Let me start off with ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! So good that we went back two days in a row. :-)
This was our first trip to Mexico and were staying at the Fairmont, Mayakoba. As expected, there are a variety of wonderful restaurants within the Mayakoba properties, which consist of the Fairmont, The Rosewood and Andaz. We tried a few of the property restaurants our first few days, but wanted to find something more local to the area, a meal representing the local products and flavors as well as a more casual and less expensive experience. This lead me to YELP and discovering El Fogon in Playa del Carmen.
The taxi ride form The Fairmont to El Fogon in Playa del Carmen was ~450 / 500 Peso's, or about $25 USD. It was a straight shot from the hotel to the restaurant and took about 20-25 minutes. The restaurant is located on the corner of Av. Consitituyentes and 30 Avenida Nte. You can't miss the colorful two story building; orange, yellow and green. I enjoyed that both the main and second floor were open air seating. They are open from 1 pm to midnight each day and serve lunch, dinner, drinks and desserts.
Expect it to be busy (in most cases) when you arrive. The first time we came to the restaurant it was about 7 pm and we had about a 15 minute wait; not too bad at all. It was actually shorter of a wait than I anticipated based on the long line when we arrived. There are plenty of seats throughout the restaurant.
The food - what to expect. Traditional tacos and quesadillas, family-style grilled meat combination plates, fajitas, a variety of quesos fundidos, tortas, nachos, alcoholic and fruit frescas. It's a large menu with a variety of choices. However, the meats grilled on the vertical rotisserie spit are absolutely fantastic.
When you are seated, they quickly bring out a trio of salsas, a fresh marinated cactus plate and a plate of We had the the Taco Logo with bacon both days we came to the restaurant. Yes, it was that good. It is a combination of the meats roasted on the spits, with a quest and topped with a hearty piece of bacon. The flavors were deep, rich and came together in true perfection. The steak tacos came out and had a pile of corn tortillas, queso and a large portion of steak to build out several tacos to share.
There were two disappointments during our visits.
1) We didn't find this restaurant sooner during our visit. I think if we had, we may have eaten here 75%+ or more during our 5 day stay in the Cancun area.
2) We came back late in the evening to try the Flan based on recommendations, but were too full to eat after dinner. They were out and we never got to try it!
The hotel staff were even impressed that we had visited this local favorite and continued to make recommendations on dishes we should try. However, ever time we said we ordered the Taco loco a confirming smile of "that's the one to get" came across.
Would I go back - absolutely!!!
