in generous helpings. I usually order a carnitas burrito and adobada taco combo which is $14-15 and includes a can of soda. I also like to order an horchata which is $3-5 and comes in 2 sizes. Other fillings include al pastor (pork), cabeza (cow head), chorizo, asada (steak), pollo (chicken), and chicharron (pork skin). They also have tortas, enchiladas, quesadillas, and tostadas to name a few. I will certainly be returning soon with an empty stomach and recommend them trying them out! Thank you, El Chavo. :)
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
This place is legit. The Cabeza was cooked right. They definitely know how to make tacos. I would highly recommend this place for tacos and burritos.
google avatar

Tara K.

Yelp
I cannot believe the level of deliciousness that came out of this taco truck. Probably some of the best Mexican street tacos I've ever had. And husband said the same thing about his torta. Then the shrimp cocktail! Holy smokes it was so yummy! Don't miss this place if you're a taco snob like me! You will be happy with the food. I promise.

Yelp
El Chavo is popular among Boiseans, especially those who live around Vista Ave, and for good reason too. Tucked away behind a tiny house, El Chavo serves up some of the most delicious Mexican street food in Ada County while maintaining reasonable prices and sticking to authenticity. I'm giving my Carne Asada burrito ($7.50) a solid 5/5. The dang thing weighed nearly a pound. It was stuffed so full it fell apart as I was eating it. Thankfully, they provide plastic forks at no extra cost. The meat, rice and beans provided just the right amount of flavor. I may have died and came back to life. Not an exaggeration - it was that freaking good! I also appreciated the side of grilled onions and jalapeño that I added to a couple bites. I probably should have saved half of it. I was so stuffed I didn't even need dinner that evening. All for $7.50? You can't really beat that in the city!

Mariah W.

Yelp
We live close and we are so lucky. This is one of our favorite spots! The food is amazing and also very consistent. My go tos are the shrimp tacos, carne asada & chicken burrito. Their green salsa is sooo yummy! A must try!

Nicholas D.

Yelp
The young gentleman who is part owner with his father-in-law is extremely aggressive and cocky and rude. He is the one with neck tattoos. They messed up multiple things with our large order, did not include multiple things with our large order, and when I called to see what happened, he very angrily shouted at me over the phone and said I have cameras you can come back and look at the cameras, I gave you all your food, I packed it up personally. I then said is this how you want to handle this? And then he insinuated I was lying and trying to get free food. It was ridiculous. I've never been treated this way ever by any establishment. I then drove 20 minutes back to this trailer that they call a taco truck, and the rude boy said, I checked my cameras, here are your missing food items. No apology, no comment about how he immediately called me a liar. It was so awful to be treated this way. I will never go back here again, and I will tell all of my family and friends to not go here, ever.

Yelp
Shame on my previous, fellow Californians, both Alta and Baja who have said that they cannot find good Mexican food around the Treasure Valley. A shocking number of reviews that claim a Mexican restaurant here or there is authentic when they show loads on gobs of gooey yellow cheese. Shame, shame for not getting out of your comfort zone and doggedly promoting places that smother their food with gobs of yellow cheese. THERE IS NO YELLOW CHEESE IN MEXICO. STOP EATING AT PLACES WHERE THERE IS YELLOW CHEESE. Behind a little house at 3940 W Overland Rd, Boise, is parked a perfectly fine food truck that can boast a great Mexican kitchen with an authentic Mexican mother cooking. That is the secret to good Mexican food - mama. El Chavo (the kid)Taqueria has been around for quite some time at different locales. It has an extensive menu of meat fillings, certainly one of your favorites is on the menu. The authentic Mexican mother inside the truck can make anything you can imagine as your favorite dish. Service is fast and English-speaking friendly for those who need it. They have a breakfast menu to include a breakfast burrito. I tasted one and loved it. I can imagine that all the items are authentic because they are made with a mother's love. The prices are more than fair, even cheap like a full sized carnitas burrito with rice and "frijoles de la olla" (beans from the pot) for $7. Can't go wrong with that pricing. Plenty of on-street and off-street parking. Patio furnture creates an al fresco dining area in the front yard under the shade trees. Boycott yellow cheese, switch to a kitchen run by a Mexican mother and your problems with bad Mexican food will be solved.

Yelp
Amazing food truck that's a hidden gem! Street tacos are authentic and delicious. The owner and chef was super nice and you get a ton of food.
google avatar

Kalyn S.

Yelp
First timers today- husband ordered breakfast burrito and I ordered the carne asada burrito- SO full of flavor, high quality and fresh products used. Highly recommend- and loved the cooked onions - only downside, next time I'll request no lettuce in my burrito.

Nikki T.

Yelp
We are visiting from Hawaii and were looking for some really great places to try that are local to Idaho. This place showed up as highly rated, so we decided to try it out. It did not disappoint. We loved the food so much, we came back for more. If you're ever in Boise Idaho and looking for something to try, this place is amazing. If we ever get the chance to come back for another vacation here, we will definitely be back to El Chavo.

Yelp
This place is Exceptional. The pride in what they serve shows in the food. I went for the first time yesterday & turned around today for a second run. I ordered the taco & tostada combo. I order two different meats yesterday and today. The chicken was moist, yet had the fine, crispy edges one can only get when cooked on the grill. The abodada was nicely spiced and the asada was rich in seasoning. The shells on the taco were soft and not at all greasy. The shell of the tostada was lightly crisped with not trace of oil. The sides were done right, rice was fluffy & the beans plump and not overcooked. They also have a "diablo" sauce one can order for .50 as a side that comes in red or green. Not over the top hot, but the red was thick, smooth and nicely warm. They serve a thick green sauce with your meal that is just too good to be true, freshly made with a tart kick. The service is "with a smile" & they bring the food to your outside table. I

Yelp
Food was good but service was iffy. She looked at me like it was a bother to make food lol.

Yelp
Ok I have changed my tune after close to 10 visits here. They are so consistent everytime!! I love street style tacos and have tried many all over Boise. Hands down they have the best flavor! My favorite are the pastor and asada tacos however I recommend you try what ever appeals to you, you won't be disappointed. They offer great sauces as well as sauteed onions and a huge hot pepper. The staff is super friendly and you can even phone your order in ahead of time. Even if you order on the spot they get stuff out in a timely manner. They have a covered eating area outside if you choose to eat on site. *Tip: They only accept cash so come prepared.
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Fantastic tacos. Cash only. My son and I had a brief trip to visit Boise for family, but this tiny food truck sticks out as one of the great meals we had. I saw some others ordering the sopes and my only regret was not ordering one of those too. The al pastor hit the spot.
google avatar

Bryce L.

Yelp
Chavo doesn't miss. I eat here at least once a week because it's so consistently good that it's hard to waste my money elsewhere. Call it in ahead of time so that's ready when you get there.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
This place is well loved by the locals. It's a taco truck They have great food, outdoor seating and an indoor seating area with A/C. I had the quesadilla with a taco and it was great! On the taco I had lengua, which is a nice option that they offer. The quesadilla is more like a large taco and delicious! Wife had the enchiladas. Combo orders came with a soda. Great food and friendly service. Try this place when in the area.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
El Chavo Taqueria offers some legitimately great Mexican food, especially their tacos and burritos. Their red and green salsa is solid, as well. I have found that as someone who frequently travels for business that Mexican food, at least what I have found, has been the most consistent, that you can find good Mexican in most places. This place is definitely a great place and hard to beat the value. I definitely recommend here and offer it four stars () as my rating.
google avatar

Christine M.

Yelp
great street taco truck! food, service and not far from airport! need Guava soda but other wise street tacos are amazing! price is right too!

Karen M.

Yelp
Había tenido malas experiencias en Boise comiendo en restaurantes mexicanos pero he encontrado las tres B, BUENO, BONITO y BARATO. Súper recomendable la comida está muy rica el trato amable y económico. Seguramente será un lugar al que volver.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good food but kinda pricey for street tacos. Lady in window was really nice.....

Yelp
FINALLY!!!! We found this hidden gem today after coming from California and being disappointed at every Mexican food place we've tried for the past year and half. We've tried restaurants, food trucks, you name it and everywhere else has been a disgrace from dried out "meat" to basically a bean and rice burrito that is called a "carne asada" burrito. Like where tf is meat?! I'm so excited we found this place!! We'll probably be going by here all the time and always keeping some cash on hand for it. The long painful journey of looking for anyone who can make a decent authentic Mexican meal is now over. There Diablo sauce is . Honestly every single of their salsa I tried is the best!

Manny M.

Yelp
Great tacos! Tried Al Pastor, Carne Asada, and Chicken, and they were all very good! Horchata was also ridiculously good. Was in Boise for 3 days, and ate here 3 times . Also friendly service.

Madison C.

Yelp
I ordered a tostada and asked if it came with beans, expecting refried beans. They just put regular beans on my tostada? Everything was soggy and they grilled the onions. I was expecting Mexican food and it felt like my white mother could have done it better. There was also just a single slice of a tomato. This just made no sense to me.
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
Great carne asada burrito! The flavor is always on point, it's not greasy. Super tasty
google avatar

Katie Z.

Yelp
Popped on for a quick bite before heading to the airport. Wow! We got the 5 taco combo and a sope (carnitas) both arrive hot and delicious, with plenty of toppings and fresh cilantro. The sauces offered at the table had tons of flavor and were a perfect accent to our food. Being from PA, the closest thing we have to authentic is Taco Bell, so I'm not expert, but El Chavo was definitely a fantastic find!
google avatar

Ali T.

Yelp
The street tacos are SO good! One of the best taco trucks I've been to. The chicken and carne asada tacos are great and the chorizo quesadilla was beyond delicious! It had sliced avocado, fresh tomatoes, onions, & cilantro. Would highly recommend checking this place out- you won't regret it!

Yelp
This is Part II of a Taco-Truck-Taco hunting expedition that took place tonight. My wife and I had just completed Part I at a different business establishment, and when we were, we were not satisfied (meaning we didn't eat enough tacos yet, and were still hungry). Scouring the Yelp reviews for Taco Trucks in the area led us to El Chavo Taqueria. I am so happy that things ended up the way they did. This place is really good. My wife and I placed identical orders for two tacos each; one chicken and one port. After we ordered, the cook dropped our meat on the stove, and the sound of sizzling deliciousness and the scent of yum-yum-yum meandered into our senses, and we knew we were in for a treat. It took a bit for us to get the tacos (like four minutes, tops), but when we got them everything was so, so fresh. The tortillas were hot, and the meat was still steaming. The pork was my favorite, but my wife felt the chicken was better. Either way, we both love both our tacos. The simplicity of Taco-Truck style tacos, and the freshness of the meat and ingredients made this really good. Their hot sauce was flavorful too. Very friendly service. Affordable prices. They have a seating area where you can sit in the shade. I love these kind of places, and we will definitely return to El Chavo. [ I have a friend who is addicted to drinking brake fluid. He tells us not to worry, and claims he can stop anytime he wants. ]

Yelp
I keep finding some great Mexican eateries in Boise and none of them a chain job. El Chave is a food truck located at Overland and Pershing, just west of Rockie's Diner and on the same side of the street. The tacos are fantastic and only $1.25 each. Doubled wrapped in corn tortillas, they are tasty. I had carnitas and chicken and they were both tasty. The couple that run the truck are friendly and they include lime slices, grilled onions and jalapeño with the meal. There's tent seating next to the truck and they have bottles of two different salsas that they bring to you. They were both good, as well.
google avatar

Todd L.

Yelp
If you are looking for some very tasty street tacos in Boise, you need to check out El Chavo. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for a few tacos. The truck is parked next to a house with plenty of street parking (if you are willing to walk) along with a couple of spots at the house. I am giving the tacos a 4 star review while seating is getting a 2. I ordered pollo, carnitas, el pastor, asada, and adobada. I recall the total bill being $12 for 8 tacos. Very affordable. The tacos came with 3 different salsas as well. The tortillas were nice and soft for all the tacos. All the meats had good flavor but were a bit overcooked. The seating consist of three picnic benches with all three in not great condition. I do understand that seating is not the priority. I will be grabbing more tacos in the future for sure. Do note that this truck is cash only. I would reccomend El Chavo to anybody looking for some street tacos!!! Cheers Always!
google avatar

Kat R.

Yelp
This is a phenomenal taco truck. The food was flavorful, good portions, and reasonable prices. I'm only sad we hadn't visited them sooner.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Whenever a new taco truck opens up I have to try it,for my palette El Chavo still serves the best street tacos in town.
google avatar

Quenia G.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been to this place but would 10/10 recommend if you're in the area! The tacos were delicious and definitely checked all the boxes. Not much to say; authentic, affordable and totally worth it!
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
I have been on the search for 2.5 years to find good Mexican food in Boise! This was hands down the most authentic food I have had AND their salsa is fantastic! I got their Carne Asada burrito and the chicken taco and I was blown away how good it was, so flavorful! The lady working in the truck is the sweetest too and was nice when I asked for extra salsa! I came back the very next day and got the carne asada burrito again and it was exactly as delicious as it was the night before lol

Todd E.

Yelp
This is the best food truck street taco my wife and I have ever had. Nice selection of entrees, authentic Mexican dishes and cold sodas. We have been here numerous times and the food quality is always spot on.
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
Delicious with lots of flavor. Love the tacos here and the breakfast burrito is ok. There was so much egg that I really didn't taste the chorizo. The lady is really nice and sweet, overall I would come and eat here again when it's nice and sunny.
google avatar

Sam F.

Yelp
Being from Southern California it has been hard to find Mexican food as good as I'm used to. The search is over. This is easily the best Mexican food in Boise.
google avatar

Roland H.

Yelp
You know you are at the right place when you eat amongst Mexicans Their food is fantastic!
