The Restaurants of Netflix’s ‘Ugly Delicious’ | Eater

"David Chang heads to South Philly Barbacoa in the “tacos” episode to learn how Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller opened their acclaimed Philadelphia restaurant. Since filming the show, South Philly Barbacoa merged with its sister restaurant El Compadre. You can still find the same tacos and other Mexican specialties from that restaurant at this new address." - Manami Takashina

We love eating here!! Staff is super nice and the food is amazing! Love the fresh salsa and chips and also the queso! We usually get the nachos for dinner…beef and cheese, and beef, beans and cheese! So delicious!! Would definitely recommend coming here!

On Monday afternoon 12-23-2024, at El Compadre restaurant in Bedford, my son and I had lunch there. I had a Brandon's Big beef Burrito and fries. My son had the Texas Style Quesadilla . He could not eat all of his meal so he put his leftover in one of their styrofoam boxes to take home. All Monday night my son was sick with diarrhea and an upset stomach, said he never wants to go back there again, but I felt fine. Then yesterday evening I ate the rest of my son's leftover texas meal. What a dummy, I never made the connection that it might have been his mexican food from the restaurant. And now 12 - 13 hours later, I am sick with gas, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and puking. They call this food poisoning. Probably Salmonella, Campylobacter, or E Coli bacteria from their food. I am going to ER if I dont get better in the next couple hours. Posting below two photos of the food order from this restaurant that made us both sick. It tasted fine, but has given us food poisoning 12 hours later.

The server was rude. She gave us the appetizer at the same time our meals came out. Still, another dinner was missing. That took another five minutes. She didn't come back to see if we needed things and we did. Margarita, cheese, etc. When she came back at the end of the meal and asked if everything was ok, I told her it wasn't. I told her that she didn't come back to see how we were doing. That is when she started her attitude. Then the manager comes to the table, looks me in the eye and goes "are you ok, senorita?!" . He didn't greet the table. He just came right at me with his smirking. It really was an experience that could have been totally different had the manager and server showed a little compassion and treated us like customers

Best hole in the wall Mexican place I’ve ever had. Mexican is my all-time favorite food and this is probably the best Birria tacos I’ve ever had

Taco Tuesday! Good price for tacos. Chicken was very tasty. Ground beef Taco was just kinda blah..

The food was absolutely terrible. This isn't Mexican food. Throwing tomato paste on everything doesn't make it Mexican. It makes it soggy. The worst yet. To my viewers, please go somewhere else unless you like unauthentic Mexican food. And the charro beans have balogna..Frfr

Google
Food came out along with many gnats. Two people ordered tortilla soup and found a total of 5 fries in the soup. The frijole soup had bologna and hot hogs cut up with some weird chewy gelatin stuff in it. There was no broth, just thick bean juice. The waiter came up and asked how the bean soup was and we said it wasn’t what we expected and he said okay and walked away. Another person ordered the gringo special. It came with steak, rice, and fries. The meat was a different off-white color and was tangy and salty. Within 30 mins all that was thrown up.

The food and drinks were great as usual. And Alexis is always great. She is the best server. She is always right there to get what you need, very attentive 🙂

Yelp
Food, Desserts, and Drinks are all amazing! My favorite thing is the mixed fajitas. Everything is a good price, and the service is always great. I can always count on one of the locations to have a familiar waitress! This is my go to Mexican food spot, way better than casa brava!! Go support them. They pour so much into the community here as well. The entire restaurant is good vibes even if it is busy from time to time!

Yelp

Yelp
First time at El Compadre in Bedford. We absolutely loved the food and service! The chips and salsa were amazing. My wife had steak fajitas and she cleaned up her entire plate (not normal)! I had the camarones a la mexicana and it was delicious! Highly recommend it!!

Yelp
We went down to celebrate my spouse's birthday with my sister and her husband. The wait staff was gracious and helpful. The food was delicious and warm. The chips were authentic. The chain is a southern indiana delicacy worth the travel and the try.

Yelp
We are not from this area - saw this restaurant near the Walmart in Bedford, IN. It was some of the best Mexican food we've had. The place was busy but the staff was amazing. I had the carne asada which was not the paper thin steak you get most places. It was a nice real steak cooked medium rare. Our waiter, Jesus, was also great!

Yelp
Our experience was amazing! Our waiter was super attentive and polite ... and the food was delicious! ... my wife ordered the Molcajete meal and we were surprised by the amount of food for the price, she and I both agreed that two people could easily have enjoyed the one meal. Overall, I would highly recommend dining at El Compadre and look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
I get takeout about every week, they always do a good job. Fast. Hot. Correct. Every single time.

Yelp
I ordered La Playa, the Fish and shrimp were cooked perfectly and the garlic parm sauce was unbelievable, comes with a side of veggies. Great welcoming staff at a fair price. I highly recommend if in the area.

Yelp
I'm so surprised by how bad the reviews are. Considering this is in Bedford they have some decent actual Mexican options. The Americanized Mexican choices are good too. My favorite is the shrimp and rice or the chimichanga. My husband loves the traditional carne asada tacos and their pork tamales. Great prices and huge portions. Good drink specials on Thursday's too.

Yelp
Like the place. Nice atmosphere and good food. Plenty of Mexican food selections. However, you can get some basic American food as well. Friendly servers.

Yelp
Ate here on December 26. The food was so bland and boring that there was no taste to it at all. We eat here often but won't be back until they get a different cook. What a waste of an evening dining out.

Yelp
Not enough stars to give this place. One of the bed rest in town. Would recommend to anyone who visits French lick or Lawrence county

Kenna S.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. Food was not done when we were told to arrive. When we finally got the food and left over half of it was wrong and we were lacking a bag of chips. I called back to tell them to have it ready and we arrived at the time we were told again only to have to wait yet again. The very unprofessional lady with green hair told us we could not have more chips that we asked for even though we were shorted a bag and the ones we had were severely stale. She made me walk back out to the car to get the wrong food to prove it to her that it was wrong. When she finally got the right food she all but threw it at us. Other staff told us that they did not have a manager present to talk to us. The other half of our other food was no good by the time we got home. Do not recommend. We will never be back.

Yelp
This has been a great substitute for Casa Brava. Each item of theirs that I've tried during my most recent visits have all been very good. The staff is very quick to get to your table and are very welcoming. The decor could use some work, but that doesn't take away from how good the food tastes.

Yelp
Good food, but the Tom Collins I ordered was lackluster. Not sure what recipe they use for it but it doesn't taste like the classic.

Yelp
There are several Mexican restaurants in the area but this one is the best. They are cheaper and their food is better. They have been in Paoli and Mitchel for a while and just opened in Bedford. Give them a try!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I do a lot of work in Lawrence County...Bedford specifically. We chose this place for lunch over Penn Station. The food is pretty good for your every day Mexican joint. The menu is extensive and they offer different variety such as burgers and fries and what not. The service....sucks. we got greeted by a young girl, no welcoming...just asked how many and stormed off to a table then threw the menus down and walked away. Our server was really sweet, but very quiet and didn't seem well trained. We had to ask for everything or leave our empty glasses at the edge of the table. It wasn't a busy time and I'm disappointed. The price for how much food we got was the best part, which is why I'm leaving 3 stars. We MIGHT give it another try some day....but it'll be a while before I return to this location.

Yelp
I have only been to this restaurant 3 times. The last experience we had is certainly our last. It was a Friday night, so they were busy. It took several minutes to get a table, which was fine and totally understandable. We weren't ready with out order like 2 minutes after being seated, so the waitress proceeds to ignore us for the next 15 minutes. When she finally got around to us, we ordered and she clearly could not understand us. We pointed to the things we wanted on the menu because conversation was difficult. We ordered 2 meals and an appetizer as well. We waited another 20+ minutes for our food to arrive. The waitress only stopped by once to get us more chips and salsa. We got the appetizer with the meal, and it was NOT what we ordered. We ordered loaded fries and got fries with just cheese and chicken I guess? We were so hungry and frustrated at this point that we just ate it. Our meals were correct, for what it's worth. The waitress did not check on us again, so our drinks were empty halfway through the meal. We had to ask for our check. We were very displeased by the horrible service. The food is mediocre. More Americanised than taco bell! I wouldn't recommend. Casa brava is definitely better!!

Yelp
First of all..this is NOT a Mexican restaurant! The wait was long and the food was just awful. The waitress was just too busy so we waited forever. Some lady got our drinks which we asked for diet cokes and we got two flat cokes, and then enchiladas and a taco salad. I barely had 2 bites and I was done. It tasted awful! It was so bad that we asked for our check and left. If I could rate it less than one star I would! I bet they have great chicken wings tho.
