I read the reviews and decided to try "Taco Tuesday" at El Farolito. I really like Mexican food and went with great hopes for a new place to get my "fix".
The place looks like a classic Mexican food restaurant with walls covered in murals, a tv on the wall, and musica playing in the background.
I was promptly seated, asked if I'd like chips and mild salsa? I asked for the spicy.
I went with the hard shell chicken tacos and the bean and cheese nachos. After all, it was taco Tuesday.
My order came out quickly. I must admit, I'm used to a pile of chips, layered with beans, cheese, jalapeños, maybe some black olives, sour cream......
This was a different experience.
About 9 tortilla chips circled the plate. Each chip had a dollop of refried beans, and melted cheddar cheese. The 9 chips circled around a small portion of shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes.
The beans were the same consistency and flavor of canned refried beans.
The chicken tacos were hard shell with a very bland shredded chicken, chopped lettuce and diced tomatoes. All in all, the most American, homogenized Tex/Mex food I have ever tasted.
The place was clean, the service was good. The food was non-commital. If you think of Taco Bell as a daring, spicy adventure for your taste buds and want to dial it back a bit, this is the place you'll want to go.
