"Throughout the pandemic, the married couple has been volunteering at the People’s Kitchen, a mutual aid organization led by South Philly Barbacoa and the 215 People’s Alliance. It operates out of Miller and Martinez’s former restaurant El Compadre, serving 200 free meals a day made by a rotating lineup of chefs, with help from students at the Careers Through Culinary Arts Program." - Rachel Vigoda

"El Compadre was an Italian Market torta shop run by Cristina Martinez and Ben Miller. The restaurant was taken over by the couple in early 2017 after the previous owner, Martinez's son, passed away. They operated El Compadre along with their other restaurant, South Philly Barbacoa, until El Compadre's closure. The venue is set to become 1149, a cooperatively owned restaurant." - Rachel Vigoda

"El Compadre, opened by Isaías Berriozabal-Martinez in 2016, became the new home for South Philly Barbacoa after his passing. The combination of the two restaurants led to the closure of South Philly Barbacoa’s 11th Street location, which is now occupied by Mike’s BBQ." - Rachel Vigoda

Very delicious chicken mole torta and chorizo potato torta. Usually comes with a serving of tortilla chipa with guac or some fruits, which is a very nice of them. This is a small place with a friendly atmosphere, would highly recommend to anyone looking for a quick bite!

El compadre came highly recommended from a local shop owner and it did not disappoint! On Sunday morning they offer family-style taco platter and single tacos. After ordering the family-style, I realized the value was enormous and the quality was beyond excellent. It was a mixture of lamb and pork with all the accoutrements that you see in the photo. We also ordered a coffee which had added Cardiman and some other magical spices possibly unicorn dust. The best meal I’ve ever had in Philadelphia.

The tacos are great, but they're also absurdly over priced. The juices and horchatas help round out one of the better Mexican meals you'll have in Philadelphia. However weekends are the only time to go, because they only make subpar tortas that are overpriced.

This is the home of the great chef Cristina Martinez and the best Mexican food in Philadelphia. Tortas and guisados are the standard fare here. The Mexican style coffee is great too. Chef Cristina is a very thoughtful and caring person who can be seen working and speaking with customers at almost any time that they are open. A can't miss if you're visiting Philly or find yourself in the Italian market area.

Very good for Mexican takeout. Limited menu holds it back. I had heard fantastic things about the food but was slightly disappointed. Had I heard nothing I would have been happier with it, so that's not their fault. I just didn't see it as the be all end all of Mexican in Philly. We have a few other places just as good in my opinion.

Must get the lamb barbacoa tacos. Love a spot that just serves 2/3 dishes.

I love this restaurant ! It's one of my favorite place now, and the food is amazing and authentic. I couldn't get enough of it!! And the lady was so nice, I wish I knew Spanish so I can tell her how much of an inspiration she brings us all. You have to come here! Her restaurant feels like you're at a home, and make sure you get their orange juice cause it's 100% natural taste and deliciousssss! me encanta!
