House-made tortillas, a lively salsa bar, and tender barbacoa define this counter-service taquería. Kansas City Magazine singled out its tacos among the city’s essentials.

Had lunch at El Fogon and enjoyed an asada torta and al pastor street tacos—both flavorful and fresh. The horchata was decent but tasted like a powder mix. Overall, solid spot for tacos and a quick lunch, would come back for the food!

Google
So good! I had the carnitas tacos and they were so good! I love adding extra lime to mine and they gave me plenty. The small market next door is also really nice

Google
This is a great little place - authentic, not Tex-mex. Just had the chili rilleno burrito and loved it. The flavors are on point and the meat is tender; tortillas are the right texture and taste. It’s not fancy, but it’s not dirty or dingy either.

Google
Food is amazing! Reasonably priced, friendly smiling staff who helped me with pronouncing food items. Clean and festive environment. Took me back to my trips to Mexico! Headed to the attached Mexican market next door! Will definitely be back

Google
Had the chorizo burrito. I wouldn't say it was great, but it was good. We ordered online, and I included a side of guacamole in my order that I didn't receive - that's on me, I should have checked the bag before we left. The service was fast and friendly. There are a few tables, but I'd assume most of their business is take-out. All in all, I'm sure that I'll go back.

Google
Would recommend. Al Pastor? Yes. Not pork Barbacoa? Yes. Tortas? Yes. Multiple salsa and smothering options including green chile sauce? Yes. Small dive in the middle of commercial Overland Park serving some good non-commercial Mexican, next to it's own grocery store. It's good to see places do more than just beef or chicken tacos and burritos. And, of course, El Fogon would. They're anti-commercial Mexican enough that they do NOT have ground beef. Pluses on the food? Barbacoa is beef (nice). Had a great flavor too. Fresh. Maybe a bit light in the burrito, but good otherwise. The beans and rice were fantastic in the burrito too. Usually places dont care about these ingredients and they are low quality. Not here. It really added to the meal. Steak meat had a great seasoning and makes for great tortas or tacos. The dining area was a bit small and cramped. I banged into a chair at another table a couple of times. Might be nice to have the store and restaurant run together. They were walled off though. They need just a bit more space to be comfortable. Service was fine. On the plus side, food was out quick. They had self-service salsa. On the negative side, the Chips and Salsa order ($2.99) felt a bit light. It's a small carton to begin with, but it was maybe 2/3 full. All around good place to get a bite with decent ambience. 4.33 and we'll round up to 5.

Google
Some of the best tacos you can find in the area. A great place that gets you food fast and for a good price. Sitting in a little taco place next to a grocery store has a certain charm that not much can top. I highly recommend El Fogon.

Google
This place has amazing tacos and reminds me of the taco stands on the side of the road in Tijuana Mexico. They have a great selection of salsas to choose from. If you are in the area, definitely take the time to visit. We are out of state staying at the Embassy Suites and it was a short 8 minute walk from our hotel.

Yelp
Hole in the wall taqueria next to a grocery store - had lunch with colleagues today. I ordered three different tacos and horchata. The Al pastor taco was delicious, but the chorizo taco was dripping with grease, and the barbacoa taco was not as flavorful as I expected. The horchata was good. May come back for the Al pastor.

Yelp
If a restaurant hangs a sign on its sauce bar warning that a certain salsa is 'very hot' then you would think the restaurant is being helpful. I believed them, but I just had to try it for myself. Soon I had happy tears falling down my face and I was feverishly reaching for my soda. There are other salsas, but if you're a hot freak like me then you will love the hot ones. You'll love the different meats and the variety of ways you can eat them, too.

Yelp
Service was fast and explanatory with the menu. Food was excellent and I will definitely return. I like all the different kinds of sauces that you can pick as much as you want. The added bonus is it's next to a grocery store that's Hispanic.

Yelp
Food, authentic and delicious! Ambiance, brought me back to my childhood! Service, felt like family! This place is great! I usually judge Hispanic restaurants by the quality and taste of their tortas. I'm not sure who voted Taco Naco so highly with their weird tamale torta, but they obviously missed this restaurant. The torta was great, perfectly toasted bread, great amount of avocado, carne safe is actual carne asada (which is rare for the Midwest), all the right condiments, perfectly salted! I also had a carne asada taco which was only bested by their chicken tacos. I paired it with their spicy green salsa, instant and new favorite! I really liked their corn tortillas as well, it reminded me of how they make the tortillas in Central America. It was a nice treat to walk through the shop it's tied to next door, I saw all kinds of foods I hadn't seen since I was last in Honduras. I love seeing a bigger variety of hot sauces too! I am definitely bringing people here to experience what good Hispanic food truly tastes like!!

Yelp
Such a gem in OP. Great prices, prompt service, delicious food. Tacos and burritos are always solid. Great lunch spot with plenty of tables.

Yelp
Pitch Sandwich Week 2024 What a surprise sensational sandwich with the right amount of southwestern flair, okay, so technically, it's probably considered tex-mex, but, regardless, this torta was top tier. I don't have too much experience in eating tortas, but from what I can tell, it's specifically a Mexican origin sandwich that's served on a crust white bread roll and stuffed with meat and fillings. Since it was Pitch Sandwich Week, this bad boy was on discount and definitely was worth the $6 price tag. My mom and I ended up splitting it, and we left full (we did order a side of guacamole and chips as well). It was limited to the chicken version for the special price, but we didn't mind at all! The chicken was tender, moist, and seasoned to perfection - no traditional taco seasoning in sight! The insides included premium helpings of fresh vibrant avocados, shredded lettuce, ripe supple tomatoes, and some salty white cheese. The addition of the many tangy and spicy salsas, from the salsa bar, to choose from made this sandwich super flavorful. I would sing the praise for the medium salsa that's a little bit chunky; I enjoy that because I can see all the fresh vegetables and automatics that make up the signature blend. The hot salsa is no joke! However, if you want a little kick, do what I do and mix the mild and the hot together, and it's a great combo. Also, the salsa verde is acidic and provides a good cut to all the heavy ingredients presented on the torta, so don't skip on that!

Yelp
This place is the real deal. I was looking for something simple and quick within walking distance of the hotel, and I chose well. Had three tacos. Carne asada, chorizo, and Al Pastor. All were excellent, but the Al Pastor was my favorite. Great authentic spicy salsas too. The owner was friendly too. I will make it back again this trip.

Yelp
Being in the middle of a low trafficked strip mall makes us forget about this gem. Yet, every time we eat here we have a 5-star meal! Taco Tuesday is a great deal with the four most common meats $2 per taco. Heck of a deal if you like chicken or pork! Personally, I think they have the best Chorizo in the entire city! Try it, you will not regret it I promise! The place is usually packed, but they always churn out the food at a very fast pace. The cashier and cooks are always very friendly too! The salsa bar still exists, but if you are getting your food To-Go, they have premade containers of all the salsas and pico now. The very hot Green Salsa is so good, but buyer beware, it is HOT!! The light Red Hot Salsa is great too. They have added a walk through market next store that opens the whole place up with a half wall in between locations. Don't forget to pick up some tortillas or chips on your way out. Thanks El Fogon!!

Yelp
On one hand, I want to write this review because this place has the BEST street tacos in OP/Leawood and they deserve a shout out. On the other hand, I don't want others to find out about this spot so it doesn't get more busy haha. One thing I LOVE about their food is that it is so fresh and NOT greasy like some other places. Their sauces are also amazing! My new favorite Mexican restaurant for sure

Sandy G.

Yelp
First of all the employee and owner were very nice. Unfortunately the rice had no flavor and the refried beans did not taste homemade as told. The carnitas burrito had more rice and beans than meat. It was overstuffed causing it to fall apart. They have a small but great salsa bar, however their salsa containers are kept behind the counter and are only given one. You have to ask for more if you want to sample to figure out what salsa you want. Napkins are super thin which it's a waste as one ends up using a lot.

Sheri J.

Yelp
Today was my first time eating here and I was NOT disappointed. Everything was delicious (I sampled some of everything on the table )!! The food is delicious, the employees/service was wonderful (so friendly and attentive), the atmosphere was fantastic. I give them a 10 out of 10!!

Randy R.

Yelp
Ariadna M. Excellent food and service ,felt like family. Being able to visit many restaurants, this is by far my favorite place to eat. Gmail mail me at cheifs58lb if you agree with me. This reminded me of when I traveled to Madrid Spain.

Yelp
Delicious tacos in Overland Park with quick service. The salsas here are awesome, my fav is the light green one!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Al pastor tacos were great and salsa options were plentiful. Battery died on my car and the man working there was more than helpful trying to get me back on the road. Big thanks to them. Support good people and good places.
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
Our first time here (visiting from Texas)... we got an assortment of delicious tacos to go - everything packed up well including several types of salsa. I especially loved the very fresh guacamole!

Yelp
First time trying El Fogon and after having my Carnitas Burrito I don't know what took me so long to try this place out Food was great, friendly service and a really clean restaurant I will be back
google avatar

Lily L.

Yelp
I would pass by El Fogon all the time and always thought about trying but never really got around to it until one day my roommates decided they wanted taco Tuesday here. We all were very impressed with the quality of the tacos. Generous amounts meat on each taco, prepared street taco style. So many different sauces as well, 7 to be exact. My favorite sauce is the light green, creamy looking one. It doesn't look spicy, but packs a punch. Their chips and guac are also a good addition for the meal. We are definitely thinking about going every Tuesday now. I should have taken more photos especially on the day that we tried three different kinds of street tacos: barbacoa, chorizo and grilled chicken. Their location is dangerously close to us and I do look forward to future visits. Keep up the good work, guys!!
google avatar

Cynthia M.

Yelp
Cute Mexican cafe/deli with a a menu offering a little of everything! The staff was very friendly and welcoming, tables were kept clean and picked up. The street tacos were very fresh, tasty and hit the spot. Will definitely be back to try more of the menu.
google avatar

Becca A.

Yelp
Authentic, fresh, delicious street tacos! The staff are kind, and the service is quick. The place is clean and spacious. You order food and seat yourselves, no staff waiting on you. I love good street tacos!

Donna E.

Yelp
Delish. Friendly service. Ambience not the main attraction On taco Tuesdays it's crazy busy
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
This place is close to my work. when I go for lunch I have to be there before noon otherwise there is quite a long line. I have not had a bad meal here. When it is slow the folks at the counter will explain the entrees to you in detail. The service is typically fast and friendly. There is also a good sized fresh condiment bar to load up your tacos and burrito bowls. of course, being a Mexican restaurant they do offer Coke in a glass bottle. I would come back here on a regular basis.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
First place I've been in OP that actually has hot sauce! Small cafe next to a market, authentic Mexican food! Real Coke in the glass bottle a big plus too! PS-they also serve a variety of bottled beer.

L B.

Yelp
100% recommend. We used El Fogon for our grad party and they were amazing to work with. Easy to schedule, prompt, courteous - and best part - the tacos were delicious. We got so many compliments on the food! Would not hesitate to use again.
google avatar

Candice S.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing! I just moved to Kansas from Utah so I haven't had good street tacos in such a long time. I was pleasantly surprised to find good ones so quickly. I got the chicken and the carnitas, my boyfriend got carne asada, carnitas, and birria. Usually a place is only good at either chicken or carnitas, but this place did both very well. The hot salsa on the far right is exactly what it says, very hot! I put it on only half of my tacos luckily. It is good, but be warned. I can't wait to come back and try their other items. Also a fan of the store next door!
google avatar

Long V.

Yelp
If you eat here on Tuesday, the tacos are 33% off! The portions are generous and I love their Al Pastor tacos. Full of flavors and it's great for anyone needing that extra ummff in the bathroom the next day for their #2.

Yelp
My go-to for taco tuesday for a few years now. Tacos for $1.49 now. With COVID, there is no open station for salsas and other toppings. Ordered take-out last friday for 16 chicken and steak tacos. I love how smokey their meat is and I love all the toppings they usually have, however they now limit how many salsas you can have sadly (wasn't an issue before COVID with the toppings station). Their tacos come with cilantro, onion, and lime. I was extremely disappointed this time when I got home with my order. They forgot to give me salsa and pico de gallo when I specifically asked for it. They gave me two cups of limes (more than enough) and one cup of cilantro and onion mixed together, which was probably enough for maybe half the tacos I ordered. We called to ask if they could do anything about leaving the Salsas out of my order and all they could offer was to have me come back and pick it up. We were hoping they would atleast offer us free salsa on our next order but sadly nothing. All to say I was quite disappointed with how it was handled and how we were stuck eating a bunch of tacos without any salsa. Please check your pickup orders before leaving the restaurant!

Tyler H.

Yelp
Quality of the food is good but they're stingy with meat in the burritos. I paid $11 and got 95% rice. Won't be back.
google avatar

Alberto Q.

Yelp
The food was very good even though we arrived 30 minutes until they closed. Service was nice, the young lady attended us very quickly and nicely. The dine in lobby gives you a nice hint of authentic mexican culture with no overly loud nonsensical music and calm atmosphere.

Nekye S.

Yelp
Amazing service and food! Ambiance gives a homey feel Definitely one of my favorite restaurants thus far

Yelp
I am always searching for great street tacos. This was my first time at el Fogon. It was 8:00 pm so the place was almost empty. The cashier recommended the tacos barbacoa, which I ordered along with tacos al pastor. Keeping the trend alive in Kansas City, the tacos al pastor were a bit of a letdown. The tacos barbacoa were great. The topping bar had the normal salsas, onions, cilantro and lime. I will be back for taco Tuesday to fill up on $1.39 tacos barbacoa. The place was clean and the workers were friendly. This is not a place that interprets tacos and makes a fancy fusion taco for $3 each. Good, simple food at a reasonable price. Had to pop back in and update my review to 5 stars. The barbacoa tacos were so good I craved them all week. Just got my taco fix again. Love this place!

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Had the Al Pastor Tacos, Carne Asada Tacos and the Chicken Tacos and they were all fantastic. Even ordered some tamales to go! Will be back!

Bailey W.

Yelp
Delicious little local restaurant. Good atmosphere and service! Has a fun salsa bar to try. There is a store next door, unsure if it's run by the same people but very fun and nice. This was honestly as much as fast food and much better quality!
google avatar

Zahra R.

Yelp
Picked up some Carne Asada and Chicken tacos from here for dinner. All the ingredients were super fresh and the service was amazing. The prices for the tacos is also a nice perk! Check out El Fogon for some authentic, fresh Mexican food.
google avatar

Terry M.

Yelp
Solid place - had lunch today did a pork sausage, Pollo and steak taco. The steak taco was stellar as was the pork sausage. Staff was very friendly and the place was spotless. If you are running down I-435 and its near lunch time - it's a half a mile north on metcalf. Great experience!
google avatar

Yelp
Continuing our KC Magazine list of taco joints in KC. This location was written to have amazing barbacoa tacos. So we ordered the barbacoa tacos and a burrito, we also tried a chorizo, carnita, and Al Pastor tacos, along with chips and salsa, rice and beans. Our favorite was the barbacoa hands down. We asked for hot salsa and let me tell you their hot salsa is no joke! Our lips are still tingling!! We will be back for more barbacoa.

Edgar V.

Yelp
Great food. Quick service. Sensational. The torta is amazing and the taco was also good. The tortillas could be a little better. Overall good
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Wanted to try some Mexican food while staying in KC for the week. Luckily, I found this place on Yelp. It's located in a strip mall not too far from my hotel. Inside, it is a no frills, order at the counter place. I got the chicken and steak Ranchero fajitas. It came out maybe 10 minutes later. But before I started eating, I stopped by their condiments stations and got plenty of diced white onions, cilantro, and their spicy salsa. The food was delicious. It came which rice and beans but I did not expect the beans to be in this soup. That was interesting but it was still quite good. The chicken and steak were cooked well and tasted great! Also, it was so much food that I had to get a to-go box and I ate the leftovers for breakfast the next day. Staff are friendly, food is delicious with big portions and price is reasonable for dinner. Would definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Collin K.

Yelp
Already looking forward to next Taco Tuesday. I love lil street tacos, and at $1.50 a piece on Tuesday, you can't beat it. My only complaint is that I should have ordered more.

Tim D.

Yelp
I had lunch there today. Food was excellent and well priced. A definite go to.! Fabulous food and I am only guessing ( the owner) was very accommodating. Great place! Find it. It's worth the time!!

Jarrod G.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place for lunch. Staff are friendly and the food is on point. Always fresh and seems really authentic. The fact that they now have a small store connected to it makes it even better. The tamales are some of the best I've ever had. Definitely more than enough for the price, always leave full and happy.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
The tocos here are the best and a great value We like to just have one of each kind. Great for a quick meal at a great price
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
Good tacos in the Overland Park area, little pricey though. Wonderful customer service, but the chairs and table were a little uncomfortable. Overall, Good place to eat!

The Yelp-inator W.

Yelp
Good quality counter service Mexican food. I like to get lunch here on a regular basis. This seems to be a mom and pop restaurant and they seem to focus on making some great food, made fresh to order, in a fairly quick and friendly manner. They also have a decent salsa bar.
google avatar

Sydney E.

Yelp
My favorite taco spot, especially for taco Tuesday!! The tomatillo salsa is my favorite. They recently opened a Mexican market next door that is also worth a visit to get some galletas for after your tacos!
google avatar

Joe W.

Yelp
We try street tacos all over Kansas City. There are so many great places but El Fogón is one of the very best. The Barbacoa is really fantastic. Beware the light green sauce! Crazy hot but gets the endorphins flowing.
google avatar

Royjamian E.

Yelp
Overall really good tacos . They came out fast they were extremely fresh with a lot more meat on them than most taco places. Nice selection of beers , really clean and friendly place

A P.

Yelp
H No.. not worth the money. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into my food I even waited until I got to my hotel to eat. First thing I tried was the rice and the rice was not authentic it tasted like mushy plain rice with no flavor and omg I love Rice so it was disappointing, next I tried the beans but these had no FLAVOR I mean where is the salt at it obviously wasn't in the beans I can tell you that much. Lastly the carnitas were a far cry from being a carnita... it literally was just pulled pork with grease onions and cilantro in a taco shell smfh no seasoning again and the meat wasn't how typical carnitas are cooked. This was an utter waste of money and I'm disappointed. Won't recommend
google avatar

Elaine R.

Yelp
If you want delicious authentic Mexican food, especially tacos, this place is fabulous. Their carne asada tacos are delicious and their salsa bar is great. The food prepared here is fresh, and tasty. The restaurant manager/owner who served me was very friendly and efficient. The restaurant is located in a strip mall storefront and is very clean. My wait time was minimal considering they were fairly busy over the lunch hour. I'll note it's a Monday, so I'm not sure how busy they are the rest of the week, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are... their food is delicious. I'll be back!
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
This is nice little taco shop attached to a market. The service was great, everything we ate was delicious, and the salsa bar puts the whole thing over the top! It's a must try!
