Never had mofongo this way before but I think Hubby will ask that we make at home this way in the future. The meat was stuffed inside the mofongo and the whole thing was served in the most flavorful broth I have ever had in a Puerto Rican restaurant. The Bacalaitos were on point too!

I had really high expectations for this place since I saw lots of good reviews that said that it was one of the best PR food spots the Bay Area. Ambiance was nice. Service was bad but food was worse. We got the tostones de carne and the pollo al horno. We even paid extra to make the tostones “rocky style” because the waitress said it was better and they were nothing but bland, no taste whatsoever and the plantain was hard and tasteless. As for the pollo, I really was hoping I’d be amazing since it said that it had won an award somewhere for best dish in the county, but was extremely disappointed. I’m aware the portions during lunch are smaller but this plate was TINY. I was not expecting it at all specially for the high price. The chicken was alright, not super tender and very minimal flavor. And the sides (beans and plantain) very bland as well, it was our first time trying plantain and were really let down. The only thing I really enjoyed was the coco soda. Overall, it was a bad experience, as Mexicans we were really exited to try PR food for the first time, but this place really wasn’t the move.

One of my favorite restaurants in Santa Rosa! Always so delicious. I usually get the pollo al horno and I decided to try the tacos today. Yum!

Found this place to take my fiance to enjoy a Valentine's dinner of his culture, since I don't cook Puerto Rican food. It was worth the hour and a half drive! Food was authentically prepared. Took our taste buds back to family cooking and reminded us of places we have eaten at in Puerto Rico. Very well priced. Adding to the island vibe that's on point, with decor and music. Don't forget to have a sangria. Wepa! Update of my review years later! April 27, 2025 we still love this place. Sol was amazing as our server and bartender. Her Coconut Pineapple Sangrias are so refreshing and tasty. My Camarones all Criollo tasted like home. Chicharrón de pollo will not disappoint. Cheers!

Pollo al Horno was probably the best dish I’ve had In a long time. Really great food full of fresh ingredients! Amazing!

This is our third time coming here, a 2 hour drive, one time I brought my mother who was visiting from 🇵🇷. She was impressed with the taste and we've always loved it. Today our empanadillos came out cold, and we noticed the table next to us had the same problem, otherwise the service has been outstanding. We requested a new one, it came out hot and was delicious. We'll be back again👏🏻

Google
Awesome experience through and through at El Coqui! I traveled all the way from Boston to try this place and it absolutely delivered!!! The best plantains I’ve ever had From the moment I walked in I felt welcomed with open arms and the love poured through every bite! If you’re in the area do yourself a favor and pop on by El Coqui

Yelp
I was at my best friend's birthday party and El Coqui Puerto Rican Cuisine catered her party. The food was excellent. The caterers were very professional and friendly. I would hire them to cater my parties with their delicious cuisine

Yelp
I love Puerto Rican food and was excited to give El Coqui another try. I had their jibaritos many years ago which are SO good. This time around, my friend and I opted for the pollo al horno plate. It comes with an oven-stewed chicken, rice, beans, plantains, and "salad". We dined in and had no issues being seated. The food came out pretty fast. The chicken is super tender and flavorful. It was definitely my favorite part of the dish. The beans are also delicious. I opted for the white rice but wish I had gone with the yellow (next time!). It did taste like it might've been out for some time which was my least favorite part of the dish. The salad is just a few slices of avocado and tomato, but it adds a fresh bite to the dish. I opted for the savory plantains which were pretty good! I do wish there was sauce to dip them in as they can feel a little dry. Service was friendly, but I do wish our waitress had stopped by after bringing out the food to refill our waters. Overall, I had a good experience and would recommend stopping by!

Yelp

Yelp
4.5 stars considering the cost The food is simply amazing. I'm typing this after several months and I can still taste the rich flavors of the rice. We've came here a couple of times and it's worth flying to Santa Rosa just for this. I really enjoy the plantan sandwich, but their pulled pork is great. Infact everything is great.

Yelp
Stopped here for dinner on a trip per someone's recommendation. The food and drinks were good but still left something to be desired. I had the avocado sandwich and pineapple soda. We also got a side of guacamole which was nice and the plantain chips were good too. It wasn't too crowded when we went but I could see there being a nice atmosphere when it's busier. Would like to come back to try something new sometime!

Yelp
(TAKEOUT) My friend recommended this place highly as he is from Puerto Rico himself as it has dishes from the motherland that he can't find anywhere else in the Bay. Commuting from the East Bay to the North bay was an adventure, went during an unexpected rainy day so sadly they didn't have outdoor dining, bummer cause I brought my dog with me since it is a 2 hour drive. Got myself Canoa con Carne Molida for takeout while my friends ate inside. Love the dish but felt the portions were a bit small for takeout and price. Had like a solid 3 spoonful of beans and super tiny salad. The rice was delicious but there wasn't that much as the protein pretty much had to take over the space so the rice around it is pretty all you got. By the time I finished, I was left still hungry. My friends ordered similar dishes and portioning is definitely way better for dine in. Service was chill, the guy who helped me was descriptive on what the dishes were so no complaints on service. Will definitely have to come back again and hopefully dine-in as that seems to be the best option.

Yelp
I love small hole in the wall restaurants like El Coqui...simple, clean, homey, and serving up great food at reasonable prices! Service was energetic, attentive, and friendly. Nothing fancy, but awesome $20 eats! $18 Chicharron De Pollo...fried chicken! 3 meaty legs of fried chicken, lightly battered and seasoned and tender. I would've like some thighs instead, but still good! The yellow rice is seasoned so nicely and delicious, and loved the stewed red beans. The fried green plantains also made for an excellent crunchy sides, that took me right back Costa Rica(I know this is a Puerto Rican restaurant :) ). $21 Polla Al Horno...their most popular dish of chicken thigh meat in delightful seasonings, cooked and blended with peppers and herbs, all so flavorful, tender, and delicious!

Yelp
This was such a treat! It totally brought me back to memory lane, I visited Honduras about 30 yrs ago and my favorite food was fried whole plantains with ground beef, even though the Catracho version is different it still had some familiar flavors that brought me much joy. The server was friendly and very helpful, I'm terrible with names so I apologize for not including it in here, but she was wonderful and patient, also gave me great recomendations for my next visit, yes I will definitely be coming back to try out the pollo al horno and other dishes. 10/10 in flavor, presentation and cleanliness. Don't sleep on this spot if you are in town; It won't disappoint.

Yelp
This review is based on my takeout experience. Dining in may be completely different. My partner and I ordered the Bacalaito and Pollo al Horno plate. Both plates come with yellow rice and black beans, along with sweet or fried plantain and avocado salad. The Pollo al Horno plate as a whole was very tasty and flavorful. The chicken itself was tender, but a tad on the dry side if you eat it alone. However, if you get a bite of the yellow rice or black beans with the chicken, it's perfect! The Bacalaito was nice and flaky. However, the breading was a little soggy, likely due to takeout. Otherwise, it was also nicely flavored. In terms of the sides, the black bean and the rice provided alot of the flavoring for the full dish. The plantain was nicely fried, but a tad too dry in my opinion and needed a salsa or sauce. Lastly, I was disappointed by the avocado salad as there were only 3 small avocado slice. Overall, this was a solid meal for takeout with plenty of food. I don't think I would do takeout again because some of the items didn't seem to carry out, but I would dine in if I were in the area again!

Yelp
One of my fave restaurants in Santa Rosa. Love their sweet plantains and all their dishes I've tried are really tasty. Portion size is also huge I have not been able to finish any dish in one sitting. Bf and I had their jibarito con picadillo and pollo al horno the first time. Came back with family and each person got the same entree combination of rice, beans, sweet plantains, just with different protein. Our fave was the pollo al horno, which is no surprise because that's also their signature dish. We've tried their mofongo and trifongo - both are good. I am usually not a bean person because it upsets my stomach but I decided to try the beans here my first time and it was pretty good so I just risked it and ate more lol. It surprisingly sat fine with my stomach after. Also, we usually don't order drinks when we're out but we tried the pineapple coconut sangria and it was pretty good. The only thing we thought was ok was their pique sauce because it was more of a vinegary than a hot sauce. Maybe it was just the days we went. Service is quick and friendly. Casual and fun - great for dates, groups, family dinners. They don't take reservations so can be tricky for a large group 5+ but if you call an hour in advance they can see if they can make it work for you. We were a party of 5 and luckily there was a table big enough for us when we came. Huge fan! Will def be back!

Yelp
Does Puerto Rican food get any better than this??? I don't think so. Jackie & Tina have done an incredible job of keeping their food consistently awesome year after year. Best Sangria in town I might add. Everything is delicious- my favorite is their Canoa Vegeteranio- so full of flavor. Save room for dessert if you can- the flan is scrumptious!

Yelp
I came here for dinner when I was in town for a business trip. The hostess was extremely nice and offered me a seat at the bar right away. I ordered the Mofongo and the Pollo al Horno. The mofongo was a bit dry but had a great flavor. I absolutely love the chicken, it was so moist and flavorful. I want to come back to try more things off of the menu.

Yelp
El Coquí is amazing! The Pollo al Horno was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Friendly staff and great vibes, can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Fire food out there in Santa Rosa... I destroyed this meal. Service and ambiance is great. Good price. Santa Rosa's hidden gem for PR/ Caribbean foods

Yelp
My family and I stopped in on the way home from a doctors appointment. I've always wanted to go here because it's a little piece of my heritage. There wasn't very long of a wait time to get seated. The ambiance gives off a feel and our server was very attentive. Then there was the food....it was worth the stop! It reminded me of all the home cooked food from my childhood. If you are looking for something different and full of flavor this is a must stop.

Yelp
food & drinks were great! I got the pina sangria & the red wine sangria. I personally loved the pina 10/10

Yelp
What a great find. We we're visiting on Sunday and needed food. I appreciated all the reviews to help me feel comfortable to try this place. Now I can't wait to return. The chicken dish I had, more of a stewed meat was amazing. Plates are large. I highly recommend there food. As I've eaten at many locations and this one is great.

Yelp
In one word -YUM ! Expectations were high based on the reviews and this place did not disappoint. Most dishes have a choice of red or black beans and sweet or savory plantains. It was lunch times so the portions are slightly smaller. We ordered the two entrees - the Bacalaito; cod fritter comprised of 2 large fritters, yellow rice, black beans and sweet plantains and Pollo al Horno; marinated baked chicken, yellow rice, red beans and sweet plantains. There is a large assortment of alcohol/non-alcohol drink options. We chose the mango tea and mango limeade; both were also good. My partner thought she had more room the tank so she ordered a pork mofongo but she wasn't to fond of it. Overall we really enjoyed this restaurant and will be back for more !

Jack L.

Yelp
Not at all impressive. Very greasy and cheap ingredients, they don't care for quality I'll continue eating at Sol Food in Petaluma! Where it's clean, inviting and the food is so much cleaner and tastier !

Yelp
OMG... a hidden gem in Santa Rosa! My friend , my husband and I wanted Carribean food while visiting Graton Casino. All three of us vacationed in Miami, FL and fell in love with their food. I was excited to see El Coqui Puerto Rican Cuisine. It's a small restaurant with nice decorations and upbeat music. Service was great. .The food looked amazing on YELP... thanks reviewers!!! We dined during lunch time. It wasn't too busy. We told our server, Miriam, we were first time customers and wanted to know her recommendations. We started with the tostanas with steak appetizer. It was full of flavor and a great start to our meal. She gave us spicy sauce and we tried their apple cider vinegar set on the table. BOTH Condiments were excellent complements to the food. We shared the fried chicken, chicken stew (hornas) and steak sandwich. AMAZING!!! The perfect meal ended with their coconut flan. Hands the best food we've had in a long time. We will return during our visits to the casino. Thank you to the owners and chefs for bringing their food to California!

Yelp
I've been going/ordering from here for a long time. But now they are charging $25 for the pollo al horno! On a recent takeout order we got half the black beans we would usually get, one sad thin slice of tomato and tiny sliver of avocado, tons of rice and half the usual amount of chicken. I think they have gotten greedy.
google avatar

Kate R.

Yelp
We've since eaten at El Coqui numerous times and love the food! Haven't gotten sick again so could've been anything really. Such a nice touch to have a little Puerto Rican restaurant in SC. They won't disappoint!

Yelp
What a wonderful meal! First time here for both of us and my first time eating Puerto Rican food. I had read that the Pollo al Horno was a Harvest Fair award winner so when our kind server, Miriam, greeted us, we asked what she would recommend. She said if you've never been here before, try the Pollo al Horno! So of course, we had to try it. Our lunches came literally within a few minutes and they were served on bright green plates which accented all the beautiful colors in our meal. The Pollo al Horno is their signature dish. It is baked chicken thighs marinated with bell peppers, cilantro and spices. It has an absolutely amazing taste and it is so tender it will melt in your mouth. Our dishes came with a choice of black or red beans, sweet plantains, rice and an avocado salad. I chose the black beans and they were full-bodied and savory. A lovely accompaniment to the chicken. We really enjoyed our lunches and can't wait to return with our spouses! Metered street parking in this area.

Yelp
We went for lunch and definitely had a delicious lunch! The sauces are amazing, the meats always scrumptious and the rice and beans so yummy. The waitress was kind and prompt. The restaurant is very welcoming and there is a bar that is the length of the restaurant- drinks of your choice!! A must on my visits to Santa Rosa.

Yelp
We were lucky to stumble into this restaurant on our first visit to Santa Rosa. It was delicious! We both ordered Canoa Plate, one with meat and one vegetarian. Both were very flavorful and generous servings. We also ordered a mango piña colada, also delicious. Prices were reasonable. Service was good and fast. I also appreciated the Spanish music. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: A good option for some island food in Santa Rosa. Would I come back: If I was in Santa Rosa and was craving some island food yes indeed. The extended review... Food: Canoa con carne molida - 3.5/5 - Never seen this dish at any other island restaurant. I'm a fan of all the components so gave it a go. I would have liked a little more meat but overall not bad. Flan - 4/5 - A very creamy and silky flan. Best of all it didn't have the skin that results from overcooking. Service: 4/5 - Friendly and attentive service. Ambiance: 4/5 - A very festively decorated interior.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while so decided to try out their Thursday dinner special. At $15, their fried steak special was a real treat and bargain! Delicious and filling...enough for another meal.

Mark L.

Yelp
Very tasty and rich, authentic flavors. Delivery was rapid and the order was exact. They clearly take pride in their food and make sure that it looks appealing, even if it's for takeout.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't have photos of the food since I got takeout, but I really loved the way they made their sweet fried banana. Overall, the food was delicious, and the staffs were friendly. I'd definitely recommend it. I also like that they offer this seating (as shown in the picture), which adds to the experience.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Food is OK, although fairly greasy/heavy. As a note there is no longer any outdoor seating available, heated or unheated. The Yelp page should be updated to reflect this.

Yelp
Food was good but I would have liked to hear Salsa in a Puerto Rican restaurant, Not Mexican music.

Yelp
I stopped in the the other night with a friend for a casual bite to eat. I loved the latin vibe as soon as I stepped inside. There was great music on and the place seemed happy. I had a delicious margarita on the rocks because that's how I like it and it is the only way that they make it. My yucca frita was crispy and the ajo sauce was rich. Will definitely come back for more when in town.

Yelp
Great. Passing through from Napa to The City down 101, pulled off, found this place. Wonderful food. Friendly and helpful staff. Authentic music with cuisine that has cultural fidelity. Thank you for having us.

Yelp
My boyfriend grabbed takeout for us for lunch from here on a weekday and I was quite happy with the meal! The portions for the plates are pretty big and very filling. I got the pollo al horno and my boyfriend got the bacalaito. Both were super flavorful and I loved the variety in the plates! The fish had a nice crispy texture on the outside, while the chicken was fall-apart tender. The combo of sweet and savory was very satisfying and I would definitely order from here again.

Yelp
This restaurant is one of the BEST in santa rosa!! Incredibly flavorful, packed plates leaving you stuffed and more than satisfied!!! I truly love this spot. Service? 10 Food? 11 Atomosphere? 10

Yelp
Catered from here for my Aunts 60th Birthday party and it was amazing!!!! As always, El Coqui never disappoints. This East Bay girl will travel to get the goods! HIGHLY recommend for your next event.

Yelp
Food was amazing! I ordered the palomilla encebollado as my entree (thinly sliced top sirloin steak with onions) and the flavor was amazing, I really enjoyed it. The vibes here are also great! Love the music and ambiance.

Yelp
This was such a refreshing stop for me. I was stood up for a date and eating alone (not relevant but I'm going to vent it anyway). I was coming in with no expectations on a total whim, and I am so glad I did. I ordered a Pina Colada and their signature chicken dish. This place felt like a nice escape, like I scraped my knee in grandmas front yard and she calls out to me saying, "It's okay mijo, I made dinner come inside." She then proceeds to push this plate of incredibly tender chicken on a bed of warm rice and beans with sweet and crunchy plantains on the side toward me - and suddenly life's problems seem so small in comparison. The staff were also warm and friendly, I felt like I was with family. Highly recommend.

Yelp
First impressions are great. Ambiance and musics awesome! Drinks and food are great. Try the cafe w coconut!

Yelp
El Coqui catered my party over the weekend. As usual, their food was fantastically delicious and packed with incredible flavor. It was a big hit with all the ladies! We're all planning a girls trip to El Coqui in the coming weeks, which by the way, is decorated rich in Jackie's family history in Puerto Rico. Tina and Jackie have done a phenomenal job with their staff, as they are all very professional and sweet. If you're looking to have a party catered or to dine in at the restaurant, El Coqui Puerto Rican Cuisine is the best choice. Thank you El Coqui for making my party memorable. You're very special ladies!

Yelp
Delicious and always good service with kind employees. Love the red beans, yellow rice, and sweet plantains! Also the guacamole appetizer.

Yelp
Feb 2023 Recommended by a few friends, we stopped in for lunch since we were heading to downtown for the day. Service was helpful with any questions, water refills and check ins were infrequent. The bar looked laid back but we didn't have time to stop in for a spell. We had gotten a trifongo to share, I had gotten the Canoa Vegetariana. Flavors were simple but worked well. The Canoa had good flavor with a light sweetness from the plantains. I think the main thing for me that would've helped was a bit of salt, and I wanted something crunchy to go along with it just for a change through the meal. Fav for a friend of ours, so we'll be back again to try things out ourselves and maybe a night out we'll check out the bar.
google avatar

Omayra O.

Yelp
I brought my family here after wine tasting, and this place was a hit! We are a Panamenian/Jamaican/Cuban family originally from New York, so the flavors in the food were a welcome reminder of home. Everything we ordered was a hit. I really liked the vegetarian tostones as an appetizer, I'd never even seen that dish prepared that way before, but it was so yummy and creative. We've all had tostones, but with the toppings, they were taken to a new level. I always get the canoa vegetariana. I love it. I couldn't tell you what everyone else got, but they are mostly meat eaters, and everyone left with a full belly and a smile on their faces. I was feeling really proud that I chose a restaurant that everyone liked. My family can be very picky, so this was a big win.

Yelp
Omg!! Best food ever! Not surprised they have such a good review Service was quick and very friendly and again.... The food wonderfully tasteful!!!

Yelp
I stopped here for lunch on a weekday because I wanted to try Puerto Rican food. The service was normal and they weren't very busy. I ordered the pollo al horno which was overall pretty good. I liked the plantains but the rest of the dish wasn't anything very special. It was still nutritious food with protein and fiber. I also drank a hard Irish Rican cafe con leche but I didn't expect it to be hot for some reason. I probably won't stop by again but still good to try!

Yelp
the BEST PUERTO RICAN FOOD IN CALIFORNIA!!!! THE Pique de Piña is out of this world! It took me home! If you haven't tried it you are missing out! I will be a lifetime fan! Margarita
